[ thunder rumbles, rainfall ]
Christina: Oh, god.
narrator: One man and one woman...
[ screams ]
...Alone for 21 days...
Aah!
I cut myself up pretty good here.
Narrator: ...To face the most primal survival challenge
of their lives.
Man: Mmm -- rat kabobs.
They have no clothes, no food, no water...
Only their skills...
Oh, god, that [bleep] hurts.
...And their will to survive...
Whoo-hoo!
...Naked and afraid.
Christina: [ whimpering ] I'm just so hungry and tired.
I don't know if you can see that in the background,
but I'm preparing watching a little "naked and afraid"
just to get in the mood.
Okay, so we're at the airport
saying my goodbyes to my daughter.
Mm! Have fun.
I will!
Mwah!
Oh, hi. I'm getting my shots now, so...
It's going in there.
I thought it would be a little bit more -- I don't know --
emotional leaving my family for, you know, a month, 30 days,
but I'm very, very excited.
Yeah!
So this is the third...
Nurse: And final. ...And final --
[ gasps ] don't cry!
I'm definitely going to make the mexican jungle my bitch...
And I'm gonna spank that ass all the way for 21 days.
My name is christina, I am from louisville, kentucky,
and I pride myself on being a pretty tough customer.
Growing up poor,
if I wanted to eat, I would have to hunt it myself.
Deer, rabbits, squirrel, frog legs, snake --
you name it, I can hunt it.
And now I'm here to show my daughter that being a woman
doesn't mean you can't be a badass.
I got this, no problem whatsoever.
Steve: At this point,
I don't know whether to be nervous, whether to be excited.
My name is steve, I'm from los angeles, california,
and I'm a life coach.
I love helping people live more fulfilled and confident lives,
and I just have a very spiritual connection to nature,
especially snakes.
I've had them as pets my whole life.
I think right now I'm most nervous about the bugs,
because they have been nasty since I've been out here.
Christina: I have an abundance of confidence
and I'm completely comfortable
sleeping next to someone that I don't know.
I've done it before.
All right, let's do this.
Steve: Really hope
that my partner is easygoing and likes to joke around,
because as much pain as we're gonna go through,
I'm going to need all of their positive energy
to get through this.
Now it's a party.
Christina: Hey! Hello!
How's it going? Good.
I'm christina. Christina.
Steve. Nice to meet you. Steve, nice to meet you.
You excited? I am more than excited.
I've been excited to meet you. I know, me too.
So where you from? Louisville, kentucky.
Wow. Lots of woods and forests there?
Oh, absolutely, yeah.
I'm from massachusetts. I live in l.A. Now.
Okay, nice.
L.A.'s awesome. Love it.
It's different and we are not in l.A. Anymore.
Narrator: This rarely traveled area o
contains some of mexico's most dense and mountainous jungles
infested with disease-carrying mosquitos
and armies of fearless fire ants.
Three miles to the northeast
lies several large lakes, or cenotes,
which could provide a safe camp and steady water source,
but they are also home to 200-pound caiman,
giant red-tailed boas,
and highly aggressive howler monkeys,
unaccustomed to the presence of humans.
That would be the mountains.
And then we're headed over to this water.
Excellent.
Lots of water -- which means what?
Fishing, swimming... Exactly.
...Bathing, drinking.
I like it all. Yes.
All right. Let's do it. Let's go.
[ sighs ] how hot does it get in kentucky during the summer?
108, 110 degrees. Really?
Mm-hmm. Damn.
So I'm used to the elements. I'm a pretty good hunter.
We're definitely gonna be eating, for sure.
I believe it.
I pretty much feel like I have something constantly,
like, crawling on my butt right now.
If you want hang a minute, I can check for you.
[ chuckles ] no, it's --
nothing's inappropriate around me, just to let you know.
That's fair -- calls 'em like she sees 'em.
I was really excited to meet christina.
She's got a great sense of humor and she seems tough.
So two thumbs up for christina.
[ sighs ]
it's getting a little steeper, so be careful.
Oh, my goodness, this is straight up.
Yeah. Be careful. There's a ton of thorns.
Christina: Steve seems very nice and very calm.
And I am very vocal. I have zero filter.
Man, another thorn just went in my foot.
[bleep]
so I think we're going to get along really well.
Oh [bleep]
fire ants everywhere!
You good?
Yeah, little [bleep]
this is an angry, angry forest.
Narrator: Although this is christina's
first survival experience in a jungle setting,
her strength and mastery of a wide range
of hunting and trapping techniques has earned her
a starting primitive survival rating, or psr, of 6.4.
Steve's years of backcountry survival experience
and excellent interpersonal skills as a life coach
set his psr at 7.2.
Wow. This is amazing.
Yeah, that looks pretty sweet.
[ grunts ]
this is gorgeous. That looks beautiful.
[ sighs ] see, that's our home down there for 21 days.
Steve: It just looks like a little tropical paradise,
so hopefully it proves to be exactly that.
Those trees are nasty, and there's tons of 'em.
The water's clear as day.
This is great.
Do we want to make our camp away from the water,
because we'll be a little bit further away
from potential mosquitos and any animal
that decides it wants to come and drink tonight?
Absolutely.
[ monkeys growl ]
christina: We have monkeys.
Hello, monkey! Bring me a banana!
[ monkeys screech ]
I smell something burning.
Christina: After a long hike into the jungle, we're exhausted
and now I'm really thirsty and we have no water.
Everything is so wet right now.
Want to give it a shot for a second?
Narrator: The fire starter is embedded with magnesium
that produces a spark when scraped with metal,
but the number of strikes is limited.
Steve: It's just so humid out here,
and these fire starters can wear down really fast.
If that goes, we are...Not in good shape.
Oh, great. What?
There's like 100 bats flying around.
Oh, yeah. They're definitely bats.
Good news -- they eat bugs.
They're looking pretty aggressive.
I just don't want to get bit by one.
I do not want to get rabies.
Steve: I think we've got a ton of monkeys
swinging around our whole entire camp right now.
[ sighs ]
we got zero sleep.
So we're both so drained and extremely dehydrated.
[ sighs ]
my finger's locking up.
There's no water in my muscles
and it's literally just freezing up when I hold something tight.
Christina: We got to get this [bleep] going.
It's like a have-to situation.
[ sighs ]
christina: Every time we strike this thing could be the last.
So keeping my fingers crossed.
You got this, bro. Oh, baby, come on.
Come on.
Lookit.
No, keep it over, keep it over, keep it over.
We have fire in the jungle!
[ laughs ]
so today, we attempted to make fire again,
and we got it started.
So we have a fire!
Now we can drink lots of water.
We have fire!
This bought us life.
Now the goal is not losing it.
Dude, my belly's growling so loud.
Steve: My belly hasn't growled at all.
Mine says, "water before food."
christina: I'm going to make a deadfall trap.
This actually works really great...
No, I'm sure it does.
...With, like, squirrel and rabbits.
Animal comes in, eats, hits it, falls down, boom.
Animal's dead, I come, find breakfast!
Now, this is very tedious.
You have to get just right so it doesn't fall.
I'm pretty confident I can catch something in this jungle,
because I am, like, really hungry,
and I know my hunting skills.
And I know if I come across something,
I will kill it -- straight up will kill it.
I don't care what it takes, I'm gonna kill it.
Good to go?
I hope so.
Me too. I'm gonna catch some fish.
Sweet.
[ sighs ] look at that.
I can't see its tail, but it looks like a red-tailed boa.
I love animals -- I love animals -- but I am hungry,
and I'm gonna be way more hungry in a few days
if we don't get something, so...
So excited.
Part of me hopes I don't catch it.
The other part of me knows I will.
[ sighs ]
[ snake hisses ]
oh, that's good.
[ snake hisses ] come on, buddy. Come on.
[bleep]
heads up.
[ snake hisses ]
[bleep]
heads up, heads up, heads up.
Hey, christina...
Christina: Yo!
...Can you come here?
[ sighs ] I got food.
[ sighs ] it's just a little baby.
That is awesome.
Yeah. I just don't even want to kill him.
[ chuckles ] I want to eat him.
Christina: I don't know why steve doesn't want to kill that s
he's way more sensitive than I am.
Bring his meaty ass up here.
We're both in survival mode, and any food that we can get,
it really needs to go in our tummies.
He's so pretty.
I'm gonna go get the fire going, okay?
Eh...
Little baby...I'm sorry.
[ breathing deeply ]
I do not like doing that. That is not okay with me.
But...I've got some food,
and I've got his blood dripping on me.
I guess I deserve that.
I really just love snakes,
and it hurts to have had to kill that, but I can't pass up food.
I chose to do this, I'm here, and I'm surviving.
We've got to gut that bitch. Oh, look at that meat.
It's good. It's a lot of good meat.
And we should be able to just peel it back now.
It should peel back, yeah.
It should come off real clean, with the guts and everything.
Yeah.
Narrator: A mature boa can grow up to 10 feet
and weigh 50 pounds.
At just 3 pounds, this snake will provide the survivalists
about 180 calories each, or the equivalent of two eggs.
Ay-yay-yay- yay-yay-yay-yay!
[ monkey growls ]
it's still moving, steve. That's just, like, wicked.
Like a shish kebab.
Good to go.
Hmm. You're so sad. That's so cute.
I did not want to kill that snake,
but it's not an option when you're out here.
Having food whenever you can find it is key.
What are we gonna do for the rest of the day?
Finish our... ...Shelter.
We discussed a couple of different shelters,
and we thought a teepee would be great,
'cause it's actually pretty mobile.
So if we needed to move it, we could easily pick it up
and move it back to a different location.
Do we look, like, super rich right now?
[ thunder rumbles, rainfall ]
yeah, don't put quite as many. Here.
I just want to cover it.
We'll just keep one big one in the middle.
Christina: In the middle of building our shelter,
it just started downpouring.
So of course everything inside is wet.
So much for our bed being dry.
Steve: We just need to keep this fire.
We got a long night.
[ thunder crashes ]
and it's raining, and it's cold, it's wet,
and the mosquitos are, like, totally [bleep] with us tonight.
She's getting bit up. I'm getting bit up.
Holy [bleep] that hurts.
Christina: Oh, my god.
These bitches bite you over in the same spot every time.
Oh, god, this hurts.
Mm-hmm.
It's itching so bad.
I'm so tired right now.
You and me both.
I can't sleep.
[ sighs ] I know.
First night, the bats
were helping us get the mosquitoes out of the way.
But since we've got the fire, they took off.
So we had to fend for ourselves with the mosquitoes.
If we keep the mosquitoes out of here tonight,
we'll sleep like babies.
Christina: The jungle has definitely beat my ass.
So I was talking some mad [bleep] last night.
Steve remained calm.
He was just like, "you got to stop being so negative."
and I'm like, "man [bleep] you.
You be positive. I'm gonna be realistic.
I'm, like, dying over here."
oh, god.
This is a nightmare.
Steve: Christina -- I can't think of how many times
she's screamed like, "ow," or, "oh, I'm done."
she likes to vocalize when something's wrong, and I don't,
because I think it adds negativity to the situation.
You know, if it wasn't for the mosquitoes,
it would have been awesome.
The mosquitoes are awful.
Christina: You know, when you raise a teenage daughter alone,
you don't have the luxury
to sit around and feel sorry for yourself.
Instead, I'm gonna get out,
and I'm gonna do something about my situation.
It's a termite's nest.
Narrator: Since termites contain trace amounts of nepthalene,
a chemical used for fumigation,
burning the nest sometimes acts as a natural insect repellant.
Christina: This nest is a really good find, but I hav
not actually the water. I'm a great swimmer.
I have a fear of what's underneath the water
because I can't see it.
Aah!
Something bit me.
This is a little nerve-racking.
[ chuckles ] that's some [bleep] right there.
I am becoming a jungle queen fo' sure.
Jane ain't got [bleep] on me.
[ insects buzzing ]
damn it.
Steve: Yeah, there's just tons of them.
Once again, the mosquitoes are striking in full force.
They have been all night.
Oh, my god.
I would never wish this on anyone.
The bug bites alone is worth [bleep]
ow.
Ow!
[ insects buzzing ]
[ insects buzzing ]
christina: Ow. Ow!
The jungle sucks.
I would never wish this on anyone.
The bug bites alone is worth [bleep]
tapping the [bleep] out.
[ sniffles ]
another sleepless night because
[voice breaking] the mosquitoes
are completely devouring my body.
And it's just emotionally breaking me down.
So, I always make things better.
That's what single moms do, you know?
And I can't.
[ groans ]
god, I can't believe I cried so much today.
Day ain't over yet.
Yeah, and this is like the most I've cried
in probably 15 years. I fully believe it.
When I tell my daughter how much I cried,
she's gonna probably flip out, 'cause she's never seen me cry.
It's healthy to cry. Get it out. Let it go.
Just remember why you're here.
Steve: Part of my job is to coach people on confidence
and, you know, not giving up
and not worry about what's going wrong
and think about what can go right.
God, that was so miserable.
Let's not think that way. Just got to stay strong.
Christina: Steve definitely has patience, and I appreciate that,
but it's really hard.
It's really hard
when you don't have the food in your system and the sleep.
I think one of the reasons I'm so emotional
is I haven't eaten anything since that snake.
Today, it is going to be food priority.
[ sighs ] checking my trap.
Ah!
Something set it off,
but I don't think they're interested in the meat.
I'm gonna reset this bad boy.
You put me in, you know, eastern kentucky,
and I will kill anything that's in front of me,
but this jungle is so hard.
Steve: I'm definitely feeling the effects of not sleeping,
and I don't feel as sharp mentally.
But if we get a little food in our system,
even if I don't sleep, I feel like I can still push through.
Made this fish trap.
I'm gonna try setting it in a shallow spot here
and if it works,
set it in a deeper spot with a little longer cord.
Christina: Ow! Damn it. These [bleep]
yes. Okay.
Last night
was incrementally worse than the previous seven nights
due to, well, lack of sleep.
All night long, all she did was bitch and moan and yell
about the mosquitoes, which were biting me, as well.
It's pretty frustrating when someone
that's going through the exact same thing as you
just wants to talk about how miserable it is.
So, I was gonna hang out outside for the fire
[sighs] so I wouldn't get bit by mosquitoes and fleas.
It's not working.
I'm so exhausted.
I got mud all over me.
It's just so cold, though.
Oh [bleep]
oh, geez.
Man, ow, ow, ow!
Welcome to my rock.
Every day, I like to start off here,
with positive thoughts and positive vibes,
refocus after the evenings,
because -- I'm gonna be perfectly honest --
they're [bleep] miserable.
And it's not the jungle. It's my partner.
Every night, I have to deal with her incessant complaining.
I just hate dealing with this,
'cause it's cold and it's wet and it sucks.
[ sighs ] this sucks.
Guess what. I don't need that.
The rain messes with our shelter, the firewood.
It's just -- it's exhausting and depressing.
Steve: In normal life, I help coach people,
I help build people up, and I'm very accommodating.
[ sighs ] oh, my god. I'm so hungry.
Yeah.
But at this point, my patience is really wearing thin.
Today, we're building a raised platform
so that we can get off of the ground
and hopefully away from the bugs.
If we don't, we will probably not be happy tomorrow,
or the next day, or the next nine days.
I will be so happy if the bugs do not get on us tonight.
I will, too. I don't even want to think about it right now.
It feels so good right now just to lay down off the ground.
Uh...
What?
This -- I don't know, I don't know.
I don't know. This is gonna hurt my ass.
You've got the more comfy side,
'cause yours has a bigger gap in the middle.
[ sighs ]
oh, and it's so downhill!
[ thunder rumbles, rainfall ]
[ scoffs ]
[ thunder crashes ]
[ thunder rumbles, rainfall ]
steve: Last night was [bleep] horrendous.
I pride myself on patience, but it is gone.
[ sighs ]
christina: I can give a [bleep] if he's mad, seriously.
I'm just gonna try not to talk to him as much as I can.
The only words I'm gonna be sharing with him
is if it's something about surviving, and that's it.
[ monkey hooting ]
[ insects buzzing ]
[ sighs ]
last night, after...Whatever yesterday was, she was quiet.
And guess who slept well. This guy.
I feel so much better than I did yesterday.
It worked out really well.
I think I have a little extra energy today.
Christina: This morning, after waking up, I realize that,
you know, we just both need to be adults.
[ sighs ]
do you want water?
I do.
I think it would be a good idea.
All right.
Is your stomach not painful?
Yeah. I just try to ignore it and block it.
[ sighs ] I don't really have a stomach anymore.
I can't to do that.
I know.
It's like such sharp pains right now,
like somebody's stabbing me.
I didn't do it.
I know.
Steve: To be honest,
this challenge would probably be easier on my own,
but it's not really me
to just sit back and watch someone else fail.
So I will do everything I can to try to help her at this point,
'cause that's what I do.
I'm cutting into the bayal here.
The center has kind of got some of, I guess, sugar properties.
So we're getting a little sugar out of it.
I got the good part of the bayal plant.
I finally cut enough of them down and cut my fingers enough
that I found the good part.
Would you like to try a piece? It's delicious.
Yay. Yes.
I'm starving.
Here.
Thank you.
Isn't it delicious?
Mm-hmm.
Bayal plant --
it's been about the best food source I've found so far here.
Christina: I so appreciate that he did that for both of us.
I hope I can make the next five days and get out of here.
Oh, it's so hard, though.
Mmm.
That was really good.
[ thunder rumbles ]
[ thunder crashes, rainfall ]
[ groans ]
[bleep]
son of a bitch.
Yeah. [ sighs ]
[bleep]
oh, my gosh. This sucks.
[ sniffles ]
what's going on?
It's just I'm hungry.
I just really want to leave.
I can't do this anymore.
Why do you want to leave right now?
[ voice breaking ] I'm just so hungry and tired.
I don't want to trek out of here by myself.
That'd be boring.
I don't want to sleep on the floor anymore.
I just want to go.
Would you want me to leave you?
No. No.
Don't you think you're pretty incredibly strong
for making it to this point?
I just can't do this anymore.
If you get food, can you make it?
I think if I get food, I can make it.
Can we make a deal?
If I can catch food in the next 24 hours.
I'm gonna go try right now. Is that fair?
Yeah.
Lo and behold, there is no fish.
Oh, my god.
I just stumbled across a coral snake.
Super, super deadly venomous.
They have lots of little teeth,
and they inject a bunch of venom,
and they bite multiple times.
There she is.
Damn. Too fast. She's gone.
Christina: Not really proud of myself at all right now.
I really want to make it through the 21 days.
I want to do it for me, my daughter, my family.
I just don't know if I can.
[ sighs ]
I can't express how difficult this is
to anybody who thinks that it's easy, 'cause it's not.
It's really [bleep] hard.
A little food right now would be like a miracle.
And I'm trying to stay strong for her,
and I'm trying to stay strong for myself.
[ voice breaking ] 'cause this is beyond anything.
Narrator: Before beginning
their 21-day challenge in the mexican jungles of quintana roo,
steve and christina were both given
a primitive survival rating, or psr.
Christina has struggled mightily
with lack of food and mosquito-filled nights
and is on the verge of tapping out.
[ voice breaking ] I'm just so hungry and tired.
I just really want to leave.
Despite his frustration and significant lack of sleep,
steve has taken it upon himself
to find the food they need to stay in the challenge
but is on the brink of collapse.
[ sighs ]
a little food right now would be like a miracle.
[ voice breaking ] 'cause this is beyond anything
that I could have ever thought I would possibly do
physically, mentally, emotionally.
I've been trying to help somebody else along the way.
It's tough. It's really tough.
Steve: Listen. Did you hear that?
Christina: What is it?
I have no clue.
Can't see anything.
Oh, my god.
Holy [bleep]
[ shouts indistinctly ]
I got it.
So, steve just caught two toads! And we're starving!
I'm sorry. I love these little guys, but they're dinner.
I'm sorry. I really feel bad, too.
Don't. Cut their heads off, and let's do it.
You're gonna have to do it.
Steve is a reptile guy.
He doesn't want to do it, so I'm gonna do it.
Cut their eight legs off and eat. Ooh, I can't wait.
There's one.
Yep. Got him.
I can't even tell you how excited I am right now,
just the meat hanging off of them.
I think once these get in my tummy, I mud up,
I'll go right to sleep. Good.
Oh, so good.
Mm-hmm.
Game changer, big-time.
Christina: That was eight toad legs that
the enthusiasm and just happiness
that I produced last night just from that, it was just amazing.
Nothing bothered us. Didn't care if the mosquitoes were swarming.
We just had our best dinner ever.
Wow. That's a lot of firewood.
Yeah. I've been collecting this morning.
I'm gonna break it all down,
collect some more throughout the day.
Wow.
I love the energy.
I love the flip of the switch that she just had.
It was just so amazing.
And it really gave me hope
that we were gonna make it through this together again.
I just thought I was such a hardcore bitch,
and then I come in here, and now,
just the emotions that I'm feeling --
you know what? You know what's crazy?
Is that when I left my child and my parents before coming here,
I didn't shed one tear, and I was actually proud of that.
Most people are. That's the way we're brought up.
Crying shows weakness. But crying's not weakness.
Now you've humbled yourself a little bit.
You realize you're not quite as hard as you wanted to be
and you actually have that compassionate side.
I'm a 38-year-old woman
that is just now getting in touch with her emotions.
It's pretty... Pretty interesting.
You have, like, kicked ass while you've been out here,
and you have uplifted me and done so much for me.
Thank you.
Steve: I think I have a partner back.
I have to pee. Me too.
How far are we going to pee?
Right here.
I'm going right here.
Christina: Where are you, then?
And go.
[ urinating ]
[ laughs ]
oh, my god. I am the winner.
[ laughs ] that's the [bleep] right there.
Christina: Are you packed? Steve: Yeah.
Ready to put this out? Yes.
Goodbye.
Put it out. I'm ready to go.
It is extraction day.
A little bit nervous because it's a steep, steep climb,
and it's gonna take some energy
to get through all of the dense jungle,
and we're going through some uncharted territory.
Let's see what we have here.
We're gonna walk down, go up around this ridge,
and take a little swim. That's the deal.
Okay, let's do this. Let's go.
To reach their extraction point,
steve and christina must head west
on a treacherous, four-mile hike
through mountainous jungle terrain to this lake,
and then swim half a mile to safety on the other side.
Ow [bleep]
hanging in there?
[ sighs ]
looks like we're going down, darling.
Oh [bleep]
you all right?
Yeah. Just watch out for the rocks.
Almost to the water, I hope.
It's gonna be so freaky.
Eh, it will be fine.
I don't like to get into things I can't see.
I'll go first, and that way, if anything wants to eat us,
it will eat me first, and you'll be fine.
The crocodiles always get the second person.
[ monkey hooting ]
oh, wow.
Oh.
Oh [bleep]
this looks scary.
Got enough juice to swim? I sure hope so.
Good.
It looks like
little slide marks from where a crocodile went in.
[ sarcastically ] great.
There is nothing that is going to stop me
from getting the [bleep] out of here.
Let's do it.
Steve: Delicious.
Oh, yeah. I can't see anything underneath me.
Can you just swim?
G-give me -- don't push me!
Just swim, just swim.
If you want to go in front of me and swim, that's fine.
Oh [bleep]
what is this stuff?
I'm already out of juice.
You got enough gas in the tank?
I don't know.
This way, girl.
I'm barely making it, though.
Just come to me.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel.
All we need to do is push a little further and we're there.
We're at the end of the marathon.
No one quits on mile 25. You push, and you push hard.
[ grunts ]
oh [bleep]
come here.
Get in the sun.
Looks like that's us.
Oh, we did it!
This has definitely been a life-changing experience.
There's no question about it. Oh [bleep]
I thought the jungle was gonna be the difficult part,
but it was really trying to partner and live with someone
in this environment. It's our ride!
My patience was tested, my energy levels were tested,
my sleep deprivation was tested,

I think I needed to be here for her,
and I think she needed to be here to remind me
that I'm on the right path and I'm doing the ri
whoo! Give me five.
Christina: The jungle really kicked my ass.
[ voice breaking ] this is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life,
and I can reach down now
and know that it's okay to show emotion,
and it just opens up so many doors in my real life.
Mwah!
I cannot wait to share this experience with my daughter
and just let her know.
It is amazing what you can actually do
when you set your mind to it.
[bleep] jungle.
[ laughs ]

it's a beautiful day in kentucky.
I'm just so glad to be here with my daughter.
I'm so excited, glad to be home.
It was a great experience in the jungle.
I do not miss it at all.
This is me in bed with blankets and pillows...
And no mosquitoes.
