PROLOGUE: THE GREAT CATACLYSM

A long time ago, mankind suffered from the planet's anger,

and the world was engulfed in flames.

It was the Great Cataclysm.

The flames burned ferociously,

with an intensity threatening to incinerate the places mankind lived,

the languages they spoke, and the culture they had built up.

CHAPTER ONE: HOLY FIRE

As the world was being covered in ash, one man appeared.

He would later be called Raffles I.

Raffles I took his disciples on a journey in search of light.

At the end of his journey, he found an "unsullied flame"

and brought forth the light that would be mankind's salvation.

CHAPTER TWO: AMATERASU

Raffles I and his disciples used the flame bestowed by the Great Sol

and the technology cultivated by mankind to create "Amaterasu."

The sacred flame of Amaterasu benefits the lives of mankind

and ended up establishing the foundation of a state in the Far East.

SHINRA AND HEBIO SQUAD

Crewman Shinra, I'm Lieutenant Hebio. I'm looking forward to working with you.

I look forward to working with you.

I hear you have experience with missions in the Netherworld.

We'll be counting on you.

Yes, sir.

We've never embarked on a mission as split up as this before.

Is leaving Arthur on his own a good idea?

I did give them a handbook on how to handle him...

Gentlemen, your attention! My name is Arthur Boyle, the Knight King!

You will follow my orders!

I am the one in command here!

Who are you, barbarian? Bow yourself to me, you fool!

What did you...

Lieutenant Heckler!

According to the Company 8 Arthur Boyle Care and Feeding Manual,

if you lead him along appropriately,

he will work for you with moderate compliance.

King Arthur, I am Commander Heckler, head of the order,

and have been placed in command here!

Very well. You may take command.

Lieutenant Hinawa, I look forward to working with you today.

I am the one looking forward to working with you.

Hey, who are you?

Let me through! I'm coming with you!

Takigi Oze, CID. I've been authorized to join you.

Detective Oze, in your condition...

It's not a problem. I won't do anything to slow you down.

I want to see the results of my investigation for myself.

Detective Oze.

You're Lieutenant Hinawa, the one who tricked Maki.

Tricked?

In an emergency, I will protect you personally,

so you can focus on your-

I don't need any of your help!

Don't think less of me because I'm a detective!

At least wear this turnout coat.

Thank you.

All right, into the Netherworld!

A shopping center inside the Netherworld. How creepy.

Yes! The same squad as Kotatsu!

Juggernaut, you seem to be acting pretty calm.

This is the Netherworld!

I grew up out in the country where it was always dark,

so the darkness doesn't bother me at all.

Are you serious?

That's amazing, given how dark this is.

Kotatsu is clinging to me!

Now I wish I hadn't worn so many layers!

Juggernaut, is that Crewman Kotatsu, the one you're always talking about?

Hey, Hajiki!

I'm Company 2 First Class Fire Soldier and Platoon Leader Hajiki.

SPECIAL FIRE FORCE COMPANY 2 PLATOON LEADER, AMON HAJIKI

I'm a little bit forgetful but nice to meet you.

Hey! Hajiki, how could you do that to Kotatsu?

No way, was that me?

I can't shut off my lucky lechery!

Why are you undressed? Did I lose my memories? "Lucky lechery"?

Hajiki, what are you doing?

Have I done something? Have I lost my memories again?

I wonder if there's a hospital here in the Netherworld.

-An explosion? -Now what? Burning lechery?

Medic!

Did you get your thermal sensors set?

All finished.

Man,

this is like being in that zombie movie I just watched.

Lieutenant Ohana!

What is it?

Please come over here, sir!

Infernals, down in the Netherworld?

And this many of them?

No!

There is an abundance of bodies in the Netherworld,

left undisposed from the Great Cataclysm.

The Knights of the Ashen Flame

aren't the only knights serving under the Evangelist.

Let's go, Knights of the Purple Smoke.

KNIGHTS OF THE PURPLE SMOKE

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

This soul, return to the raging flames.

Latom.

Natasha, once this next mission is over, we'll get married.

I'm so happy, Jonas.

Jonas!

They got Jonas!

Damn it!

I'll take time off and be back the day you deliver.

I'm sure he'll be a healthy boy, just like you, Anton.

Anton!

Fire!

Once this next mission is over,

I'm putting on these brand-spanking-new sneakers.

Are you all right? Watch yourself!

Lucky for me, my life flashing before my eyes was so lackluster...

Anton?

The fallen crewmen!

The bodies of the killed crewmen are walking around!

It's that White-Clad woman we fought at Haijima,

whose power is to control dead bodies!

Damn it, this isn't getting us anywhere...

Yes, of course!

Anybody from Company 8!

Necro Pyro.

Fight and kill each other.

Let me go!

Juggernaut!

Honestly, there's no helping that guy.

Ju...

Hajiki! What if you had hit me?

If I didn't have so many layers on, this could have been bad!

Relax, I know what's inside there.

You lean left-of-center, don't you?

No, it's on the right! Boy, you sure are forgetful, Hajiki.

You didn't get hit even once by that?

As bundled up as I am, of course, it would be hard to hit me.

Both of you, stay behind me.

Crewman Kotatsu, the prayer, if you would?

Oh, right.

Platoon Leader Hajiki, behind you!

Incredible! What fancy shooting!

Elegant, isn't he? I wish I could do that.

It's like Platoon Leader Hajiki has eyes in the back of his head.

Hajiki was chosen as the MVP non-powered rookie crewman

at the Rookie Games five years ago, as I understand it.

He's non-powered?

No...

The truth is, thanks to his usual forgetfulness,

he just forgot his ability on his application.

Hajiki's ability is there, in his eyes.

Just like a thermal scope, he can see the heat being emitted by objects,

and can even see targets through walls.

I heard that at the Rookie Games, he went straight to the goal.

Save those in need of rescuing,

then reach the crewman playing the Infernal first!

Up there, on the fourth floor.

So that's why when he riddled you with bullets earlier,

he was able to avoid hitting you.

Hajiki can see what I have going on even under all these layers.

All finished. Putting-to-rest is complete.

You saved us! I'm so glad I'm with you, Hajiki!

Thanks for waiting. Can you use your ability to see

where the other crewmen we got separated from are?

I sure can.

Let's rejoin them right now.

A White-Clad!

Hold on. This one is...

I am Orochi, Knight of the Purple Smoke, she who teareth her foes asunder.

Do not carry on so. I will send you to join him now.

It can't be! Hajiki just got...

Juggernaut is in total panic mode.

I have to do something.

Platoon Leader Hajiki got taken out in an instant.

What is her weapon? What did she use?

If not even Platoon Leader Hajiki could avoid her attack with his eyes...

then I don't have a chance of avoiding her.

But if her attack itself is made of flame,

then with my high tolerance to flame, I might be able to withstand it.

What do we have here?

You can withstand this?

Intriguing. I'm laying into you to slice you, but it's bouncing off.

It's as though I'm attacking a rubber ball.

If I can't cut you, I'll run you through.

It's only a matter of time before I gouge out your insides.

Your high tolerance will only mean you suffer more.

You'll be out of your misery soon.

If you ever get in trouble again, call for me anytime.

Kusakabe...

Help me...

Hero...

"Two"?

Hey, you!

Fire!

Come on, man. You're even afraid of the fire from this lighter?

If you're afraid of something, it doesn't matter if it's big or small!

Despite being as big as you are?

You won't be able to protect your favorite girl if you're a mousy guy.

No girl would ever give me a second look anyway.

Have faith in yourself.

You have a tremendous amount of firepower, after all.

I'm sure you also have enough courage to go with your size.

Don't be afraid of a little flame.

I'm sorry, Hajiki. This is all because I'm so pathetic.

I have to stop being such a whiner all the time.

I have to protect Kotatsu!

I'm strong! Yes, I am! And big!

Medusa Whip!

She's defending against that heavy barrage?

Such is the strand count and torque of my Medusa Whip!

Spinning my whip defensively creates a barricade,

while simultaneously attacking with the force of each strand.

Medusa Whip.

MEDUSA WHIP

So it is.

Your tactic of merely scattering attacks about is easily defeated.

In that case...

HUMAN-TO-SURFACE-ROCKET

Even that?

You surface-dwellers are feeble. This is the Netherworld!

What exactly do you have going on inside there?

First I face a girl with high flame tolerance, and now a hollow man?

I am facing many opponents today worth striking down!

Looks like I finally hit you.

I'm strong.

Juggernaut...

Kotatsu!

It's okay, Kotatsu! I promise you, I won't lose!

I'm going to avenge Hajiki!

I can't bear to be a coward forever!

Takeru, so this is where ya done run off to?

Ma, I don't wanna go to no army. I wanna look after the potatoes.

Ya ain't gotta choice. Takeru, 'member, yer a Third Generation.

Ya gotta go join the Tokyo Fire Force

'cuz it'd be too dangerous if ya don't do nothin'.

The potato fields ya love so much could go to their 'ternal reward, too.

Come on.

You're a man, aren't you? Don't be so jittery.

Hajiki, you're asking the impossible.

You won't be able to protect anyone like this.

I'm here because I had no choice.

I didn't become a Fire Soldier because I wanted to.

Being a Fire Soldier is a job for brave people.

I know it's not a job that I'm cut out for.

Not so fast. Only you know who you really are.

Are you absolutely sure?

Yer so timid for somebody who's so big, Takeru.

But ya gotta huge flame to go with yer huge body, and yer ma's proud of ya.

I just wanna live simple, workin' muh fields is all.

That's dizzy talk! Potato fields're big things.

It's no job fer a small man, y'know.

I'm a great big Fire Soldier!

Stop struggling, simpleton! All you're good for is getting hit!

Juggernaut!

It looks like my whips have at last located your insides.

I'm going to be a man!

I'm going to have courage!

You will never lay so much as a finger on me!

I'll slice you to ribbons.

What is with this guy?

There's no stopping him.
