(gloomy music)

(screaming)

- You're just about there! (heavy breathing)

You're almost there. Okay.

(screeches)

(baby cries)

- Hi, little baby.

- Hi, baby.

- Hi, little Billy.

- Oh, you're so beautiful.

- You look just like your dad.

(chuckling)

(light music)

- Thank you everyone for coming

and making this night so magical.

I wanna make a toast to

my beautiful wife, Mallory, who is my guiding light.

And to our incredible son, Billy, who I think is destined

to be an Olympic sport climber.

(guests laugh) Looking good out there, champ.

Now, as most of you know,

Mallory's most recent, and worst, stroke has left her

with some pretty severe memory loss.

(guests): Uh-huh. Mm-hmm.

- But you'll be happy to know that she's getting better

every day, and we couldn't have done it without

your kindness and support, so thank you so much.

But when I learned that Mallory couldn't remember

our wedding day, well,

I knew I had to throw the most grandiose party

to make up for it. (laughs)

And to be honest, I can't take full credit.

I just helped fund the event.

The decorations, the organization,

all of that, is Mallory. (guests): Amen.

- So, take a bow, babe, you deserve it.

(cheering) She's the real pro here, so...

(clapping)

- Hmm, thank you. (chuckles)

- Along with her business partner, Linda,

they have one of the finest event planning companies in the area.

And with Mallory returning to work after a long recovery,

we would be forever grateful if you could help spread the word

about their being back in business.

They've got some brand new business cards,

so make sure you take one before you leave.

- I'll come to you.

- Now, let's make some new memories!

(all): Cheers!

(overlapping chatter)

(sentimental music)

- I wish I remembered how you proposed.

- Well, I didn't plan it.

We were on our way back from a friend's wedding

and I got down on one knee in the middle of the street,

and I said, "Mallory, will you make me the happiest man in the world?

I promise to make all of our dreams come true."

- And I said, "Yes, I do."

(chuckles)

- And four years later, Billy was born.

Would you say I made good on that promise?

- Oh, that and more.

- Hmm.

- Yeah, it's been hard.

The last big migraine was about

a month ago after the stroke.

- But uh, we've been back on track

and we weren't recently hired to work on a wedding.

Yeah, so it's been good.

- It's great to catch up, but we've gotta go.

- You have our cards, right? Cool.

- Nice seeing you.

(jazz music)

Why was the woman in the red jumpsuit looking at me?

It made me feel uncomfortable.

- Oh, maybe she wanted to say hi.

She's always been a tad shy.

- I can't wait to stop feeling paranoid

every time I see someone I don't remember.

- Didn't the doctor say it would take time?

I can make you a list of important past clients

and acquaintances if that would help?

- I would love that. - Sure.

- Do I have any... enemies?

Anyone I should be afraid of? (chuckles)

- Enemies? No, not that I know of.

I mean, if someone's mean to you, I always try to step in.

- I appreciate it.

I'm gonna check on Billy. - Sure.

Hey.

- Tired?

- Yeah.

Can I play video games with Rory tomorrow?

- Mmm, let me think about it.

Let me see if your dad is ready to wrap up for the night.

Okay?

Okay. - Okay.

- That whole business is booming.

Got a brand new location in the northeast.

Premium Autoworks is expanding.

- Boys and their toys. - Hey.

- Um, Billy's just really tired. - Hmm.

Gentlemen.

- Nice seeing you.

- I'm guessing Billy's not the only one.

(chuckles)

Here we go.

- Oh. - Oh, whoop. That's gone.

- Good night, little rabbit.

I love you. - Love you too, Mom.

- Yeah. - Night, champ.

- Love you, Dad. - Love you.

(gentle music)

(school bell rings)

(indistinct chatter)

(Mallory): Hey, honey!

Hi! How was your day?

- It was all right. - Yeah, did you learn anything new?

(sighs) - I made a new friend at recess.

- Oh, you did? What's his name?

- It's not a boy, Mom.

- Oh, sorry.

Ooh, what's her name?

- Samantha. - What's she like?

- Nice, I guess. - Will I ever get to meet her?

- Is she pretty? - Mom!

- What?

- Don't be gross! - Okay, I'll be a little gross.

(calm music)

Billy, your dad's home!

How was work?

- Took the rest of the day off.

- Well, I made sandwiches. Hope you like them.

- I will love them.

- Dad! Dad!

- Hey! (Mallory): Billy.

- Mm! Mwah!

- What did I say about running near the stairs?

- Don't run by the stairs

because you could slip and fall.

- Yes, you know what happened to Mommy.

You don't want that to happen to you, okay?

- Okay. (Reese): Let's get your boots.

- So, Billy met a new friend today.

- Is that so?

- Yes, she's a girl, and I asked if she was pretty,

and he said, "Gross."

- I see how it is.

Don't wanna be getting cooties, huh?

(chuckles)

Oh, your mama infected me a long time ago.

- Let's go, bud.

- All right, frisbee time!

(chuckles)

(sweet music)

(ducks quacking)

- So, Billy, I made your favourite sandwich.

- Thank you. - Dad, this is for you. - Oh, hey, thank you.

Got too many things.

- Honey, you can read at home.

Why don't we throw the frisbee around, huh?

- This is my favourite spot to read.

- I know, but why don't we try

something different for a change? Come.

Watch Mom and Dad.

- Yeah, your mom's really good.

- I'm pretty good.

And... you're missing out!

Oh! (screams)

See, ah, you're missing out! Did you see that?

- Very good, very good. - I'm not just a mom, okay,

I'm also an athlete.

Come on. You got this! Come on! Oh!

- Come on, buddy! - Come on!

Woo-hoo!

- I got it! - Almost got me there.

- Okay, I'm gonna throw it to you, okay?

- Here you go. - Okay.

Woo! Good job! - Nice!

- Okay, throw it to your dad. - All right, you got it.

- Ooh, you got it! - Ooh, that was good!

That was good. - Smart move.

- What you wanna do is you face

the person you're throwing to...

(echoing away): take a step across your body and...

(ethereal music)

- Awesome! - Hey!

(chuckles) - What do you say, little rabbit?

- Thanks, Aunt Linda. Thank you.

(gasps) - He's so sweet.

(chuckles)

(breathes deeply)

- Over here. Oh!

See, I'm an athlete. (chuckles)

You got it! Perfect. Good job!

- Nice, buddy.

(peaceful music)

- What's it like being back in the office?

- Surreal. (chuckles)

I remember parts of being here,

but definitely doesn't do it justice.

I wanted to thank you for

taking care of the office when I was gone.

- Hey, that's what business partners are for.

Besides, it's a lot, you know?

With taking care of your family on top of the memory loss.

- So, how did your date go with Paige?

(sighs)

- It was fine, but we just didn't have enough chemistry.

- Hmm. - Still better than some of my other online dates, though.

- Tell me how. (laughs)

Okay. Most people just aren't who they say they are anymore.

Like, one woman was much shorter than she said online.

I'm starting to think there aren't any available women out there anymore.

- You are amazing, okay?

You're pretty, and witty, and intelligent.

I'm sure you will find the right person.

- Ugh, tell that to the women. (laughs)

(alarm beeping)

- It's a, uh... Amber Alert.

- Where is it?

- It's like an hour away from here.

(deep sigh)

Reese and I took so long

to have a baby, I don't know what I would do if I lost Billy.

- You won't! - I know.

I'm just saying.

(door opens)

- Ready for our first client back? - Mm-hmm.

- Hi! - Good morning!

- Uh, Jason, is it?

- Right. - Great. Linda.

Mallory's just around the back.

(bright music)

- Ready, guys? - You ready?

- Three, two, one, go! - Ah!

Oh, my goodness. (laughs)

Oh, my goodness! Oh my! Oh, God! Oh, God!

(Reese): You're doing good! (overlapping chatter)

Oh, this is neck and neck. - Oh!

- Billy wins! (cheering)

Champion of the world!

- Yeah! - Yes!

- Good job! (laughs)

(sighs)

- Hey, that's a new one.

Where'd you get that? - Samantha gave it to me.

- Really? (Mallory): She did, when?

- Earlier.

- When you were outside playing?

(ominous music)

(scoffs) - Was her mom with her?

- No. - Huh.

Well, next time she stops by, can you let us know?

- Dad's turn.

- All right, but you're racing against a pro this time.

- Oh, yes, you are. - Better bring your A-game.

(bright music) You feeling this confident about

your climbing competition coming up?

(sighs) - Mom, can we go to the climbing gym to practise tomorrow?

Please?!

- I don't know, the way you just beat your mother like that?

I don't know! Maybe!

I don't know! I don't know! (Reese laughs)

(upbeat rock music)

No running!

(gloomy music)

Billy?

Billy!

Billy!

(indistinct chatter)

Honey, can you come here?

Stay where I can see you, okay? Don't wander off without me.

- I'm sorry. - It's okay.

- Okay.

(upbeat rock music)

- Afraid of heights, loser?

- You're doing great, Billy.

- Mallory, I knew that was you.

- Hannah! Small world.

- Yeah. Is Vanessa giving you a hard time?

- Her son.

- Ugh. You know, they're a real piece of work.

I heard she took a bat to the principal's car for

giving Gavin detention.

So, what brings you here?

- Billy just wants to practise for his climbing competitions.

- Oh, Billy's always been such a go-getter.

- Is Rory here?

- No, no, he's at home, playing video games.

Just thought I'd come for a workout.

Um, did... did uh, Reese come with you?

- He's in a business meeting, golfing.

- Well, that's fun. (chuckles)

Uh, you know, you're lucky that

you have someone like Reese to support you.

All Trevor does is sit on the couch.

- So, how is the book fair?

- Ugh! It's a hassle,

along with every other PTA responsibility.

You know, uh, your help would really be a blessing.

(ominous music) Our winter festival would thrive under the guidance of

someone with your creative spirit.

- Just uh... I'll be right back.

Hey, Billy, can I talk to you for a second?

Hey, honey.

Are you okay? What was she whispering to you about?

- She said I'm a good climber.

- Is she one of your teachers? - No.

- Is she one of Mommy's friends from before?

- Samantha didn't tell me.

- She's Samantha's mom?

- No, she is Samantha.

(dramatic boom)

- I thought that...

Samantha was a... a kid from school?

- No, that's her.

- I... we... we've gotta go.

- We just got here! - We can come some other time.

- When? - Tomorrow.

She is a stranger and a grown-up.

Billy, kids don't play with grown-ups.

- Hey! I'm sorry. (gasps)

I didn't mean to startle you. - Yeah, we just...

we have to go home.

- Yeah. Okay, bye.

- You never noticed Samantha working at your school, honey?

Billy, can you speak to me when I'm talking to you?

- No.

- How many times did you see her before this?

Was it just at school and when she came to the house?

- Twice.

Do I have to give the car back?

- Not if you promise me to stay away from her. Okay?

And tell me if you see her again.

- I promise.

- Okay.

It's okay.

(♪)

- Hey, bud.

Training ended early.

Well, it couldn't have been that bad.

- Mom made us leave.

- Tell him why we left, honey.

We met Samantha today.

- Ah! What's she like?

- In her 30s.

(sinister music)

(Billy imitating car sounds)

Vroom! Screech! Vroom! Vroom!

- Hey, bud.

So, why didn't you tell us that Samantha was a grown-up?

- You didn't ask her age.

(scoffs)

- Well, what do you know about her?

What does Samantha talk to you about?

- Stuff.

- Honey, can you be a bit more specific?

- What TV shows and food I like.

She asked if I wanted chocolate with peanut butter,

but I said I couldn't have it.

- Did she ask you to follow her to her car or her home?

- No.

- Has she asked you about me or your mom?

- No.

- How did she know where you lived? Did you tell her?

Okay, we can do this some other time.

How is studying for your math test coming along?

- Okay. - Okay, so why don't you finish

your practice quiz and I will go over it with you later.

Okay.

- Okay.

(suspenseful music)

(Mallory): Why would she know our address?

Is it possible I know her?

- Hmm, what does she look like?

- She had red hair, blue eyes,

athletic build, I guess.

- Uh, doesn't sound familiar.

- Well, what could she want from us?

- I don't know.

- We need to contact the police.

- Oh, they won't be any help.

We have no evidence she's done anything.

We don't even know her last name.

If anything else happens, we'll... we'll go to the police, okay?

- Mm-hmm.

(Dr. Fields): So, when did the migraines start?

- They started after the sports climbing gym.

- I think they're likely caused by anxiety and stress.

I'm going to prescribe you the same medication as before.

How are you doing otherwise?

- Um, I remember fragments of

my memories, um, with Reese and Billy,

um, growing up, and my friendship with Linda.

- Have you made any new memories?

- They're blurry.

Can't remember much.

After the last two strokes,

I couldn't remember everything, and then, after the third one...

(sad music)

it got worse.

And I'm just...

worried that I might not

remember anything again, so...

- As long as you don't give up, there's a chance.

There you go. - Thank you.

(indistinct chatter)

- You did a fantastic job for your anniversary.

(chuckles)

Have you ever thought about getting married?

- All the time!

Whether I'll meet Mrs. Right

to settle down and start a family with,

that's another question altogether.

- You will.

- Thanks.

So, Tiffany and Nancy said that

they want the wedding to be hip and fun.

- Um, I'm thinking bright colours, and flowers,

and maybe we put a dance floor

in the middle of the room.

- I'm so glad to have you back. (chuckles)

Um, we're gonna have so many

amazing photo opportunities from the wedding.

We can use it to build our business profile online.

- What kind of reach can we have?

- In my dreams, the whole country.

- Can social media really do all that?

- Mmm, realistically, probably only the rest of Oregon.

- Well, that's at least a lot of

opportunities, right? - Mm-hmm.

(phone rings)

Oh. Do you wanna...

- No, no, it's...

- Sure.

Hey!

Yes. No, it's no problem.

Uh, ETA?

- Okay. Okay, bye.

(curious music)

(Linda sighs)

Tiffany said that they're stuck in traffic,

but they're on their way.

(phone rings)

- School?

Hello? Mallory speaking.

(sinister music)

Is Billy okay?

Is he hurt?

Yes, my husband and I, we'll... we'll be right there.

Okay, thank you.

- The teacher found Billy drawing this in class.

- Do you have any update on Samantha?

Because this has to be about her.

There's nothing new happening in our lives.

- Nobody has ever heard of her before.

- Well, nobody on your staff was paying attention

and a predator was able to get to our son.

- We've increased security protocols.

- After it happened. She never should've even been able to get that far.

- What... kind of protocols?

- We've advised all the staff to keep a closer eye on Billy

and to be extra vigilant of any strangers.

- Are there any other drawings?

- No.

- You'd better get a handle on this,

because if anything happens to my son, I'm going to sue

and hold you personally responsible.

Come on.

- I'm sorry. I just...

there's a lot going on because of all this.

I'm sorry.

- Hey, buddy!

- Hey, honey! Hi! Come here.

(light music)

How was your ride home?

(sighs) - I hate riding on the bus.

Whatever it was, it's an accident, I swear.

- Listen, you are not in trouble.

But... honey, why did you draw this?

(curious music)

- Did someone say you'd be in trouble if you told?

- And what is the drawing of?

- Captain Vigilant saving someone from Dr. Monstruso.

The teacher didn't let me finish.

(relieved sigh)

- And if it was something more than that,

you would tell us, right?

- That's all it was.

- And why didn't you tell your teacher?

- The whole class was looking at us.

- Hey, I hated public speaking when I was your age too.

Just be careful what you draw, okay?

We thought you were in trouble.

- Go do your homework.

So, you've never seen her before?

You're sure you've never heard of her?

Okay, thank you so much.

Nice speaking to you.

- Hey.

Just picking up my briefcase.

- None of the moms have seen or heard of Samantha.

It's like she just got here.

- Either that or she's a recluse.

- You know, kids' subconscious come out in what they draw.

- It was just a harmless daydream about superheroes.

- He's not honest with us, Reese. - Most boys aren't.

- And you're willing to risk that that is all that this is?

- No.

Come on, you've been at this for hours.

- Yeah, I'm gonna get some rest. You're right.

- Good idea.

(winces)

(baby cries echoing)

So, what are our options?

- I'm sorry. I... I've tried everything. There's--

- Don't tell me there's nothing.

(baby cries) There can't be nothing.

(sighs)

How are you feeling?

- The episodes come and go. I just...

(deep exhale)

I just need to breathe, okay?

- Okay.

I'll notify the police about Samantha in the morning.

- Mm-hmm.

- You're still in recovery.

I think it's best if we let the police handle it

from here on out. - Yeah.

(pensive music)

(gasping)

- What's up? - I'm just, um...

trying to book a... an appointment with Dr. Fields,

but the earliest is like, in two weeks.

- Someone else might be available.

- No, no, she's been there since my first stroke.

(melancholic music)

The migraines are getting worse.

- How's Billy doing?

- Not great. (nervous chuckle)

- I can imagine.

The last stroke was only a few months ago.

- How am I supposed to protect him

when I barely remember who I am?

- All you have to do is be there for him, and you are.

- There's so much missing, I don't even know where to begin.

- No parent knows where to begin.

It's always wishing the decisions you make are the right ones.

- Yeah.

- Why don't we head out this weekend,

you, me, Billy and Reese?

Help take your mind off everything.

We could go to the museum.

The zoo? Oh, the planetarium.

(laughs)

- You wanna spend your birthday weekend

taking Billy and our family to the planetarium?

- Aw, you remembered it's my birthday.

(laughs) And, of course, I would!

You're like family to me.

- Thanks. There's no way I could've survived the bus.

- No sweat! You gotta stand up to Gavin.

- Hey, can you bring the new

Captain Vigilant issue to school tomorrow?

- Definitely! My house is just up the block.

I'll catch you soon, okay? - Okay.

- Bye!

- Leave me alone! (laughs)

- What are you gonna do, loser? - Stop it!

- What are you gonna do, huh? What are you gonna do?

What are you gonna do, huh? What are you gonna do, huh?

Huh? (car honks)

Got your hat, loser!

(sighs)

(ominous music)

- Hey, you okay?

(sighs)

Is he always so mean to you?

- Mom told me not to talk to you.

- She probably thinks I'm a stranger.

We've met before.

- I guess so.

- What did your parents wanna know about me?

- If you worked at the school and what you talk to me about.

- Hurry home, before your mom worries.

You probably have a dog or something waiting for you.

- Can't. Allergic.

- That's too bad.

We're friends, right?

- Hey, honey.

What's wrong?

- I fell and lost my hat.

I tried to avoid Gavin by walking home with Rory.

- Do you want me to walk to

and from school with you from now on?

- That'd be great! - Okay.

Okay.

(light music)

So, I bought you a phone today. (gasps)

But I want you to use it for emergencies.

- I will.

- You know, we've never really talked about my strokes.

Is there anything you wanna ask me?

- Are you gonna get better?

- Oh, honey.

You know, I might not remember everything,

but it does not change the way that I feel about you.

- Is it gonna happen to me?

- No. What happened to me is rare,

and your dad is older than me,

and it hasn't even happened to him,

so I think you'll be okay.

(sighs) Is there anything else you wanna talk to me about?

- No.

I swear. - Okay.

Because you know, if you wanna talk to me

about anything, then you can.

- I know.

- Okay.

Oh, I was gonna ask you, how did you get away from Gavin?

You know what? You tell me when you're ready, okay?

Maybe if we tell him why we're concerned,

he'll stop trusting her.

- Well, couldn't hurt.

Where'd he get the idea to walk home from school?

- He was trying to avoid Gavin, poor thing.

I told him to avoid him,

but maybe you can give him some advice?

- Yeah, happy to.

- How did the police go?

- Ah, I don't know how much help they're gonna.

They said they're gonna investigate,

but they just kept saying how safe the neighbourhood was

and how there hasn't been a child abduction here in years.

- But how are they going to handle it?

- Uh, check security cameras,

cross-reference with suspicious reports in the area.

- Oh! I was meaning to tell you,

I had a memory recently. - Oh!

- About you arguing with Dr. Sanchez.

(curious music)

What were you fighting about?

- Oh, uh...

he was pushing these invasive medical tests

and screenings on Billy. We didn't think he needed them.

- Oh.

- Why, is it important?

- I just wanted to have an idea of what it was about.

- Ah.

(suspicious music)

- So, honey, you know why

it's important to stay away from strangers, right?

- Because you haven't met them.

- Yes, and you don't know their intentions.

In your comic book, there's a shapeshifter, he's called...

- Mmm, uh, Mr. Morpho.

- Well, it's kind of like that.

They alter their appearances so that they can get

close to people and hurt them.

- Samantha wants to hurt me?

(pensive music)

- We don't know, honey.

That's why it's important to stay away from her.

- It would make us feel

a lot more comfortable and less scared.

- So, you're gonna stay away from her, right?

- Yeah.

- Okay.

- You know, bullies like Gavin used to tease me all the time too.

- How'd you stop them?

- Well, bullies are just looking for a reaction.

When they saw that I wasn't willing to be a victim,

they stopped.

If you show Gavin you don't care, he'll leave you alone.

- Has Gavin been violent with Billy before?

- Not from what he told us.

- It's good he didn't walk home alone.

- They've been inseparable since they were four.

It's so cute. (chuckles)

- And the school can't help?

- They said that there's nothing that they can do

if he's off the school grounds.

(scoffs) - What is it with that brat?

- Oh, it's not him. It's his mom.

She has always been jealous of us.

She blames Billy for Gavin not getting on the climbing team.

(scoffs) - Billy had nothing to do with that.

- I know.

You know, I'm gonna visit her

and see if I can convince her

to tell her son to leave my son alone.

- Okay. Tell me when.

I'll be there. - I... I would never ask you to do that.

- You don't have to.

I'm not gonna let you confront that psycho by yourself.

- Okay, I will. - Good!

- We've gotta go back to the office.

I have something to show you. (grunts)

- What?

- I'm not gonna tell you. - What do you mean?

- I'm just not gonna tell you.

I'm sorry. (laughs): What?

- Like, I'm just not.

(sweet music)

(Linda): Why are my eyes closed? (Mallory): Just keep it shut.

- We should be bringing the stuff in. - Wait, are you ready? And...

(all): Surprise!

- Happy birthday!

- This is so sweet!

- This is from my family to you. - Ooh!

Oh! Do you mind if... - No problem.

(chuckles)

- Hannah. - Thank you.

(gasps) - Aw!

- For always being there for us.

- Oh! I love it.

Oh, thank you so much.

I'm gonna put it on.

(squeals)

(♪)

- So, I know you were interested.

- Oh.

- I think this would be really good for you.

- I'll read through it, thanks.

- No problem.

- Oh, that looks beautiful! - Yeah?

(laughs)

- Wait, did you see the photo?

(laughs) - It's so cute.

(indistinct chatter)

- Oh, how old was Billy there?

(Linda): Who are you messaging?

- I'm actually e-mailing the Oregon Medical Board.

Reese's explanation of the argument

with Dr. Sanchez makes sense,

but I just want both sides of the story, you know?

- Right.

(ominous music)

- There's Vanessa.

- Hey! - Just wait.

- Hey, tell your kid

to knock it off with harassing Billy.

- Oh, so, I see your girlfriend's moved on

from slapping people for you?

- We just want your son to stop bullying my son.

- Maybe it's time you stop thinking so much about my boy

and pay more attention to yours,

before something else happens to him.

- Leave my son alone.

(scoffs)

(sighs)

Slapping someone?

(sighs)

I got into a fight with a woman

who was making fun of you

when you were struggling with recovery.

(sighs)

- I don't need you to defend me.

- You've been like a sister to me since you moved into town.

Just wanted to be there for you.

(car beeps)

(indistinct chatter)

- Billy? Honey, have you seen Billy?

(ominous music)

Hi, is Billy at climbing practice?

Okay, thank you.

(school bell rings)

Hey, honey, it's Mom.

Can you give me a call back?

Where are you, baby?

(shuddering breath)

(outgoing ringtone)

(phone rings)

- Hey.

- Billy didn't show up at the climbing gym.

- Uh... it's okay.

You've... you've tried calling him?

- I, I, I did, but he isn't picking up.

His phone said he was at school an hour ago,

but nothing since then.

- Well, maybe his battery died or...

- Did he say he was going

to a friend's house or his...

- Not to me. Have you checked the cameras?

See if he's at home?

- I did. I checked the cameras, but the signal is poor.

- I'm not getting anything here either.

- Do you think that Samantha took him?

- Uh, let's not jump to conclusions, though.

- I... confronted Vanessa,

and she threatened him.

- Why would you do that?

(tense music)

You could've gotten hurt.

I should've been there.

- No.

We have to call the police.

- I'll call them.

I'm gonna leave and look for him right now.

- Okay, I'm gonna go home, see if he shows up there,

and call other parents to see if he turns up at their house, okay?

- Tell me if you hear anything.

- You too.

(sighs)

Billy? Where are you, honey?

Hi, Hannah, it's... it's, uh, Mallory.

Have you seen Billy by any chance?

And, and what about Rory, has he seen him?

Can you check? Okay.

Okay, um, and you're sure he hasn't seen him?

Thank you.

Bye.

- Billy!

Billy!

(phone rings)

Ugh.

Hey. - Hi.

Um, none of the parents have seen him.

- I... I can't find him anywhere.

- And what about the police?

- I don't know. The police are doing everything they can.

- Where is he?!

- Wait a minute, wait, it's not where he's going,

it's where he's... been.

I think I know where he is.

Hang on, I'll call you back.

- Okay.

Let me know.

(ominous music)

(music brightens)

- Hey, Dad. - Hey, buddy!

Why aren't you answering your phone?

Oh, battery died, huh?

- Am I in trouble?

- Only a little.

Come on, let's get outta here.

(sentimental music)

(door lock clicks)

- Oh!

What were you thinking,

going to the park and not telling us?

- I wanted to read a comic that just came out today.

- What did we talk about yesterday?

- To stay away from Samantha.

- And to be careful. - I was careful.

- Billy, leaving school without telling us isn't careful.

- I'm sorry.

- Do you know how worried we were about you?

- We thought something happened to you.

- I thought I'd be back on time.

- And then, you would be lying and covering it up,

and you know that that's wrong.

- Am I grounded? - Yes.

Yes, you most definitely are grounded.

Why didn't you answer your phone?

- His battery died.

Probably all that gaming.

I'll pick up a portable charger tonight.

- Listen to me, use your phone only for emergencies, okay?

- Promise.

- You know, you don't have to be on the climbing team

if you don't want to, bud.

- I do! Other kids skip.

- You're not other kids.

- I know. Can I go to my room now?

- Yes, go ahead.

- It was one time. It hasn't happened before.

I think he knows better now.

- You think or you hope?

(both sigh)

(worried music)

- Still worked up over today?

- Aren't you?

- Well, Billy's safe.

Samantha didn't take him.

- You don't know that she couldn't have.

(sighs) Just...

just have faith.

- How?

- When Billy was born,

you were worried sick something was gonna happen.

It was... a delayed delivery.

The doctor wasn't sure he was gonna make it.

You stayed up every night with him to make sure.

I can't even count the number of scares we've had

over Billy losing his inhaler. (chuckles)

I mean, look at your last two strokes.

Each time you lost memories

and you were worried that they were never gonna come back.

But they always did.

All it took was time.

Things have been hard before.

But we'll make it through.

We always do. (chuckles)

(emotional music)

(Mallory): So, I arranged for a school guidance counsellor

to see if it would help with Billy.

- I saw you go into mommy mode

when Billy was in trouble before.

- You did? - Mm-hmm.

Uh, we were at an indoor playground,

Billy lost his inhaler in a ball pit.

- And what was I doing? (chuckles)

- Okay, so we crawled in, with kids jumping all around us.

You never gave up, and eventually, we found it.

That is when I decided to put the inhaler on a necklace.

- You made that?

- Yeah! It's not that different

from making jewelry.

I saw some kids wearing them online and I figured, why not?

- Well, I appreciate it. Thank you.

- Welcome.

(mug shatters loudly) (gasps)

(dramatic whoosh)

(suspenseful music)

(pills rattling)

I have not seen you this bad since the stroke.

You okay?

- Yep.

Did Reese and I have problems in our marriage?

- What?

What kind? - I just...

I remember this argument that we had.

- No, not that I know of.

You two have always had a healthy marriage.

If there were financial issues or another woman,

you would've told me.

- Was I seeing someone?

- No! All couples argue.

It could've been about... chores or how to raise Billy.

I'm sure whatever it was, it must not have been a big deal.

Okay?

- Mm-hmm.

(concerning music)

What's wrong?

- Do you have any guesses as to why someone at work knew about

Billy going missing the other day?

- I called a lot of parents when he went missing.

- He knew where I found him. At the park.

- Well, I told Linda, but she wouldn't gossip about it.

- Well, who else would've?

- Our son was missing

and you're concerned about keeping up appearances?

- Well, it's not what I meant.

- What did you mean?

(sighs)

- I'm sorry.

It's been a long day. I didn't expect to be

cornered about Billy at work.

- Do you recall the argument we had

when you left an apology note?

What was that about?

- I was spending a lot of time at the office

and you were angry, rightfully, that I wasn't home more.

- Why weren't you?

- I was just so focused on

earning as much as I could to support us,

I lost track of why I was doing it in the first place.

And you had your most recent stroke, and...

I realized how wrong I was.

(suspicious music)

You and Billy are my world.

I don't know what I'd do if I lost you.

- What's the progress with the police report?

- Hmm, well, they're doing what they can with minimal evidence.

- Well, Billy is staying at Rory's tonight,

so I'm gonna go into his room

and see if we're missing something.

- It's a good idea.

It'd be helpful.

(melancholic music)

(dramatic boom)

(tense music)

- He would have been Billy's age.

That's only a couple of hours away.

(mysterious music)

- Hi!

- Hi.

Does Amy live here?

I'm house-sitting for her.

- Oh.

Do you know when she'll be back?

- Unfortunately, I don't.

Is there anything I can help you with?

- A woman is targeting my son

and she gave him a toy with David's name on it,

and I was just hoping that Amy would have

some information that could help.

- I can't promise I'll be much help, but do you wanna come in?

- Yeah, thank you.

- Yeah.

Amy was never the same after it happened.

- I will keep my eyes out.

- Do you have a picture of your son?

- Yes. Um...

Here you go.

- He looks like such a sweetheart.

- He is. (chuckles)

- Do you mind if I send this to myself to give to Amy

in case she hears anything?

- No, go ahead. Anything helps.

(ominous music)

Who... who is this?

- Oh, that's Samantha.

She's one of Amy's best friends.

- And uh... does she live around here?

- Not anymore. She relocated for work.

- Huh. And where is Amy now?

- In Oregon. She found a new lead on

finding her son and his abductors.

- And do they have any more information or...?

- I hope it turns out different this time.

- Excuse me?

- It wouldn't be the first time she's been wrong.

The police won't help her anymore,

so she's taken matters into her own hands.

- I have to go get my son, Billy.

Uh, he's... um, he's at school,

and I'm going to be late, so...

Uh, just to be back in time, I have to...

- Don't forget your phone. - Yes, thank you, so, so much.

(gasps) Hey, honey.

So... so, how was your meeting with your guidance counsellor?

What'd you guys talk about?

- Are you still upset about being grounded, honey?

You know it's because we love you

and we care about you, right?

How was Gavin today?

- He kept calling me names,

but I filmed it on my phone and showed it to the principal.

- And what happened?

- He got detention. - He did?

Come on.

(mysterious music)

Come on. Inside.

There you go.

(whispers): Have you ever heard of Amy Mable?

(phone chimes)

- What if Amy is targeting Billy

because she thinks he's her son?

- Hmm, do they look alike?

- I don't think so!

Keisha said she didn't even see the resemblance.

- Why would Amy? - I don't know.

Keisha said that Amy moved to Oregon

because she had some sort of lead on David.

- Did Keisha tell you if Amy and Samantha are still friends?

- All I know is that she said that Samantha moved.

- Well, maybe she came here looking for Samantha.

Maybe Samantha abducted David.

- Why would Samantha abduct David?

- I don't know.

You didn't ask anything else? - No.

I didn't feel safe being there.

- I think the best thing that we can do is to wait

to hear from Amy about Billy's photo and keep our focus on Samantha.

This news about David should at least speed up

the police investigation.

- And if Amy goes after Billy?

- Then we'll be prepared.

I think we should keep this

between ourselves and the police.

- And Linda, right? Because she's family.

(tense music)

- Just be careful.

- My gut says that something's off.

What if we're not the first people she's done this to?

- From what Keisha said,

it sounds like it's happened before.

- Reese says that I'm jumping to conclusions.

- Better safe than sorry.

Have you searched for Amy or Samantha on social media?

- They don't have any accounts.

- I'll see what I can dig up.

There's no way they can hide forever.

- Oh!

Oh, my God... - Are you all right?

- Yeah.

- I'll find them.

- Just don't do anything reckless, okay?

- I won't! - Oh!

(ominous music)

(dramatic whoosh)

Hey!

- Hey.

- How was work?

- Uh, meeting ended sooner than expected.

What are you up to?

- Oh, I'm just going through some stuff to see

if I can jog a memory.

- Hmm. Any luck?

- No.

How am I supposed to protect our son

when I don't have all my memories?

I barely remember being his mom.

- Well, you're here for him now.

You know, I could point things out

that used to be of importance. - No, no, it's fine.

I'll um... I, I have to do this by myself.

But thank you.

- Whatever helps.

(tense music)

(outgoing ringtone)

- Hi, it's Mallory. Leave your message at the tone

and I'll get back to you. (beep)

- Mallory, it's me.

Call me when you get this.

I found Samantha's last name. It's Zumwalt.

Now, we can know who she is.

(phone chimes)

(sinister music)

(loud crash)

(gasps)

(shaky breathing)

(breathing heavily)

(skateboard rumbles)

(deep exhale)

Skaters? Seriously?

(sighs)

(phone chimes)

(dramatic boom)

(shrieks)

Help me!

(phone chimes)

(voicemail): First new message.

(Vanessa): Mallory, it's me. Call me when you get this.

I found Samantha's last name. It's Zumwalt.

Now, we can know who she is.

- Morning, Mom.

- Good morning, little rabbit.

How are your pancakes?

- They're great. (chuckles)

- One order of flapjacks for Mrs. Brooks.

- Thank you.

- You slept late. (sighing): Yeah.

I just got a voicemail from Linda.

- Oh, what's she saying?

- That she knows Samantha's last name.

It's Zumwalt.

- Wow! That's...

that's great. Progress.

But how'd she figure that out?

- That's all she said.

- You call her back?

- I did, but she's not answering.

She's probably on her way to the office.

- Let me know as soon as you hear anything else.

I'll let the police know.

(ominous music)

(shrieks)

Linda!

No! Oh, no! No!

(sobbing): No, no, no!

(police siren wailing)

(somber music)

- Are you the woman who called in regarding

finding a dead body? - Mm-hmm.

- What's your name?

- Mallory Brooks.

- Can I see some ID?

Your relation to the victim?

- She was my business partner and my best friend.

I think Samantha killed her.

- Samantha?

- Samantha Zumwalt.

She was targeting my son

and Linda was doing research on her before...

before she um...

before she died.

(crying)

- I'm assuming you've reported all of this to the police?

- My husband did, yes.

- Stay here.

(sighs)

(sad music) (indistinct chatter)

- You said your husband filed the report with the police?

- Yes, he did.

- Well, the precinct has nothing on file from him.

(dramatic boom) - Wait...

we have a copy of it.

- Well, we need to see it for verification.

Is there any reason why your husband would lie to you?

- No. Why?

- Do you know where he is,

so I can send some officers over there to question him?

(anxious music)

(sighs)

(beeps)

(keyboard clacking)

(whispering): It's from a couple months ago...

(outgoing ringtone)

(Amy): Hi, leave a message after the beep.

(beep) (small gasp)

(phone chimes)

(dramatic booms)

(door opens)

(door closes)

(ominous music)

- Billy's doing his homework.

You showed me a copy of the report.

- I can explain.

I found a copy of the form online.

I... changed my handwriting and filled it out.

- Is there any truth in what you've been telling me?

- Of course!

- Linda's dead, Reese,

and if you just went to the police, then--

- I didn't wanna waste time with the police and their red tape.

I was doing my own investigation.

- Then why... wouldn't you...

file a report with them?

- It's hearsay.

Even if I did, there's nothing they could've done.

- And when Billy went missing?

- Well, filing a false report is a crime.

I didn't wanna do anything before I was totally certain.

- That doesn't explain why you lied to me.

- If I told you I was going after Samantha on my own,

you'd... be up half the night worrying about me.

I never meant for any of this to... happen.

(tense music)

- Did the police come by your office?

- I told them everything.

You can check if you like.

I'm so sorry.

(indistinct chatter on TV)

- Vroom.

Vroom. Vroom.

Vroom.

(phone chimes)

Vroom, vroom.

Vroom, vroom.

(phone keyboard clacking)

(phone chimes)

(phone buzzes)

- Who's that?

- Just a client from work. I'll deal with it later.

(♪)

(gloomy music)

Amy?

(gun cocks) (gasps)

- Don't move or scream for help.

(tense music)

Is Reese with you?

- He doesn't know I came.

- Get in the car.

(breathes nervously)

Why did you ignore my messages?

- I didn't see them, okay? I promise.

My phone broke and Reese updated it

and gave me a new number because there was so much spam, okay?

- Samantha didn't kidnap my son.

You and Reese did.

(dramatic boom)

- I have videos after I gave birth to my son, okay?

And if you really believed that,

why didn't you go to the police?

Unless... they wouldn't help you because you've done this before.

- How confident are you that

the boy living in your house is the same one you gave birth to?

- Billy and David don't even look alike.

- Imagine Billy with freckles and the same haircut as David.

- Listen to me, okay?

The... the person that took your son...

- Is Samantha?

(scoffs)

She's my friend.

I sent her to find out if Billy was really my son.

- How do you know that you can even trust her?

- Because she has never lied to me.

Can you say the same for Reese?

David has asthma, the... the same allergies as Billy.

- Most kids do.

(sharp sigh)

Why... didn't you come before?

- I didn't know what Reese would do when he found out.

You know he killed Linda.

(dramatic boom)

(scoffing): No. - I suppose he already has you

blaming Samantha.

- No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Reese is not a violent person.

- You went to the hospital for a concussion.

- Because... I had a stroke and I fell.

- Are you positive that that's what actually happened?

- Listen, you must be crazy

to think that I would give my son to a complete stranger.

- I don't expect you to.

I'm gonna give you one chance.

Ask Reese about David by tomorrow.

You'll see that I'm right.

And I'll be watching to make sure that you do.

- And what if I still don't believe you?

- You will.

And if you still won't do the right thing,

just know that I will do anything

to get my son back.

(dramatic music)

Now, go.

Confront your husband.

(breathes heavily)

(curious music)

(phone chimes)

- Finally, the Oregon Medical Board.

"We regret to inform you that Dr. Sanchez...

died years ago in a car accident.

If there's any way we can be of further assistance, please let us know."

(dramatic music)

(melancholic music)

Hey.

How is your math work coming along?

- Okay.

Is everything okay?

- How much do you have left?

- Not a lot.

- Why don't you go to Rory's house tonight?

(gasps) - Yes!

(chuckles) - Just finish up

and I'll take you later, okay?

I'll pick you up tomorrow, okay?

And don't leave with anyone.

- I won't. Love you, Mom.

- Love you, little rabbit.

(knocks on door)

- Oh, hi. - Hey.

- Hi, you guys! Come on in!

Hey. - Hi.

- Um, we're hosting a drive-in on Friday.

In case your family wants to come.

How is it at home?

- If I don't call you tomorrow,

can you call the police, please?

- What? Why? What's wrong?

- It's what I'm gonna find out.

I promise I'll tell you everything,

but I have to go right now.

Please, you're the only person that I can rely on.

And just... think what you would do if it was Rory.

- Um... yeah.

Yeah, Billy can stay.

- Okay. Thank you.

- You be safe.

- Yeah.

(ominous music)

- Hey!

- How was work?

- Oh, the usual.

Left early again today.

- Where's Billy?

- Doing homework. - Oh.

What'd you get up to?

- Just odds and ends for work.

- You know, I...

I know it's early, but...

you should really look at getting somebody

to help you out with the business.

Still haven't forgiven me, huh?

- What happened to the son that I gave birth to?

(ominous music)

- Kids grow up.

Billy acting out is just a phase.

- No.

I found my old phone in the garage.

- Ah, I've been looking everywhere for that.

- Amy said she's been trying to call me for months.

- But I thought it was broken.

- The SIM isn't.

So, I called her and...

I met with her last night.

(mug clunks on counter)

- What did she have to say?

- She says she doesn't think Samantha took David.

She thinks we did.

- Amy lost her son.

Then fell under Samantha's persuasion.

- They're friends. - And you believe her?

- It's not like you've been honest with me lately.

- I've been trying to protect

everything that we've worked so long and hard to build up.

- You can't replace people, Reese.

- Is that what you think I did?

- Tell me something that makes sense!

Tell me something right now because Amy said that

you were lying to me before my last stroke.

You... you lied about going to the police!

- She's probably been planning this for months!

- Tell me the truth

or I am going to the police. (phone beeps)

And I'm gonna tell them everything that I know!

- Billy is not really here.

Is he?

(dramatic boom)

(breathes shakily)

- Ah!

- You don't know when to quit!

(pan thuds) (shouts)

(grunts and coughs)

(pained grunts)

(phone beeps)

(creepy music)

(operator): 911, what's your emergency?

- Drop it.

Kick it my way.

(breathes nervously)

You're safe.

I don't wanna hurt you.

You just don't understand what you're doing.

- I'm not gonna stop calling the police until you tell me the truth.

- You want the truth?

We did it.

- No. - We kidnapped David.

- Why?

- Because our son died

and you couldn't cope.

It was your idea to take him!

I just went along with it because it's what you wanted.

(sobbing)

- And then, you had your first stroke five years ago and...

you couldn't remember anything.

You couldn't remember Billy dying and I thought...

that I could just take this on for the both of us.

- Did I really get a stroke by falling down the stairs?

- Of course!

You slipped on Billy's toys.

I only want what's best for our family.

- And what about Linda?

(tense music)

- No, you dragged her into this!

I didn't wanna kill her,

but you-- - No! No!

- She was gonna catch on!

- And what about Dr. Sanchez? Did you hurt Dr. Sanchez?!

Please tell me you didn't hurt him!

- He was the only other person who knew that Billy died!

(sobbing)

I cut the brakes on his car

to give us a fresh start!

Now, we don't have to worry about the past!

- We have to turn ourselves in, Reese, please.

We have to turn...

- You wanna throw it all away.

I'm trying to help you!

- David isn't our son!

(grunting and panting)

(vase crashes)

- Ah!

(panting)

(curious music)

We need to give David back.

He's not ours. It's the right thing to do.

- He's been ours for five years.

- Reese, you stole him without telling me,

and then, you threatened me into staying silent.

The only reason I know is because Amy told me!

- We're a family!

- No, what we have isn't real.

- You need to listen to me.

- Ah!

(tumbling down)

I didn't get the last stroke

by slipping on Billy's toys. - You did.

- I got it because you caused all my strokes by hurting me,

so that I wouldn't turn us in and tell the truth!

- You need to stop fighting me!

(grunts) - Let me go!

(screams)

(panting)

- You won't.

- I don't want to.

(grave music)

- You won't.

- I don't want to.

- You won't. - I don't want to!

(gunshot)

(sobbing)

(screams)

(sobs)

(police sirens wailing in distance)

- We came as soon as we got the call.

Are you okay?

(indistinct police radio chatter)

- Yes.

- Everything's gonna be okay.

(somber music)

- Do I have to go?

- Yeah, honey.

- But you're my mom.

- I... was your mom.

- Did I do something wrong?

- No, honey, this has... nothing

to do with you, okay?

- Then why?

- Do you remember when you were young

and you used to take toys that didn't belong to you?

Well, Reese saw you

and we wanted you so badly.

Even though you didn't belong to us.

- He stole me?

- It's complicated.

But what do we do with the toys that aren't ours?

- Give them back.

- Yeah, we give them back.

Yeah, because it's the right thing to do, right?

- Will Dad be here?

- He's going away for a while.

- How long?

- A long time, honey.

- Will I ever see you?

- Yeah.

You're not losing me, okay?

It's just... we won't see each other as often as we used to.

- I love you, Mom.

- Oh, I love you so much, little rabbit.

Come here.

(sentimental music)

David's inside getting his things.

- Thank you.

- I wanted to say that I'm sorry.

And um...

thank you for... standing up to the judge for me.

- You lost your son.

And Reese manipulated you.

I mean, you helped me get my son back.

And I um...

I think you should stay in his life.

- Thank you.

- David.

(sobs)

I'll um...

I'll give you a moment.

(bittersweet music)

- This isn't goodbye, okay?

- Okay.

- I'll see you again.

- I love you, Mom.

- Come here.

(sniffles)

(sighs)

- You ready? - Yeah.

- Wanna get some ice cream? (chuckles)

Do you want ice cream?

(cries quietly)

Here we go!

(♪)

- Thank you for letting me watch him climb.

I appreciate it.

- I'm glad you could be here.

David's been waiting all week.

(chuckles)

Is your husband gonna be joining us?

- Yes, Conrad's on his way.

- Hi.

(bright music)
