Original subtitles

After he was beaten, tortured, and scarred, Charlie Luciano realized he

could no longer stay out of the war between Masseria and Marzano.

He put into effect a dangerous, daring, and possibly deadly plan.

It would take many months, but if it worked, it

would give him almost total power in New York City.

It included sending Michael Lasker to Cuba and risking

the life of his other friend from childhood, Ben Siegel.

And he was the

only one who knew.

Besides Charlie and Masseria.

Look

and I tell you, we all come out on the Short End, right?

We all got plenty to lose.

The Brooklyn Ducks... they're going to belong to Maranzano.

Not on his stays here.

Adonis, you got a piece of Manhattan?

Kiss it goodbye.

What do you want, Vito?

It's what Charlie wants.

And he wants Bugsy Siegel.

Mr. Luciano for reardon.

I'm sorry about this Mr. Luciano orders.

Do you want us to wait for you?

Alright, we'll find our way out.

Go see what Mommy's doing.

Go away, aye?

Easy.

Let's go Bugsy.

Baby's downstairs.

Come on.

You wanted to be picked up and brought in here so everybody would know where you are.

That's your business.

I'm not even going to ask what you got in mind.

And now, I'd like you to listen to my problem.

What do you say it's true?

This quest of a racing war.

You guys want to shoot up the rest of the country.

The citizens are there.

Don't buy my groceries.

You start using the city of New York for a full-time

shooting gallery and we get complaints from the taxpayers.

That hurts, Charlie.

In here.

Personality's aside, lucky.

Sooner or later somebody's going to tell me to put a lump on your head.

Big as you are.

I'll have to do it.

So put a little ice on it, will you, Charlie?

Cool it down.

How am I supposed to do that?

I haven't got a clue.

If anybody wants to know, I brought you in here to ask you.

Have you got any idea who might have killed Peter Morello?

Peter Morello.

Peter Morello.

The way I figure it.

His mother's own was much.

Yeah, that's a thought.

Thank you very much.

Stay lucky, Charlie.

In Cuba, Michael Lasker not only bought molasses to make illegal liquor.

He laid plans for a gambling empire with an ambitious sergeant, Batista,

who would someday rule Cuba.

Will they rule Cuba?

The sergeants will rule Cuba.

Mr. Lasker.

I think we can help each other.

Tell me.

Your country's very beautiful.

It's close to the United States.

Only of Americans could be coming here, spending their money in Cuba.

They count for their women.

I was thinking about gambling.

Casinos.

The biggest, best.

I was thinking about the Cuban children, Mr. Lasker.

The Casinos would pay taxes.

Who's Casinos?

I was yours and mine.

Sergeant Batista.

I'm your friend.

Luciano?

This doesn't involve Luciano.

The Casinos would belong to us.

Perhaps.

When the butcher is gone.

What do you need?

Money?

Guns?

We have guns, Mr. Lasker.

We'll speak again soon.

I'll tell you the next time.

Adios.

Before the execution of his plan, Charlie confided in his oldest friend, Mr. Goodman.

It's a little bit.

It's a little bit.

You like it?

It's the only thing about the old country I like.

I got your case.

Terrific.

You once told me I was your oldest friend in America.

You had friends in Sicily?

It's a village.

Look at our 3D.

They might suffer there.

That's all I remember.

You see our old friends from the old neighborhood?

Ben, Siegel?

We're still looking for them.

Where?

They'll drag the river for the right piece of cement.

Everybody dies of some.

You see, Michael?

We have different interests.

Different interests, different friends.

Thanks for the new hand.

And you?

Do you ever see Charlie lose the ano anymore?

I'll send the slip of it to him.

Two graves, Charlie.

Two graves for revenge.

This war you're fighting with, Maranzano.

I was in the hospital.

I said there, I know what he did to you.

But when you sleep so much better than he's in his grave...

It wasn't Maranzano.

What?

It was Masaria.

Masaria?

It's the same brain of his.

Make it look like it was Maranzano who sliced me up to drive me into his arms.

That's where I went.

To Joe the boss.

That's where I am.

He trusts me.

He trusts me, Mr. Goodman.

I find his wars for him.

I kill my friends for him.

So he trusts me.

That's what I want.

That's all I want.

What have you done to yourselves, Charlie?

I make myself what I have to be.

Who else knows this?

You do.

So we both live with it.

I'm sorry if that hurts you.

It'll be finished soon enough.

That's a promise.

You're up early.

Sleep.

Breakfast?

I'm going to see Michael.

Is he back?

This morning.

Ruthie!

Ruth!

My God!

D.V.

My God!

Was it a good trip?

It was a good trip.

Will it change things?

I think so.

Maybe a lot of things.

We won't know for a while though.

Michael.

You feel a roof?

How do you know it's a hymn?

You wanted a son to say hymn.

Welcome home, Michael.

Hello, Ruthie.

I'm sorry to interrupt you, especially now.

But I have to talk to Michael.

So soon.

It's alright.

We'll have the day together.

We'll take the hold.

So.

Cube OK?

Sure.

It's fine.

The baby.

What is it, Charlie?

Come here.

How about you spend the day with Ruthie?

Don't stay in the house.

Why don't you go to some place where there's a lot of people.

Let them see you.

What happened to Benny?

It's time we had to talk.

Look.

Come into the dining room, will you?

He's gone, Ruthie.

I thought you were finished with that.

There were some things I didn't understand.

I don't understand either, Michael.

There'll be a time you'll understand everything.

The plans I've been making.

With Charlie?

No, this is different.

We'll have a different life.

Thank you.

I'll tell you about it.

First we'll go shopping.

We'll buy you a new car.

It's for the baby.

No more bumps.

Everything's smooth as class.

I'm hungry.

Three days, Joe.

I'll have some more.

I don't need you, boy.

I don't want to take care of me.

Don't you hear, boss?

No, I'll come back at the office.

Say, say, say.

Hey, Naka, come on, sir.

Hey, will your man try to parlade him forever, eh?

Excuse me.

I told you to go to the bar, eh?

I'm gonna be in it.

Three days, Joe.

And three days, we throw a hundred guns at Maranzano's house.

That's your good.

And three more a day.

You prove it to me you're true, friend of Charlie.

I owe you.

I'm gonna pay.

I'll never forget you, break your friendship.

What am I gonna ask you for me?

You make your revenge on a boxy seagull for me.

You're never a great fool with you.

I won't.

The other one has given me what I really want.

I'm grateful to you.

Three more a day.

One of Maranzano's dead.

You test the revenge on your mouth like woodwind.

Sweet.

Four men had beaten, tortured, and scarred Charlie Luciano.

In

1931, Charlie took his revenge on all four.

Luciano's verdict, death by execution.

You come a long, long way from a time ago in jail.

Remember?

You mean the day I thought you weren't trouble with the police?

Well, we're both to put our trouble in the past, eh?

Come on, Charlie.

You work it too hard.

I'll tell you what, but let's replace them a card.

No.

I got a lot to do, Joe.

Oh, come on.

One hour not gonna kill you.

I'm not too much alone.

I mean, we eat, drink a glass of wine, eh?

I play cards.

What else you work for, eh?

Look, I make a surprise for you.

I bring a peanut butter deck.

What, no bricks today?

No, but today we play your game.

You'll win, maybe.

Come on.

One hour not gonna hurt you.

Put up your money.

Oh, my gosh.

What is this mess?

Look lucky.

What are you worried about?

You're so formal.

Look like I wet my pants.

So I'll be right back, huh?

I gotta go clean this up.

No cheating while I'm done.

Nah, I don't cheat, Joe.

Hello, operator.

Give me the police.

It's an emergency.

This is Charlie Luciano.

I'm at a restaurant in Coney Island in the Nova Villa, tomorrow.

Yes, somebody just killed Joe Marzano here.

I don't know, I was in the washroom when it happened.

Luciano finally had achieved a massive revenge.

He had ordered the death of Joe Marzano and the deaths of four men who had

tortured and scarred Charlie at Marzano's bloody command.

He would face Salvatore Marzano as an equal, with power that was to grow and

finally overwhelm almost all who stood against him.

Evening, Mr. Lasker.

Eagan, right?

Three children.

Got four now.

Got any kids yet, Mr. Lasker?

One on the way.

Good luck.

Thanks.

You bring me back any maracas?

Joe Marzano is dead.

Oh, he's dead.

Is that what the newspapers mean?

I thought that's what I meant when I read it in the papers.

Nobody's in the mood for jokes.

No?

That right.

I thought you guys were real jokers the way you

played off like Charlie killed your friend Siegel.

Jonah Boss is dead.

Tell Marzano this comes from Charlie.

Charlie held back the troops.

He made it easy on your bunch.

The war's over now.

It's finished, Tommy.

No more guns.

You tell him.

If he as much as touches a hair on the head of one of our enemies.

We'll fight him to the last sort.

Tell him the quid while he's ahead.

Do I tell Marzano an order from Charlie?

It's a suggestion from Charlie.

And you.

And me.

But no maracas from Cuba.

How's it going, Charlie?

Hey, Mikey.

I got the valve went through that.

Tell me that recipe.

Talk to Tommy, look at anything?

We saw him.

How did he take it?

He mounted off it first.

He'll carry the mail to Marzano.

Good.

Either you got him or he's got you.

I'm driving here and blow our brains out.

Boy, am I glad you guys are working late.

He's overheating on me.

Can you help?

Let's take a look.

What's going on?

Well, I'm sure trying to.

Okay, it's a loose radiator at a host plant.

Let's help get you home.

Thanks, Charlie.

Want to hand me that water back there?

Sure.

Thank you.

Something like that, huh?

Yeah.

You know, you're missing your captain.

Yeah, I lost that yesterday.

Yeah.

Hey, you know, I'll be honest with you.

Driving around this late, all alone.

The way these neighborhoods have got, you know, ropes, gangsters.

You never know what you're going to run into around here.

I know, you know, you'll never do.

Well, listen, I appreciate your help.

How much for all you?

Two bits.

Oh, hey, come on.

Listen, is that too much?

No, 35 cents, really.

I appreciate your help, guys.

Sure.

Good night.

Look out for gangsters.

You better believe it.

Better stay off the streets.

Yeah.

Good night.

Hey, boys.

Who's that?

Looks like a gangster to me.

You look like a gangster to me?

He looks like a gangster to me.

I bet he is.

Could be Bugsy Seal, killing you for a quarter.

Make it a dime.

You coming or going, Benny?

I got a date.

With your wife?

Nah, that was my wife.

Oh, Stella don't care.

She's got her hands full with the baby.

You're a real prince, Benny.

What's the matter, hurt you?

Okay.

It's your business.

You know, Charlie don't understand.

You can get people to do this kind of work.

You don't understand, Benny.

You got no respect for machinery.

No.

Listen, what about Maranzano?

He called a few minutes before you got here.

What's the meeting tomorrow?

I want the two of you there.

I thought Mr. Maranzano didn't like Jews.

No.

We'll see if we can teach Mr. Maranzano a lesson.

Met with Salvatore Maranzano as scheduled.

Charlie, who had inherited the gang of Joe the boss,

Masseria, hoped to use his strength to stop the war.

But he could not bring peace.

Charlie knew that it was either his life or Maranzano's.

Okay, Charlie.

Benvenuto.

An auspicious day, Charlie.

A day for a fruitful meeting, eh?

My friends.

Drank Castell.

Hello, Charlie.

Joe Proface, Tommy Galiano.

Michael Lasker.

And Ben Siegel.

I am pleased.

How do you do?

Well, we are all friends here.

Perhaps my friends can buy your friends a drink while we talk, Charlie.

Michael talks with me.

I'm thirsty, Charlie.

I'll, uh... I'll take that drink.

Your friend is a sensible man.

I said the war's over.

What's all the artillery for?

You also go with protection, Charlie.

Nothing is finished.

Until you and I say it's finished.

Now, you are the successor to Joe Masseria.

Tell me your terms.

The killing stops.

And?

I keep what I had with Michael and Ben.

Mm-hmm.

You ask too much.

That's bad.

That's bad.

Hear me out, Charlie.

I rule as boss of all the bosses.

God alone makes the best world.

We fought as enemies, but we made this victory together.

Now you ask, I give you up.

No.

Mm-hmm.

No, Charlie.

Once I made offer to you.

Everything you have in part of what I have.

After that, you stand first by my side.

Last time we met.

You said to me, Charlie.

If you're gonna ride the carousel, ride the white horse.

I work for nobody.

You work for no man, huh?

Then work for what you respect.

Together.

We break the guns.

Together.

We make the power to stop the killing.

We make a quiet world, Charlie.

We handle our business in peace.

Nobody bothers us.

We sleep.

The sleep of the just.

Only two men have the power to do this.

You and me.

You and me.

And my friends?

The last gonna seal out of your affair.

They stand with you.

I'm not opposed to this.

They have no meaning in my life.

So, do we break the guns, Charlie?

Then all I want is a little piece of territory next to his own.

A little bit of it.

A little piece of that.

All the way back to China.

He's got the Sicilian sewn up, Mikey.

You can count me on the line, Charlie.

I'll go whatever way you want.

But it ain't also saying I can't.

Many calls got his own set-up, so as waxy-goatin and long as well.

That's right.

And that nutty, Dutch silk, he's gonna be coming on strong.

We can live with all that.

How long do you think Maram's on is gonna live with him?

I don't know.

He's upstairs!

You

got a problem, Dutch.

I got no problem.

She got a problem.

Tonight's class of girl you run here.

I closed my eyes for ten seconds.

She hooked my wallet.

You mean this wallet?

The one you left at the bar?

No kidding.

Okay, folks, it's just a misunderstanding.

Nothing to worry about.

Charlie, get something to clean this up.

Harry, lighten it up.

So what are you looking at?

The jumps on me, okay?

Come on.

Here.

Get out of here!

I know you.

Chris.

Chris Brennan, yeah?

Okay.

But Charlie will see you on him.

Good, Charlie.

Going up the stairs the night the roasting got cropped.

I'm Dutch Schultz.

Flagging her, am I right?

Flagging her, right?

You're a mum.

Mm-hmm.

How long you been back in town?

Couple of days.

How long you gonna be around?

Not very long.

Well, before you leave, you might have sleep on a lot of fasts again.

I'd like to try a real man for a chance.

Mm.

Blue door.

I'll go get ready.

He as

much as touches me again.

I'll kill him.

Listen, I can handle you.

I can't handle Schultz.

I think you ought to get out of here.

I think you ought to take a trip.

I think you ought to go back to Chicago.

Good.

Yeah.

We'll get started.

The way he said it, he was threatening you, Charlie.

Me, us.

What else did Dutch say?

Nothing.

Nothing more about Capone.

Oh, I had that gun in my pocket, Charlie.

I should have gone back to him.

Put my arms around him.

Oh, I should have used it, Charlie.

No.

You did everything just right.

I don't want you going back to Chicago, though.

Oh, where should I go then?

I'm going to talk to Michael.

He's got some hotels in Miami.

Find a place for you there.

All right?

Thank you.

Well, I hope I'm intruding.

An old friend.

Where you met?

When you were in the hospital.

We're old friends, too.

I see.

Well, I have a business meeting.

Nothing personal.

Too bad.

We're going to have fun.

Can I drop you someplace, Chris?

No.

I don't think I like this idea.

Who cares what you like?

I think you better leave.

You never could stand inside of blood.

Yeah, well, try not to get it on my rug.

Would you care for a drink?

I think I'd care for a drink.

I think I'd like to get drunk.

What in the hell, Lord?

Why are they helping me?

To Charlie.

To us.

That's nice.

Well, yeah, I like it.

It's nice.

Oh, thank you.

Yeah, it's cute.

Is there anything you need?

Nothing.

What will it mean, this meeting?

Well, it will mean that I'm a man of importance.

You're important to me, Vito.

Teal Ross.

Jun is here, and if you want anything, I should get it for you.

Yeah.

Will you be late?

I don't know.

There has been an understanding that you see what is sick, friend?

He understands.

What?

I'll take you home tonight.

All right.

You come tomorrow, do you know?

Maybe my mother should come tomorrow.

Chivignana?

Ciao.

Carpool, the tutti copy.

Captain of Captain's boss.

Of all bosses.

Satch is the burden that rests here like the lightest of laurels.

I am in the company of honorable and forceful men.

From the Roman Seneca, we learn that a great fortune is a great servitude.

Our honored society has been shown a great fortune.

Our duty now is to act and...

Charlie Luciano would now be named the right hand of Salvatore Maranzano.

He had become the second most powerful figure in the history of organized crime.

Even as Maranzano had become the boss of bosses.

But the fact that neither Michael Lasker or Ben Siegel was at the gangland conclave.

..

...races a loaded question.

Had Charlie sacrificed his friends from childhood...

...to win new preeminence in the mafia?

Or was it part of yet another master plan?

One more evidence of Luciano's criminal genius.

All those who know well... ...out to obey... ...will know also how to rule.

You!

Hi, this is Bill Murray, and I'll be hosting Saturday Night Live tonight...

...with my musical guest, Delbert McLinton.

I know that it's Lent, but I hope that you're not giving up laughing.

We'll see you later.

Next, the Hill Street Blues search for alligators in the city's sewers.

Tomorrow, Pawnch is forced into a deadly martial arts showdown on chips...

...followed by a mary...
