What a final game we've got

in the college football season.

Still two compelling minutes remaining.

I've always wanted to be a person

that does something that's never been done at a place.

We did it this year at Tech.

McGuire isn't just blowing smoke.

Last season, Tech stepped up in class.

He's got the middle of the field,

and he's gonna run all the way to the house.

The students have been camping out since Monday morning.

and for the first time in school history,

it doesn't hurt to have a billionaire on your side.

Enter Cody Campbell.

One of their mega boosters, this guy, Cody Campbell.

Red Raider Cody Campbell was appointed today

in a ceremony at the White House.

Cody Campbell played offensive line at Texas Tech,

became a landman, and then built an oil company.

He since sold that oil company for more than $4 billion.

And one of the first things he said was

Texas Tech football is about to get a lot better.

Well, I chose to get more involved with Texas Tech

because I feel like so much of who I am is Texas Tech.

My dad was the first in his family

to get to go to college

because of a football scholarship at Texas Tech.

I met my wife at Texas Tech.

I owed it to Texas Tech

to give back everything that I could.

West Texas is all about hard work,

toughness, taking risks.

You know, it basically is the game of football.

And those are the best people in the world.

They're salt of the earth.

They deserve greatness in all aspects.

They deserve great sports teams.

They deserve to be able to go out

and watch the Red Raiders win.

So I'm all in.

Cody Campbell got up there

and he said, okay, let me tell you how this is gonna work.

We need to set up an NFL in college football.

Cody Campbell, you know, he's really pushing the envelope

of everybody at Texas Tech.

We have the best facility in college football.

We're sharing at the highest level in revenue sharing.

It's a really healthy culture.

And because of that,

we can win in the college football playoffs.

Man, Cody called a meeting.

He was just like, yo, whatever you need is there.

Just make sure we're right.

Texas Tech has got their guy.

It is Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

Announced last night he's taking his talents to Lubbock.

Hey, congrats, man.

And that is going to set the market

on how you win in college football.

for former K-State linebacker Austin Romaine,

who announced his commitment today to Texas Tech.

to bring in the talent that they did,

they got everybody's attention.

Well, this seems to be buying an athletic department.

The people who called them the villain

are the people who are used to sitting at the top

and are mad somebody else is making it

a little bit uncomfortable for them.

somebody from the Big 12 is actually making noise

because everybody else, they're all about the same.

They obviously have hit the portal again,

and they got some really key contributors,

namely Brendan Sorsby.

Life has a funny way of coming full circle.

Sorsby's first appearance as a Red Raider

is to support his new team against his old.

When I started thinking about transferring,

you know, it was a really tough decision for me.

You know, obviously,

the last two years that I spent at Cincinnati,

learned a lot, loved my experience.

No, sir.

Nothing that Cincinnati did wrong.

It was great.

But like I said, I think I thought it was time to move on.

We have a really good quarterback in Will Hammond.

Hammond to throw it up top.

We were not expecting to go in the portal

to get a quarterback,

and then Will gets hurt against Oklahoma State.

So he is out.

With what we have invested in this program,

we just couldn't afford any setbacks.

And so we went out

and we got the best quarterback in the portal.

Sorsby wants it now.

If you're talking to NFL scouts about him,

they said he would have been a top 100 pick this year

if he had left as a junior.

Our analytics said he's gonna be

one of the top three quarterbacks

in college football.

you're naturally gonna be thrown into a leadership role.

But it's about gaining these guys' respect

off the field as well.

showing how hard I can work.

And, you know, I'm excited to do everything I can

to lead this team to a national championship.

There's something different about being in Texas.

We really hadn't been to Lubbock much.

And then, you know, when we finally came out here,

you know, obviously, kind of fell in love with it.

And it's been nothing but great ever since.

The state of Texas alone is just a great state.

Obviously, a little biased,

but I think it's the best state out there.

And, you know, it's good to be back.

And, you know, growing up there,

you're always going to football games Friday nights.

And then whenever you do finally get to play in 'em,

it's like a dream come true for, you know, a little kid.

You know, as you get into high school, you turn 18.

Right up the road, there's Winstar,

and you're able to go play a little blackjack

with the fellows at, you know, at 18 years old.

All you do is talk about it,

and then you finally get to do it.

So definitely, definitely fun times

and good memories growing up.

But being a Texas kid, it's always been a dream of mine

to play, you know, at a Texas university.

So being on the right side

of a home game at Texas Tech

and having all those fans, you know,

backing you up and supporting you,

really excited for that.

I think that's gonna be a special environment.

Sorsby isn't the only quarterback

to come to Tech in search of greatness.

For almost 20 years, this small West Texas town

has drawn talented players like moths to a flame.

Tech has had a number

of legendary character types at quarterback.

Even with a lot of great quarterbacks,

it's been a good football program.

They have their first Big 12 championship,

but the expectation going into 2026, obviously,

it probably has to be to finish the job.

Texas Tech, I think they could play

for a national championship.

It is Texas Tech way on an island

out in front of everybody else,

and then the rest of the Big 12

several pool lengths behind them.

Can they make that next step?

Can Brendan Sorsby be the next great Texas Tech quarterback?

Can he be the closest iteration of Patrick Mahomes

for Joey McGuire and this Texas Tech offense?

Tech has spent a lot of time, money, and effort

assembling the best players available.

But a roster isn't a team.

The challenge is turning a collection of stars

into a band of brothers,

and that's Joey McGuire's job.

You know, every team is a new team,

and it starts all the way back over.

Whenever I think through what could I do different,

I think one of the biggest things is not assuming

that this team is gonna come together

the way last year's team was gonna come together.

So me staying on top of connecting,

me staying on top of the coaches connecting,

continuing to talk with the leaders,

that's one of my biggest goals.

The culture we're building, like it's a true family.

I could see very quickly that Coach McGuire

was trying to build a family-like culture here.

He's talking to everybody constantly.

He's always giving you a hard time, messing with you.

He is a player's coach,

and, you know, he truly cares about the players.

What's up, baby? How you doing, baby?

I expect Xs and Os to be right,

but it has to be more than that.

It has to be, you know,

are you pouring into this young man

to be a better man?

You know, what it looks like to be a husband,

what it looks like to be a dad.

And there's such a connection in that building.

McGuire earned his spurs in Texas high school football,

winning three state championships

and a place in the Hall of Fame.

He could have jumped to college ball

long before he did, but he insisted

on seeing his son through his senior year.

And Coach, who's this right here?

It's my son. This is my son, Garret McGuire.

He spent five years as an assistant coach at Baylor

before the job at Texas Tech opened up.

Today, Texas Tech announced

it has fired head coach Matt Wells

eight games into his third year in Lubbock.

I think that this is maybe the most important hire

that Texas Tech is going to make.

They can't swing and miss on this.

Texas Tech football was in an interesting period

at that time.

The energy was low within the program.

The confidence of the fan base was...

you hesitate to use the word, but apathetic.

And we knew we had to have somebody

who could create this level of excitement

and enthusiasm that was missing from the program at that time.

Fortunately for Coach McGuire,

he had the perfect resume for the job.

He coached my sorority's football intramural team.

Yes, was the Zeta Tau Alphas.

We did think it was a long shot.

We did know a lot about Texas Tech

because our daughter had gone to school here.

And we pulled all the resources that we could find

to just get him in the door.

I probably received 50 to 70 phone calls

from Texas high school football coaches

throughout the state.

And they were delivering a message to me

to say, you need to hire Joey McGuire.

I got the first interview, and I thought I did really well.

And they called me back for a second interview,

but they wanted to interview Debbie, my wife.

Well, let me tell you,

I do joke around

that I was the closer.

Yeah. They asked her some questions,

and they were through.

And so she's walking out,

and she just sticks her hand up,

and she goes, "wreck 'em" really loud.

Guns up and just yelling the whole way down.

I think I was very assertive, firm.

We got this.

We're gonna start this thing off right.

My sister went here, two brother-in-laws.

Leadership may be new to Ben,

Where he comes from, football is bigger than a game.

It's a way of life.

When I was younger,

I saw my brothers playing football,

and I was like, man, I want the costume.

What was Ben like as a kid?

The best word to describe him probably is feral.

He and his brother, they were always outside.

It was a hard time

getting him to come inside to eat, to take a bath.

He started playing in the first grade.

He had seen his brother,

going to his brother's peewee football practices.

When they would do sprints at the end of practice,

he'd get out there and do sprints with them.

This is pretty sweet.

I got that for lettering three years in a row.

That's at the Big 12 game

after, I think that was after my second pick.

I haven't actually taken it out of the bubble wrap.

We've got, when we played Cal,

Fernando Mendoza, beat him.

That's the, you know, that's the Big 12 ring.

It's pretty sweet.

Ben is one of those guys

that puts himself in a really good position

to make some big plays on game day

because he is just so steady.

He just comes to work every day, and he just does his job.

his confidence on the field is a proven commodity.

But that grit didn't originate under the stadium lights.

It came from his mother.

My mom, she was in the military.

She was in Iraq and all that.

And she just played a big role on me

because, like, when she came back,

we were always, like, just competitive.

Like, I'd be trying to race her while she running,

but, like, she'd always beat me and stuff.

So, like, I just got that competitiveness from her.

That's my last college drill.

I'm thinking go big, go home for real.

You know, I got cut short last year.

I wanted to win the John Mackey Award,

best tight end in college football.

This year, like, I'm working my tail off for it.

I want to go win the Natty.

I want to win a playoff game

and just show everybody

what we've been working for, honestly.

Right now, trying to put us in some situations,

in some chaos.

Go down there to Jacob and see if he's got crowd noise.

I feel like I can take this offense to another level.

for it to get where we want it to get to.

The former Cincinnati quarterback is being sued.

A lawsuit filed today in federal court

states they're seeking $1 million back

from their former star quarterback.

This is part of a statement from Cincinnati.

In his lucrative NIL agreement with Cincinnati Athletics,

Brendan Sorsby committed to stay and play for two seasons.

Did Sorsby and his team expect that they didn't have to?
