the physical condition
of the babies born
to crack-addicted mothers?

Some of them weigh
only a few pounds.

Their low birth weight
makes them ten times as likely

to die of crib death.

Deformities of the
genital organs are common.

We also see a lot
of neurological damage.

Doctor, based upon the
defendant's toxicology report,

is there any doubt
that if her child

were to be delivered tomorrow,
it would be addicted to cocaine?

No. That fact
would be a medical certainty.

She would deliver
a crack baby.

Tell me, Doctor,
in your expert medical judgment,

given the defendant's
current level of drug use,

what is the prognosis
for the child?

We're getting new statistics
all the time.

This is a relatively
new problem.

But based on what I've seen,

the damage caused
by crack cocaine

passed on by the defendant
will leave her child

-seriously impaired
for the rest of its life.

on this subject?

In particular,
this paper published
by Dr. Helen Damascus,

a recognized leader

who states that the effects
of cocaine in newborn infants

that medical problems,

such as low birth weight,
urinary tract damage,

and the neurological disorders
you attribute to cocaine usage

could be caused
by any number of things,
