after the stress of shops.

So, firstly, you're all back

site in North Wales.

But I want to test your design
skills on something

a bit different.

So I have five brand-new
shepherd's huts.

Wow! Which the owners are very
bravely handing over to you

for you to do your magic on.

Oh, shepherd huts.

Oh, remind me to pack me crook.

On the picturesque Llyn Peninsula

near the border of Snowdonia
National Park,

these quaint shepherd huts have been
built from scratch

for a brand-new glamping retreat.

Each hut has an open-plan living,
dining and sleeping area

and an en-suite shower room.

Plus, the designers will have
the option to dress

the outside space.

Now this site is in a fantastic
location.

So I'd really like to see you
reflect

that amazing landscape
in your designs.

But I also want you to up
the design ante.

Less buying, more bespoke.

Give me something a bit special.

And helping me judge this week

is someone who's got a little bit
of Welsh in his genes.

I'm a boutique hotel kind of a girl.

Back to flying solo.

That's where it's at for me.

Like, I'm my own boss,
I can make my own rules.

I like the bespoke element as well.

This is the challenge.

This challenge is also about showing
your true breadth and range.

Not spread yourself too thinly,

but actually be creative
and resourceful.

Is it an opportunity to just go
completely wild?

I think we can go wild, but then go
commercial at the same time.

Because obviously it is a business
so it has to be profitable,

but I'm looking forward
to this one.

I can see the finish line.

I need to get my act in order
and really start pushing it.

We've got some really strong
designers there.

I need to show why I'm still here
and why I'm the best.

So, shepherd's huts this week.

Now, you really stressed bespoke.
Why did you say that?

Well, I just think we've got this
far through the competition now,

these designers are showing us
some real talent.

Don't just go shopping.

I really want them to design now.

And glamping's become
a really big industry

so you can't really cut corners.

You want the glam in glamping,
don't you, really?

Absolutely. I mean, I think,
you know,

we all want to get back to nature
and out in the great outdoors,

but, you know, no-one really needs
sleeping on the ground.

So we want that kind of feeling
of that boutique hotel

but it's in a shepherd's hut.

And it's a beautiful part of
the world.

How can you incorporate that into
a shepherd's hut?

I think anyone that's going to rent
one of these

is going for that location,

but do you literally get a wallpaper
with flowers

and coastal scenes on it

or do you say, well, I'll just sort
of pick up on the colours,

the textures?

But each of the huts has been given
a slightly different theme.

They're not huge, but it's an
opportunity

to be really clever.

So what about you, Michelle?

I can't really see you in a cagoule
halfway up a mountain.

You know what, I love camping.
Cos it's just... No way!

Yes way! Cos it's about forgetting
all your kind of troubles

and the daily schedules.

How about you? A little bit of
camping?

Nestled at the foot of the majestic
Rivals Mountains in North Wales

are Brook Cottage Shepherd's Huts.

Whoa! It's quite small, isn't it?

Ay, caramba.

The largest measuring just
6 by 2.5 metres,

they are the smallest space our
designers have faced.

So this is going to be my first time
trying to do tiling -

in such a small space, on a
pressurised time limit.

I'm glad I'm not tiling.

Cos how would you even tile
in here?

I suppose you wouldn't have
a backpack on.

Each hut has been given
a distinct theme.

I can't see any sea,
which is awkward

because I've got coastal retreat -
that's my brief.

And as usual, each designer will
have a skilled team...

rustic chic brief.

I think it's really important
this week

to show Michelle my
design credentials.

I would hate for her to think that I
did well in the last two challenges

because I was with a partner.

Amy plans to make her mark with
a mountain-scape mural

painted across three walls.

Behind the bed, a feature wall
will display

her trademark bespoke wallpaper.

Echoing the tin bath outside,

Amy will clad her shower
and fireplace

with corrugated iron sheet

and dress the windows and doors with
a French toile de jouy fabric

on twig curtain poles.

So, the bed will come here -

out as far as it needs to.
Yep.

The designers have each been asked
to create a bespoke bed.

I just want to have it a bit higher
than a normal bed frame

so there's space for storage
underneath. Yeah.

And Amy wants her weary guests
to climb onto

a mountain-inspired design.

Two of these is probably the highest
point you want it.

Yeah, cos otherwise you're going to
be vaulting onto your bed. Yeah.

I'm confident of all of my design
choices,

but rustic and chic is almost like
two different things.

So I think it will be a definite
challenge getting it right.

I've just realised it's not diamond,
is it? It's harlequin.

Harlequin, that famous Welsh
pattern.

Amy isn't the only one making
a splash with colour.

After playing it safe last week,

Fran's going bold with her
bohemian brief.

I'm doing a design that
I really love,

that's really me.

I looked at traditional
bohemian travellers

and then kind of came across
circus designs.

Cos they're, like, travellers -
gypsies, bohemians.

Where you're on the road,
quite nomadic.

T-That's, like, kind of circus life,
isn't it?

As well as her harlequin mural,

Fran is planning to show off her
creative side

with a paint effect bathroom

and bespoke hanging
art installation.

A foldaway table and patterned
bedding

will complete the look.

I feel like I need to trust
my instincts.

Almost maybe forget about
the brief a little bit

and just run with what
I think is great.

So I'm doing bohemian with
an artistic flair,

but I am doing it Fran's way.

You can't send me home, I've done
a fun gypsy wagon!

Next door, Dean is sticking
to familiar territory.

So, I've got the romantic stay here
in this shepherd's hut

so, for me, this is all about
romance.

I want it to be, like, a luxurious
boutique hotel.

So, romantic hut, what colour are
we going?

So we're going black and we're going
to go dark burgundy.

So it's going to be a black flooring
up to here,

all the way up to these cabinets.

The roof is going to be going
completely gold

all the way through the roof
in here.

It's going to go wallpaper
from this side up here.

OK. Black.

Black.

Black is sexy.

You're looking at me like you don't
think black is sexy.

It's not just indoors that Dean
wants to get pulses racing.

I want there to be spaces on the
outside as well as the inside

where you can enjoy that romantic,
that quality time.

So there'll be, like, a seating area
with a fire pit,

and then on the other side there'll
be a bath.

It did say in the brief it needed to
be somewhere you get a wow factor

and somewhere completely different,
and blows your mind.

So I want it to be a hidden gem.

A bit like what I did at the hotel,
but sexier.

Banjo might be missing a sea view,

but he's found a way to bring
the coast to the country.

I'm making a little day bed here.

And I've got a cute little table
flip-down set up

with some lovely chairs.

I'm weaving pendants,

I'm doing an original oil painting.

I'm also turning it into a boat,
so that's a thing.

Boats are tiny so, I mean,
we're good.

So this is the boat that rocked.

Or the boat that sinks.

We'll see.

I know, you know, it's not about
throwing the entire kitchen sink

at that space. It's about using
every little inch

really cleverly.

You know, I've won a couple now,

but it doesn't matter how good
you were last week.

If you drop the ball this week,
it's game over.

Next door, Paul has the largest of
the huts

and his plans are also plus-sized.

My brief was heritage

and all the materials that I'm using
are all either salvaged,

reclaimed, sustainable.

So everything is build.

Everything is build.

Herein lies the challenge.

HE LAUGHS

Paul's ambitious design centres
around a daybed

that opens up for storage.

It will be clad with individually
stained scaffold boards,

and matching banquette seating
will continue the look

along one wall.

His fireplace will be tiled
in Welsh slate

and reclaimed brick,

and natural window dressings and an
upholstered wall

will pull the heritage scheme
together.

Can I do it?

Can I basically deliver
the vision

with all the raw materials
that I've got?

Cos, at the moment, it all looks
like a salvage yard,

so how do I turn that into a luxury
glamping experience?

It's hard, this week, cos I think,
you know what,

we're now the cream
of the crop.

There are no weak players on
the squad.

For me, this is not just a
competition just to win.

This is about being a full-time
interior designer

and doing something I love
to do day in, day out.

I just want to be able to show
my kids

that if you want to do something,

if you're passionate about doing
something, have a go.

So I have to push myself every day

to make sure that they do that
for themselves.

The designers are approaching
the end of day one.

I am stressed because I feel like

coastal cliches,

but to me this is classy.

When I got the brief for coastal,

I wanted to understand what the
coastline was like here.

And it's beautiful here,
but it changes in an instant.

You know, the coastline of Wales
isn't all white sandy beaches

and blue skies, so I wanted it
to be moody.

I wanted it to be rugged.

I wanted it not to be like a typical
seaside holiday kind of theme.

She might think it's
a terrible idea,

but...I love it.

and I am mixing it

so that I can get plants, like,
that I've foraged

around the local area,

and then I dip them in and then they
kind of go hard -

like this ceramic kind of
feel to them.

It's like the centrepiece
when you walk in,

so it needs to look good.

But you have to work quickly
because this will set.

It's already setting.

Here we are, Laurence, in deepest,
darkest Wales,

and our designers have got
to LURE people

to come and stay here.
Lure.

It is a little chilly.

But, you know, this is what it is
to be in Wales.

It's brutal.

It's, you know, literary.
It's romantic.

It's rugged.
It's Laurence.

It's so me! That was all the things
that I normally put in my profile!

What, as far as you're concerned,
are the dos and the don'ts?

They need to be practical.

They need to embody a sense
of escapism, I think.

You want to embrace the outdoors.

I want to feel the landscape.
Mm.

Because they're not conventional
spaces,

all the kind of the Welsh cliches -

sheep, tweed, red dragons -
it's not going to work.

It has to be about attracting
sophisticated, wealthy,

potentially urbanites into a rural
kind of context.

It's a lot to juggle in
a small space.

On wheels.
On wheels.

This week, Paul got well and truly
hands-on with his heritage hut.

I've finished. I've finished.

It looks amazing and I'm so proud.

I think I've nailed it.
I think I've nailed it.

LAURENCE: Holy, holy, holy.

So, this is Paul's shepherd's hut,

and his theme was heritage,
so embracing Welshness.

Do you think he's achieved that?
Well, exactly.

I'm now going deep down into
my Welsh heritage.

This is exactly what my
grandmother's mansion looked like.

Lots of rufty-tufty timber and
sacking at the window.

Er, it's powerfully textured.

You know, and it definitely
feels very, very rural.

I am missing a bit of colour,
I have to say.

It's like a meal entirely made
of carbohydrate.

I'm quite soothed by all these
lovely sages and greens,

and it's all about what's outside
and this just mirrors that.

I mean Paul has a visual
merchandising background.

In previous challenges, I've felt
he's leant a little bit too much

on just styling.

I see a different level
to him here.

I think this is commercial.
I would pay money here.

To me, it seems to hit the brief.

I feel kind of soothed.
I feel relaxed.

And you want to feel as if you've,
you know,

had a hard day's shepherding.

Onwards, then. Onwards.

Next to be judged is Fran's
bold Bohemian hut.

This week, I feel confident.
I am really happy with it.

I've pulled out all the stops.

And I've not played it safe,

so I don't think I'm going to be

Here it is.
I did.

The colours are joyous.

There's something quite fairground
about the way

that the painting's been done.

See, I think of that as being more
gypsy caravan

rather than shepherd's hut.

I like that. And I like the
simplicity of this.

The styling's a bit irritating.

We've definitely run out of steam
on this wall.

Yeah, we could easily have just lost
those extra shelves, couldn't we?

Well, I think this is Fran's piece
of handmade art.

Yeah, less successful.

I think if we were going
to do this - bigger.

They should just have been bigger.

She was given a brief and I think
she's answered it.

My commercial head, though,
is saying,

"Well, how would this let?"

You know, "Would this be as popular
with some of the other statements?"

I can feel my sap rising already.

Adding some spice to the Welsh
countryside

is Dean's love hut.

I've finished, but I'm not over
the moon.

Things that I wanted,
these grand ideas,

just didn't get time to do them.

But I have to be happy with
the bits I have done.

I think, when you go into that room,
it makes you feel a wow moment

and you wouldn't expect it out here,
to go in there and see that room.

Ah, the hut of romance.

Oh, wahey, whoa, hee, oh, ah!

Gosh! Now, this is Dean's hut.

Can you guess his favourite colour?
I was thinking it might be black.

I know. I was really rather hoping
that he wouldn't

have used black in here.

It's not something you often see
in a shepherd's hut,

the mock croc and the crystal and
the gold and the black.

It feels almost as if it's come off
the shelf

from somewhere else and been
applied here.

I love the gold ceiling.

I love it with these lamps and the
way that it kind of reflects.

And that makes me feel quite kind of
special and jewel boxy.

And then, yes, we drop into the
kind of mock croc wallpaper.

I don't like these.

I don't like the furry things.

I don't think those are going to be
terribly practical.

Also, there's a fine line between
romance and sexy.

This is a snog really,
isn't it?

It's not a peck on the cheek.

What's the bathroom like?
Let's have a look.

Is there somewhere to put
your flake?

The bathroom is a triumph
of tiling.

Lovely glossy black tiles.

I guess this hut is all about
the bed

cos I can't see a table anywhere,
unless this counts.

Are we not eating on our romantic
break away?

No, obviously. Just sort of peeling
each other grapes.

And it does look a little like
he's not quite finished,

which I'm wondering,
if he didn't finish,

what it was that sort
of took all the time.

I don't think it was the styling.

But the more you stay in here,

kind of the contrast to the outside
is actually kind of wonderful.

I like the hutzpah of it all.

You know, I love the Bond villain
of it all.

You could have, you know,

the world's most wanted shepherd
sitting in here

with a large cat on his lap, kind of
chuckling maniacally.

Or maybe a small sheep.

Come on, Laurence, before you get
too carried away.

It's full steam ahead to HMS Banjo,
the coastal-inspired design.

Something kicked in that
I didn't know I had.

And I'm, like, stoked.

It stretched me and it
lit something in me.

MICHELLE: Oh, I see that Banjo's
introduced a little bit

of the beach theme right
from the outside.

I like... This boardwalk is
obviously

a very practical solution.

The theme is very hard-wired
into the design.

Oh, so this is Banjo's hut.

Are you feeling coastal?

I'm seeing little kind of peg things
and oars.

There's a lot more design in here.

I think this is very interesting.

So he's integrated the table.

He's got a flap-up table as part
of the headboard.

Show me how it works.

Is it easy to flap up?

Oh! Yes, you see, I did that in
a very brusque way.

And generally, the way that the bed
feels is quite happy.

I love the way that it's looking
straight out

to the mountains like that.

Now let me tell you about
the bathroom.

I think it might be Banjo's
first time at tiling

so he might need a little bit
more practice on that.

I love the materials and the colours
that he's used.

There's something much jollier
about this space.

There's something a little bit more
Captain Pugwash about this space.

What you can really tell about Banjo
is he develops a story

behind his designs, which I think
is kind of

the ultimate, pure way of designing.

That works. That really works.

So, OK, onwards, rustic chic.

I do feel slightly overdressed
for rustic, but what the hey.

Last but not least, waiting to wow
the judges

is Amy's rustic chic hut.

I've not done a mural wall before,

I haven't used corrugated
steel before.

You know, we needed to push
ourselves this week,

so I'm just going to hope that
it works.

Now, I love that.

That's my favourite bit of exterior
styling so far.

That's powerful,

love the textures and it's terribly
amusing as well.

I'd have that thing full of gin.

Ah, look, and we've repeated
the corrugated inside.

Haven't we just!
So I do like that.

We've got more of the tin around
the shower.

It's very much the same language.

Oh, it's a bit high for me
to perch on the bed.

Did you try and do that casually?

Yes, well, I'm not going to get

I feel as if I'm being watched.

There's a sort of presence
behind me.

There is a malevolent presence above
your head, indeed.

And is that where the birdsong

Yeah. So I think in almost every
single one of her challenges

so far, she's created a bespoke
wallpaper.

So, how does this relate to
the theme?

Did she Google rustic, do we know?

I'm not sure, but I mean I'm kind of
feeling

a bit of children's playground
going on here.

But then you've got kind of
toile de jouy cottage core

with these little frilly curtains.

Possibly a little muddled.

And everyone else so far has quite
rightly worked out

that when you've got a bed it can
also be a sofa.

But not if even the great and -
let's face it -

incredibly leggy Michelle Ogundehin
can't get on it.

And considering the view is there,

you know, actually you're lying
that way

and all you're doing is looking
at the dead magpie!

Come on, we've got some hard
decisions to make.

We'd got what I thought looked
like a kind of

children's nursery playground thing
going on.

We had her kind of very urban print.
No rustic.

And she's here on the sofa!

She just threw too much at it.

Dean, I think, kind of didn't
throw enough at it.

And then I think what Fran
threw at it

wasn't really what we were
looking for.

I felt it was a bit too gypsy hut...

So I just want to understand how she
kind of translated that.

I mean, at the end of the day,

there's a commercial contract on
offer for the winner here.

And the two that we've sent straight
through just nailed that.

So, every week I am adding
another layer

to your understanding of what makes
a really successful

and commercial design.

So, Amy, if I can start with you,

what is your understanding
of rustic?

Because I was a little confused by
your interpretation of it.

Oh, I think, do you know, I didn't
want to really necessarily

go for, like, a cliche rustic chic.

I wanted to bring some colour in,

and a lot of the materials that
I used I perceived as rustic.

We loved the tin bath and the
corrugated metal.

That was wonderful.
That was wonderful.

And it was cheeky as well.

Well, I would've liked more
screening

cos I'm a very private person
when I'm...

As would everybody else, you know?

Yes.

I think the thing that I sort
of slightly struggled on

is just the delivery of the colours,
because it was so graphic.

And I've loved the way that you've
created a bespoke wallpaper,

but it felt a bit more urban
sophisticated

than kind of glorious
Welsh landscapes,

so was this the one challenge

that perhaps you shouldn't have
done that?

I think because it is my
brand identity,

I just didn't want to not do it.

It felt just like another layer
that I could add.

Again, though, it was in
the delivery.

The pattern that we ended up with
from you was quite sharp.

It's quite precise, yeah.
Yeah.

I would've loved it if you'd
taken more of a key

from the toile de jouy that
you used elsewhere.

You need to bring them together.

There needs to be a language that
they share.

I think that's the lesson I'm sure
we've talked about before.

It's like, take that one strong line
and follow that through.

I'm going to go straight in for
the jugular on this one.

What is it with you and the
colour black?

Would another colour have been an
option for the hut this week?

I think, yeah, I wanted to give them
that wow factor,

so when someone walks into that room
or books it they're like,

"Wow, I've never been here before.
Where are we?"

I do think it just gave that bit
of drama that it needed.

But it is about the bigger picture
though, isn't it?

Cos, I mean, this was a couple's
retreat. Yeah.

Where was my table for two?

Cos all I saw was a solo stool
at the end of the kitchen.

Yes, yes, yes. It's like, "Oh, did
we already have an argument?"

There was a few things that were
meant to happen

to make it really romantic.

There was supposed to be
an outside bath.

There was supposed to be a table
where you could sit

and eat your dinner.

I think it was just the time
efficiency of certain things.

So what was it that took up
all the time?

I wanted to push myself so I think,
when it came to the bathroom,

I did the tiling, but it took
a long time

and I think that's where a lot
of my time was left

where I could've left the tiling and
maybe moved onto something else.

This is one of the most difficult
lessons to learn.

Ultimately, you've got to make money
as an interior designer,

and if you give too much
of yourself,

if you give too much time,
you're not going to do that.

And actually, I think you should
have been firmer

about calling some of those shots.

Because if you don't, you lose
the important other bits.

Yeah.

So, Fran...
Oh...

..your theme was bohemian.

What was your understanding
of it in design terms?

So, I initially thought kind of
shabby chic,

very pretty and delicate.

But I had kind of this echo from
last week in shops of, like,

"Don't go neutral, go strong,
challenge yourself."

So then I started to look
into, like,

medieval history from Wales

and then traditional kind of
traveller huts and wagons.

So I decided to go that route and
just make it a bit more punchy.

And we did really love
all those colours,

but for me what I saw was very much
sort of gypsy caravan,

which they have their identity
as they roll through

different landscapes.
Yeah.

Here you are so firmly routed
to one spot in North Wales.

It didn't feel Welsh.

I think I did kind of take a risk,

I went a bit off-brief and
I thought,

"I'm going to go with the artistic
and just go for it."

Now, can we have a little bit of a
chat about the suspended hedgerow?

We had all this kind
of splendid palate

and then we've got, I don't know,
broccoli in glue in white.

I think I'd invested so much time
into making the plants

that I felt like to walk away
from it

I'd have been disappointed
in myself.

But you see what all three of you
have done

in slightly different ways,

you get distracted from
the main thing

that you were supposed to be doing.
Yeah.

And what's a shame is it then took
away from what you did do.

And that's the difference -

the other two had very clear what
they were going to do,

one liner, and they did it.

And that is one of the biggest
lessons

that you've got to learn.

And it's about confidence.

So, I'm afraid that the person that
I'm going to send home this week...

..is Dean.

I mean, can I just say, though -

you have blazed a spectacular
trail... Thank you.

To get this far in the competition
is a big achievement.
