people out of Central Park.

And I saw her give
her phone number to a girl,

and then that child showed up.

Miss Maxwell did explain that
there would be a lot of women
around.

She said, "You'll see lots
of bees around the honey pot,

but I'm the queen bee,
always remember that."

Miss Maxwell is the reason
that I was abused.

She led me into that situation.

[Helm]
Everybody wants
to talk about him,

and it's not focused
on Ghislaine.

She facilitated it.
She made the network happen.

I love the smell
of the ocean spray.

The sound of the waves.

The cry of the sea birds.

The sunsets, the sunrises.

I love the ocean.

In New York,
stunning testimony today

from an alleged victim
in the sex trafficking trial

of Jeffry Epstein's companion
Ghislaine Maxwell.

The first of Ghislaine
Maxwell's four accusers,

testifying under
the pseudonym Jane,

graphically described
the first time

Jeffrey Epstein
sexually abused her.

Some of the details
are absolutely harrowing.

Maxwell, she says,
fondled her breasts.

Jeffrey Epstein sexually
assaulted her with sex toys

when she was 14 years old.

It's a trial a quarter
century in the making.

And of course since that time,

the victims have been looking
for a reckoning.

[Sigrid McCawley]
I've been working
with the survivors

of Jeffrey Epstein
and Ghislaine Maxwell

for about seven years now.

I think for any of the women
who are being called to testify,

there's a lot of anxiety
with having to face your abuser

in a court of law.

There will be a lot of relief
in this as well,

because they'll have
the opportunity

to talk to the jurors
about what happened to them.

There's been
a lot of speculation

about why it took so long for
Maxwell to be held accountable.

That involves
power and privilege

in a way that was unique
to this circumstance.

Well, there's so many of us
that have walked around

feeling like we don't have the
right to speak up for ourselves.

I definitely need to be here
to show her

that everything
that she's taken from me,

I'm taking it all back.

It has to be the turning point,

that society as a whole
puts that stake in the ground,

draws that line and says

you cannot get away
with these things

just because of who you are
and how much money you have.

I'm an attorney practicing
in West Palm Beach, Florida.

I represented one of the first
young victims to come forward

here in Palm Beach County
against Mr. Epstein.

Through that process
we began to understand

the full breadth of Mr.
Epstein's sexual conspiracy,

and the organization
which involved Maxwell,

as well as many
of the other young girls

that she had trained.

These were young girls, some of
them as young as 14 years old,

who did not have the wherewithal
to understand

what they were
getting themselves into.

[police officer]
The premises desired to be
searched

is a two-story,
single-family residence,

occupied or under the control
of Jeffrey Epstein,

white male,
date of birth 1.20.53.

[Spencer Kuvin]
The first young lady
that I represented

never specifically
mentioned Maxwell.

But there was
this older, British,

distinguished lady
behind the scenes.

They didn't know who she was.
She was answering the door.

She was escorting
people through.

She was telling them, "Oh, go
up there. Go into that room,"

or "Go into the kitchen."

When my clients visited,
they would frequently see

pictures of Ghislaine Maxwell
with very famous individuals,

and it was very clear she was
very wealthy and powerful.

But at the beginning we weren't
really focused on her,

so we never learned the full
breadth of her part in this

until much later on.

we were focused on Epstein.

Later during the investigation,

when interviewing
and conducting the deposition,

the name Maxwell
would come up repeatedly.

Ghislaine Maxwell was
a lot more than just someone

who stayed in a room
at the Palm Beach mansion.

She was directing the activities
that were going on there.

What we came to learn is that

by the time
of this investigation,

Maxwell had stepped away

from the direct recruitment
of young girls.

She had trained
primary recruiters.

Those primary recruiters then
would train local recruiters

to get girls
to come over to the house.

This sexual pyramid scheme

really had Ghislaine Maxwell
at the top.

We as attorneys
wanted to talk to her.

We knew that she was jet-setting
across the world.

We knew that she could fly
to France

or Virgin Islands
at any moment.

We had heard
that she was at some kind

of a private benefit event
up in New York at one point,

so we had hired process servers
to go and try and serve her.

Unfortunately,
that ended up in a failure.

They couldn't get in
and get her served.

So we were never able to issue
a subpoena to her at the time,

because she had essentially
disappeared in the wind.

[Cathy]
I went down to tidy his room,

and there on his dresser
was the arrest warrant.

I actually didn't read
what the thing was

until he actually told us
up in the kitchen.

I think I was
too frightened to snoop.

When he spoke to us
on that morning,

he said it was
for solicitation of a minor

for prostitution, huh?

-Something like that.
-Something like that.

In all honesty, I was shocked.

-We were shocked.
-We were both shocked.

The way it was explained to us
was basically

a "slap on the wrist" fine,

like a traffic fine
that they're charging him with,

well, it seemed like it.

So I said, "Well, just pay the
fine and get over and done."

"Get it out of the news.
Get everything sorted."

At that point in the
relationship between the two of
them,

I think it was
pretty antagonistic at points.

He actually told us...

that, um... she'd gone.

Yeah, one day she's...

One day, he walked into the
kitchen and he said, "It's
over."

I actually felt quite sorry
for him at the time.

[Miles]
It was a bit... traumatic.

Traumatic. We had
a couple of fighting matches.

I wouldn't go too deep
into that.

No, I know,
which is understandable, um...

So you could see
this relationship was moving

in a different direction, yeah.

Miss Maxwell was not around,
um, for... for quite a while.

She got involved with a man
that does computers,

as far as I remember.

[Cathy] She was completely
just out of the whole...

-[Miles] Out of the loop.
-Out of the loop.

So you could see she'd started
a new life for herself,

which I thought
was good for her, you know.

The relationship uh,
between Epstein and Maxwell,

who was dominant,
who was subservient,

how many of the strategies
and tactics

for recruiting and grooming
uh, came from Maxwell,

and how much came from Epstein,

uh, we'll never
probably know completely.

But what we do know is that
Maxwell bears responsibility

not only
for the young women and girls

who she personally recruited,

but also for her role
in the overall enterprise,

where she would recruit somebody
to recruit somebody else,

to recruit somebody else,
to recruit somebody else.

I think that one
of the cruelest things

that Epstein and Maxwell did

is to induce, coerce,
these young girls

to bring in other young girls.

[Phillips]
It has been
a really big journey for me

to actually get to that point

where I'm not
in denial anymore,

and I can say,
"Yeah, I was abused too."

I was already in the islands
next to him, in St. John's,

and I just was with a friend,

and she asked me
to go with her to the island.

So I didn't know
about this whole private island

and, like,
who Jeffrey Epstein was.

I didn't know anything
when I went with her that day.

I had only met Jeffrey
pretty briefly

before someone
was sent to our room

to, uh, bring us there
for a massage.

And so I just thought,
OK, well, it's kind of weird,

but I trust the girl
that brought me.

So, um, yeah,
we went to his room,

and I realized at the time that
the girl that brought me there,

she had done this before,

so she was very comfortable,

and she was massaging him,

and I kind of
just took her lead.

And then, um...

pretty quickly afterwards,
you know,

is when Jeffrey, um,

started touching me
inappropriately,

and that's, like,
when the abuse happened, um...

I was really confused
about what happened.

I just, like, realized

maybe that's why
she brought me there,

was kind of to lure me to him,

and she was the one who got paid
for bringing me.

She made it seem like
it was like no big deal at all.

It was hard for me to deal with
it for many years after that.

And then hearing so many other
women had the exact same story

of another young person,
another young woman,

bringing them to Jeffrey
for a massage,

but then getting
sexually abused.

And every time I hear it,
I'm just like thinking,

"That was me, that was me."

I'm headed
to the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.

This is just like
another step for me

just to realize
and kind of move on and heal.

This whole nightmare
never would have happened

if it wasn't for Ghislaine.

The woman who brought me
to Jeffrey's island

was recruited by her.

There were so many people
that she brought

that brought others,
that brought others,

so it was just
all these, like, layers.

It's scary that I fit
into that story somehow.

[Boies]
That's the way
pyramid schemes work.

That's the way enterprises
of this scope and scale work.

That was part of the power,

part of the reason
why it was able to recruit

not just
a handful of young girls,

but dozens,
hundreds of young girls.

There was no one else
in the pyramid

who had her position.

No one else
who had her wealth, her status.

No one else did Epstein
give $30 million to.

So if you put Epstein
at the top of the pyramid,

Maxwell's right next to him.

And the only question is,

is she right next to him
at the same level,

or is she right next to him

at the level
immediately below him?

Jeffrey Epstein's
personal 727 aircraft

arrived at PBIA
from Newark at 5 p.m.

The investor, traveling
with a small entourage,

was met at the private
Galaxy Aviation.

Jeffrey Epstein went to jail
just before ten this morning.

He pleaded guilty in open court.

He agreed to serve
a total of 18 months

in a Palm Beach
detention facility,

12 for felony solicitation
of prostitutes,

and an additional six
for procuring persons under 18
for prostitution.

The guilty plea and deal
end a years-long process

that could have sent Epstein
to jail for 15 years.

I couldn't believe that
he got the sweetheart deal.

The federal government
interviewed

at least 40 young girls,

but, for some reason,
the government decided

that they were gonna use
one case

as the case
that they would convict him of.

They're letting him out
during the day

to walk around and have lunch,

and have massages at his office.

He got out after only one year.

[reporter]
A few steps, a smile,

and a wave
to the deputy at the door.

We watched Jeffrey Epstein
walk out of jail,

but only his attorneys
heard from him.

He's very happy
that his jail sentence is over

and uh, he can begin
a new chapter in his life.

[Kuvin]
They entered into what's called

a non-prosecution agreement.

That prevented
any further prosecution

of not just Jeffrey Epstein,

but also any others

who may have been involved.

Maxwell is not mentioned,

and we have to assume
that that was intentional.

Jeffery probably told her,
"Just disappear,

go away,
stay away from all of this,

and don't worry about it,
I'll take care of it."

[Boies]
The non-prosecution agreement
was a corrupt agreement,

and it should never have let

people like Maxwell walk.

I think it led

to a sense of invulnerability,

uh, it- it led to a sense of
confidence,

that having beat that,
she was free.

[ticking]

If the United Nations create

a stand-alone
ocean development goal,

that is a needle mover.

That will make new laws,
new governance,

and a new way
at looking at the ocean,

and that is what
will change the world.

So how does it... does it

you've been a philanthropist
your whole career.

Tell us about your idea
and how global citizens

can save our common oceans.

The ocean is absolutely vital

to all planetary life systems.

I call it the blue heart
of the planet.

I met Ghislaine at a party
at the Four Seasons restaurant.

There was a lot
of major celebrities there,

a lot of air kissing going on.

She knew a lot of people there.

I thought
she was utterly charming.

I had no clue, um,

that she was involved
in any of these things.

The thing
that she talked about the most

was, of course, the ocean.

I mean, in many ways,
the ocean became like her baby.

Your excellencies, presidents,
lords, ladies and gentlemen,

um, I just would like
to thank you so much,

and it's such a honor
to be here.

Who doesn't wanna have
a clean ocean?

I mean, it's, you know,
it's kind of a worthy project.

[Ghislaine] All you're signing
is that you want the ocean

to be sustainably managed.

And that is the message
we're bringing here. Thank you.

At the end of the night,
the party's breaking up,

and she asked me,
"Can you give me a lift home?"

I drove her home
and dropped her off

in front of her townhouse.

And then she made
this astonishing offer.

She says to me, uh,
"If you come in and fuck me,

I will tell you
the secrets of my father."

I was completely speechless,

and I came up
with a very lame excuse

that I needed to go home
and walk the dog.

And she knew
it was a kind of a BS excuse,

but she gave me a kiss
on the cheek and she said,

uh, you know,
"Hope to see you soon."

It's kind of like, by day,

she's very, very involved

in trying to save the oceans
uh, and- and fix the world,

but by night, it's like turning
into Dracula or something.

It was like a switch.

[Celhia de Lavarene]
I just came back from uh, Haiti,

where children
are trafficked for sex.

And I wanted to open
uh, a safe uh, haven,

if we can say,
to help those kids.

And my friend decided to have
a fundraising event for that.

I hear that uh,
Ghislaine Maxwell came.

I don't know
why she was in the picture.

I didn't even know who she was.

I guess it's because
the French ambassador was there

and she wanted to look good.

She was in the picture
and then she left.

I know one thing.

That woman you're talking about,
uh, Maxwell, did not give a
cent.

[Boies]
The way she was able
to manipulate the media

to think of her
as a, quote, environmentalist,

um, as opposed
to a sex trafficker,

um, probably continued
to contribute

to her sense of being above the
law, of being invulnerable.

I think it led her

to be perhaps careless.

It may have contributed
to her ultimate undoing.

Emotions running high
in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.

A tearful accuser
said she was 14

when Maxwell told her
she had a great body

for Jeffrey Epstein
and his friends.

We're up to our third accuser,
and her name is Carolyn.

She is testifying
under her first name,

and she is the second accuser
to allege that Ghislaine Maxwell

had fondled her breasts
when she was 14 years old.

She said she was brought
into Epstein's orbit

via Virginia Giuffre, Roberts,

who was a- a very key figure

in the whole
Ghislaine Maxwell saga.

Virginia was one of the first
people, if not the first person,

to come forward
with the evidence

that not only
were Epstein and Maxwell

abusing young women themselves,

but they were
actually trafficking

young women to other men.

The highest profile person

that uh, Virginia uh, identified

as someone to whom
she was trafficked

by Epstein and Maxwell
was Prince Andrew.

Ghislaine woke me up
in the morning, excited,

and she said, "You're gonna meet
a prince today."

Ghislaine said,
"He's coming back to the house,

and I want you to do for him
what you do for Epstein."

The abuse went on for
a little bit in the bathroom,

and then it continued
to the bedroom,

and he wasn't rude or anything
about it,

he said, you know, thank you.

[Boies]
My first reaction was
did this really happen?

You know, is it- is it really
true?

To hear that...

a member of the royal family,

a prince of England, uh,

was engaged in that conduct, um,

was- was something
that I found surprising,

uh, shocking, disturbing.

Sex trafficking tends to be
something that you associate

with Third World countries.

It's not something
that you think happens

in the United States,
in the United Kingdom.

She said she had sex with you
three times.

Once in a London house
when she was trafficked to you.

-In Maxwell's house.
-Yes.

Once in New York,

a month or so later,
at Epstein's mansion.

And once on his private island

in a group
of seven or eight other girls.

No.

She says she dined with you,

danced with you
at Tramp nightclub in London.

She went on to have sex with you
in a house in Belgravia

belonging to Ghislaine Maxwell,
your friend.

Your response?

I have no recollection

of ever meeting this lady.

[McCawley]
I talked to my partner,
David Boies,

and he said, "I have
this new case that's come in

that I think
really is suited for you

because of the work you've done
um, in foster care

and with
sex trafficking victims."

I went to New York
and I met with Virginia,

and within moments
of that meeting,

my life really turned
upside down in many ways.

Virginia made public
that Maxwell had been involved

at the head
of the sex trafficking scheme

along with Epstein.

[reporter]
Can I ask you about the-
the- all the allegations

that have come out, Ghislaine?

Have you got no comment at all?

I've made a statement.
Thank you.

Then Maxwell came forward
and made the statement

that Virginia's claims
were, quote, obvious lies.

That gave us the hook to be able
to sue Maxwell for defamation,

and that really started
the journey

in being able
to hold Maxwell accountable

for the crimes she committed.

We were a tight female team,
and we just dug into it.

We pieced together
the flight logs

in a way
that no one ever had before,

to really map that out

and understand the trafficking
scheme as a whole.

We had the police reports

from the 2005 investigation
in Florida

that showed Maxwell
at the centerpiece of this,

helping arrange the girls,
being very active there,

despite her claims
that she was not.

We spoke to many, many survivors

of Epstein and Maxwell's abuse.

Some of those survivors
uh, would say,

"I-I can't give you any
information. I'm too scared."

It was a very scary
time period.

I myself had threats
and I was scared at times.

I also had people following me.

As you can imagine, there are
incredibly powerful people

who are involved
in this sex trafficking scheme.

They certainly didn't like

that I was turning over stones,

finding out more information.

Maxwell's deposition
is significant

because it's really
the only document we have

that shows testimony
she has given

about the sexual
trafficking scheme.

One of the things
that stood out to me right away

was how obstructionist
Maxwell was going to be.

I asked her
a- a pretty simple question,

"So, Miss Maxwell, when
did you first recruit a female

to work for Mr. Epstein?"

She said, "I don't understand
what you mean by female."

"I don't understand
what you mean by recruit."

"Please be
more specific and clear."

So that just shows you
how difficult

she was willing
to make that deposition,

how she was going to
stop at nothing

to um, not give information.

Maxwell definitely had
an air of entitlement,

is the best way
I can describe it.

"How dare you bring me
into a conference room

and ask me questions."

"I know presidents.
I know princes,

and I should not be bothered

with these kinds
of allegations."

There was another significant
moment in the deposition

where she actually gets so
frustrated with me and so angry

that she slams her fist
on my conference room table,

causing my court reporter's

uh, stenographer machine
to fall over.

And my court reporter
looked at me

and said, "I'm so scared."

In that moment, I realized

what the women that I represent
have gone through,

and to- to see how willing she
was

to come forward
in that environment

and attack at this level

um, just confirmed everything
that I knew about her.

In the final analysis, they paid
a lot of money to resolve it.

The result
of the defamation case

was very important to Virginia,

not only because of the economic
security it gave her,

but also it was a vindication.

Remember, she had been
accused by Maxwell

of making this all up.

I sometimes felt angry

at the way she dismissed

the victims
of the sex trafficking,

but there were times
when I-I felt sorry for her too.

You know, I tried to understand

what led somebody
to do these things.

I would never describe her
as a victim,

but I would describe her

as a damaged human being,

and what caused that damage,
I don't know.

I've never been able
to understand

why after our civil litigation
was resolved,

Maxwell did not go
to the prosecutors

and try to do a deal.

She could have
given them Epstein.

Now, maybe she was just still

too under Epstein's sway,

but she somehow almost seemed

to put that out of her mind

and go forward uh, as is-
as if it didn't happen.

She should have known
that her days were numbered.

[Anne McElvoy]
She started to turn up
more again in London

in the late 20 teens.

I felt that was probably
quite shrewd

and strategic on her part,

that she wanted something
that was away

from the whole Epstein story.

I think probably also
she wanted to know

if London
was still talking to her.

Things were clearly still
unraveling at a- at a rate,

of which I certainly
was not aware at the time.

You would never
be able to tell,

if you met Ghislaine Maxwell,
what was going on.

I mean, it was always
the same smooth,

ocean-going confidence.

I met her uh, through friends

who'd brought her to a party
that we were at.

We talked about
our Oxford years.

And she said "It was
a great time, wasn't it?"

And I said,
"Yeah, it was a great time."

And she said, "Yes,
it's... it's sad, isn't it,

how things turn out?"

A judge ruled this afternoon

that federal prosecutors
broke the law

when they signed a plea
agreement with Jeffrey Epstein.

That's because
the agreement was hidden

from 30
of his underage victims.

The case received
renewed attention

after
theMiami Herald published

a lengthy investigation
into the plea deal.

[Christina Oxenberg]
January 2019,

oddly enough she likes,

clicks "like",
on an Instagram post of mine.

And her timing
was pretty appalling

because by now
I know everything,

and I'm furious,
I'm appalled,

I'm disgusted.

Because 20 years ago,

Ghislaine told me that
she recruits three girls a day,

but she was using
the word "girls."

I literally just thought
she was just talking about

human beings, women.

In that article,
I see all of that,

and I'm horrified...

that she was talking
about children.

We had been discussing children.

It was hard to take on, um...

on a lot of levels,
because, um...

I felt responsible, in a way,

that I had known information

that could have maybe
made a difference.

And, um, I felt sick.

I was disgusted with her.

I felt I had let humanity down.

And yet I didn't know
what I didn't know.

The billionaire American
financier Jeffrey Epstein

has been formally charged
with the sex trafficking

of dozens of underage
teenage girls.

The alleged behavior
shocks the conscience.

And while the charge conduct
is from a number of years ago,

it is still profoundly important

to the many alleged victims,
now young women.

They deserve
their day in court.

[McCawley]
This is a great day
for victims,

and I am humbled and inspired
by their voices.

Our clients
are extremely gratified

that these charges
have finally been brought.

Jeffrey Epstein found dead
in an apparent suicide.

The financier,
arrested on charges

that he ran
a sex trafficking ring,

apparently killed himself today
in prison.

[reporter]
He took the easy way out,

not having to face justice,

not having to face the victims,

And now it's entirely possible
this entire- this entire thing

may be put in a file
and never seen again.

[Helm]
I had plugged
my phone in to charge,

and when I plugged it in,
I accidentally had swiped it

to, like, the news thing.

Then there was his face.

I looked at this headline,
and it read:

"Jeffrey Epstein found in
fetal position in jail cell."

I was shaking, you know.

My heart was racing.
I was scared.

I was... I was crying.

I... I didn't know what to do.

I had spent 17 years

replaying all of that
countless times.

And I had spent 17 years...

keeping that in
a very, very tightly sealed,

buttoned-up space of shame.

It was like a re-traumatization
all over again.

It was...

The world, you know, shifted.

But I knew, that was
that moment that I was, like,

"You are not gonna sit here
anymore and stay silent."

"It's not how Jeffrey died,
but it's how he lived,

and we need to get to the bottom

of everybody
who was involved with that,

starting with Ghislaine Maxwell.

I went to New York City

and spoke in federal court

in August of 2019.

I said, "Ghislaine Maxwell
needs to be held accountable

because she's what
got me there."

She groomed me to walk myself

to the home
of a predator willingly.

If it were not for her,

I would not have been abused.

Jeffrey Epstein may be dead,

but the investigation continues
into his web of abuse.

According to new reports,

the FBI has launched
an investigation

of the British socialite
Ghislaine Maxwell.

The big question,
Lady Victoria, now

is where is Ghislaine Maxwell?

You knew her well. When did you
last have any contact with her?

I haven't seen her
since September last year.

Um, I don't think we'll...
you're gonna...

No one's gonna find her.

[ticking]

For months, prosecutors say
Ghislaine Maxwell hid away

in this New Hampshire mansion.

But Thursday,
FBI agents moved in.

[woman]
Good morning.

Today we announce charges

against Ghislaine Maxwell

for helping Jeffrey Epstein
sexually exploit and abuse

multiple minor girls

who were as young
as 14 years old.

The moment I got the phone call
that Maxwell had been arrested,

I called all of my clients.

I remember crying
on the phone with them.

It was around nine o'clock
in the morning,

and I got a phone call
from my lawyer,

and she let me know that
Ghislaine had been arrested.

And... I... It wa...

I mean, it was like a cel...
It was a celebration.

I was laughing and crying
at the same time.

Today, after many years,

Ghislaine Maxwell
finally stands charged

for her role in these crimes.

She had hoped
she could be released

to a luxury hotel in New York
to wait out the trial,

but ultimately a judge said
there were no set of conditions

that could ensure
she would not flee,

the risk simply too great.

After a life of luxury,

this is now Ghislaine Maxwell's
stone-cold reality.

Denied bail, imprisoned
in solitary confinement,

and heavily guarded here,

at the Metropolitan Detention
Center in Brooklyn,

with her trial
at least a year away.

[Maloney]
I'm still in a state of shock.

I can't believe that Ghislaine

would have stooped
to that level.

I really...

Part of me
doesn't want to believe it,

and part of me
doesn't believe it.

Not the Ghislaine I knew.

But, then again,
a lot can happen in 40 years.

I'm sure
that there are many people

who do not view
Ghislaine Maxwell

through those lenses
of a predator or a monster.

They view her as whatever
fun party they attended,

or whatever holiday
they attended with her.

She's not walking around

shouting to the world
that she was a predator.

She wasn't sharing that at
the holiday parties, you know.

So I don't necessarily
blame folks

that can't see her that way.

I think that sometimes people
have very deep, dark secrets,

and this is
a very deep, dark secret

that she carried on, you know.

The unfortunate
harsh reality it is

for those that love
and care for her.

We're back this morning
with the latest

on the Ghislaine Maxwell
sex trafficking trial.

She denies all of the charges
against her.

[reporter]
Three women who say as
teenagers they were exploited

have so far given evidence
at this trial.

Today began the long anticipated
testimony of Annie Farmer,

the only accusing witness

stepping forward
against Ghislaine Maxwell

in her real name.

And it began
with the prosecution saying,

"Is there anyone
in this courtroom

who has ever given you
a massage?"

And she said yes
and identified the defendant.

She said
that she was asked to disrobe

and told to turn around,
lying on her back,

that Ghislaine Maxwell
pulled down the sheet,

exposing her breast
and touching her breast.

It was definitely Ghislaine
who asked me first

about my sister Annie.

Because I was always bragging
about her to everyone.

I mean, she was my whole world,
so I was like,

"Oh, my gosh,
my sister's the smartest,

the most beautiful,
the most angelic."

And I had definitely
bragged about her

to Epstein and to Ghislaine.

This is in 1995.
I was in Palm Beach.

And I was sitting outside
by the pool,

and Ghislaine was, you know,

leaning on a chaise,
and she said,

"Oh, it's too bad Annie's
not here with us, you know."

"It would be very nice
to have her here."

And I said,
"Oh, she would love it."

"She would have
so much fun, definitely."

Ghislaine's role with Annie
was huge, it- it's everything,

because my mother
and everyone believed,

we all believed,
that Annie would be safe

with a married couple.

They told my mother
that they were married.

They told me they were married,

you know, right when I first
started working for them,

but it was to make us feel safe.

Because what woman
is gonna attack a child, right?

We didn't know
that women did that.

And we didn't understand
when we found out

how a woman
could participate in this.

It was really
the most shocking part.

[Klasfeld] So, after two
very brisk weeks of trial,

the government has rested,

and it's rested
with this explosive testimony

from Annie Farmer.

The other witnesses were crying

as they recounted
these really troubling memories.

With Annie Farmer,
it's a different dynamic.

It's the unflappable
Annie Farmer.

I did tell Annie
that I was very...

I- that I was very proud of her,

that she...
that she was so brave.

She did it for everybody, like
Virginia and Teresa and myself.

She's just that generous,
you know,

that she would be
thinking of everyone.

This trial
is incredibly important

for everyone
who's ever suffered,

I think,
any kind of sexual abuse.

I'm concerned, very concerned,
if she's released.

Um, if she's not
held accountable,

that would be very damaging.

I reported this thing 26 years
ago to the federal government.

They nursed it, allowed it to
exist very clearly for 26 years.

And it just makes me really mad

that, um, these people
are able to get away

with abusing as many people
as they do,

'cause you don't recover
from those things.

They have all that power,
all that credibility,

and Ghislaine gave... lent
that credibility to Epstein.

That's what she provided
in this charade.

What it did do to me,
this experience,

is it took away my trust

in every human being
on this earth,

because if you can't trust
the people

who are running the whole show,
who can you trust?

[Helm]
Walking into that courtroom,

my body was shaking,
my heart was racing.

Being in the same room
with Ghislaine

for the first time in 19 years,

I was overwhelmed physically.

Her and I looked
straight at one another.

I didn't look away, not...
I didn't blink.

She looked away.

This is me asserting my freedom,
and asserting my power,

and taking back
what was taken from me.

But I couldn't help but notice,

some of her body language,
you know,

just tossing her hair
all about,

like, she didn't really
come across

as someone fearful of outcomes.

And that seems to be
what she's still carrying,

that presumption that all
will turn out in her favor,

and that's someone
that's unwell.

That's complete disconnect
from what she's done.

Now to Lower Manhattan,
where the Ghislaine Maxwell

sex trafficking trial
is now in its 12th day.

Well, first of all, the defense
team for Ghislaine Maxwell,

they did not start off the
day today well at all,

the judge scolding them

for not having some of their
witnesses ready to testify.

Now, one of them is going to be
ignoring a federal subpoena,

another one has COVID,
another one is 81 years old,

lives in the UK
and cannot be here until Monday,

and then a fourth witness
who is scheduled to testify

is pleading the Fifth.

[Klasfeld]
The defense case rested
only two days in

in the trial
of Ghislaine Maxwell,

and usually
when asked whether or not

a criminal defendant
will testify in their defense,

it's yes or no.

Not Ghislaine Maxwell.
She said:

"Your Honor, the government
has not proven its case

beyond a reasonable doubt,

and so there is no need
for me to testify."

And that's the kind
of Ghislaine Maxwell

we've seen
throughout this trial.

Confident, relaxed,
awaiting a fate

that could see
the rest of her life in prison.

If she's feeling
any sense of panic over that,

she's not putting on a face
that would show that.

Breaking news in the Ghislaine
Maxwell trial.

She has been convicted.

[reporter 2]
She stood there stony-faced as
the jury read out the verdict.

When the jury filed out,

Ghislaine Maxwell
poured a glass of water,

hugged one of her lawyers and
was led out of the courtroom.

Ghislaine Maxwell just got
convicted

of five of six of the serious
counts against her,

including
the most serious counts,

sex trafficking of a minor,

which has
a possible maximum penalty

of 40 years imprisonment.

Mr. Maxwell, Mr. Maxwell,

can we have a statement
on behalf of the family, please?

What is your reaction
to the verdict?

We firmly believe
in Ghislaine's innocence.

Obviously we are very
disappointed with the verdict.

We have already started working
on the appeal.

Everyone, be healthy.
Have a happy new year.

It's a tremendous relief
to be here.

I- I, um, wasn't sure
that this day would ever come,

and uh, I just feel so grateful
that the jury believed us

and sent a strong message
that perpetrators

of sexual abuse and exploitation
will be held accountable,

no matter how much power
and privilege that they have.

I don't think
the verdict was a shock,

but I did find
it- it made me recoil.

Looking at Ghislaine Maxwell
striding around Oxford

all those years ago,

there was something
very attractive,

very engaging,
commanding about her,

and that did make her
someone you...

people wanted to know,
they enjoyed her company.

And yet those same attributes

were turned to... really
to something very, very wicked.

If you'd said to me
this is where

Ghislaine Maxwell will end up,

this is what you'd be
talking about today,

I'd have said, "That's crazy.
You've got the wrong person."

What Epstein did

is almost a microcosm

of how the world works,

of very rich and powerful people

exploiting people
without that wealth and power.

She was the facilitator
of that rapacity,

that predatory determination
to meet your needs

regardless of
anybody else's costs.

Maxwell did not do this
because Epstein told her to.

She did it in her- her own
agency, her own will.

She chose to perpetrate these
crimes against young victims,

and she benefited
from those crimes.

[Boies]
Epstein and Maxwell could not
have accomplished what they did

acting alone.

They could not have had
the scope and scale and duration

of the sexual trafficking
and abuse.

Their collaborators, their
enablers, their coconspirators

are all people who need to be
brought to justice.

The horrible heartache,

collective heartache,
of all of this.

For these two people

to have created
for so many people,

and then so many other people
off of that,

families and parents
and all the other things

that... that stem off of this,
you know, shame on you.

Shame on you, so...

And not on me.

I don't wish... harm.

However, she does not deserve
to be free.

I can only hope

that at some point

she admits to herself

what she's done,

'cause I don't think she has,

at this point... no.
