The ice is a hunting ground for seals and the polar bears

who like to feed on them.

And a favourite summer holiday spot for beluga whales,

unusual for being all white and having no dorsal fin.

It's really quite magical.

Your fifth check point is Manitoulin Island.

Facing the teams, a journey of over 3,000km

from the edge of the Arctic to the Great Lakes.

Situated in Lake Huron, the fifth checkpoint, Manitoulin Island -

the largest freshwater island on the planet.

So large it has over 100 inland lakes itself.

We've blown three quarters of the budget in half the race.

You know, we've purchased $1,000 on taxis.

It's just frightening.

Whichever way we look at it, it's down to Winnipeg.

You know, we can still be earning as we're going along.

So a bit of wonga.

Yeah, hopefully we'll be able to get some overnight travel.

Minimise the overnight spends, and we just try and make it

as seamless as possible.

I think we realise that we both have each other's best interests

at heart, but we obviously just need to work

on our communication.

I think we're getting there.

There's only one way out of Churchill -

the way the teams came in, a twice-weekly train.

The next one departs today at 7:30pm.

With some budgets tight

they'll need to dig deep to gain

any advantage over their rivals.

If we want to make it to the end, St John's, we can't spend

at the rate we've been spending, we need to make money.

Might mean, like, giving up speed, we can always make that up.

I think that's a fine idea, I ain't got any issues with that.

From a dad's perspective, I want to be in control...

After hundreds of kilometres of arctic tundra,

next stop, the city of Thompson and the start of the road network.

Alighting at Thompson,

there's only one route the teams can follow -

south to Winnipeg to pick up the Trans-Canada Highway east

into Ontario, then skirting

the Great Lakes to within touching

distance of the checkpoint.

We're going to get off at Thompson... Yeah.

..and then we're going to try and get a bus to Winnipeg.

I think that there will be other people that are trying to do exactly

the same as us,

so we don't know how we're going to get an edge on other people.

Let's think. There's always different ways of doing things.

The single gruelling stretch of highway that lies ahead

has limited transport options,

so each team will need ingenuity as well as stamina

to gain an advantage

in what could be the tightest leg so far.

We're approaching Thompson Station.

There's two buses down to Winnipeg. Mm-hm?

Leaving tonight at 10pm. Mm-hm.

We need to make sure that we can get on that bus.

We know about the bus leaving from Thompson,

so maybe we see if we can get out before the bus

leaves at ten. Yeah.

The only way to break away would be hitchhiking or by sharing.

So is the plan to get off and try and find a free shower somewhere

before another overnight bus?

Whatever keeps you in a good mood.

Living in Manitoba's northernmost city, Thompson's residents are used

to living up close with the boreal forest, beloved by grey wolves.

Thompson's bigger than I thought it was going to be.

Let's go and get some ham.

As attitudes to these endangered carnivores have changed from fear

to preservation, the city has been keen to claim the title

of wolf capital of the world.

We're hoping to buy some tickets for the bus to Winnipeg tonight.

They go every night at 10pm.

Expected arrival time in Winnipeg is around 7am.

Three teams make sure they are on the next available buses leaving

town for Winnipeg tonight.

And how much are they? They are $80 one way.

60, 80, 120, 140, 160.

It's good to know that we've got

a seat on the bus and we don't have to worry about that later.

And we're there for seven in the morning, which gives us a full day,

then, tomorrow to keep moving on, don't it?

so when our energy does come back and we're feeling a bit more rested,

then I think we'll be ready to push.

the highest of any city in Canada.

The moose is actually the first moose I have hunted myself,

something my ancestors have done forever.

After growing up Catholic, Grace began exploring her Cree heritage

in her 30s and now spreads that knowledge to others.

Because we have oral history, we don't write it down in books,

I'm trying to keep the culture alive. Yeah.

So much of the reason why I want to travel is to get

into the lives and into the houses of the locals, see how they live,

what their values and what their beliefs are.

I didn't grow up with hides all around me. I'm self-taught.

I grew up trying to be white.

That's 35 of my years.

I grew up afraid to speak my language, ashamed of being brown

I felt that cos we were born in the UK, but, obviously,

I'm just becoming very acutely aware of what our parents went through,

welcoming newly arrived refugees from the war in Ukraine.

But at times, I do think we are on two separate trips,

They always do.

You still need your dad at the end of the day. That's exactly it.

Your kids are always going to need you.

It's slow progress, but we are getting to know each other,

what makes each other tick and how we can support each other,

and I think that is a monumental moment, really, that we've survived

together, 24 hours a day, for nearly five weeks.

So I think we deserve an award just for that,

to be honest, not tearing each other apart.

It's just lovely to be here.

I've just got the most spectacular view.

Anyone could wander round in the morning with a cup of coffee.

I'm thinking now maybe when we go home, Claudia will be asking me

if we can go fishing.

Slowly but surely, we are starting to put things into a bit

of perspective, I think.
