is, I mean, it's two-fold, really.

So they're doing the launch of
their new car and I'm hosting that.

From what I understand,
it's quite a big launch.

They're making a big deal of it,
but we're also there as The Cog.

They've got this car
that we might do for them. Yeah.

The first ever Morgan Aero 8.
What's also cool is that you've had

20-odd years working there,
you know the company, the people.

So, Jamie, you are
our secret weapon.

And when we get there, we're gonna
meet another secret weapon. Zog.

He's more of a tool. (LAUGHS)
A secret tool.

Morgan are one of the few remaining
British car manufacturers.

They've been making cars by hand
in their Malvern factory since 1909.

And before he came to us,
Jamie worked here for 19 years.

a really special car

in the history of Morgan.

It was our first ever flagship.

It's in a little bit of a state
of disrepair.

So this was the car, in the year
2000, that launched... This was,

like, a new Morgan. We want to,
yeah, we want to restore it.

but there's quite a bit of pressure.

So how it looks is everything

and how it looks at the launch of
the new car is critical.

I trust Jamie with this one,
because he knows the cars,

but he needs to be on his toes,

because he hasn't just
got to finish it on time.

He's gonna finish it on time
and to perfection.

RICHARD: Getting that Morgan job is
a real coup.

So I want to celebrate with my mate
Hadrian, The Cog's landlord,

who runs a big engineering business
next door to our workshop.

That is, if I can drag him away from
his beloved steam engines.

The job is absolutely tremendous.

Since joining The Cog, it's been
a massive learning curve for me.

Every car is slightly different.

Your Ferraris, Aston Martins, MGs.

E-Type Jags, I've got no experience
at all with them,

so it's really difficult to make
an estimate for these cars.

On a Morgan, I know them inside out,
so I can do a perfect estimate,

to the hour,
how long this should take us.

So we've got to strip the car.

This will take one person
around three days to do.

We will then go into the prep
and prime stage.

I'm estimating 30 hours
for this one.

Any imperfections or inclusions
in the paintwork will be flattened

and polished out,
so I'm confident with this job.

It's gonna be tight with the
timeframe. As it's a prototype,

it can throw up a few curveballs,
but we'll just have to wait and see.

How much of your life is
spent on, like,

business stuff then,
as opposed to...

What, now? Now it's as big as it is.

I mean, I live in my ivory tower.
I used to be on the shop floor.

It was heaven, you know, like,
getting dirty and messing about.

You know? In the workshop,
making nice things.

And do you not do that anymore?

So today we're gonna fit
the new front splitter.

The challenge is the one
they've sent us is actually

the one that went into production.

As you can see,
if I put them both together,

it's not the same as this one,

because this was a prototype,
it's all fibreglass,

so I don't think that's gonna fit.

We're gonna have to repair
the old one by the looks of it.

(SIGHS) That's a lot of work.

You know, we've got...

a really small window
to get this ready for the launch.

It's just put
a bit more pressure on us.

No time like the present. Get it in
and get it started straightaway.

What I'm doing at the moment, I'm
just making some little brackets.

So where the crack is,
we're gonna put that

and screw it in, so it's gonna hold
the crack in place.

We're gonna re-fibreglass all that
to make it absolutely solid.

Then we'll take the plates off
the back where I've just screwed in

the fibreglass front
and you'll never know.

someone else paint a Morgan.

The way he sprays it is
slightly different

to the way I start and finish a job,

because I've painted thousands
in my time.

being ahead of schedule on a job,

I might be forgiven
for thinking that all is on the up,

but I've got
a nagging feeling it isn't.

the rebuild.

Jamie took it in with
a £20,000 budget.

about 250 hours,

but I think Anthony is
already about 50 hours in.

This doesn't really look like
a simple rebuild to me.

when we took this job on,

rebuilding an E-Type,

instead of coal,

it actually burns petrol
to heat the water

to make the steam to power it.

What we've got to do, we've got
to aim this in through here.

light has got to get hot enough,

so that when we introduce
pressurised petrol, it comes through

these two nozzles here...

Yes. ...into the bottom of
the boiler and it then ignites.

but this is all filled over,
which it shouldn't be,

where the seams are for the sills
and the little drains are missing.

The reality is everything needs
restoring and rebuilding.

There's a lot of work to do.
All the brake cylinders are rusted,

when you look at them,
the wheel cylinders and things.

They're hundreds of pounds each,
so you could quite easily spend

well in excess of £10,000,

just on parts to turn that
into a running, driving car.

Here's what I thought
when it came to us. Yeah?

I thought, "Well, that's basically
a kit car, isn't it?"

All the bits are there. Yeah.
£20,000 to just bolt it together.

It's an older restoration
on the bodywork,

so there's quite a lot of concern.

what problems you might find,
at about 1,200 hours, I would guess.

So we're looking at...

You always build in a bit of
wriggle room in an estimate,

because it might end up
costing more,

I'm worried that that can happen
in the first place,

looking over your car.

He knows every millimetre of
those cars. So, the first thing is,

in his opinion, and I value that,

£20,000 ain't gonna get
that car built.

The second headline is,

the realistic value is somewhere...

if it's done really well,
between 80 and 100.

Right. The problem is you could
easily end up spending that

getting it ready.

The restoration work
that was done on the body,

there's a few key things
that weren't done right.

The sills should be spot-welded on,
with little drainage holes.

There are parts missing.
I don't know what we've got.

The parts list?
Yeah, we're up to,

at the moment, the parts alone,

you're looking at about £8,000.

It's going to take
a lot of commitment to get it there

and that isn't gonna be reflected in

the value of the car,
at the end of the day.

And I can't give it to you any
straighter than that. Okay. Right.

I wish I could say we'll...

an estimate for the job?

We didn't really have an estimate.

He had so much to spend. I said,
"Is everything with the car?"

He said, "Yes, literally,
just bolt it back together",

which seemed OK.

As we know, it wasn't.

And I guess that...

I'm gonna say that should have been
the first red flag.

We spent a lot of time figuring out
what was actually missing.

But, by then, we were into it.

Mmm-hmm.
We'd spent hours,

which we had to charge back to
the customer,

knowing that what we're not
gonna be able to do is the job

the customer wanted doing.
No, exactly.

We also hadn't photographed it,
as we should have done.

I'm worried.

I think we've had enough...

I'm worried reputationally.
Yeah.

I do worry, sometimes,
we're taking the wrong things on.

Yeah. That's what's bitten us a bit
over the last few months.

I feel tremendously loyal
to Jamie. I think...

he works hard,

but we are dropping
the ball occasionally.

The E-Type needed a bit more
thought. It needed someone

to take a step back
and go, "Oh, hang on."

What we need to do is look ahead
and see those mistakes coming

and avoid them.

There's no varnishing it.
We all screwed up on that E-Type.

We've underestimated jobs
in the past.

I thought we'd got over that,
but we obviously haven't.

I've tried everything to solve this.

So far, I've had
consultants come in.

I've had specialists.
I've tried computer programmes.

So I'm gonna go and talk to my mum,

about her, maybe, coming in
and helping.

It's not a mad idea.

She's run businesses herself.

She's run national charities.

She does organisation.
