I don't know how she did that overnight,

It was my dream to go
to one of those American theater schools,

but the reality was
I used to go to dancing classes

in a village hall in Hertfordshire.

I used to enjoy the sense of escapism.

You become someone else.

I was definitely a loner at school.

I was bullied. I was awkward.
I wasn't particularly sociable.

I just didn't fit in, at all.

But when you're on stage,

for that moment, you're somebody else,

and I didn't really wanna be me.
I didn't like me.

I desperately wanted to be liked.

I'd never thought about
being in a pop group.

And then all of a sudden,
there was an audition. "Girl band."

I'm Victoria Adams, I'm 19 years old,
and I'm from Hertfordshire.

We had to sing a song.

So of course, everybody else was singing
Madonna or Whitney Houston.

You know, pop songs.

I think I'm more eccentric
than I ever really realized.

Either that or I'm batshit crazy.

We're all working hard,

and Top of the Pops and things like that.

They made me more lighthearted, more fun.

It was the first time
that I ever felt that I belonged.

All of a sudden, I was popular.

The big fashion houses build environments

in which they are going to show
their collections,

and this is the first time
that I'm doing that.

Paris is the biggest stage that there is.

You get the most press,
you get the most attention,

you get the most buyers,
you get the most of everything in Paris.

It's just the city

Paris makes me up my game.

this molded detail,

if we wanted to, for show?

This season is about dressing,

how we all pull out clothes
from our wardrobe

and try them on and play with them.

And we've created garments
that have been made out of resin,

so we can drape fabrics over the resin,

freeze-framing movement.

But, then, the resin
is experimental for us.

I think it's incredibly difficult
to make a mark

during Paris Fashion Week
or any of the fashion weeks

because fashion is so saturated.

We're so bombarded with stuff.

Only a certain amount
will rise to the top.

I've always wanted to do this.

Throughout my life,
I've used clothes to become someone else,

be the person that I always wanted to be

that maybe, naturally, I wasn't.

I used to customize the school uniform
in the bathroom at lunchtime.

I used to love watching my mum
get dressed up.

You know, she really cared
and made the best of herself.

I remember my mum saying to me,

"If you dress up to get on the aeroplane,

if there's any chance of being upgraded,

they're always gonna look at
who looks the best."

The truth is that there is no first class
on budget airlines.

But, you know,
my mum did not wear designer clothes.

There was not fashion magazines around
when I was younger.

And then the Spice Girls
took the blinkers off.

Here we are, in New York.

Look at the taxi.
That proves we're in New York.

Pretty early on,
we were working with great stylists,

amazing makeup artists,

and I learned so much.

The other girls
weren't really into fashion.

That left a really nice budget for me.

We get this budget to get clothes.
You know what I end up getting?

A £20 thing from Oxfam, and that's it.

She nicks all my money.

What did you do
with all the Spice Girls' clothing budget?

I went to Gucci.

I'd never ever owned
a designer garment before,

and so this was so new, so exciting.

If you do put on the perfect dress
and it does make you feel a certain way…

You know, that confidence, that feeling
was something I wasn't used to.

Fashion became everything.

And I was so excited
to be invited to a fashion show.

I'd never been to a fashion show before.

I met Victoria in 1997.

My daughter, she was obsessed
with the Spice Girls. I mean, obsessed.

I got invited to go
to the Versace show by Donatella.

They got a private plane,
for me, to Milan.

I'm like, "Well, what's the catch?"

"No, you can get whatever you want."
I couldn't… I couldn't believe it.

I selected a black leather dress,

and I remember trying on the dress,
looking in the mirror,

Basically, redesigned the whole dress.

I really can't believe I did that.

Then I realized it was better on her
the way she did it.

Up until this point,
everything that I did,

I did with the Spice Girls.

So this was the first time
it was about me.

I could've dreamt of and so much more.

The celebrities.

The energy was incredible.

And that is contagious.

That's where I got the bug.

I had such problematic skin.

I remember times
when I wouldn't even have the confidence

to look someone in the eye.

I suppose I used it as a mask.

Since before I can remember,
I was collecting products that I liked,

products that had been discontinued,

little samples of lipsticks
that makeup artists had mixed for me

because we couldn't find
the perfect color.

What we really like
about this pencil is that it's not white.

I want something that's whiter than that.

I was wearing the white one in my eye,
and David said I looked like a lunatic.

And now, with my beauty business,

I can obsess over everything.

What we're figuring out
is if it's going to come filled or not.

I don't think that anyone would buy it
without anything in it.

It would be done nicely.
Think of it as like a makeup bag.

I think it either has to come with brushes
or not at all

because I don't think

I was a bit upset,

and, actually, I did start crying.

They're best buds. They can't
stay together for a couple years?

When the Spice Girls finished,
it was so extreme.

One minute,
I'm spreading the word of girl power.

And then the next minute,
I'm a wife in a flat in Manchester,

not really having any friends,
living a long way away from my family.

And I found that transition
really, really difficult.

Fireworks for an explosive team.

My life didn't change

because I continued on with my career,
and I continued to do what I loved.

But it all changed for her,
and I think that was…

At the time, I didn't realize
how hard that was for her.

I felt so blessed to be married to David.

I had this amazing relationship,
this amazing little baby,

but it felt quite slow.

and do a photoshoot again?"

And I just kept thinking,
"What am I gonna do?"

But when people are mean,

and you're hearing things

and wife Victoria,

better known as Posh Spice to some,

flew into LA Thursday.

Waiting for the latest "it" couple,

a horde of press and photographers.

The minute that we landed in America,

it felt like a fresh start.

It was like we escaped.

You're a million miles away

from whatever anybody
might be saying about you.

Clearly she is famous.
People are saying she's not that famous.

Victoria Beckham has found
her spiritual home.

A land of size-zero beach bodies,
and Botox.

Even if they were saying horrible things
in the UK, I wasn't really aware of it.

I was in the sunshine.
I was hiking with my kids.

-Daddy, say "action."
-Action.

-Action.
-No! Mummy!

As much as we'd moved to LA for my career,

the focus was less on me,

and it gave her confidence.

A lot more than she'd had for a long time.

We were so happy in America.

Goal!

The kids were little.
We found great schools for the children.

And I just decided it was time

to really focus on what I want as well.

I think she had an epiphany.

Victoria!

She started trying to define,
for herself, who she wanted to be,

and what she could do,
and what was possible.

I realized it's okay
to want more for yourself.

I wanted to really have
this creative outlet.

I wanted to work in fashion.

Marc Jacobs, he is a designer
that I have so much respect for.

I went to his show in 2007,

and afterwards, he wrote me a letter

asking me to be in his campaign,

shot by Juergen Teller.

She suddenly appeared in the front row
of a Marc Jacobs fashion show,

and, uh, everybody said,
"Oh my God, there's Victoria Beckham."

"What is she doing here?"

In the night, Marc called me up and says,

"What do you think about
using Victoria Beckham for the campaign?"

I was very excited to… to do the shoot.

We always had people,

like, who we deeply admired
in what they artistically did,

whether it was Kim Gordon
or Charlotte Rampling,

these so-called cool people.

So when I talked to my team,

they thought, "Oh my God,
she doesn't fit at all in this."

"Why are you doing this?
That's completely wrong."

She was, at the time,

probably the most-photographed woman
in the world.

I thought, "How am I gonna do this?"

And everybody…
everybody in the industry's opinion

was that she was always
in these paparazzi pictures

and always so kind of grumpy and serious
and didn't have a sense of humor.

And I thought, "Hmm.
This is something I could think about."

"What are we selling here?"

When I first saw those pictures,

I was horrified.

It was very much poking fun at me.

And that's when I realized
I was a laughingstock.

No one took me seriously in this industry.

I knew I wanted to be a designer,
I knew I had a point of view,

but I also knew
that I needed someone to believe in me.

It's Roland Mouret.

This is Roland Mouret.

I loved what he did.

I loved his designs.

At that time, it was my dream
to be in the fashion industry,

but I knew that I knew nothing.

We had a manager in common.

And that's how I first met Roland.

They asked me, "Victoria has that dream,

of fashion."

"And she would like…
to talk to people about that dream."

And… And I just accepted to meet her.

I was going to meet
the WAG first. I knew that.

She's labeled herself in that group.

She was not anymore a Spice Girl.

I listened to her story,
and she say her story.

She want… She wanted fashion.

But she wanted something specific,
but she thought it has to go through fame.

For success, be visible.

Two things that you need
to become successful in your dreams is,

first, you need to have an ego,

and after, you need to have modesty.

You need to have the modesty
to accept the reality,

to accept that the team around you
that's going to work with you,

you have to respect them
because without them, you're nothing.

You will have to learn.

You will have to pick up pins
on the floor.

And when she told me her story,
I could see that,

yeah, she has an ego,
she's Victoria Beckham.

Is she ready to accept the dream… she has?

Roland saw something, I don't know what.

But we connected, and he believed in me.

He was very, very honest,

and he was really, really tough.

Why do we want to become recognized?

What is that need?

Most of the time,
it's coming from a moment in your life,

maybe because you've been bullied.

You think and you feel you're disappearing
or you could disappear,

that you have to do everything to be seen.

And I recognized that in Victoria.

Everything was so here,

It was on the edge of her skin,
that anxiety that make her…

Her choice was to control,
control, control, control.

Control her weight,
control her skin, control her image.

I said, "If you want to be
in that industry,

you have to become genuine."

He didn't care
if I liked what he said or not, you know?

He just said it.

In the magazine, that's Victoria Beckham.

You need to be Victoria.

The enemy was fear.

And lack of self-esteem.
That was the enemy.

I said, to make the dream become reality,

we had to kill the WAG.
