Engineers prepare a submersible craft

For an undersea oil pipe inspection.

Their mission... To
Check every inch of pipe

For possible damage.

The remote sub's powerful lights

Cut through the inky black waters.

At first, there's nothing
Out of the ordinary.

But then the sub reaches a
Depth of 5,000 feet and stops dead.

Something ambushes the r.O.V.

And then disappears into the darkness.

The onboard camera
Searches for another glimpse.

It appears again,

An alien-like form
Drifting in and out of view.

And then it's gone.

Looking for answers,

The dive company posts the footage online.

There's a lot of things
That can live down there,

But I've never seen
Anything like this before.

I had no idea what it was.

I couldn't even tell if it was a creature,

If it was something that was alive.

Or even some kind of alien.

Narrator: many believe a monster
From the deep has awakened.

Legends of monsters
Associated with the seas

Go back many years, and,
Of course, when looking

At this, you got to ask
Yourself, "Could this be

One of those type creatures?"

Narrator: the most infamous
Creature in marine folklore

Is the kraken.

Sailors said it was huge.

It would come up out of the
Water and engulf the ships.

Now, today, we can look
At the giant squid and say

That's a possible explanation
For what they were describing.

Lyle blackburn is certain

This monster is no giant squid.

He searches further back in the records

For other deep-sea monsters.

We have fossil records
Of huge aquatic creatures,

Such as a plesiosaur.

It makes you wonder if
The creature in this footage

Is perhaps an ancient killing machine

That has survived all
These years in the depths.

Narrator: it's not the first time
Scientists have discovered

A prehistoric creature still living.

Kays: the coelacanth was
This famous fossil of this fish

That was thought to be long extinct.

And then they found it alive

Swimming in the deep, deep ocean.

Narrator: yet this mysterious
Entity looks nothing like

Any ancient fish.

Biologist roland kays spots
Something about its structure

That leads him to propose it
May not even be a complete animal,

But some kind of tissue.

Given its color and size,
Could it be the placenta

From a whale that's now floating
Down to the bottom of the ocean?

Suspects that may be a plausible theory.

But if it is some kind of
Dead tissue, ryan is baffled

By its lifelike movement.

Ryan: in the deep sea,
It's relatively stagnant.

Things down there are
Just kind of floating by.

So for something to be really
Actively moving is surprising.

May be playing a role.

He prepares a test to
See if he can replicate

The rippling movement.

A blanket doubles up
As the mysterious entity

In the surveillance footage.

Without a current,

This thing is kind of just
Suspended in the water.

But maybe the submersible is
Actually generating those waves.

As I turn on this engine
And get this propeller going

And create a flow, this inert object,

This blanket starts undulating
Like the thing in the video.

So maybe this is really
Just a blob of tissue.

Narrator: marine biologist jon copley,

From the university of
Southampton, england,

Highlights a problem
With the tissue theory.

Copley: something like
This, this deep in the ocean,

If it were tissue, it would be scavenged.

It would be eaten by the
Deep-sea life pretty quickly.

Narrator: copley believes
This thing must be alive,

But he's not sure what it is

Or if it's dangerous.

Copley takes a different approach

To unlocking the mystery.

He believes the depth at which

The r.O.V. Is operating holds clues.

At this depth, we're at 150 times

The atmospheric pressure
Surrounding us right now,

So it's 75 times the
Pressure in your car tire.

We have to consider what kind of animals

Could live at this depth and
Have this strange rippling form.

Narrator: to identify what form
Of creature the undulating mass

In the video could be,
Copley re-creates the effects

Of extreme pressure on
Different types of cell structures.

First, he seals a styrofoam cup in water.

But, of course, this
Has got a lot of air in it,

Like a lot of creatures do.

Narrator: next, something
With no air inside it...

A cup of jello.

Copley encases the samples in
A reinforced pressure chamber.

The compressor goes to work.

Slowly the pressure
Builds inside the chamber,

Until its contents are
Under the same pressure

They would be 5,000 feet
Below the surface of the ocean.

Copley: now, here's our
Polystyrene coffee cup.

It's less than half the size
It was when we put it in there.

So all of the air that
Was in it has been squashed,

Squeezed by the pressure.

So for an animal that has
Air inside its body, like us,

That would be a grisly fate waiting for us

At the bottom of the ocean.

Narrator: the jello tells a
Completely different story.

Despite being subjected
To immense pressure,

There's no sign of any damage.

That's because there's no air
In that jello, so there's nothing

For the pressure to
Squeeze and make smaller.

So any animals that don't
Have air inside them could live

Quite happily at the bottom of the ocean.

Narrator: copley believes the
Animal's shape and the depth

At which it was found narrows
The field of possible species.

Copley: so, looking at
That, it's entirely possible

That it could be an animal that
Doesn't have any air inside it,

Like jellyfish.

Narrator: scientists estimate
There could be around

6,000 species of jellyfish.

They range from the common moon jelly

To the giant lion's mane jellyfish,

With tentacles stretching over 100 feet

And armed with deadly stingers.

But ryan notices that the
One feature they all share

Appears to be missing
In the r.O.V. Footage.

On a true jelly, you'll
See this bell that has a nice,

Rounded edge.

But on this animal, there's
No clear rounded bell.

This doesn't look like any jellyfish.

What is it?

You're half expecting godzilla,

Right, to come out from behind it.

Discover the identity

Of the mysterious
Creature haunting the deep.

I'm constantly amazed at what
Evolution can come up with.

Deep-sea jellyfish is captured

On an r.O.V. Camera 5,000
Feet below the ocean surface.

Detailed examination of the
Footage reveals the creature

Is much bigger than scientists
Usually find at this depth.

A lot of deep ocean life
Is actually pretty small.

So giants in the deep ocean are rare.

He detects a faint and unusual
Pattern on the creature.

That pattern on its surface,
The sort of hexagons,

The branching pattern across its surface,

Looks like a very
Special deep-sea jellyfish

Whose scientific name is deepstaria.

Creatures on earth.

First discovered in 1960,

This is only the second
Time it's been filmed.

With this new evidence,

Scientists can at last learn more about it.

Most jellyfish pulse through
The water to move oxygen

And nutrients around their bodies.

But not this type.

Instead, scientists
Believe the hexagonal mesh

Acts as its circulatory system.

We're used to seeing
Jellyfish that kind of pulsate

Through the water column,

And this thing is not doing that at all.

It's really just flowing.

It just kind of floats around
Like this big, open-ended sack.

You've got to wonder
How does this thing eat.

Narrator: instead of catching
Its prey with tentacles,

Marine biologists
Believe this floating sheet

Envelops its victims using

Its entire body as a chamber of death.

Copley: you can think of it as

Really kind of an ambush predator.

It's not chasing after prey.

It's waiting for prey to
Come close and bump into it,

Catch them, and then swallow them.

Narrator: this bizarre
Creature is just one of many

Seemingly alien life-forms
That lurk out of sight

Deep beneath the ocean waves.

There are many more down
There, waiting to be discovered.

Most of our planet is dark, deep ocean,

And creatures like this are
The real inhabitants of earth.

Monitor the city streets.

At 1:58 p.M., the peace shatters.

The force of this explosion
Is so strong that not only

Does it move the trash dumpsters,

But it also sends earth
Flying through the air

And literally blowing out
The windows of these vehicles

That are parked on this street.

Narrator: remarkably,
There are no fatalities.

Shell-shocked locals are lucky to be alive.

The blast tears apart the parking lot,

Leaving a 20-foot crater.

It's so shocking and so violent.

You just wonder, what could it be?

He is greeted by terror and confusion.

When he demands answers from authorities,

He is met with a wall of silence.

Signs of terrorism.

When I see an image like this,

The first thing I think
Of is a roadside bomb.

This is the kind of thing we
See out of iraq or afghanistan.

Just 400 miles away, on its eastern border,

The country is fighting
For its very survival.

The ukraine has been a site of
Not just unrest but insurgency,

Ongoing tensions with russia.

That the rebels have escalated

And are now targeting the capital.

This could be an
Improvised explosive device,

Will then cause this explosion.

Insurgents have carried out

A wave of assassinations
Using similar terror tactics.

In 2017, the head of ukraine intelligence

Is killed in a car-bomb attack.

If this was an I.E.D...

...You have to consider
Who was the intended target.

Over the west coast.

It's not implausible to rule out
This explosion was the result

Of a test launch by north korea.

Investigation in kiev points to

An explosive force beneath the streets.

You don't know when and
Where they're going to occur,

And when they do, they can be deadly.

Whatever caused the blast had enough force

To lift the road 15 feet into the air

And blows concrete and
Rubble seven stories high.

But if it's an I.E.D., the security footage

Fails to reveal the key
Signature of such an attack.

What makes this "Explosion" so different

Is that there's no fire.

There's no explosive force
That we would see in a bomb.

Considers a very different theory.

When I see this, the
First thing that I think is

Maybe it's an earthquake.

When you look at the video,
The whole bulging of the earth,

Well, an earthquake can
Cause the ground to roll

And shake and move.

A place like ukraine, they
Can have earthquakes.

They do have earthquakes.

Narrator: as recently as
2015, a 4.4-magnitude quake

Rattled the city of poltava,
Just 180 miles away from kiev.

Because they don't happen quite as often,

You don't know when and
Where they're going to occur,

And when they do, they can be deadly.

Narrator: but more detailed
Analysis of the security video

Raises doubts that an
Earthquake is behind the blast.

Sella: there's something odd
About it because if there were

An earthquake sufficient to cause that much

Kind of deformation and
Movement, you would think

That the woman who is
Walking along the sidewalk

Would feel it.

Instead she seems quite unaware of it

Until suddenly the whole thing erupts.

And I think it's important
To notice that the camera

Really stays very, very steady.

There's none of the shaking
That you might anticipate if,

In fact, this was a major quake.

This is clearly something very localized.

Narrator: when civil engineer
Brian wolshon gets access

To more camera angles, he spots evidence

That hints at another possible cause.

Wolshon: when we look at this
Event from a different angle,

We see that this explosion
Is followed by a torrent

Of water and mud.

The presence of water after this explosion

Leads me to believe that a likely cause

Of this explosion is probably a water main.

Narrator: yet water mains leak.

They don't usually explode.

Further investigation reveals,
At the time of the explosion,

Some water pipes in the area

Are undergoing extensive pressure testing.

Pressure testing is when we
Increase the internal pressure

Within that pipe to make
Sure that there are no leaks.

Investigates if a weak pipe

Could've been responsible for the blast

By building a small-scale model in her lab.

At the bottom of this
Barrel, I have a broken pipe.

It's covered with sand.

We're gonna pipe high-pressure
Water through our broken pipe,

And we're gonna see what happens.

Grows, the water molecules

Inside the pipe are
Squeezed tighter and tighter,

Creating a tremendous
Amount of potential energy.

At 600 psi, the pipe has
A catastrophic failure.

The ground bulged up and then exploded,

Releasing the pressure of the water below.

It has earth-shattering consequences.

...Ghostly lights hover over the landscape.

Erratically above the treetops

Before vanishing as quickly as they appear.

Man: what the hell was that?

Narrator: footage of these lights is rare,

And eyewitness accounts vary.

Several people that I
Know have seen the lights.

They describe them as globes
Of light, reds and purples.

Observers describe them
As floating balls about, say,

The size of a soccer ball.

Meteor showers...

Unusual lights in the sky being meteors

Is certainly a possibility.

These stories of strange

Could be gas igniting.

Warriors wandering the mountain.

By these tales of supernatural visions.

I have kind of a belief that you
Should not just poo-poo claims

Of extraordinary things
But investigate them.

Narrator: the trouble is, there
Are many different descriptions

Of the lights and very
Little hard evidence.

Everybody is seeing something different,

And so we need to look
At all of those possibilities.

Narrator: first, caton needs
Something tangible to study.

Together with his colleague lee hawkins,

He sets up 24/7 surveillance
Of the mountain range.

I decided let's get some
Equipment and try to go out

And get some images of them.

And those two cameras give
Us a view of brown mountain

And the area over brown mountain.

These cameras are taking
30-second time exposures.

We build those into a video.

Narrator: the cameras record
Continuously for two years.

We've taken well over a
Million images of this site.

Narrator: but they fail
To capture any signs

Of the mysterious lights.

We like to call ourselves
The world's experts

On not seeing the brown mountain lights.

Caton: I got really cynical about it.

I was just very pessimistic
That they existed at all.

Narrator: but caton and
Hawkins refuse to give up.

On july 15, 2016,

Their perseverance is rewarded.

The cameras finally
Capture something unusual,

Not once, but four times.

Caton: we've been making
These videos for a few years.

Here it was. It was exciting.

Narrator: their discovery
Only deepens the mystery

Because unlike previous sightings,

This light appears high in the sky.

When I saw this, I was really surprised.

I don't know what it was.

This is not how people describe
The brown mountain lights

When they describe things they've seen.

Narrator: when caton analyzes the footage,

He calculates the
Mysterious lights are hovering

Around the same height
As a 70-story building.

This brand-new data casts
Doubt on a long-held theory

For the origin of the lights...

The rare and mysterious phenomenon

Known as will o'the wisp.

Will o'the wisp gas is where
You have pockets of like methane,

Which is a natural gas,
That are given off in swamps,

And they can ignite, and
You get these flames.

Clouds of gas that can move around.

Narrator: a geological survey
Of the brown mountain

Confirms the presence of methane.

Caton: it's true there are
Some marshes on the mountain,

And our team has sent people up there

And captured a little bit of gas.

Swamp gas could create lights

To me, that doesn't fit
In any way with the usual

Kind of swamp gas type of explanation.

Those things are always highly localized,

And they happen very close to the ground.

About the mysterious sightings.

People have proposed that
The brown mountain lights

Are any number of
Things, including meteors.

Lester: meteors tend
To be a flash of light.

Objects pass through earth's
Atmosphere and get heated

To extreme temperatures,
And those do give off light.

Narrator: meteors enter
The earth's atmosphere

At speeds around 30,000 miles an hour.

The friction turns these plummeting rocks

Into glowing fireballs.

But when astronomer vivian white examines

The surveillance footage,
She spots a problem

With the white-hot orbs.

They don't have a streak
That runs with them.

They kind of flash on and off.

I can tell you for sure
That that is not any meteor

That I've ever seen.

Narrator: it seems the
Surveillance footage can only

Take the scientific investigation so far.

In the search for a new lead,

Caton and hawkins revisit
The eyewitness accounts.

Man: I got a blue light.

There it is, there it is, there it is. Ooh!

Caton: there's a wide variety of reports

As to what they look like.

Man: it's showing up on night vision blue.

What the hell is that?

Narrator: the sightings
Have one thing in common.

They're all colorful lights

That appear and sometimes change colors.

Something is going on.

Narrator: caton and
Hawkins have a radical idea.

My theory is that the brown mountain lights

Are ball lightning.

Ball lightning is a natural phenomenon

That's been reported for over a century.

This is ball-size lumps of
Light that suddenly appear.

Narrator: ball lightning is
Thought to be a rare form

Of plasma created when
Electricity ionizes a gas.

It's what we see with neon lights.

Here in the lab, we can demonstrate this

Pretty easily with this device here.

When I turn this on,
Current will flow through

This tube of neon, and
As it flows through that,

It will excite the gas.

It will make the electrons
Give off a reddish light.

Narrator: other gases also create plasmas

But vary in color.

Argon glows purple,
And krypton a bright white.

This may explain why the
Brown mountain lights

Are reported as different colors.

But even caton admits there
Is a problem with his theory.

This is easy to do in a glass tube.

But how does nature do it in a lump of gas?

Does it just naturally dissipate?

How do you do that?

That's difficult physics
We don't know how to do.

Narrator: until scientists can
Decipher nature's mechanism

For producing ball lightning,

The brown mountain lights
Will remain unexplained.

There is a serious hope in the community

That they never discover it,
That the legends will prevail.

And you've got to admit,
Sometimes you just need

A little mystery in your life.

Car and heads into the wild.

Bella: this is absolutely special.

We're surrounded by
Wilderness in every direction.

Go 15 miles outside of town,

You get the darkest skies you can imagine.

Cosmos to reveal its magic.

Every astrophotographer hopes
To get that shot that has an event,

Stellar events, cosmic
Events in our universe.

A night like this, these
Clouds are gonna clear up.

The milky way is gonna come out.

It's gonna be incredible
One way or another.

A long night of stargazing.

At dawn, he finishes his filming.

But when he reviews his recordings,

He can't believe his eyes.

Bella: so, when I first
Started watching them load

On the screen, I saw this
Light start to show up.

Narrator: it's not the stunning
Cosmos that grabs his attention

But a strange, colorful explosion.

I've never seen anything quite like this.

I saw the progression of
The light grow and grow

And grow and then shrink.

My first reaction is kind of odd
Then wonder what was going on.

Narrator: but bella's awe
Quickly turns to fear.

His camera is pointing to the southeast.

Bella: when I saw this blast of light,

I thought maybe there was
An incident over los alamos.

You know, it's a nuclear lab,

So who knows what's going on over there.

Narrator: just 50 miles
Away lies the top secret

Government facility,
Los alamos national lab,

The birthplace of the atomic bomb.

It was here the manhattan
Project was carried out.

In 1945, scientists
Create a doomsday device

With the explosive
Power of 20,000 tons of tnt.

The detonation creates a mushroom cloud

Extending 40,000 feet into the air.

Los alamos is still the country's

Primary nuclear weapons research facility.

Seeing this kind of
Explosion take place in an area

Like this is, quite frankly, alarming.
