- I think I got some
attention for some work

that didn't really deserve it at an age

when I had a hard time handling it,

and it wasn't a whole lot of attention

but it seemed like a whole lot

to, you know, a library
weenie from the lower level

of Frost Library in Amherst College,

and I had a hard time with it.

And I was lucky enough to have
a really hard time with it,

at an age early enough so that there was

something left of my
life when it was over.

(mumbles)

If you wanted something
really exciting or sexy,

there really isn't much, I
just got really unhappy--

- [Voiceover] But you,
I mean, it was drugs

and you were suicidal and--

(tape squeaks)

- That wasn't the
problem, the problem was,

I started out, I think,
wanting to be a writer

and wanting to get some attention,

and I got it really quick--

- [Voiceover] By writing.

- And realized it didn't
make me happy at all,

in which case, hmm, wanting my writing.

(tape squeaks)

- I think, I think it's too Wolfman.

Coloring-wise, will this work?

- [Director] Like this is Wolfman,

and we're not making a wolfman movie,

we're making a werewolf movie.

because she's never done this before

and I don't want her freak out

about having foam on her face.

- [Makeup Artist] You've
never had this done?

- [Director] It's not a big deal.

- [Makeup Artist] It'll be really easy,

we'll fly right through it.

- [Makeup Artist] Today's
doesn't have nose holes,

but I guarantee you'll definitely have

a lot more breathing room.

(movie camera whirring)

Yeah, that was good.

It's hard for them to visualize it now,

but I think it's gonna make sense.

Like I think you and I
are on the same page--

- [Makeup Artist] Yeah, yeah, definitely.

- [Director] And I think, like, here,

hold this up to your face.

Because since June is the older version,

the design should be similar

but I think it needs
to be, like, droopier,

like the cheekbones could come down some.

- [Director] I mean, I don't know

if it's a huge pain in the ass.

because if on Claire you build it up

and she's more this, like, young, like,

has to be a difference

in the older version of her.

Casting is always such
a frustrating experience

because nine times out of 10,

you're only seeing the
people that you don't want.

- [Casting Director] Bye.

- So, that's like I'd seen so many people

and then you showed up and it was like,

okay, well this is over with.

And it was like, congrats, moving on, so.

Is your voice all right, screaming?

- Yeah, it's holding up.

- Do you get embarrassed, yelling?

- Sure, yeah.

- I can't raise my voice.

- Really?

- It feels phony.

- In real life?

- Yeah.

When I yell it just, it raises,

it just sounds like I'm joking.

I don't have a good yell voice.

- I understand that too.

What do you do when you get mad?

Oh, you get quiet, that's really scary.

- Yeah, that's true.

- That's way scarier.

- Serial killer.

But that's because I didn't grow up

in a family where people
yell at each other.

That's the difference.

- I did.

- But I do get quiet, yeah.

- Quiet's very creepy.

And basically, it's just kind of like what

we did the other day, but
Ben's gonna take you through

- Yeah, I mean we're just gonna do

what you planned on coming in doing,

I'm just gonna kind of shoot
some stuff so I have it.

I don't wanna give you any
thoughts on this first one,

just do whatever you were planning,

and then maybe we'll tweak it,

try some different things.

Just give me two seconds
to get focused here.

- You've had years and
years to just tell me

that this might happen to me
and you never said anything.

That's how I feel.

I mean, like, it feels
silly to agree with that,

but it's really,
truthfully, pretty close to

how I feel these days.

- Yeah, well, you're frustrated with...

the movies that I'm making.

when I read this I am.

When I think about what we just made,

and I think about the ideas that we had

when we went into it versus now

with making every, anything, you know?

What you see in your head is not,

you're using materials, you know?

The recreation of what
you see in your head

is never going to be as accurate

or as pleasing to you
as you'd like it to be.

That's with everything.

You didn't do a bad job.

talking about in it, right?

(boyfriend sighs)

- I don't know, that's the problem.

If I could think of it,
I'd be doing it, right?

But is ultimately, is
that how everybody feels?

make entertainment, right?

And then they do that.

- I think there's something
to be said for that also.

Werewolf movies?

- People go and they watch
it and they get scared

and then they're happy and
then they leave, right?

I dunno, at least it
makes you feel something.

just it's a good experience to have.

everyone should experience

the pure business side of art because

I think that you really get good

when you lose hope in purity.

I'm changing because I feel fat.

still making small stuff

that's, like, interesting
and might be, you know,

might get, you know, recognition from Ben,

you still look cool, you
still have a leather jacket

and shit like that.

- And then he starts fending you off

and then you start to
turn into the werewolf

and he's maybe trying to hit you with it

and you bite him on the neck

and then pffft, giant can of blood.

'Cause it's gonna be like,

blood shoots up and that's how we cut out,

maybe to the moon.

But I like the idea of him slapping you.

- [Claire] I like it too,
that actually helps me a lot,

if the violence isn't sort
of completely one-sided.

- Yeah.

- [Claire] Yeah.

- Be more sexy, be more sexy.

- To the left.

- Yes, yeah, exactly.

And then we'll just ADR
all the moans later.

And you think that's awkward,

imagine when you're just in a room,

you're like (moans
sarcastically) for an hour,

'cause I've had to do that before

and no one can look each other in the eye.

look, I'd love to say, oh,

we're gonna bring this realism,

but it's all bullshit.

You know, I'd be lying, look,

I have all these things
that I wanna accomplish

that I'm too embarrassed to talk about--

- I'm not really a werewolf, so.

a lot of layers of lies

to this here picture that we're making.

But I mean, look, I have all my sort of

pretentious intentions that
I want to accomplish in this

that I'm too embarrassed to talk out,

the same way you're
embarrassed to talk about this,

there's a whole list of things that I just

won't even dare to speak out loud.

But I'm gonna make sure
they're in the movie.

All we need you to do on the day

is you just show up, try to be cool,

sitting on a stranger, naked,

if you can handle that, I can handle

making sure you're seducing him properly.

- Okay.

you know about sleazy male directors,

kinda sexy, late night,

almost erotic phone call
from a female director.

- I don't see why you're making
me feel like such a jerk.

- I'm not trying to make
you feel like a jerk,

I'm just saying--

- I don't know, you're starting something

and then you're sitting
there and holding back.

You're just letting me dig my own grave.

(boyfriend chuckles)

It's really annoying.

- Well, I'm sorry, all I said was that

I liked your friend, I think
she's really interesting

and I would like to work
with her on something.

I didn't realize that was an invitation

to dig your own grave, I
assumed your response would be,

- Yeah, but I mean, you're
just ignoring the fact

that it's completely
provocative, you're saying,

I just met three hours ago

"to play my girlfriend in my next movie.

"My next movie, which
I care so much about.

"My next movie, which is
such a huge part of my life,

"I think I'd just like to
cast Charlie as my girlfriend.

- She wouldn't be playing you.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it.

I'm also not saying that
she wouldn't be great in it,

I think that she would,
I'm just asking you

to acknowledge the fact that
it would be weird for me.

You know the way you make movies.

It's just surprising to me
that it's worth it to you

after having met her

in this movie, that you don't care

that you're making me feel uncomfortable.

- I would not pick up a camera ever again

for the rest of my life
or ever even think about

a movie again if I found
something else that made me happy,

because movies do not make me happy.

Making them doesn't make me happy,

watching them doesn't make me happy.

Mostly I'm just like overly critical

and I hate everything

and their success doesn't make me happy

and their failure doesn't make me happy.

The only reason why I'm still doing it

is 'cause I don't know
what else to do right now,

and I'd rather do something than nothing.

That's the biggest problem, I don't care.

I don't even want anything,
anything that could happen,

any movie that I make, whatever
possibly could happen to it,

like, I'm not interested
in winning prizes,

I'm not interested in making money,

I'm not interested in good reviews.

Like there's no thing that
the movies could get me.

They get me close to people.

That's all that's left.

Making movies allows me
to get close to people

that I find interesting.

That's probably why I'm still doing it.

About the only people that
did during that time period

were crooks that would cut one off

just so they could hide it,

which is why they then became later,

they evolved into a commercial product.

Basically, somebody would say,

"This is what I need but it's
not fitting in my pocket,"

then he gets a hacksaw and cuts it off.

Enough guys do that, the company goes,

"Well, maybe we oughta put
out a short barrel version."

being in my parents' house?

But only for like a day,
Christmas, two days.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day.

- I was home for Christmas
Eve, Christmas Day this year.

like there's this windy staircase and then

on the pole of the staircase was it,

and I was looking at all
their werewolf masks,

and I was like, "What is that one?"

and the guy couldn't even get up to it.

I was like, "You gotta get up to it

"'cause I'm gonna buy it."

And he brought it down, it was $600

but the mouth was falling apart

and the paint was peeling off

so I just talked him
into the fact that like,

"It's a piece of shit and
no one's ever gonna buy it,

"so just let me buy it for $150 today,

"or I walk out of the store."

And the guy had a parrot on his shoulder,

and he eventually agreed.

And so I had this big bag
and I was like, "Yes!"

And I went back to the dorms

and I was like, "Check it out!"

And everyone was like, "What
the fuck, it's gigantic."

And I took it home on the train and like,

I don't know, it was a weird scene.

- How was that?

- [Voiceover] It was good, I mean,

I think I could do better, but.

- [Boyfriend] All right, another try?

That's all the glue I used.

midnight movie things,

but what's, why do you feel like we need

these nostalgic kind of, or like,

what impulses you to do that?

- I'm sort of like a personal filmmaker

and I just make movies
to just amuse myself

and ideas that I want to accomplish,

and I hope that my taste mixes with

what other people like so people see them.

I mean, this movie is my most, like,

I was young, I was trying to
accomplish a certain thing,

this B-movie vibe and have it be like,

not campy, because I don't like that term,

but like, have it exist as
something that we kind of know,

- Why work in a genre like horror

and not get to the gore right away?

- I like all kinds of movies,

I really like horror movies a lot,

but I don't make horror movies for like,

just to see people mutilated, you know,

I'm not the kind of person
that goes to the theater

I've never been that person.

I'm someone who's always looking for

an interesting story that uses horror

as a metaphor, as some catalyst for

something interesting to happen.

And character-wise or emotionally.

And that, unfortunately,
is not usually the case,

usually horror movies
are really exploitative,

it's all about creatively
people are killed,

and it becomes this sort of spectacle.

- Are we gonna satisfy that bloodlust

in Silver Bullets, are
we gonna get like...

- I don't wanna spoil too much,

but I mean it is a werewolf movie,

so when it gets there, I mean
there's definitely like...

ever particularly uneven.

That was real difficult to deal with.
