Honestly, this ballroom holds so many fond memories for me

from dancing, I got to judge,

and now I get to co-host with you!

I am so excited to see what our stars have planned for us.

Well, over the next few months, they'll have to learn

just about every type of ballroom and Latin dance,

something we don't tell them

until they've signed the contracts, okay?

And the couple that does it best,

of our Dancing With The Stars family tonight.

Of course, I'm talking about head judge Len Goodman,

who passed away earlier this year.

Len was on this panel for nearly all of our 31 seasons,

and though he is certainly ir-ir-irreplaceable,

and yes he is, we wanted to keep his spirit alive.

And that's why, as a tribute to him, we redesigned

and renamed our ultimate prize.

Let's get our first look at the Len Goodman Mirror Ball Trophy.

It is so fantastic that Len will always be

going forward with us.

Absolutely.

She's also our youngest competitor of this season.

It's 17-year-old Xochitl Gomez

and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy.

[Xochitl] I'm Xochitl Gomez, I'm an actress,

and I have done lots of stunts,

but I don't really know, like, ballroom dancing.

Stunts are hard. Ballroom's hard.

We'll see how it goes. [laughs]

Now, here we are, Dancing With The Stars.

I can't believe it.

-[giggles] Hi. Can I hug you? -Hi. How are you?

-I'm good. How are you? -Nice to meet you.

Oh, my God. I'm so excited.

My partner is Val, and I'm very excited about it.

On a scale of one to ten, it's a ten.

-I'm only 16. I just turned 16. -Okay.

How did I forget that I'm only 17?

It's okay.

She is such a bundle of energy,

so I'm excited to teach her how to dance.

I want to know what you know about ballroom dancing.

Nothing. [laughs]

I mainly just do kind of like TikTok dances,

so that's kind of why I appreciated everything you did

with Zendaya, just because of how young she was

and having to think outside of the box.

So our first dance is going to be the cha-cha.

So you push. Whoo!

[Xochitl] Cha-cha's fast, and I think

that is a good first dance

to show my personality.

We wanna balance, obviously.

We don't wanna chaos in our routine.

The cha-cha requires a lot of energy,

and Xochitl has a lot of it.

What we need to do now is channel that energy.

[Xochitl] I've never really been judged or scored for anything,

so a little jitters, but I'm ready. [laughs]

Xochitl, what a way to start the show.

I mean, shot out of a cannon,

so much personality, so fun watching you.

To mirror what she just said a little bit,

you have beautiful long limbs. It's gorgeous.

That's a beautiful thing. Beautiful thing.

But it means it had to be a little bit more contained,

a little bit more resistant, so you place the arms,

place the feet, place the legs.

But listen, that first dance was sensational. Well done.

But I'm telling you, your potential is enormous.

I've been performing my whole life,

and Dancing With The Stars has been on my bucket list,

as has learning how to how to ballroom dance.

My buddy, Donny Osmond was the oldest winner ever.

He was just a young pup, around 51 years old when he won.

I'm coming after you, Donny.

-Dreams come true. -Oh, my gosh.

My childhood memories just came flooding back to me.

What do you want to get out of the show?

I'm not at the beginning of my career,

but I've always wanted to learn to ballroom dance.

I would like to give younger generations

something they can look forward to growing up in to.

-You've got great energy. -I am excited.

And for my own generation to say we can still put it on.

What do you think could be your physical limitations?

The biggest thing is to be sure that I'm stretched.

Mm-hmm.

Now, does this course come with a chiropractor as well?

One, two...

The foxtrot, it's very grand. It's very smooth.

Ooh. Chest up.

[Peta] Barry has some moves, but the hips need a little oil,

a little zhuzhing up.

I think he could become the oldest winner

of Dancing With The Stars.

I may not be the youngest in the competition...

...but I've been a performer my entire life.

And I think that's what will give me the edge tonight.

Wow! Barry, I mean, I'm kind of in shock, my man.

That was so effortless and just So easy to watch.

And you reminded me that I need to loosen up my hips right now.

Truly, I mean this from the bottom of my heart,

that was so fun to watch.

I just was fully engaged.

The frame gets a little small in foxtrot.

There's going to be a lot of pivots

in every single dance in this show. A lot of pivot turns.

Make sure they keep the legs flexed.

That way you won't come up here and this gets distorted.

But, my man, that like warmed my heart.

That was beautiful, man. I love it.

Absolutely true, Derek.

It was a foxtrot with a sunny disposition.

You know, it makes you look good and it makes you feel good.

You danced like the perfect gentleman.

I spent my summer running in the sand

because a lot of this is core and your legs.

What would you hope to get out of this?

I want people to say, "Hey, can you show us some stuff?"

Ballroom dance, it's not something that you get

in the hood, so hopefully some kids would be like,

"Tyson did it. I'm gonna do it."

Week on, we're dancing the cha cha.

Rhythm, timing, you have to be in sync.

[Jenna] The steps aren't completely polished yet,

but he definitely has some sexy hips to make up for it.

so work on the technique.

Well, I love you want to inspire the youth.

And I think the way to do that is to really sort of embrace

this competition, so I'm going to give you some real

constructive feedback.

Dancing is everything between the posing.

And what I saw was like you're really heavy when you step

but that's because you're hitting it, right?

And then models walk off tempo, right?

So, this is difficult for you

but I really loved your commitment.

And when you got into it with Jenna,

there were some really great moments

and I see a lot of potential.

-So, stick with it, okay? -We'll get better.

You've got a lot to work on, but you've got it.

And she was like, "No."

That was the first and last of my dance career.

It traumatized me and I'm on Dancing With The Stars now

to repair my childhood trauma.

So, for the premiere we're doing a salsa.

It's fun, fast, lots of hips.

Why are you doing that face?

When I saw Alyson move,

I realized the character and the acting...

Yeah. Yeah.

...is going to be the best part for Alyson.

I tricked myself.

-She can't dance. -Oh, I went the wrong way.

But by the end of the season I think she's going to be

an amazing dancer.

And you were like, "Oh, what do I do with this foot?"

Anything I'm struggling with? Yes, dancing.

This is so graceful, right?

because tonight I am doing this for my 3-year-old self.

The last time I tried to dance, my friends thought

I was having an allergic reaction.

What made you want to do this show?

Look, I just wanted to test myself

and be vulnerable and learn new skills.

And then also, one day, when I get married, I want to be able

to dance with my wife on the wedding night.

Well, that's the cutest thing I've ever heard.

Okay. So you are quite tall.

You are 6'5", is that correct?

Yeah. I'm built like a flamingo.

Yeah. It's all legs.

Flamingo was not what I was thinking.

But how has that actually been challenging for you?

It's hard in everyday life.

I bang my head on everything. I can't fit on planes.

So trying to dance has been crazy.

[Mira] You probably know me from movies and television,

but my whole life it's been sort of a dream

to be more of a dancer.

So Dancing With The Stars feels like this second chance

to dance on a world stage.

I'm super excited Mira's my partner.

I've seen her in so many movies.

-This is like a dream of mine. -Bucket list.

Ballet for eight years as a kid.

But back in the day, tall dancers weren't really wanted.

and I was like, "Okay, I'm just gonna focus on acting."

I was stuck in a mindset of like,

"Oh, no, I should be more diminutive. I should be small."

This is my year of like filling like artistic dreams

that are not what I've always done.

Where is the passion to dance come from?

My dad and I used to watch all the Fred Astaire movies.

So my happiest moments

are swimming in the Bay of Naples or dancing.

I love it.

Okay, the first dance is the cha-cha-cha.

This is so exciting.

My comfort zone is having a script and character to play.

So you're gonna go cha cha...

And this is me doing the thing I love most

but I'm not necessarily the best at.

[Gleb] The cha-cha is all about rotations.

I need Mira to work on the flexibility in her hips

to be able to create that perfect rotation.

-But... Mm-mm. -No, was that right?

[Mira] No, in a movie,

they'll do multiple takes.
