I'm 20 and I'm originally
from Florence, South Carolina,

but I go to school
in Charleston.

Charleston is beautiful.

Me and my friends
will wake up at 6:00 a.m.

and go catch the sunrise.

Growing up, I would sing
throughout the house.

I was told it wasn't
really good.

We'd always be,
"Grace-Miller", you know,

because we'd be trying
to watch TV or something.

She was very loud.

With music my family is
my biggest supporters,

and I would not be
anywhere near here without them.

My younger brother Shott,
at the age of seven,

was diagnosed with leukemia.

He went through chemotherapy
for four years.

He did start to get
pretty exhausted from it.

I remember him losing his hair.

I remember there was hair
everywhere in our house.

Well, it was
kind of tough.

Um...

My dad couldn't
get out of bed for a few days,

just couldn't even come
to the realization

that this was all happening
to our family.

It was a long battle,
but I'm here now,

and I'm thankful
to be seeing her sing today.

Adam Levine is back
this season.

That's super exciting.
We all have seen him live.

After Shott was done
with leukemia and everything,

we all took a family trip
to Las Vegas,

and we went to
a Maroon 5 concert.

It brought us back together
after Shott was hospitalized.

So it would be
a full circle moment

to see Adam Levine turn
his chair.

But Kelsea Ballerini,

it's insane to know that
she's going to be on the show.

She has this really cool
vibe to her.

She's country,
but gives a little bit of pop.

When I was 4 years old,

was murdered due

That was really tough
on me growing up.

There weren't really many people
for me to, like, look up to

and say, "Hey,
I want to be like this guy."

I had a lot of love from my mom,

but not having my dad there,
it was kind of like 50% of that

I didn't really have.

but sometimes think about, man,

you know, who would I have been
if I had a dad?

Breaking that generational curse
for my daughters

and being a family person
is so important to me.

It really inspired me
to go harder.

In 2015,
I moved to L.A. to pursue music,

but my day job is teaching.

I teach science to kids,

and I try to instill
other values, as well.

for my kids at home.

Darius J: Growing up in school,
I did not have a lot of friends.

I was 13 when I came out.

I was bullied a lot
for being different.

But I did notice
that the bullying subsided

anytime I was singing,
so singing became, you know,

not just something
I loved to do,

but an escape
from horrible kids.

That's why I'm always laughing

and I'm always trying
to make people laugh --

because people went out
of their way to make me cry.

Darius J: I didn't know
how to deal with those emotions

to the point
where I started acting out.

So my mom sent me to live
with her brother in New Jersey

to kind of reel me back in.

We felt the best thing
for him was to get away.

It did help.

Moving to new Jersey
was the best thing

that ever happened to me.

It showed me that maybe
it's not that you don't fit in.

Maybe you just don't fit in
where you are.

There are people just like me
in different places.

You just have to find them.

We struggled a lot.

We were poor,

but they didn't even know
