of studying serial killers

we give blood samples.

What is the significance of blood

and of the typing and DNA
testing we will be doing?

For the answers to these questions
I suggest we look to history.

In 1 888...a series of brutal
murders took place

which heralded the age of the serial killer.

They were committed in the
East End of London, in England

by a man popularly known
as Jack the Ripper.

Amongst his victims were Polly Nichols,
Annie Chapman

Elisabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes
and Mary Jane Kelly.

The victims were subjected
to horrendous mutilations

carried out with an exacting
surgical precision.

Today, we can analyze fibres, prints, hair,
bone, dental records, tissue, and of course...

blood, which we will be
doing in the coming weeks.

With these methods, we can
reach far back into the past

as I did in my own book, to establish
the true identity of Jack the Ripper...

Montague John Druitt.

How do serial killers of recent
times compare with the Ripper?

I want you to step inside
the killer's mind.

How do they manipulate their prey?
What motivates them

and equally important,
what methods do they use

to gain the confidence
of their victims? Jason.

- Albert DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler,
posed as a building maintenance man

and preyed on single women
living in apartment buildings.

- Preyed on what specifically?

- A sense of loneliness?

around mechanical things.

What are some of the psychological factors
that link these killers and their traits?

- Premature ejaculation?

- He's sexually frustrated, perhaps impotent.
He craves the bodies of his victims

gaining control over them, dominance.
- How does he get close enough to them

to do that?

Who is this man?
- He gets close because he seems like

the most harmless man
she's ever met

He projects an aura of success, like Bundy did,
like a bad cologne, to appeal to her vanity.

But he's a bubbling mass of rage inside,
because his mama died, or left him, and

his caretaking came with a nasty little
condition called, ""leave me, and I'll fuck you.""

He's white, well-educated, speaks to her
like a teacher, like... like a ""Mack Daddy""

to soothe her, stroke her impress her,
weave his little web around her.

His work seems dangerous, yet respected,
and she finds it appealing, but strange

like him, with his nervous ticks
and inner anxieties.

- That's very interesting, Miss Keller.
One might almost think

you could've been describing myself.
Do you think I could match the profile

of such a killer?

- No.

- Because the killer's a con, and your rap's

and you can't turn it down fast enough.

of the police coroner's report

for the cause of death for Marisa.
The medical examiner wrote

that she had been strangled, then,
her throat cut from left to right.

Several teeth had been knocked out, and
she had suffered thirty-nine stab wounds

mainly to the breasts,
stomach, and genitals.

This is another drawing, altered only to
match the scale of Marisa's drawings.

Another murder committed, in 1 888. The
victim's name, Martha Tabram.

generally acknowledged to be
the first victim of Jack the Ripper.

Most historians disagree with your
statement about Martha Tabram.

Instead, clearly identified Polly Nichols
as the first victim of the Ripper.

But I commend you for recognizing the
symmetry between Miss Tavares's wounds

and those of the Ripper victims. However,
there are several glaring inconsistencies

between the modus operandi of Jack the
Ripper, and of whomever killed Miss Tavares.

First, all of the Ripper victims were
prostitutes. Marisa was not.

Second, he killed clandestinely, and usually
left the bodies in an alley, not in public view.

Third, he killed with an expert surgical hand,
which, although, admittedly, was more

evident in the later victims, did unerringly
point to Montague John Druitt.

Druitt was a teacher, with surgical training,
whereas Miss Tavares's incisions

are far too crude, not the work of a surgeon.

In short, Miss Keller, your
comparison misses the mark

by a long shot.

The Ripper killed in alleyways but
they were always near busy streets.

The police medical examiner report, at the
time, indicated that the wounds of the victim

were that of a nature indicating surgical
training, or use of a tool, such as knives

used by a butcher, or dock worker.

What if Druitt wasn't the Ripper?

What about Joseph Barnett? He was also a
suspect, and boyfriend to the last victim

Mary Kelly. He was a fish cleaner, and dock
worker, who owned such a set of knives

not a surgeon. He matches the profile.

I mean, does it even matter if the killer isn't
absolutely faithful to the Ripper's M.O.?

I mean, if the killer thinks he's following
in the Ripper's footsteps, I mean

isn't that all that counts? I mean, doesn't
that give us something to work on?

Weren't you the one who said we had
to think outside the box, professor?

the condition of survivor's guilt?

see where others cannot?
