=Episode 15=

Don't punish yourself

for someone else's mistake.

Zhang Qiulin is blind.

You should live a better life

and be more successful.

Why do you avoid him?

When you look back in a few years,

this will just be nothing.

You can't ruin your future

for this little thing.

Without him, I wouldn't be a college student!

So what?

Now, you can move on.

Go your own way

and live your own life.

You have to get through it

instead of turning back.

Don't be a deserter.

I can't get through it.

If you can't,

I will accompany you.

Nothing is impossible.

You know what?

In my eyes,

you're far better

than his girlfriend.

What's the point?

He doesn't like me.

He doesn't love me.

Whatever.

We don't want him.

I love you.

Mom loves you. So does Grandma.

We all love you and care for you.

In the future,

you can move away if you get a flat from work.

You won't see that man anymore.

This is a big city.

You can live anywhere else.

Right?

I've been there.

I totally understand your feelings.

But love isn't the whole of life.

You have your family.

You have friends.

In the future,

you will be in love.

Now, you must get strong.

You need to work

and have your own career.

These things won't betray you.

Nor will we.

Jiali.

It's ok.

It's not a problem.

You told her what to do. She'll decide.

Jiahuan has always been stubborn.

I think she listened.

She just lost her mind.

Ask her to come back.

Jobs in our city are better.

That's for sure.

I guess there are

some other reasons.

Young guys are shortsighted

and thoughtless.

Things are fine now.

Jianguo is contacting local companies.

Let's see which one will hire her.

That's great.

In her hometown,

she has us to rely on.

If she works in another city,

I'm afraid she'll be bullied.

Your fourth granddaughter has a bandit's temper.

Nobody dares to bully her.

I'm the big bandit.

She's the little one.

Don't say that.

I'll be the old one, then.

Mr. Zhang,

our company has just started.

We don't have our own building.

During the early days,

the conditions are tough.

So now, we stay at the district finance bureau.

But it won't affect

our normal business.

This isn't a problem.

But we need to make a difference.

Our top priority

is to hold deposits

and make loans.

Go back and make a detailed plan.

Ok.

Then...

Can I apply for a dorm?

But you don't live far away, do you?

My daily commute takes some time.

During the early days,

I may need to work overtime.

I see.

Fine. I'll do my best to get you a dorm.

Thank you, Mr. Zhang.

It's enough.

Have some more.

Jiawen and Jiayi can't come today.

I'll represent them.

Let's raise our glasses.

Cheers.

Jiahuan finally gets a job.

Jiahuan, congrats.

- Thanks. - A toast to you, Jiahuan.

Thanks.

Jiahuan,

you've finally got a job.

Why do you look depressed?

Your job is really perfect.

Jiahuan, work hard.

Your job is promising.

You're the only college student in our family.

I'll do a good job and bring glory to our family.

That's more like it.

I've applied for a dorm.

I'll move out when it's available.

Is our house toxic?

Mom, don't say that.

The work thing, you know.

This company has just started.

I often need to work overtime.

Living here won't interfere with your work.

Jiahuan, don't move out rashly.

If she moves out, so will I.

Don't follow her lead.

Fine. You can all leave.

You think you're tough now, huh?

You all want to leave.

Dislike Grandma and me, huh?

That's not what she means.

Jiahuan,

we'll talk about it later.

Now, you stay at home.

What does he do?

He works at Machine Tool Plant.

A worker?

A middle manager, actually.

If only she could marry a doctor.

That's true.

But this young man.

Look. He's handsome, right?

He's a nice guy, too.

You know what? Honesty matters most.

Am I right, Grandma He?

Mom, do you think Jiahuan will like him?

Are we being too impatient?

Jiahuan

has just started to work.

She's already 21.

How about we show her the photo?

Take a closer look.

Look at this guy.

From Machine Tool Plant.

He's a middle manager.

He looks handsome, too.

You look like a good match.

Do you have feelings?

No need.

What do you mean?

I don't need anyone.

He Jiahuan,

don't be so ungrateful.

You have to get married.

Who said that?

I'll stay at home,

living with you and Grandma forever.

Can we accompany you forever?

Impossible.

I'll then live with the chickens.

Chickens?

He Jiahuan, why are you so stubborn?

Isn't he a great choice?

(May Day Shopping Mall)

See you.

Thanks.

Hello. May I help you?

(Yan Hongyu) One Longyan tiger-oil tonic wine.

(Tiger-oil Tonic Wine)

Thanks.

You're welcome.

How did you get in here?

Get out of here.

Come on.

Would you like something else?

A bag of Huaijian MSG.

A tin of Yiyi milk powder.

A can of Shanghai Qianghua malted milk.

Two bags of Yunlong pork floss and pork jerky each.

A bottle of ground sesame oil.

So many things?

Five bottles of Tianbing lychee soda.

Here are three bottles.

Five bottles in all.

One Huainan Special Spirit.

Don't move.

What are you doing?

Trying to hold your chair.

I believe

you're up to something.

Why do you always want to break the rules?

Did someone send you to discredit my master?

You know what? When I'm here,

- no one can do that. - No...

No what?

What are you guys doing?

Master.

I didn't let him in.

He broke in.

Mom.

What are you doing here?

Your aunt gave you a list again, huh?

Master, who is he?

My son.

He's Yan Hongyu, working at No. 2 Car Factory.

Hongyu, this is my apprentice,

He Jiaxi.

Mom, she's fun.

To stop me from coming in,

she nearly fought me.

I didn't know who you were.

Jiaxi did the right thing.

Without permission,

no one can get in here.

Even if you're my son.

Get out of here. Go.

Jiaxi.

Here. Get him the things on the list.

All right.

Jiaxi,

pack them, please.

Is she really your mother?

Of course.

But you don't look alike.

(No. 28 Yanhuai Road)

Jiahuan.

Jiahuan.

- Jiahuan. - Why are you back?

Aren't you rushing to work?

Hi, Qiulin.

- Morning. - Morning.

Thank you everybody

for coming to my new home.

The dish is coming.

- Jiawen, you're so lucky. - Weiguo.

Thank you, Weiguo.

You're welcome.

Weiguo's pork ribs soup

tastes super great.

Of course.

He has been cooking since he was little.

I also cooked.

I even cooked for Jiaxi.

I didn't eat anything you made.

You did.

When?

- In childhood. - Get the bowls.

Enjoy the food.

- Thanks. - Not at all.

You had a long day.

Jiawen.

Your new flat

is really suitable.

Thanks to Weiguo.

The living room is too small, though.

It's enough for a family of three.

Right. That's the disadvantage

of the old flat.

Small living room.

No space for too many people.

When we chose the flat,

I told Ouyang something.

The bedrooms can be small.

The living room has to be big.

Having a big ceiling lamp

will be artistic.

Yeah.

But you haven't invited us there

to enjoy it.

I don't have a reason for that.

When you have a boyfriend, take him to my flat.

I'll prepare a big dinner to make you proud.

Let's eat.

A toast to you, Jiawen.

To your new home.

- Be happy. - Thanks.

I have work to do. I should go.

Don't go.

Jiahuan, you just...

- I'll walk you out. - Why?

Jiahuan.

Go back to lunch.

Ok.

What's wrong?

Jiahuan...

Was she provoked?

Shut up and eat.

How could you be so sarcastic?

What's wrong?

Jiali, come on.

The Family Council

should try to get Jiahuan a husband.

How do you know we haven't tried?

I think

Ouyang's brother is good.

He works at Water Conservancy Bureau.

Generous.

He's easy-going and generous.

Which brother?

The pockmarked one?

Jiali,

focus on the really important thing.

What's wrong with his face?

Don't judge a man by his appearance.

My husband has acne scars, too.

Jiahuan is demanding.

She's just idealistic.

(AH Trust Investment Corporation) First, I'll praise someone

for her passion for work.

That is Ms. He Jiahuan.

Mom, when can we have dinner?

I'm starving.

- So am I. - Not until Jiahuan is back.

She's back.

There she is.

Jiahuan, you're finally back.

Wash your hands.

We're waiting for you.

Come have dinner.

Jiahuan is trying to be a career woman.

She always works overtime.

What's wrong with being a career woman?

One of my daughters

should focus on a career.

Your company is really harsh.

You have to work all day.

I'm just a little busy.

Qiulin came back early.

You came back so late.

I have nothing to do with him.

If you can't wait, eat at his place.

Don't be so rude.

Come on.

Here. Have less rice

and have more dishes.

(Huainan AH Trust Investment Corporation)

Come in.

Umm...

I'm here to ask about the loan

for our logistics department.

They want to run a salesroom.

Keep the door open.

Fill in the form.

Jiahuan,

is there some sort of misunderstanding?

What do you come here for?

Business or private affairs?

Business.

I just asked by the way.

If there is, we'll solve it.

No misunderstanding.

In some old cases,

I was being thoughtless. I apologize.

You were never thoughtless.

- Are we still friends? - No.

Jiahuan,

actually these years...

What exactly are you here for?

The loan.

Then, let's only talk about that.

I'll get married.

You have my blessing.

You can't go.

What do you mean?

You're going nowhere, huh?

Ok.

Oh, Jiali.

You won't really stop me, huh?

My company approved.

This is a big event.

I'll win glory.

I represent the Breakdance Club

of Huainan Youth Center.

You're too old for the Youth Center.

I don't care. I must go.

You insist, huh?

Fine.

I have one condition.

What is it?

Jiahuan will go with you.

Why?

You're a rash girl.

We worry about you.

Does she not work?

She's on a vacation.

Two choices.

First, you can't go.

Second, Jiahuan will go with you.

Second.

She'll pay by herself.

I'll pay.

Jiali.

End of discussion.

You're biased.

I don't dance.

I'm not interested in her breakdance.

Guangzhou is an important city.

Isn't it great to travel there?

I won't go.

I'm doing this for your own good.

Thank you, but no thank you.

Zhang Qiulin

will get married next week.

We're all invited.

Will you go?

I'll go to Guangzhou.

A pair of tens.

A pair of kings.

Zhenmin.

Why are you called Turbo?

I got him this stage name. How does it sound?

Not good.

Then why is she Kelly?

She got herself that stage name.

Sounds bad, right?

It's the name of the heroine in Breakin'.

Your turn.

How can you be a heroine

with this plain face?

Can I not be a heroine, Jiahuan?

You can.

(Guangzhou Station)

(Guangzhou)

Why can't I share a room with you?

Jiahuan is here.

So what?

Go back to your room.

Jiahuan will be back.

I don't want to go back.

Why can't we share a room?

My sister is here.

How can I share your room?

She's here, so what?

You tell me.

What if she tells Jiali?

I don't know why she came here.

She's upset.

She wants some fresh air.

But she's always upset.

Do you know she has a crush on Qiulin?

Don't be ridiculous.

It's true. My brother told me.

Go back to your room. She'll be back.

One more kiss.

Can you go now? Come on.

I'm less willing to go.

Just go.

Hey, let's talk.

I'll go back, then.

Hey.

Get up early tomorrow.

Liu Xiaoling,

are you in a relationship?

No.

Tell me the truth.

I won't tell anyone else.

No, really.

What about Tang Zhenmin?

What are you talking about?

Go to bed now.

Our families have had a feud for generations.

Even Jiali failed.

How dare you challenge?

We're really not together.

Fine.

Let's talk to Mom and Jiali.

He Jiahuan, are you insane?

I'll go make a call.

Hey, Jiahuan. Come back.

Will you really tell them?

I'll confess, ok?

Tang Zhenmin

has feelings for me.

But I don't like him.

Whether you like him or not,

you have to stop now.

Why?

Our families...

Don't bring up the enemy thing.

It's the new century.

We're no longer enemies.

And why would that

impede this generation?

I know what you mean.

You don't want me to marry before you.

Right.

That's what I mean.

What if you never get married?

Do I have to be a nun?

I just don't understand.

What does Jiahuan really want?

That's easy.

Think about her profession.

Jiahuan?

She's an accountant.

That's right.

What do you mean?

What does an accountant care most for?

Money?

When we're all married,

Jiahuan will stay alone.

This house

and everything in it,

including some deposits,

will be hers.

We don't have a brother.

The last one to get married will win.

But she can't refuse to get married

just for this little money.

This is just a possibility.

Besides, Jiahuan is fierce.

What kind of man dares to marry her?

If you were a man, would you?

No.

That's right.

Liu Xiaoling.

Liu Xiaoling!

What's up?

Who gave this to you?

That's my business.

Tang Zhenmin, huh?

Are you insane?

Mom, Jiahuan is insane!

- Look at her. - Stop fighting!

Stop it!

Leave here if you want.

You owe me a rose!

Stop shouting.

What happened again?

Meixin,

what's wrong with you?

Mom,

Mrs. Tang passed away.

Life is so boring.

How could she die so unexpectedly?

Mom,

come have dinner.

Get up slowly.

Where's she?

Who?

Where's Jiahuan?

She went to work early this morning.

What about Xiaoling and Jiaxi?

Are you confused?

Xiaoling said she wouldn't come back for dinner.

Jiaxi hasn't come back yet.

She'll eat alone, I think.

I'm even too old to chew up the meat.

I took a bite.

It's ok.

You eat more.

How come

time passes so slowly now?

(Early 1990)

Mom, sit there. Don't get up.

Grandma. Mom.

Weiguo, Jiawen.

Such a smell of chicken poop.

Mom, when will you stop raising chickens?

We've been eating chicken for years.

Why are there still live chickens?

Because they have chicks.

You don't like them now?

When you were little,

you even fought for the eggs

from the chicken. Don't you remember?

Ms. Liao.

Get me a chair.

Ok.

And wash the crabs.

Yes.

Jiayi,

don't order her about.

I pay her, Grandma.

She's a working lady, anyway.

Talk nicely to her.

Jiayi, according to Marxism,

capitalists get rich by exploiting

the surplus value of working people.

Weiguo,

I'm a working lady,

not a capitalist.

I never exploit Ms. Liao, either.

- Just kidding. - I think Jiayi

has the soul of a capitalist.

Don't say that.

Who knows if the policy will change?

And who knows what may happen?

We just make a living.

Ouyang told me

your business was good

and you started a company.

Come to me if you want a loan.

He's just self-employed,

doing small businesses

for a little bit of money.

Where's Jiali?

And Jianguo?

Jianguo has something to do.

He'll come later.

Grandma, times have changed.

Eating crab is also an art.

It ends up

what it used to be.

- Here. - Come on, Jiayi.

Don't bother to teach Grandma.

When she ate crabs,

you weren't even born.

Sounds as if you witnessed that.

It must be Ouyang.

I'll go call him back.

Mom, you need a phone here.

How inconvenient.

Only a few of us live here.

What do we need a phone for?

I'll ask Ouyang to buy one for you.

Sorry, I'm late.

- Jianguo. - Jianguo.

What took you so long?

Some business.

Early this morning,

he went to the Telephone Bureau,

registered, lined up, and paid.

A phone will be installed here.

Then, we can contact more easily.

Jianguo is so thoughtful.

The installation fee is high.

Not really. 5,500 yuan.

Five...

So expensive.

That's too expensive.

It's ok. A phone makes it convenient.

Don't splash out like that.

You pay for installing a phone

and we'll pay when making a call.

But you don't need to go out.

Don't worry. I'll pay.

I'll go make a call.

Ok.

- Cheers, Jianguo. - Cheers.

Thank you, Jianguo.

Jiahuan,

Mom wants you to have a good life

and get a good husband.

He'll care for you

and spend his life with you.

What do you think?

What's your plan?

What kind of man do you want?

Tell us.

We'll notice.

No need.

Will you live alone like this?

You don't want us to set you up.

You can't be so unreasonable,

Jiahuan.

I planned to stay in Bengbu.

You made me come back.

Maybe I would have a husband

if I had worked there.

Come on.

You think you could get one there?

Jiahuan will get a husband.

It will just take some time.

It's about destiny, anyway.

Even so, she...

Come on.

Stop worrying about me.

I won't be in love in a short time.

You should worry about someone who is in love.

Don't be so sarcastic.

Right.

I'm the worst in the love case.

All my sisters do better than me.

Even my younger sister Xiaoling

has a boyfriend before me.

We're talking about you.

Don't get Xiaoling involved.

I know nobody loves me.

But under no circumstance

will I let my younger sister

get married before me.

I'm older than her.

Why can she get married before me?

Jiahuan, let's solve your problem first.

Do you not want Xiaoling to have a boyfriend

or do you not want her to get married?

She can't get married.

Xiaoling has a boyfriend.

You can't be unaware, can you?

Who's her boyfriend?

Our enemy, Tang Zhenmin.

Tang...

Do you know?

Did you see with your eyes?

They've been hitting on each other for years.

Have you not noticed anything?

Xiaoling will lose herself sooner or later.

If she ends up like Jiayi,

our family will be in chaos.

Don't say anything like that.

Did you hear?

Oh.

Are you really with Tang Zhenmin?

Jiahuan told you, huh?

She's a traitor.

I'll go see her.

Jiahuan has nothing to do with this.

It's your problem.

She supports you to have a boyfriend.

We all support you.

Really?

Glad you aren't too silly.

But...

I knew you would say that.

You can't be with Tang Zhenmin.

Why?

Whose opinion, yours or Jiahuan's?

It's my opinion.

Your grandma agrees.

So does your dead father.

The whole family disapproves.

Is that enough?

Don't deny that you're naive.

You and Tang Zhenmin.

Our families have had a feud for generations.

What are the benefits

of loving him?

Is there any hope?

But you went to his mother's funeral.

That's different.

There's no family feud in this century.

Xiaoling, we worry about you.

We don't want you to have a hard time.

What are the benefits

of marrying your enemy?

Isn't that perfect?

I can marry him and make trouble

to avenge our family.

Liu Xiaoling.

Jiali, Mom.

Let me choose my own way, ok?

I'm not silly.

No way. You are silly.

I'm old enough.

I can make my own decisions.

I know who's good and who's bad.

What if I learn from Jiayi?

I'll get pregnant

before marrying him.

You...

You are...

Mom. Mom.

Hey, Mom.

Sit there.

If you dare,

we'll expel you.

Do you hear?

Just saying.

I wouldn't really do that.

I won't follow in Jiayi's path.

She got married with a quilt

instead of any other dowry.

I have to be a straight-up wife.

Jiali, don't worry.

You failed to marry Tang Weimin.

I'll marry his brother.

Liu Xiaoling.

You're such an idiot.

How naive you are.

Do you know many members of his family

have been dead?

People die, ok?

Isn't that very common?

- We also lost... - We?

Your father died in an accident.

But they died of incurable diseases.

That's good.

His parents are gone.

I'll be in charge

and live a free life.

You...

Xiaoling, Mom is saying

they have a gene problem.

If not for your own sake,

for the sake of your children.

It's too risky.

This is a private conversation.

We won't hurt you.

This is the truth.

And think about Tang Zhenmin.

He always fools around

and never works hard.

He dances every day.

He can't be a good husband.

Dance is an art.

You don't understand.

You can't eat dance for dinner.

Art isn't the problem.

You can't marry him.

You just can't.

You idiot.

I'm your idiot daughter, anyway.

You...

Mom!

- What's up? - Look. Xiaoling left a note,

saying she'd move into her dorm.

Call Jiali right now.

We've got a rebellious girl.

What does it say?

"I'll move to my dorm.

Don't come to me.

I need to be alone.

Exclamation mark.

By Liu Xiaoling. From today on."

All the girls can leave.

We're old enough.

Nothing should bother us.

When children grow up,

they can't be controlled.

Let her be.

Unless she breaks the law.

She didn't say she wouldn't come back home.

(I'll move into my dorm. Don't come to me.)

Why?

Will we always be involved with the Tang Family?

Big Tang and his wife are dead.

Drop this.

Actually, I think

Tang Zhenmin is more honest than his second brother.

He's a nice guy, really.

Jiahuan, what are you doing?

Go check on her.

Jiahuan.

Jiahuan.

What are you doing, Jiahuan?

What are you doing?

Mom, let me go.

What are you doing?

What's happening here?

Can't you live without a man?

Grandma, she's being ridiculous.

What were you doing?

Getting down the wind-bell.

What about the suitcase?

I plan to move out.

Where are you moving?

I rented a flat.

Isn't our house big enough?

You share one single room.

It's not about the space.

Then, what is it about?

I...

I can't stay here, Mom.

I...

I don't fit in here at all.

I'm nothing like anybody.

I can hardly breathe here.

Can't you let me out for some fresh air?

What did we do to you?

What did we do?

Stop it.

It's no use hitting her.

I'm so pissed off.

It's not that you can't move out.

But it may not be safe out there.

All right. I won't try to stop you.

You know what?

When you move out,

tell Jiali

where you live.

Come back home in case of trouble.

What are you talking about, Mom?

I don't want to talk to you.

Come on. Let's go.

Let's go and ignore her.

Come on.

What will be

will be.

We can't stop her.

Look on the bright side.

Jiaxi won't come back for dinner, huh?

Her master would buy her dinner.

So, we'll have dinner alone.

Yes, only the two of us.

In this big house,

only you and I are staying.

That's not a problem.

People

are born alone and die alone.

Always alone.

Maybe soon,

in this big house,

you'll be all alone.

Mom.
