=Episode 1=

"Her arched brows carved like a bow.

And dark on white her speaking eyes.

Her cheeks with smiles and dimples glow."

Beautiful.

How beautiful!

(Luo Residence) Look, everyone.

The portrait of Miss Luo

who's the fairest of Shuozhou!

Miss Luo?

Take a look.

- Don't fool us outsiders. - That doesn't

- She can't be the fairest. - look like her at all.

Why hasn't she come out yet?

She's turning 24 today.

That's one of the most important birthdays

for girls.

Be patient.

Keep waiting.

Wait makes the heart grow fonder.

People should learn to wait.

See?

My 24th birthday has finally come.

My Lady! My Lady! My Lady!

You won't believe how luxurious

the sedan that's waiting for you outside is.

Why are Uncle and Aunt

being so nice to us all of a sudden?

They mean to show everyone

(Luo Lingyu) that I, Luo Lingyu,

has turned 24.

They're going to such great lengths

to marry me into the Fan Mansion.

Fan Mansion?

Because the Fan Clan will pay them a fortune.

A fortune?

Sister, you said

(Luo Yunhua) before our parents died,

they had deposited our family property worth

500,000 taels of gold in the government.

That's a lot more than a fortune.

According to the law, the government

(Lingxi) keeps the family property

of those who lost their parents.

It can be withdrawn once they become householders.

Are you going to marry into the Fan Clan?

If so,

my property will become theirs.

The Luo Clan from Jingyang only allows people in,

not out.

All girls can take in husbands,

including me.

Hua,

do you still remember

our family motto?

"Never give up.

Bring honor to the clan."

That's right.

Once I find a matrilocal husband,

the great Luo Clan from Jingyang

will regain its former glory.

So you can't be married off.

Exactly.

Here you go.

We're going out.

I can plan my escape route.

Escaping from my wedding is like

playing with fire after all.

Let's go.

Lingxi, put the veiled hat on me.

Yes, My Lady.

(Luo Residence)

Miss Luo's turning 24!

She's coming out!

She's out!

She's out! She's out!

- Miss Luo! - Miss Luo!

- Miss Luo! - Miss Luo!

- Miss Luo! - Miss Luo!

Miss Luo!

- How gorgeous! - Miss Luo! Miss Luo!

No, thanks. Thank you.

- Excuse me. - Coming through.

Thank you. Thanks, everyone.

Be careful.

Miss Luo!

Thank you. Thanks.

Miss Luo!

Miss Luo, this is my drawing.

I made this portrait for you.

You can give it to me, sir.

Sure.

She's captivating!

Miss Luo, how do you stay so slim?

Are there any tips?

My sister doesn't eat...

She doesn't eat.

Write it down.

No tips. I'm born this way.

Miss Luo,

I own a gold store.

These East Pearls are for you.

Miss Luo,

I made a gown with various birds' feathers.

Come to my shop to try it on.

I just created this face cream.

I got this bracelet from the Cloud Temple.

Please take it.

(100 Taels, 50 Taels, 15 Taels) Look at my gift.

(One Copper) Look at mine! This is my gift!

This is our family heirloom.

Look at my gift, Miss Luo.

Take a look.

Thank you, sweetie.

It's so nice of you to prepare these gifts.

But things like pearls are too expensive.

I don't deserve them.

I'm taking her bracelet from the temple

because it's the thought that counts.

Thank you.

My gown is out of this world!

Thank you.

- Miss Luo! - See you. Goodbye.

Sister, that's a huge pearl!

Don't you regret turning it down?

Yes.

Of course I do.

But you win some, you lose some.

Pearls might be expensive,

but they can be bought.

If I took them,

others would think

such valuables could please me.

That bracelet is the opposite.

They think I'm not greedy at all.

I deserve the best things in the world.

You're brilliant.

You can always

prettify your greed so well.

You...

You're mean.

Hey, you.

I'll take my usual spot.

I'm really sorry, sir.

He's booked the whole floor.

You may eat downstairs, sirs.

Fine.

This way, please.

(Lu Yun)

We've followed that Beichu trade caravan

all the way here.

They should enter the city today.

They pretend to be a caravan for trade,

so someone must be in town to pick up the goods.

When their carriages arrive,

we'll follow them.

Yes.

Whatever it takes,

I'll find out who the traitor is

today.

(The caravan has got in.)

They're in.

There they are.

They aren't afraid of committing treason

- Move! - to smuggle saltpeter to Beichu.

I bet they're up to something even bigger.

Let's go.

Yes.

(Tingyu House)

- Miss Luo! - Miss Luo! Miss Luo!

Zhao Yuan, follow them.

Yes.

Who's this man

going so over the top

to draw my attention?

"Large as the peony is,

it's useless with an empty branch."

She got in my way.

Miss Luo,

you're indeed blessed.

Young Master Fan is so eager to marry you

that he's had 100 cases of betrothal gifts sent to the Luo's.

How sweet!

He can't wait to tie the knot with you.

Tomorrow is your wedding day!

Great!

Congratulations!

I knew it.

Ever since I became old enough to marry,

Fan Qingchen has come to propose every year.

I could make excuses to stall the wedding,

but now that I'm 24,

it can't be delayed anymore.

(Map of Shuozhou)

(That girl ruined my plan.)

(Has Zhao Yuan kept up with them?)

I can't believe Miss Luo is

going to marry Young Master Fan.

Wake up. She'll never marry you.

You...

("Marry Young Master Fan"?)

Miss Luo didn't take these flowers.

Let's give them to this gentleman.

Here you go, sir.

No, thanks. No, no, no...

(Luo Residence)

What to do?

Lingyu,

why are you back so late?

Young Master Fan has been waiting for you.

Come here!

Lingyu.

Greetings, Young Master Fan.

(Fan Qingchen)

Young Master Fan,

you're a charming young man.

Only beauties like Lingyu

can be your match.

Others are somewhat beneath you.

Indeed, indeed.

Don't you agree?

Lingyu,

I'm here with the letter of marriage.

The two of them are a perfect match.

Your wedding day is tomorrow.

Please sign the letter, Miss Luo.

(Letter of Marriage)

Lingxi, brush and ink, please.

Yes.

The two of you

will grow old together

and have tons of children

to expand your family.

Fortune will fill your house.

What's wrong, Lingyu?

Uncle, Aunt,

I remember

my late mother left a set of jewelry to me.

You said when I got married,

you'd pass it to me.

Will you keep your promise?

Yes, of course.

Yes.

Lingyu,

sign the letter.

I'll put that set of jewelry

in your dowry.

Yes, that's right.

Aunt,

Fan's betrothal gifts

stretch for miles.

In return, Luo's dowry

should match theirs.

If it's too little,

others will say

our family's fawning on the Fan Clan.

Young Master Fan will look like a fool.

Financially speaking,

although we aren't half as rich as them,

we can't make Young Master Fan look bad.

Well...

when she put it like that,

it was as if we disregarded his dignity.

We...

What are you waiting for?

You...

Fetch that set of jewelry!

Now!

I'm going.

- Hurry. - I'm going.

Lingyu,

I don't mind the things you just said,

but I'm so glad

that you care about me.

It's the least I can do

for you.

This is the full set.

I see.

I'm relieved now.

And the letter...

The letter?

(Signed by Fan Qingchen)

Take a look.

(Luo Lingyu)

Lingyu,

this day has finally come.

I think the same.

That ingrate

used the Fan Clan

to take away that set of jewelry from me!

I'm so mad!

Darling,

no pain, no gain.

We've got the money from the Fan Clan.

It's fine to give her some dowry.

Over here. Put them here. Here.

That's not right!

We found a perfect husband for her.

Instead of thanking us,

she's making us prepare her dowry.

How greedy and ungrateful!

Alright. You may leave.

- Yes. - Yes.

What a bunch of boneheads.

Darling,

you picked up a pile of new clothes earlier,

but they didn't fit, right?

Don't rub it in!

It's a pity to see them go to waste.

Stuff them in this case

as her dowry.

Fill it up with waste.

That'll do, right?

I'm packing up the stall, Miss.

I'll give you a discount.

No, thanks.

Young Master.

Did you find them?

That caravan made a swap halfway,

but

I managed to track down one man

who entered the Fan's.

Fan Mansion?

Those of Beichu are wildly audacious.

Whoever is in cahoots with them

must be rich or powerful.

I knew it.

Only the top Imperial Merchant Clan,

the Fan Clan, could act without scruple.

It's easy to obtain the map

but hard to sneak in.

The Fan Mansion is huge.

Four squads are guarding it in shifts.

I tried my best but failed to get in.

There's a perfect chance.

Tomorrow, their sole heir is

going to marry Miss Luo.

Fan's son is marrying Luo's daughter?

Tomorrow is our big day.

We can't bring too many things.

Mother left

this set of jewelry to us.

I'll put those pieces on

in case Uncle and Aunt get suspicious.

I'll bring my toy, Yellow.

I'll pack up all our valuables.

A thousand days' training

is for one day's battle.

We've waited for so long to act tomorrow.

Keep up.

Come on!

Don't be so slow.

This is it, the biggest case.

Why should I hide inside?

- You're thin. - Me?

When the wedding sedan reaches Chen's stall tomorrow,

(Grocery Stall)

- people will surround it - Give us something.

to get food, drinks, and money.

(Surround) Share your luck.

Lingxi,

sneak out with our belongings beforehand.

Hire a horse to wait here.

When the sedan is surrounded,

I'll get out with Hua.

When I ride,

no one can stop me.

Remember to rent a boat.

We'll meet you at the dock.

- Understand? - Yes, My Lady.

Listen, the goods

in the warehouse and the account book in the study

are most important.

Let's split up.

I'll take the study. You, the warehouse.

Yes.

Be sharp and swift tomorrow.

Do not make any mistakes.

Hua, be swift tomorrow.

Stay close to me.

Make sure the dowry

enters the Fan Mansion, understand?

To be safer,

Lingxi,

tie another horse outside the Fan's tomorrow.

Yes, My Lady.

(Fan Mansion)

Remember, the sooner the better.

This case looks airtight.

Yes.

A girl's getting married.

Her dowry case looks big,

but only clothes are in it,

and they're so old-fashioned.

What a stingy family.

I'm getting in.

Careful.

Young Master,

sleep tight.

(Luo Residence)

Why hasn't she come out?

Right.

(Double Happiness)

Sister.

Let's go.

Use more strength.

Why is it so heavy?

One more time. Try again.

I'll go check.

What's wrong?

It's too heavy.

I'll try.

(Is my dowry so heavy?)

This case is heavier than others.

It must be filled with my dowry.

I thought Uncle and Aunt

would send me away with empty cases,

but they prepared so many things

for the sake of the Fan Clan.

Miss Luo,

it's about time.

Please hurry up.

Carry it.

Yes, My Lady.

Hua, let's go.

Sure.

- Come on. - Yellow.

Let's go.

Calm down.

Finally, we can marry her off.

(Luo Residence)

You two come here.

Be careful.

It's the dowry from Mr. and Mrs. Luo.

Don't drop it.

The time has come.

Heaven and earth are watching.

(Luo Residence) The sunlight shines on the sedan.

Fortune will be granted.

Rise.

Those four cases of dowry

for Fan's betrothal gifts. It's a great deal!

Congratulations, Miss Luo!

Best wishes!

(We've arrived at the stall.)

Come on.

- Come. - Young Master,

- we're surrounded. - Curtains are spread.

The sedan's surrounded.

The bride's dressed up

to marry Young Master Fan.

Good!

Congratulations, sir!

(Looks like step one succeeded.)

(Succeeded)

Sister.

Congratulations.

It's time to act.

(Can I get into the Fan's?)

There's money! Money!

- Whose servant is that? - Money!

He's dropping money. Let's go!

- Come! - Money over there!

(Why did they run away?)

Over here.

Come here.

Where did that clumsy servant come from?

Sister, what to do?

Over here.

(Zhao Yuan is being swift.)

Rise. Make way.

The sedan is up.

Let's go.

Keep going. I haven't got any money.

(Go away, everyone.)

(Enter the mansion.)

(Young Master can't hold it anymore.)

(Can I get into the Fan's now?)

(Luckily, I asked Lingxi to prepare)

(another horse yesterday.)

(Succeeded)

(Failed)

(Fan Mansion)

Lingyu,

we've arrived.

Sister!

Sister, don't leave me!

- Hua, listen to me. - Sister.

Step one failed.

I can only count on you now.

Go get some firewood.

Why hasn't Miss Luo got off?

We can't be late.

Yes. What's happening?

Young Master Fan, we can't be late.

You're right, Lingyu.

Fortune has been bestowed.

The bride can get off.

(Fan Mansion)

Congratulations!

What a perfect match!

What a perfect match!

She's gorgeous.

Bow to each other!

Complete!

Congratulations!

Let me take you to your room.

Don't cry.

Come back to visit us.

Where's that wild Luo Yunhua?

Did she run away again?

Don't worry. It's her sister's big day.

She won't ruin it.

I can hardly walk!

Keep going.

Let's go.

(Finally, I'm in.)

(I have to find the study fast.)

Sister said to choose an important room.

Do it outside without hurting anyone.

(Siqi Chamber)

There it is.

I'll go get more.

(A tiger in the bridal chamber?)

(How bizarre!)

My Lady,

this is the bridal chamber.

This is it.

Careful.

You may take a rest.

Young Master Fan

will come after the banquet.

Thank you so much.

Make yourself at home.

(Let's see what valuables)

(Uncle and Aunt prepared for me.)

(Pack them up before leaving.)

What...?

(I knew they wouldn't be so nice to me.)

It's just clothes.

Not heavy at all.

(To Fan Qingchen)

(This room is near the corner gate.)

(Although guards are everywhere,)

(it's possible to sneak out in chaos.)

(These head jewelry is too heavy.)

(They will slow me down when I run.)

Who is it?

Stop right there!

No wonder my dowry was heavy.

You stole everything!

(A thief?)

(That's help from heaven!)

the study...

Help!

Catch the thief!

Go! Catch him!

Where is it? Catch him!

- Go! - Catch him!

Catch the thief!

- Catch the thief! - Catch the thief!

Catch the thief!

Go! Catch him!

Who is the thief?

Catch the thief!

- Catch the thief! - Help!

- Where's the thief? - Come on!

- Still looking. - Catch him!

No one shall find

- any trace of Beichu. - Yes.

- The bride ran away! Catch her! - There!

Help! She's gone!

The bride ran away...

The study.

- How dare he set me up! - Catch him!

Catch the thief!

Help! The bride ran away!

She ran away?

Go to the bridal chamber.

Come on. Let's go.

Catch the thief!

Thief? Catch him first.

- Yes. Over there. - Catch him!

Catch the thief!

(Siqi Chamber)

Who put firewood outside the study?

A Luban Lock.

Hua.

Hua!

Hua!

Sister!

Sister!

Where's the firewood?

Over there.

Why are they looking for the bride?

He's smart.

I'm not dumb either.

Let's make a fire and...

Sister!

It's knocked down, Sister!

First, a thief stole my dowry.

Then someone messed up the firewood.

It's fine. Calm down.

This is only a little setback.

Saltpeter?

(Fan's Account Book)

(Fan's Account Book)

(Grains, Fabric, Medicine)

(North Army in Jingyang)

800...

Help! The thief's in the study!

Catch him!

That girl again!

Thief! Catch the thief!

Hua!

He's in the study!

I should've had Xian do divination

- before I left. - Thief!

- I've been in bad luck since I arrived. - Thief!

Catch the thief!

Who's there?

The thief escaped.

Find him and silence him.

Yes. Let's go!

You,

bring back my bride.

Yes, sir.

Young Master.

Did you find it?

Let's go.

Put on the mask to be safe, Young Master.

Sure.

Come on, Hua. We have to get out.

Run!

The horse Lingxi got should be near.

Over there, Sister!

Let's go.

There it is. Hop on, Sister.

Hua, this one is faster.

I knew I could trust Lingxi.

Where did she get a fine horse?

Sister, I'm a bit scared.

We're descendants of a hero.

Nothing can scare us.

She managed to get out.

That young lady is a charming rider.

That's my horse!
