Why is it going so fast?

We're meeting Christian and Jessica Bishop.

They've got a camp

that they need some help with.

Can't work miracles, but when you're inside,

you look out, you can't even see the lake.

So we are over in Oakland

and we're meeting Christian and Jessica Bishop.

They've got a camp, tiny little thing

that they need some help with.

Well, if tiny, we can ride these for a little bit more, right?

So tell us what's going on here.

We bought this place about eight years ago

and it needed a lot of help

and we've really tried to do some things,

but it's beyond our scope.

We... We're just trying to save it.

There aren't a lot of cottages

like this in Maine anymore.

People tear 'em down

and they put up new modern places

and we're trying to maintain the character.

To tear it down would be horrible

'cause you couldn't get this close to the water.

So many memories here with our family

-and friends that we just... -Uh-huh.

want to keep the party going,

- having fun. - Absolutely.

We have six kids. Yeah.

And we probably have, without exaggerating,

15 to 20 little nieces and nephews.

Coming here in the summertime

is the highlight of their year.

Do you know when the camp was built?

- We know it's the 1930s. - Wow.

And we think the patios

were built and added on, probably early '80s.

The camp was built in the '30s you said so, you know,

we'll have to be cautious and test for lead paint

because it was built before 1978 and just, you know,

make sure we do everything safely

when we start getting into demo.

What needs help? What are you looking to have done?

You can't work miracles.

Um, but we hope that you can--

But the roof line has been an issue for us.

We have water issues, um, and it's just so shallow.

We're hoping to maybe get that raised up.

At the same time, underneath needs help.

Some of them are failing.

It looks like the windows are--

Those windows have completely failed.

Somebody's gonna lose a finger.

Opening and closing those and--

And they look like braces

on the front of the house. Honestly.

They kind of do.

So I'd like to have something safe.

Unfortunately, when you're inside,

you look out, you can't even see the lake.

it's like you got to look just right--

You gotta look through the porch.

So we wanna actually open the whole thing up

out into the front porch and the back porch.

And I guess it would be really great if the kitchen

could be pushed back where the back porch is

just to have more living space.

It's really low ceilings

and I'm hoping it can be opened up.

Make it feel bigger.

Maybe have a little loft area in there.

We had put a little bathroom in it

when we bought the place

and we would love to have that

be a little bit bigger.

It is just teeny tiny.

And this is a seasonal place?

It's seasonal,

-but we use it every season. -We use it in the winter.

Yeah.

Well, because we come down and do ice fishing.

What does it have for heating?

Uh, we have a little propane stove

- just in the main room. - Yeah.

Which is enough to keep it warming up

-for winter ice fishing? -It's more enough

to keep it warm. Yeah.

Is there anything you want to save?

We want keep that character of all wood.

And I really hope you don't throw out Fred the fish.

When we first got the place,

there was a really old taxidermied fish in there

and I want to keep him.

Is this mutual? Do--

No. I don't like Fred. Fred is gross.

Well... Wait, but she thinks it's gross.

Only because he's a little dusty,

he's missing an eye.

But I get worried she wants to throw 'em out

and I'm thinking, "Well, when I'm older,

will she gonna throw me out?" Right?

It's a sign.

I will go back and dig 'em out

of a dumpster and bring 'em back

if you guys try to throw it out on us.

As far as colors, we are wide open.

-Really? -Have fun with it.

Be careful what you wish for.

Nothing fluorescent though, clearly.

I mean, we got some limits here.

I've never chosen a fluorescent color.

So how much do you have for this renovation?

- So our budget is $80,000. - Okay.

When are you hoping to have the camp finished by?

Well, we'd like to be able to use it in the summer.

You know, we have family up.

That's just the whole point.

Yeah. I think end of June,

we'll say 12 weeks.

Starting from the ground up,

jack, repost the camp,

level everything up,

increase the roof,

try and get some more space inside.

Get rid of these windows, rearrange it,

so you're really taking advantage

of the view of the water.

Keep the cabin feel and make sure we keep Fred.

So I mean demo day will tell.

On the interior of the camp,

we're going to tear off

the front porch and the back porch.

Expand the living space, push the kitchen back,

increase the size of the bathroom,

and add a loft for more sleeping space.

Let's see what's going on outside here.

That back is definitely sitting on the ground.

And there's no pitch to that roof line whatsoever.

On the exterior, we're going to jack

and level the camp.

Add new windows

and a new metal roof.

We brought most of the crew today

to the Bishop camp to tear off the front porch

and the back porch.

We also have a new crew member joining us today.

Camp was built in the 1930s,

front porch and the back porch were added

sometime in the '80s.

Tested it. There's no lead paint.

getting the camp emptied out.

So we just need to tackle the front,

tackle the back, and go from there.

So just start ripping it apart.

So we're tearing the porch off.

It just had old storm windows in there.

We took all the aluminum storms out,

taking out every other support.

Just beat them out.

was for walls.

Until we get it opened up, we really don't know

what we're gonna be able to do.

They want an enlarged the bathroom.

So we need to rip the porch off

so that we can get access underneath,

jack level it and possibly widen our bigger bathroom.

It's week three of the Bishop camp,

Brad and the guys have finished demo

on the back porch.

Come on, baby.

There's an 8 by 8 beam that's in pretty good shape.

We'll set that aside and see if we can use it later.

The guys have started jacking and leveling.

It was definitely wet to start,

but they got everything

pucked, releveled, jacked.

Coming one at, like, 10 and...

- 10 and an 8. - 10 and an 8.

Now, everything's nice and level.

It's going nicely.

Wow, it looks way better, huh?

Oh, yeah. This camp's looking way straighter now.

It's week four at the Bishop camp

and the guys have framed up a new platform

where the back porch used to be.

Next step is to open up the back wall

and install a carrying beam that will help

support the weight of the new addition.

Over the next week, they'll frame up

the walls and the roof.

This will give plenty of room to push back

the kitchen and expand the bathroom.

It's week five at Bishop camp.

The back condition is all done.

On the front side, they've got the floor deck down

and the walls for the first floor.

So today we are going to rip off the roof

to get our floor rafters in for the new loft space.

186 and three-eighths.

Go 186.

So we're putting in 8 by 8 hemlock beam

to support all the weight.

So we can open up this room

and then throw in our rafters

for the second floor loft.

It's brutally heavy.

It gets heavy when it's dead weight.

I'm firing up, but I'm not lifting

- to this end by myself. - I'm fine right now.

Once we got that in,

the guys could get up top

and start ripping off

the front portion of the roof.

And then we are going to throw in our rafters

for the second floor lofts.

I'm just getting them up here,

and then we'll figure out layout.

There's a lot of flex, a lot to play in here.

So what we're doing is we're gonna run

these new hemlock beams in here,

set some new floor joists for the, uh, loft

and get a little more rigidity out of the ceiling.

Yup.

Our last beam is stopping here.

Lovely.

And then what we're gonna do

is we're gonna create a headed off

opening right here for our access to the loft.

That is just perfect.

The middle is sagging.

We had a beefier LVL

- to get from that to that wall. - -Mmm-hmm.

Then we wouldn't have to worry so much

because right now we've got that peak.

So if we had something beefier,

we wouldn't have to worry about so much weight

being put on that.

You know, there's definitely a smile to the house.

There really wasn't much support

so it definitely had a sag.

So we needed to get a new beam

in to carry the weight of the roof lines.

So right now we're just temporarily

supporting the existing roof

so that we can tear out this old support,

the ridge line.

Watch your feet, Chase.

Just look at the step.

We can start framing up

for the new roof line.

There was an 8 by 8 on site.

It was on the bottom of the camp,

probably, I don't know. What do you think?

Chase wants to reuse a beam

that was used in the camp.

It was on the bottom of the camp

and now he wants to reuse it for the top.

It was one that had been a carrying beam

under the back porch.

Right now we're just using jacks

to manipulate the beam

and we're putting some posts up underneath it.

Literally, the heavy lifting is done

at this point.

Everything's structurally supported well.

Once we know that's the case,

then it's pretty straightforward

as far as framing up the roof,

closing it in, putting in the windows,

and getting going on siding.

So we're here at Bishop today

and we're just working on sheathing in the floor.

Now, we can build our outer wall,

that way we can get all of our ridge poles on

so then we can continue with our rafters.

Over the last few days,

things are moving nicely.

Today we are focusing on putting in the windows

and getting going on siding.

There'll be windows across the front.

Everything's gonna get covered over

with the rustic clapboards.

You wanna try and put that clapboard on as straight

as you can go up,

Never been in a taxidermy place before.

You get in the right place it looks like.

I'm not sure if they're gonna be able to do anything with Fred,

but we're gonna try to bring him back to life.

I saw the fish in there.

If he comes back anything like those fish,

he's gonna be a nice looking fish.

What you got here?

This is Fred.

It's a little one, it's in rough shape.

He's missing an eyeball.

Some of his fins have fallen Off.

It's like he's seen better days.

- Right? - Yeah.

So normally, on something like this,

what I would do is I would take this head right here off

and replace with an artificial head.

-All right. -Which is something like this.

- Obviously, a lot smaller. - Okay.

Replace that and I'd replace his fins, too.

And then what about the eyeball?

Where do you get fish eyeballs?

So I order the eyes.

These are two big fish, fish

- but they're a glass eye. - Oh.

I come in and put 'em in there

and you do the epoxy work around it.

I strip all this paint off and I'd repaint it.

There's probably 20, 25 different colors

that'll go into that.

You know, cats have nine lives.

Maybe fish have two or three.

-Fred. -He's gonna be happy.

It's week nine at the Bishop camp

and I got invited to come over and hang out.

Over the last couple days,

Jake's given the camp a coat of stain

and painted the trim of green.

We've had a bunch of wet, rainy weather lately

so we're gonna try to get the roof on.

There's one pitch on the front,

but with this additionally built in,

comes in a different pitch.

So now we have a valley.

So we have Brad right there's

bringing the two valleys together.

Most of the times we do roofs, there's no cuts on the bottom,

it's just square, square, square.

You put a panel up, put a panel up, put a panel up.

These you have to cut out a square the whole time

'cause you gotta get the slope going up each valley.

All right, write this down, buddy.

Corbin got everything, 249,

220 and a half, and Ryan is awesome.

I was getting the shower valve roughed in ready.

I'm gonna put this in so they can board around it.

Gotta put the sinks and flushes in

once they get it ready

and we're doing good on this job.

It's week 10 at the Bishop Camp.

Jedi and Brad are working on the waterside steps.

The exterior is pretty much wrapped up,

siding is done.

And on the inside, it's looking good.

The floors are going in.

Dixie's putting in kitchen cabinets,

windows, walls are pretty much closed in.

It's just flooring down here

and a little bit of closing in up in the loft.

So today we are installing the kitchen cabinet.

What we're doing

is shimming the bottom three-quarters of an inch,

which is the thickness of the floor.

So basically, the cabinets will be like they're sitting

on top of the floor.

We don't have to wait for the floor to go down.

So it's gonna save us a little bit of time.

Woo. That was a close one, Doug.

Brad, what are you doing?

Don't catch it on camera.

The Bishops have their fishing poles kinda just everywhere

and I am here to make a fishing pole rack.

So I thought it would just be nice

to have one place where they can just put them,

where they can maintain them and keep 'em safe.

This is a template.

Put it on here and then trace it out,

so they're all... They're all the same.

I made seven little slots,

and then from there, after I traced it out,

I marked it on the other piece of wood

and then was able to go and put the template down

where I'd marked it

so that they would match on both sides.

We'll cut this out.

After that, I cut two pieces and adds it at the backboard.

And then Dixie and I screwed 'em together.

and catch a nice friend for Fred.

The stairs came together real nice.

They're wide enough and they're gonna be a good entrance

in and out of the camp.

He looks like he just came out of the lake.

You really need a little taxidermy in every camp.

I was kind of holding him

because I wanted to surprise the guys

and I hit his fin

and I must have knocked it off.

And then when I was showing the guys,

I kind of noticed that he was missing a fin.

It was in good shape.

we're looking for a fin in a lawn.

and they just really combined nicely

The Bishops had $80,000 in 12 weeks

to get this cabin renovated.

They were looking for more space,

an addition off the front, off the back,

larger bathroom, more windows,

looking out over the water,

lot space for additional sleeping,

and try and keep as much

of the wood interior as possible.

They're gonna be pulling up on their boat any second.

I didn't even realize we were going towards it.

This is incredible.

It's just such a huge surprise,

honestly, like we just didn't know what to expect.

Oh, my gosh, I'm so excited.

And we're looking for our little white place

with the little metal windows and I knew it had changed,

but honestly, like this is everything

that I could have wanted and more.

I'm pulling up?

I mean, the camp is much bigger than it was.

you know, first thing we did came in here,

we tore off that front porch,

we tore off the back porch.

Jacked and leveled the camp and rebuilt from there.

-Amazing. -You know, we went

with this natural eastern white pine siding,

nice golden brown stain.

New windows across the front, new roof,

new side entrance here.

-I love it. That is so great. -He nailed it.

So when we first got into it,

you know, it was built before 1978,

so we tested for lead.

We did find a few spots where there's lead,

but we followed EPA regulations and guidelines

to make sure we dealt with it properly.

So it's all good to go.

We notice all your fishing poles lying around,

so you walk around to the other side of the camp.

- Oh, hey. - -So, this is awesome.

-I love it. -You don't know how many times we cooked

over fishing poles.

This is great. We love kids.

This is what this is all about.

But let me tell you, they lay 'em everywhere.

I know.

I cannot wait to see the inside.

There's so much more to see.

Anybody else who comes by

and tries to find our old camp,

they're not gonna recognize it

because it's that different.

So before this was just that wall

in between the porch and the living area.

- That's right. - -I just couldn't believe it.

I mean, what we had before,

we couldn't even see out of 'em.

It's just beautiful looking out on the water.

We got like a real little kitchen.

He's actually really cool.

This was another porch area.

It was all closed off,

so we headed it off with some nice big beefy beams,

got a enlarged bathroom.

Oh, my goodness.

-You can actually like-- -So guys, look...

-Watch this. Watch this. -we could all fit in here.

Not that we all need to at the same time.

Yeah, that was very nice.

This is functional.

Having a really truly

functional bathroom is important.

You try to get in the shower,

the shower curtain would like stick to you

and it was kind of gross.

Just having that expanded bathroom

makes it a much more pleasant experience.

The bedrooms, hon.

I love this. This is cozy.

We haven't officially given you the cabin back

if we head outside and we can give you the keys,

I knew that they would do some great work,

they've done great work,

but this was just over the top for me.

So when we first started,

you know, we said 12 weeks, $80,000.

You were looking to make more space,

really take advantage of the water view

on the lakeside, loft, sleeping space.

I think our work here is done.

We just have to hand the keys back.

We have a large blended family,

lots of kids, lots of nieces, nephews,

and we didn't buy this place just for us.

We truly bought this for them.

And so my hope and wish

is that we can have them continue to come.

And the camp was really falling down

and I just don't think

that it would've lasted another 10 years.

So by having the Maine Cabin Masters come in

and do what they did,

I now know that this thing is preserved

not just for now, but for the future.

It's just incredible.
