He said, "You've got a large hemlock

that's fallen onto your roof.

I mean, it was coming down in sheets.

The weather's costing us time and more money.

- Wow. - Oh, my God.

We got the fancy kayak.

I know how I ride around here.

What, you guys think I needed the arm workout today,

-so I get this one? -It's a leg day for us.

Look how comfy those seats are.

Today, we are

on Upper Narrows in Winthrop.

And we are meeting David Leach

and his daughter and two grandchildren.

His parents bought the land in the '60s,

they ended up building a cabin in the '70s.

And this winter,

a tree fell on their cabin.

-Oh, no. -Messed up a few of rafters

and poked some holes on the roof.

They patched that over, but they figured

they'd take this opportunity to, uh,

kind of update the camp.

It's good job security for us though, right?

- It is. - A couple more of these

in a year, maybe you can get me

a kayak like yours.

This isn't even a fair race.

Some of us are arriving in style,

and I got an old kayak.

So it looks like you had a tree fall on the roof.

What happened?

Middle of October,

The big windstorm overnight,

and the top of it caught, broke off,

and landed right

-on the centerline of the roof. -Yowza.

Luckily, you're able to get here and cover it up

before too much damage inside happened?

- Absolutely. - You worried

about any of these other trees doing that?

- Yes. - -We need to take some down?

- Possibly? - Well, obviously,

tree issue with the roof needs to be addressed.

It looks like it's fairly level,

it's on good posting. It's high and dry,

so one less thing we really have to worry about.

What are you looking to have done?

Well, as you look at the north side of the camp,

we have two tiny bedrooms,

and we'd like to go out 10 feet,

so it would be a 10 by 20 foot addition.

- Oh, jeez. - And if it's not asking too much

we'd like to expand that teeny bathroom.

We'd like to have a whole new roof installed

with a little steeper pitch,

a new exterior, new windows.

And we'd actually like to go up

and have a grandchildren's,

- kids-only sleeping loft... - Oh, nice.

with a west-facing dormer.

The family keeps growing and we need more space,

that's for sure.

Is there a heat sources currently?

There's a heat source that I don't use.

It's a gas heater,

and I'm not a real fan of having the big gas tank

next to it, so if there was another

type of heating system that you could think of,

-I'm all for it. -Okay.

The deck looks fairly new.

Yes. We tend to come out here after work or school,

but we always struggle with having shade back here.

Do you want steps off your front deck?

Yes. And we'd like to improve the waterfront,

erosion control, the path.

Anything that you guys can think of?

-Mini basketball hoop. -Fun. All right.

This is for their legacy,

someday for their children, and their children's children.

I spent every summer at this camp,

and I'm really happy that my kids can grow up here too

and have that same experience.

We're going to add a 10-foot addition

off to the north side,

enlarge the bedrooms and bathroom,

and we're also going to bump up

the roof lines to add a loft space.

On the exterior, we're gonna add a new metal roof,

new siding, new windows,

and add some erosion control landscaping on the waterside.

So it's demo day at the Leach camp.

The plan for today is to strip the roof.

Strip that roof.

Hence why we're holding these strippers?

We're here first thing with tarps, ladders,

everything we need to get started on the roof.

Let's lay some tarps down and strip it.

Are we gonna tear the roof off...

Paul rolled in with the dump trailer,

Paul recently joined the crew.

Forty-six nails in a 10-foot piece of drip edge.

It's outrageous.

They got a little crazy with their nailing pattern.

They would be fired from my crew

if I saw this many nails on a piece of drip edge.

It's not very cost-effective,

time efficient, and, uh,

if you're doing demo, it takes a lot more

elbow grease to rip it off.

Quickest turnaround ever.

the young kids here,

it would have taken them five times

as long as us old guys.

You know, I got here a little bit late.

Not only did I time the roofing right,

but my buddy Harry showed up

right after that and got me out of more work.

We have a tight schedule and a lot of trees

that need to come down.

So we have a 10 foot by 20 addition...

That one's leaning over the fire pit

and it's dangerous, and there's one more dead one

around here we gotta find. I think right down

Anything next to the house, obviously,

you can clean it up.

That'll look good, that'll elevate

and create a better view for 'em, absolutely.

because the young girl,

Finley, whose birthday is August 19th,

-so we're trying to get it done by then. -They want it done by then.

So your timeframe on these specifically...

these in a week or two, and then come back

and do the rest of them? That'll keep us building.

Roof's all stripped,

it looks like Dave got everything out of here,

so we're gonna get in here, rip this carpet out.

Archaeological demolition shows us

another layer of carpet,

and I think I might even see more of linoleum down there.

A smart carpeter knows to cut it in sections.

The only people that bring carpets out in full

rolls are doing something they shouldn't be doing,

so if you see a neighbor doing that,

you might wanna call the police.

There's two guys trying to drag something,

like they're not trying to save an old carpet.

of people stripping a roof for our crew in a long time.

so we can start framing out our new pitch,

Since we've been here and have stripped the roof,

we had Mike come in

and set some posts for the addition.

Then we had a tree removal service come in.

Cutting down some of the trees made the camp safer

and definitely improved the view.

to frame up the addition

and get the walls all built.

The boys were able to get it all sheathed in.

It's gonna be a much bigger camp,

so props to the boys.

They're doing an excellent job.

Today, we're over here

giving Brad and the boys a hand.

We're tearing the roof off.

Gonna be some pressure on that, buck.

They've put an addition on,

so we're removing this old roofline.

So the roofline in the addition

roofline will be as one.

To do that, we have to strip it right

back down to just plates and walls.

Put those to the side.

We were cutting it up into sections.

So, we are at the Leach camp today and it's week five.

And today we are working on the roof.

Second floor loft system has been framed up.

Today's finishing off decking over the loft

and starting on roof rafters.

I've got an awning company stopping by.

It's an awning company right in Auburn, Maine.

If this roof pitch idea we have works,

they're looking at the possibility

of doing an awning over this deck.

-Sweet. -Awesome.

So first step is finishing off decking over the loft.

So we have a Maine company here

today and they do awnings.

-How are you? -Good. Good to see you.

There's a 14 by 10 deck

on the front of the camp

and having an awning

just helps with sun, helps with weather.

So they're stopping by today

to see if it's possible.

So you can see

we're raising the pitch of the roof,

so we tore the whole thing off.

That part's gonna be dormered over there,

but this is the deck space and we thought,

you know, it'd be great to have a little awning

right here just to extend the life of the deck.

Absolutely. Putting a retractable awning up

is an awesome addition.

Takes the inside living space,

stretches it right out into the deck.

-Perfect. -So a few questions for you,

what kind of roof are you gonna be

putting on here?

-Metal screw down roofing. -Okay.

So typically, we don't mount to metal

just because of liability reasons.

Jeepers.

So we have something in mind for you.

Is there any way that we can add

a touch more height to this wall?

- What's a touch? - Well, so this wall

is about seven and a half feet.

I like my awnings to be around 8 feet.

That's about all we can get you.

If you can do that, we'll be going onto the wall.

We were talking about doing a 4 by 6

rim around the entire perimeter.

Yeah, I think 8 feet is pretty much what...

Okay. If we can mount into that,

then we'll just do a traditional awning here.

You guys thought about what color you want

- for the awning on the south? - Uh, color.

We don't let Chase pick out colors.

Oh, here she is.

So today I came over to the jobsite,

so that I could meet with the awning guys.

All I had to do was kind of pick out a color.

If Chase chose the color, you never know

what he's gonna choose.

-I like that one. -I have an awning

with almond frame and a sand dune fabric.

I think that'd be a nice neutral option

-for the wood siding here. -Yup.

Finley said she wanted orange for a camp color,

and I just know that an almond color

would look nice with that.

-That was easy. -First one, it's easy.

-Sold. -If Chase had done it,

it probably would've been, uh, purple.

-I like purple. -Hey, we like purple.

-I fully support going purple. -We could tell, your shirt.

-It brings out my eyes. -That's no problem.

We're going to increase the height

of the front wall a little bit

to give 'em enough space to get the awning in.

So you'll just close this in,

then you'll just bring your rafters right to that.

Once we get that set,

then we get pattern cut out for the rafters.

We want to make sure this lines up clean here.

That works.

but once we get that done,

it's sheathing, framing, and siding.

Brad and the boys have done a great job

at getting the new roof all prepped.

That is good.

They've also started installing the new windows.

Today, we're gonna be installing the metal roofing.

We're installing a five-rib metal screw down roof.

Everything has been already ordered to cut,

so there'll be very little cutting involved.

It really is gonna--

Careful. That's probably a sharp edge.

It's pretty easy installation.

Put your drip edge down.

The guys on the ground handing panels up,

and we've got inch-long screws,

so none of the screws will poke through

the sheathing on the inside.

Looking at the weather forecast,

it looks like we may have some bad weather coming in.

We're just gonna try and get this roof on,

so she's weather tight.

Love it.

- Is that what you want? - Perfect.

Weather's been really bad.

We got 4 inches of rain yesterday.

The guys worked through the rain in rain suits.

I mean, it was coming down in sheets.

but with the Leach camp,

every day is usually rainy.

You know, we just fight our way,

the Maine way, little ingenuity.

I'm really proud of the guys.

They work through the rain in rain suits.

We find ways to get through,

you know, there's no bad weather,

just bad clothing and bad gear.

the Youth Conservation Corps.

Just had torrential rain,

so we're just trying get more and more

erosion control right now.

It's just coming

in sheets down through there, right?

The water we're on, Upper Narrows

is actually the source of drinking water

for the town of Winthrop, so it's all about stabilizing

the shoreline and mitigating

the flow of rainwater and debris into the lake.

So we're gonna make a nice meandering path

that water can hit and flow off from.

Trigger, what are you doing?

He likes digging holes, but not in the right spots.

And in the bay areas we're gonna put

erosion control mulch.

Trigger.

And then where the boat traffic

and ice has beaten up the shoreline,

we're gonna pack some more rocks in it.

On the inside of the camp,

Brad and his team are sheathing up the walls.

You know, no good deed goes unpunished.

We're trying to get this done

and it's just taking everything we got.

We've got Weston and Alex here today working with us.

Right on, boys.

And we are going to try

and bang out some floors.

Get the place finished off with the staining exterior

and the awning company's gonna show up today

to hopefully install the awning.

Very straightforward.

We use 12-inch shiplap rough side up,

base nailing it down.

You know, divided into two bedrooms

in the main room,

so it really was just cut and go.

Would you look at that now?

- Morning, guys. - Morning.

-Good to see you. -Morning. What's happening?

-How are you? -Couldn't have timed it better.

Summer Space showed up today

to install the awning over the front porch.

This is gonna work great.

So give us about an hour and we'll get this up.

- That's it? - That's it.

They love spending time outdoors on the waterside.

On a sunny day, the awning

gives them a little cover

when the sun's glaring down on 'em

and should be nice addition.

I love it.

So this remote is pretty easy to use.

Out, in, stop anywhere you want.

So when we send it out, limits are set.

It'll go out to the desired position

which is gonna be just beyond the railing.

And then, when this awning gets all the way out,

we also included a drop screen on this awning.

- Ha! - We keep it fancy.

- Yeah. Very nice. - That's it.

You don't wanna lose the remote control.

Okay. So I think it's 16-foot board.

We're gonna only need 14 feet.

I got a 2-foot drop or a 3-foot drop like that.

They're not really good to have

all the seams in a big room,

but in the bathroom, I'm just gonna do

a funky little pattern and use them up.

We'll put a bunch of poly on it, it'll look great.

It's all scrap.

It'll be kind of funky.

Boom.

Done.

And it's funky. It's a funky floor.

We like funky floors.

Now that the floors are done,

I'm starting to polyurethane the floors.

Just a dark stain.

I just wanna get them treated as quickly as possible

so they don't get scuffed up.

It's been a couple weeks since I've checked in

at Leach camp, so I wanted to come out today

and see how far along the progress has come.

I want to check on the color.

I chose a nice orange for the trim.

The orange is a little bit more red orange

than it looked when I chose it,

but I still really like it,

and I think it will work.

I got the basket.

Did you guys know basketball started with peach basket?

Bet you didn't.

So I really wanted to do something

for their grandson Grady.

He had one request

and that was for an indoor basketball hoop.

A hoop?

You wanna help me? Catch.

So let's talk about this.

- This will be ball storage. - Ball storage.

I found an old apple basket.

I brought it to the camp but it just...

It's gonna be too big for indoor.

So I settled on a small little one

that we purchased.

Okay.

Great placement.

This actually fits perfect in the camp.

At the Leach camp, we're pretty much

down to the end of it here.

Past couple weeks,

finished staining and polyurethaning the floors,

put in the loft railing,

put a set of stairs off the front of the deck,

and new cabinets.

Sweet.

to finish up the plumbing.

Gonna put the sinks and flushes in.

It fits.

Marvelous.

Getting used to the red and blue thing.

It's like I'm getting pulled over by an ambulance.

So our thoughts

are the heat pump could go

where the basketball hoop is.

You're gonna take down the hoop?

I am. I am.

-Oh, no. -It's a little too close

-to the kitchen anyways. -Right, right.

Yeah, the balls will be bouncing around.

We got rid of the propane heater.

We're gonna have a heat pump instead.

The condensing unit is on the exterior.

A place like this that has some insulation,

not a ton,

heat pumps are a good option.

Perfect.

Still plenty to do.

I don't think we're gonna make Finley's birthday.

We're a couple days later due to weather,

but we can still have a birthday celebration

for her at camp.

All right. So Lucy,

you are Finley's best friend?

Mmm-hmm.

So you really know what she likes?

So Lucy and Finley

are best friends.

I ran into Lucy the other day

and I asked her, you know,

what's Finley interested in?

And she said art.

So I was figuring

we could take this old bureau.

-Mmm-hmm. -And we could customize it

specially for her to make

-a little art bureau. -Yup.

-You like that idea? -Mmm-hmm.

This way she can store all of her art supplies

and have a little area that's just for her.

So I sand down the bureau.

All right. Now we just need to give it a quick wipe down.

with Finley's favorite color orange.

So not only is it gonna hold art supplies

but you'll also be able to do some art on it.

After the bureau's dry, it's gonna be ready to go.

So my team and I were able to come over

in the last day or two to get everything decorated.

We made one special corner for Finley.

We put the bureau

that Lucy and I remodeled for her

in the corner and turned it

to a magnificent art station.

That's cool.

I picked up a few gifts for Finley

for her birthday party and we are ready to give

the camp back to the Leach family.

Hot day at camp today, 90 degrees.

A delicious lobster roll lunch, yummy, yummy.

Found a journal and I was waiting around for Chase,

so I put a little entry in.

-Hi. -Hi. Oh, that's a good spot

- for the basketball hoop. - Isn't that cool?

Andy took my prototype basketball hoop,

put a Cabin Masters spin on it,

painted some lines on the backboard

We had $55,000 and 12 weeks

to renovate the Leach camp.

We added a 10 by 20 addition,

put a dormer on the west-facing side,

expanded the bedrooms, expanded the bathroom,

new floors, and painted with new siding.

Cabin Masters have officially finished the build

and are ready to return the cabin to the Leach family

and celebrate Finley's birthday.

This has been the longest summer

without the camp, hasn't it?

I'm so anxious to see what they've done.

I'm really happy to see the tarp off the roof.

We had the Friends of Cobbossee Watershed

Youth Conservation Corps come in,

put down some erosion control prevention.

Because when we put on the addition,

it kind of shifted everything anyways.

Put in this drip edge to help slow water down

going to the lake.

You know, we've always been great stewards

of the environment here.

And to have Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed

and their conservation corps to improve the waterfront,

I mean, that is what we're all about.

So pretty.

I am literally floored.

We got in here, tore the old roof off,

and then, we dropped a couple of those hemlocks.

Got the posts set and then put the addition

10 feet out that way.

New siding, new trim color, new windows.

The trim, we got a nice deep orange stain

because we know someone loves the color orange.

I like it.

Increased the pitch of the roof

and new metal roofing.

That's just everything we could ever imagine.

Once we came in here, we tore the roof off of it.

We ended up cathedraling ceiling,

new windows throughout, new kitchen, new countertops.

We went with a dark stain

- on the pine floors. - I love that.

You know, just something that can take

- the wear and tear. - Yeah.

Brand new loft area and a nice loft ladder

up to it. Bigger bedrooms downstairs.

It was very small.

The bathroom is so large and modern.

10-foot bumpout gave us so much room.

I bet you guys are pumped to see that.

You guys, this is crazy.

Lucy and I took this old bureau

and painted it orange for you.

And on the side is a chalkboard.

I really liked the art space that I got.

We just have a nice big area

for you guys up here. You can spread out.

Yes. It's huge.

Well, you guys, guess what?

There's even more surprises outside.

I'm coming.

Couldn't really have

like the whole family stay,

but now we can have, like, everyone there.

It's so cute.

- Look at our table. - So before, you know,

there wasn't a set of stairs on the deck.

We were able to cut into the railing,

put a new set of stairs off the deck,

so closer access to the waters.

And we know how much you love sitting outside,

so we had this awning installed for some shade.

Whoa.

We always struggle with having shade back here.

This is gonna be so perfect

for the nights that we come out here.

We like to sit outside and just knowing now

that we can do that comfortably,

so that's gonna be really awesome.

so many memories for me.

Spending my summers out here

and not really staying very long

because we never had places

that we could all kind of hang out and be together.
