Miami Dade Community College,

where we had
similar interests.

It was beyond friendship,
and he's like my brother.

[Drew] After losing
his best friend and fellow
actor far too young,

taking care of Julio's family

is a promise Andy
plans to keep.

[Drew] This is the kind
of thing she's probably
dreamed of doing

for a very long time,
but didn't know
where to start.

Jonathan wanted to be here.

He is sick.
He woke up this morning

with no voice.

Jonathan's actually just CG,
you know,

there is only one,
I just play my own twin.

I played a twin in a movie.

-What don't you do?

I think you've been nominated
for an Academy Award.

Wait, You've won a Grammy
as well, right?

I've won the Grammys,
the Latin Grammys , yes.

You've played
dramatic roles,

you've played comedic roles.

What's your first passion?

Was it acting, or?

As a child,
I used to go to the theater

and watch films
when I was very young.

All the time.

And they had these things
in Miami Beach,
where I grew up,

they had these
double features for kids,

I tapped into that passion
later on, you know.

And it was all because
of those early years
watching films,

The hero of that time
was Sean Connery

and his James Bond.

Later on, I got a chance
to work with Sean.

That was the intention,
right?

Right, of course.

You do get inspired by people
who came before you.

-You know?
-Yeah.

Like, if you wanted
to be a director, why not?

Learn it from the people.

As Francis Coppola
said to me once,

he said,
"You steal from the best."
You know?

[laughs]

So, you've known Julio
since Miami.

Yeah, we met in our first
year of college.

[Andy] I was taking
acting classes.

He's as great an actor
as I've ever worked with,

and I've worked with some
great actors, you know.

[Andy] They say like,
"A brother from
another mother."

Was it a year ago that,
unexpectedly,
that Julio passed away?

[Andy] No, it's been
more than a year.

He was at a party
at a neighbor's house here,

and he walked home.

He went to bed
and that was it.

He died in his sleep.

[Andy] I always wanted him
to be by my side,

-[Andy] you know?
-[Drew] Yeah.

[Andy] And those memories,
I cherish, you know,
all those times together.

I met Linda,
obviously when they
first started dating in Miami.

So, I've known her
and of course, their kids.

[Drew] So, what does Linda
need in her house?

Well, they have this garage
and this back area.

That could be a great
extension for the family.

So, the idea was to to do
like a sort of Julio Cave.

Yeah.

For Linda.

[Drew] In their main house
they just have
one living room?

[Andy] They have one living--
Well, they have a living room.

So now, that would alleviate
that part of the house,
you know.

Okay, hold on a second.

And so we've been
family since then.

it's a smaller garage, but...

In my opinion,
it's actually a good size.

For storage,
you actually have it

and, you know, for the kids,

We would have Friday night
and he would do
a cheese board.

Yeah.

My Julio is with me every day,
as I must say that
that doesn't...

and especially
when I'm acting,

I talk to him all the time
when I'm acting.

We met at
the Miami Dade Community
College South campus,

and there was a corner there.

They called it
the Cuban corner
because everybody was Cuban.

I'm Cuban.

And we started
becoming friends
right from the get-go.

We had similar interests,
similar sense of humor,

a similar point of view
of things, you know.
And it was beyond friendship.

He was like my brother.

You know,
acting was our passion.

So we were always
either reading
or working together.

Or if I was writing something,
he would be the first guy
I'd bounce it off of.

And he'd give me notes.

[singing in Spanish]

To this day, you know,
he's still doing it with me.

I have the benefit
of having him

like a direct beam.

He's like...

He's got a beam hooked up
directly into my body.

Well, you know...

You remind me
so much of Julio.

Bicho, leave me alone,
will you?

[laughs]

Geez, bicho always means bug,

but it's like
a term of endearment.

-Mm-hmm.
-[Drew] Yeah.

He was an extraordinary
individual.

-So much life,
-[Drew] Yeah.

you know, inside of him.

If we bring a bit of Julio's
energy to this, though,

like you're saying
he's the life of the party,

and there's so much love,
and what you guys have.

I think that that
would be an amazing space.

But we don't wanna
tell you too much.

a little work back here,

there's no choice.

If you don't have a place
to put some of the bins

We could create a little
small attic space up there

with a pull-down door,
so it's easily accessible.

for the garage door?

I would say either

additional french doors
or some sort of collapsible,
kind of, situation.

I have thought
about this area here,

which is to open it up
to the backyard.

is beautiful back there.

We always came over here.

He was always cooking,
barbecuing outside.

We played dominoes out here.

This is a hangout place.

This is the domino area.

It looks very simple,
but glorious.

He put that in a while ago.

I was thinking, if you had
a good-size French door,

and then just step
into this area and maybe
give her a kitchen here.

Maybe a barbecue here
or on that wall.

I am seeing from here,

the roof is in rough shape,
so we're probably
gonna have to rip that out.

Yeah, I did a lot of shingle
work back in the day.

When I came to LA,
one of the jobs that I landed,

to pay the rent and stuff,

a friend of mine,
he said,
"Hey, you need a job?"

I go, "Yeah."
And he said,

"I'm doing some work
as a roofer."

[Andy] Yeah, it was brutal.

You know,
you're out in the sun...

[Drew] Yeah.

And you're laying
asphalt shingles.

Well, it's what
you gotta do sometimes.

Well, the good thing is,

I literally think
we're gonna have this entire
roof cleared within an hour.

Because this is coming
up so easy.

[Drew] We have a full punch
list to get through today,
including the old garage door.

the opposite wall to make room
for the new French doors.

[Andy] I never used to have
a saw like that before.

That's intense, that saw.

we're adding floor joists

the new attic structure.

and a fabulous
entertaining space below.

and the kids to have it all.

And we plan
to give them just that.

we possibly can so it doesn't
feel like a garage.

reconnaissance
with the daughter.

takes it away
from being a garage.

it still has to function
as a garage.

Which is why
even with the flooring,

If we do vinyl,
it can give you
the beauty of hardwood,

So, how light or dark

would Linda wanna go
when it comes to flooring,
in the garage?

[Andy] I would argue that,

I mean, I would say that
she probably goes, there.

How high-tech
do you want this to be?

If you're talking about
a theater or a movie room.

We've got a nice,
big surface here.

We could do
like a massive 80-inch.

So what do you want for sound?

Surround sound.
You want to be surrounded
by the experience of the film.

You know,
all movies are mixed that way.

that just feels
kind of modern.

But I think
there's an opportunity

to also bring
warmth to the yard.

I would personally love to do
something that's gonna
tie us to the white oak.

some seating on either side.

So then, at that point,

I think you can tie
a little thing
in here like that,

and bring
like a 'V' to a post.

to a post of string lights,

plant a vine here
that eventually
will track over the top of it.

Julio was big

where they can really

have a journey
outside their home

and find a space
where they can entertain.

is finally starting
to take shape.

This is the phase
of the project

where you really start
to see things coming together.

You can see what the room
is going to look like.

We've got the drywall going up
so you can start to see
our surfaces,

and we'll mud it and paint it.

Before we get all that done,

we have to make sure
that everything is run

for our lighting,
for our sound.

an outdoor kitchen over here.

Andy was saying
that Linda loves vines
that he has

that crawl
along the string lights.

And so, he'd love to have
something like that
for her in her yard.

-Hedges and then a lot of
smaller shrubs, herbs.
-Okay.

I don't think we're gonna
put those in the garden.

-We'll pot them.

Because then she can move
them around
if she wants to, so.

Do you have photos
of the space?

[Drew] So, lots of options.

[Melody] The bougainvillea,
absolutely beautiful
right now.

Summertime, gorgeous.

If we're looking at year-round
interests, in the wintertime,

it does look
a little bit lackluster.

Oh.

I'd lean towards definitely
the trumpet vine.

It's a vigorous grower.

It's clean.

And you'll get
kind of these biannual
purple blooms out of it.

Oh okay. So, twice the year
you get the bloom,

I'm assuming then
the purple trumpet.

That's the way we should go?
It'll stay vibrant-looking
year-round?

For the hedge,
I want something that will
eventually cover the wall

behind the new
outdoor kitchen.

You can see the height
of the back wall.

But it won't grow so fast
that it's gonna be a whole lot
of pruning for Linda.

it doesn't look like
the thickest guy right now,

but it definitely
will fill out.

-And low-maintenance.

And if you grab
one of the leaves over here.

Take a whiff of that.

With just a week and counting.

We're picking up
the pace inside,
completing the drywall

so we can get the interior
primed and painted on time.

Outside,
today is all about
the outdoor kitchen.

Some of Andy's favorite
memories with his
best friend Julio

were spent back here
in the garden
enjoying a great meal.

The welding brothers. Unite.

So, it's not surprising at all
that he's here,
welding the framework

that will support
the quartzite countertop
and backsplash in the kitchen.

that frame will support
all the stone.

some greenery behind it, yeah.

I actually already
went shopping
for the trees in behind here.

We're gonna do
some bay laurels

because they're gonna grow
nice and tall and slim.

It's not gonna get bushy
and overtake the kitchen.

And you can cook with them.

stuff anymore function
into this outdoor kitchen.

We've got the pull-out trash
and recycling.

before the big day,

we still have a long
punch list to get through.

The landscape crew
arrived early this morning

so we could get the bay laurel
and the trumpet vines

planted before the stone
for the outdoor kitchen
arrived.

We've thought through
every detail of this kitchen

from the low-maintenance
quartzite backsplash,

the under-mount lighting.

State-of-the-art pizza oven
that Andy knows Linda
has always wanted.

And on the inside,
We are almost ready
for the big day.

Is this going inside
like that?

Yeah. The plant
is gonna sit on the dish.

-[Andy] Yeah.
-[Drew] All right.

85 inches
of don't drop it.

-There we go.
-[Drew] All right, yeah.

The sound is going
to be incredible.

-Because I have the same bar.
-Right.

And we have a system
that's hardwired
to the outside?

Yep, so sound
in the back porch.

The inside here sound
is great, the brains of it,
all behind the TV.

And actually
the TV itself, too,
has the setup

where you can load photos,
videos, whatever you want
of your own stuff.

Right, it's like if it's
a computer in there, yeah.

Do you have a system
like this at home?

I have a tube television.

You don't actually
have tube TV, right?

Yeah, I actually do.

How do you watch football on,
like a little TV or whatever?

[Drew] Come to Julio's house,

this is sort of like a...

It's a flex space.

You can use it
for whatever you want.

[Drew] I like that you have
the extra stools
here, too, if you really want.

[Andy] And the sofa bed,
right?

[Drew] Exactly.

It's amazing they have a guest
come from Florida or whatever,

and some family,
they want to crash
for a couple of nights.

Even though obviously
it's a garage...

Yeah.

It does not feel
like a garage.

No, it doesn't.
But it's amazing.

It flows so beautifully
from walking in
from the beginning

from the craftsman hinge doors
that you can open up,

and just flow right through
to this barbecue area.

This patio is like
the perfect size.

A lot of people can
sit back here.

[Andy] That's amazing.

Well, I think the important
thing for the family
is her two sons

that are always with her
and the daughter Melinda,

who comes around
and they like to entertain.

too, where it's exciting,
because we're one step

closer to actually
cracking a beer
and using the outdoor space.

I mean,
there's no there's no limit.

I only do my gardening
with a beer in hand.

I feel amazing that
the place is so beautiful.

It's nice to have a space,

where you can
bring family together

and share stories.

I feel like
you're a storyteller.

Well, the thing is that,
you know,

this place will always have
special memories for everyone.

They'll always be like,
"If only Julio was here."
You know.

Julio's special not only
in my life,
but in my family's life.

He touched many, many people,
and he touched a lot of people

with his work as an actor.

People that I mentioned him
and they go "Julio,
know the name,

I say,"
"I'll show you a picture."

And they go.

"That guy is a great actor,
man."

And I go, "Yeah, I know."

They've been touched
by his presence.

And they remember him
through the work
that he's done over the years.

and just enjoy it.

Day-to-day you're not
going to need
to have any storage.

-But you have this handle
that comes down.

And then,
this is a whole ladder.

space up there.
-Yeah.

-And so then you have tons
and tons of storage.

That is amazing.

That is wonderful.

I do have, like decorations
for the holidays

and all that stuff,
which I love so much.

I think it's just so perfect.

clutter it
or anything like that.

Even the amount of light
that you get...

We wanted to string
the lights, but also,
Andy wanted to make sure

that you had the extra
lighting underneath here
