Of course I have only been a bush pilot for 25 years.

- Actually, I was a waitress back in Seattle,

and Roger was a police officer.

- Before that I was a park ranger.

I did a little stint in Glacier National Park

when I was younger.

- I don't know if wearing a uniform is going

to qualify you for the wilderness experience.

This country is brutal.

- Denise and I know what we will be facing.

Plus dreams don't come true without a little adversity.

- I had a dream once.

Carried a picture of it right in my wallet for 10 years.

- I bet it was a picture of a plane.

Surprise Bay is just over this ridge.

- This is great.

- Yeah, it's the one Bennet bought it for us.

It's the kind I used in the Park.

- This ain't no National Park.

- Stuff must be from the '30s.

It's hard to find these.

But, outside this door is wilderness.

- Our eyes are wide open. - Good.

A little logging camp near Portlock,

and that's 75 air miles from here, so,

watch out for yourselves.

[plane engine whirring]

- Hey, what is this thing?

- Rock crusher.

The miners put the rock in there

and wash them through something called the sluicer,

and the heavy sand and gold settles in the riffle.

Newman, amigo.

[dog barking]

[thunder rumbling]

- What do you think?

- Okay.

I have never been this happy in my entire life.

- Good.

Because I know you gave up a lot to come here with me.

- That's not how I see it.

I didn't give up anything.

I just traded my old life in,

for the life I always wanted,

with you.

- Maybe you shouldn't have traded in that old bed of yours,

because I think that one is too small.

- Roger, for two people who really love each other,

no bed is too small.

- [Roger] You're right.

- All right, then I'll just have to build us a bigger

- It's almost all gone.

There is some brown left.

But I thought I better cut down on the portions.

At least until the supplies get here.

It should be any day now.

[bear lightly growling] [tense music]

- Yeah, I can fix it, but that's not the point.

There's a Japanese fishing boat in the area.

This radio sucks.

So, the good news is that there's a boat out there.

Bennett said there would be some commercial traffic.

- Yeah, he also said the radio would reach Seward,

and that he'd send a plane to supply us.

- So it's a few days late.

- Roger, we're running out of food,

and it's almost Thanksgiving.

- We've still got some supplies left.

I've got my rifle.

- I'm not eating meat.

- So then we'll cook up the potatoes and use up the rest

of the brown rice.

Let's have a nice Thanksgiving.

- And then all we have left is the camping food and beans.

We can stretch the rice and potatoes up for a week.

- I think we should lighten up a little.

- If I moved awfully fast,

- Find anything else in that jacket?

Like a veggie burger and fries?

- I guess this place is really bigger

than a national park.

- We're running out of food.

And all the gold in the world can't buy us

a full meal out here.

- Now we have to go back

to that place Bill was talking about.

The logging camp at Portlock.

They're bound to have radios.

Get word to Seward, and tell him

about our supply situation.

Well, it's not like we're gonna be gone for good.

We're gonna be becoming back.

We just have to find out what happened to Stan's plane.

- I just hope I can handle the canoeing part.

I've only done it a few times and just in the bay.

- Yeah, I know, but I figured if we sat around

here till our food supply's run out,

we wouldn't have enough strength to paddle.

- We didn't go through all this

to leave the gold behind, did we?

- No way.

- I'll put it in a bag.

- So if we follow the coastline south to Gore Point,

we can go around there to Portlock.

It should take four or five days max.

- So we should be there by Christmas.

[light orchestral music]

- I wish we had done this weeks ago.

Take a look around you, Denise.

It's like all our hard work

is finally been rewarded by this beauty.

- [Denise] You know, it's weird,

considering our situation, that this

is exactly what I thought Alaska would be like.

So what's the plan for tomorrow?

- Well, we still have to get around Gore Point.

I checked the map and I think it's

gonna take us a few more days longer than we thought.

- I wouldn't be too disappointed

if we spent another day on this beach.

It's Heaven.

Look, there's Orion the Hunter.

And that's the Big Dipper.

- How would you like to spend

the next 24 hours making love to me on this beach?

- Hmm.

I think that's something

that I would have to seriously consider.

But if we want to get to Portlock by Christmas...

- No, I didn't know anybody was out there.

Had their heads filled with dreams by wily Bennet.

- Well, he's a hell of a salesman.

He talked me into flying for him once for free.

I still don't know how the hell he did it.

- Well, if he didn't supply them and I didn't supply them,

then 10 to one, nobody else did.

I'll give them a call.

- Last I heard he was out in the Auetians

ferrying some magazine team around.

Bud can be tough to reach.

[thunder crashing]

- Next time let's go someplace sunny and warm.

- Batsil filed a flight plan.

He's due back to Seward tomorrow.

I gotta see if he resupplied those kids.

a couple of times, right?

- No, I was hired to shuttle them, one way.

That's was my deal, to fly them in.

How long has it been since anyone was out there?

- I don't know.

They've got to be all right.

I mean, I'd given them a radio,

I told them anything they need, slightest problem,

just give me a call.

- You may not know this, but that radio is good

for 20 maybe 30 miles tops,

and that's if there's nothing in the way

like a mountain range.

- Well, I didn't know that.

He should have checked that out.

I'm a businessman, not an engineer.

- Those kids are in big trouble.

I hope they're still alive.

- I don't think we have any choice.

We have to cross it.

At least we'll have clean teeth.

[dramatic music]

If you fall asleep, your body temperature will slow down

and hypothermia will set in.

We won't make it through the night.

- We don't have enough matches.

I flew them up in October, but I had my suspicion

that they hadn't been getting their supplies.

So I ran up there and found this.

And their canoe's gone.

I figure they're heading

for the logging camp over in Portlock.

- It'll take us 15 minutes to get refueled,

then we'll move out.

- I appreciate it, Steve.

- Yeah, No problem.

- For what it's worth,

I figure you should start looking down near Gore Point.

- Okay.

- I've never been so sorry to be out of toothpaste.

- We've only gone six miles in eight days.

It's another 30 to Portlock.

We better get going.

- Look, I know that you don't want to talk

about the food situation,

or the fact that we might die, but Roger-

- Well, they definitely never made it to Portlock.

- Yeah, they radioed that they are just west of Gore Point.

and check the bays between there and Gore Point again.
