when you reach a certain age

that you can'’t do
anything anymore.

Age isn'’t going
to stop me

from doing anything
I want to do.

KIM: Welcome
to Nets Practice Facility.

My name'’s
Kimberly Garris.

I'’m our entertainment
manager.

So I oversee all of our
entertainment teams.

Our Nets'’ dancers,
some of which are here today,

to kind of put you
through the moves.

We also have our kids team
and our cheerleading squad.

We'’re just so excited
that you guys came out today

for our first senior
dance team.

As most of you know,
we'’re looking to hire

a group of about
10 to 12 seniors

who will perform at

at least 6 of our home games
beginning in January.

So we'’re gonna teach you
guys kind of a little hip-hop

combination today which I know
is new to a lot of you.

So how are we doing?

PARTICIPANT: Good.

You guys look great.

So how many of you have
never done hip-hop before?

It'’s not as scary
as you think.

I mean, come on, a bunchof old folks doing hip-hop?

to have a woman of my age.

I know are quite
different from hip-hop.

Then somebody
asked me,

"How would you feel dancing
in front of 20,000 fans?"

Well, I don'’t care.
I think--

That'’s why I was like,
she can do it.

I'’ll just keep on dancing.Yeah.

I think I need
more practice.

Uh-oh.
Watch out, ma'’am.

It might take me
a couple of times,

but I got the beat
and the rhythm.

I got it that far.

I'’m a '80s disco queen.

WOMAN: Do you have
any experience?

I spent the '’80s dancing
the night away.

I think my chances
are pretty good.

At least I hope they are.

PAT: They have judges,

they had people
from the Sopranos, Broadway.

And I thought,
"What am I doing here?"

KIM: So we'’re going to start

the audition as Betsy Walker.

And then I walked in
and found

the place was filled
with cameras,

wall to wall cameras
and I died

because
I'’m a total introvert.

I do not get
myself out there,

but then I realized
I had to give a name

so I gave the name Betty

'’cause that's what they
call me at my hip-hop class.

'’Cause I thought,
well, maybe Betty

could get out there
and be public.

And with my real audition,
I really let go, let loose.

I really kind of did
a pole dance, honestly.

BETSY: I heard the music and the music just spoke to me.

I mean, it was genuine,
but that was Betty

because Betty
was getting out there.

Betsy would never
let anybody know.

Betsy just keeps
things to herself.

BETSY: What I'’ve
learned with hip-hop

is that you can be
as big as you want to be.

Bigger the better,
because then you just--

of our generation.

We are the baby bloomers.

We'’ve grown up on doing
the twist and it'’s like,

AUDREY: I figured out everybody
just doing their own thing.

And I said,
this was meant for me.

to get on the team.

We are going sides.

I said I will
not dance a lot.

I didn'’t know it was
gonna be hip-hop.

I didn'’t know
what it was going to be,

but when they started
playing that music

and I was hopping,
hipping and whatever.

JOE B: Learning
hip-hop at 25

would have been a lot
easier than at 60.

I think when you'’re younger,

you probably can catch
on to different routines.

And I think when you get
older, you say to yourself,

"Oh, if I try a routine,

am I gonna break my neckor break an arm or break a leg?"

MARLA: I feel like we'’re making
this a lot harder than it is.

Would you walk down
the street like this?

No.

MARLA: No.
You would walk.

Walk, walk, walk.

JANICE: I'’m not fond of hip-hop,
I can tell you the truth.

I prefer the old music
and tap dancing kind of music.

That'’s--
That'’s my thing.

PAT: I'’ll always
love to dance.

You know,
we danced at school,

a little bit
of Irish dancing.

JANICE: One of my favorite
dances growing up

was the Jitterbug.

EDIE: If you wanted
to practice your dancing,

you went with your girlfriends
in somebody'’s basement.

Of course, we watched
Dick Clark every day.

That was, like, religious.

A one and a two
and a three and a four.

A one and a two and
a three and a four.

[ humming ]

The floor got to be slippery
and you go round.

That was the slide, baby.

CLAIRE: One of my favorite
dances is the mambo.

JOE B: The only way
that a chubby guy like me

would be able
to pick up girls,

not because of my looks,
because of my feet.

I said, "These are happy feet,
so they got to dance."

[ indistinct ]

One, two.

This cha-cha,
and then a mambo

would be-- I mean,
we'’re all very different.

We have housewives,
we have therapists,

paralegal, legal secretary.

I mean, how diverse.

Really.

But we'’re all like, you know,
young dancers out there,

you know,
just young hoofers.

DEANNA: I consider myself
a real Latin from Manhattan.

I'’m a legal secretary.

I'’ve been doing it
for many years.

When I left the audition
never even thought

that I would make the team.

And I had called in sick
because how can I tell

somebody that I'’m going
to audition for a dance team.

I get to work
the next day

and one of the
attorneys walked in,

pointed his finger
at me, he says,

"I saw you
on the news last night."

I thought I was going to die.

I did not realize
that the news media

was going to put
that stuff on the news.

I was busted.

Everybody knew where I was.

I wasn'’t home sick.

About a week later,
I got the call

telling me
I had made the team.

Ladies, come over
and let'’s chat real quick.

Ladies and gentlemen...

It'’s awesome.

Um, we'’re gonna learn,

it'’s a rain themes mix.

It'’s gonna be
"Singin'’ In The Rain,"

but we might not get
to that part today.

Like you'’ll start out with--

We'’re gonna start
with the hip-hop first,

and then we'’ll do

The first thing
is you'’re walking in,

you'’re making it rain
as you'’re doing it.

So do your arms up,

face, chest, down.

Grandma, turn
your palms to face you.

Yeah, good.

Yeah, they keep turning in.

I know.

Oh, your hands
are crooked.

It'’s not your fault.

I think the biggest perk
about having my grandmother

on the team is just getting
to spend time with her

and becoming closer to her.

You know,
she was close to me.

She was my grandmother,

but we didn'’t get
to talk or anything.

So now we--
you know, we--

We understand each other.

Yeah.

Now she knows
what I go through.

One and two and--

It'’s difficult to learn
what comes next

because we don'’t have that
much time to learn a routine.

Okay, so it'’s step,
step, step--

You know, it'’s taking us
longer to teach them

and it'’s not an age
thing really.

It'’s just a lack
of training thing.

You know, anybody that really
hasn'’t been trained in dance

their whole lives is gonna havea harder time picking it up.

Plus, most of them have
never heard of hip-hop,

let alone actually danced
hip-hop before.

Five, six, seven, eight.

Not bad for the first time.

Not too bad.

Okay, we'’re not going
to be screaming

going to our next tables.

You'’re not gonna run.

We'’re just gonna
walk quietly.

I care deeply about teaching.

These children, to me
this is my mission here.

The Nets is play.

This is mission,
you know,

this is what I'’m about,
these children.

What are we gonna
be looking for?

Betsy
is the kindergarten teacher.

Betsy is analytic.
Betsy is thoughtful.

Betty, though is, what I call
like a closet hip-hopper

where she doesn'’t really
let people know,

but she just loves
to let loose and dance

and enjoy her body
and enjoy moving

and is very intrigued
with the whole idea

of dancing in front
of 19,000 people.

MARLA: And then you
just get really loud.

Three, four, five.

JACQUI: I call her Captain Betty
because she just kind of

stepped out right
from the beginning.

She came out
and she was on it.

She knew what she was doing.

She picks up the choreography
right away.

You know, she wants
to be perfect

and she'’s always
striving to get

better and better
and better and better,

which I admire, considering
she is already

one of the best ones
on the team.

MARLA: One, two, three, four,
five, six, seven, open...

JACQUI: We put her up in the
front, we put her in the center

because it'’s nice to have
everybody else

be able to kind of
follow her lead.

She sets a great example.

EDIE: Two, three,
toe in the back.

One, two, three, down.

I'’ve been teaching dance
since I was about 16.

I thought my dancing
life was over.

So when this opportunity
came along, I thought, well,

let me go give it a shot.

And it is the greatest
feeling to be out there

as a performer again
rather than just a teacher.

MARLA: Two, three and four,
five, six, seven...

EDIE: It gets into your system
and you can'’t get enough of it.

MARLA: Four, five, six.
Okay, that was better.

Two and then it'’s--

No, your weight would
be in your left hip.

JACQUI: You know,
it'’s an interesting concept

that we have going here.

And I'’m young enough to be
some of their granddaughters,

you know, and I'’m telling
them what to do.

And in this arena,

there has to be a little
bit of a give and take.

They do have to be
able to listen to me.

It'’s been
a little frustrating

trying to get their
attention all the time,

trying to get them
to really focus.

They get a little chatty.

And I'’m happy that
they love each other,

but we only have 2 hours

and that'’s not nearly
enough time.

I love dancing
with our team members.

And because each
one of us tries to share

our experience
and sometimes frustration.

We compare notes.

"You'’re not the
only one, Fanny,"

so I get encouragement.

DEANNA: Well, the main thing
that we have in common actually

is that we'’re all old
and we'’ve all been around

for a long time.

Some of us are married,
some are divorced,

some are widowed.

All the life that we'’ve lived
kind of just pulls us together.

I have--

I have 6 children, and now
we have 14 grandchildren.

My kids are presently
29 and 34.

I have 3 boys.

This lovely gentleman
is my son Randy.

I have 6 children,
10 grandchildren.

And everybody
that goes with that.

I became a great-great
grandmother, April the 19th.

Jim and I have been
married for 38 years.

I'’ve been a widow
for 11 years.

My husband and I have been
together for 55 full years.

PEGGY: When I look back,
you know,

I didn'’t really have
any long range goals.

I wanted to be
a wife and a mother.

You know, you wanted to marry
the best-looking guy

who was a good kisser
and a good dancer,

And then have babies.

That'’s what you wanted.

Every day I walk
on a bus...

JOE: Miss Subways?

That was like
a really big thing.

[ cross talk ]

Everybody, remember
the beehive hair style?

That is so great.

You mean you have
curly hair?

It'’s wavy.

These are pictures
of my granddaughters.

This was before they'’re
going into the service.

This is Paige.

She'’s still at West Point.

Now this is Ashley.
She'’s in Afghanistan.

And this is her sister Kate.

And this is--last week
we went to see

the oldest daughter
graduate,

she is a medical doctor
today

and she'’s also captain
in the Army.

This is a picture
of the Happy Tappers.

I joined in 1999.

In order to be
in the Happy Tappers,

you had to be
a senior citizen.

We go to the nursing homes,
but we go to some of the places

so we have to really dance
because they might fall sleep.

We have to keep them awake.

JANICE: Back, say, I was
about 45 years old,

one of my friends said
they'’re going to be starting

an exercise class or maybe
a little soft shoe.

We danced different
places and she said,

"You have to come up
with a name."

So my daughter,
my oldest daughter

who reads a lot,
she goes,

"You know, there'’s
the Happy Hookers book."

She goes, "You could
just change it a little

to the Happy Hoofers.

I danced for the Hoofers
for a good 27 years

and then it got to the point

where nobody wanted to
dance anymore, but I did.

In the Philippines, I used
to be in the dance programs.

I have very vivid memories
of 1941 when war was declared.

We were in high school.
So we were excited.

We said, "Oh, vacation time."

We thought it was just--
It'’s vacation time because war.

So no, no school.

So that'’s what, we thought
we were happy.

We thought it would just last
for just a short while.

The Japanese
occupied the city,

so we had to go into hiding
in the mountains.

The thicker the jungle,
the better.

We lived in the jungle
for 3 1/2 years.

We were really all scared,
because the moment

we get caught it
would mean death.

[ humming ]

It was 1945.

We were liberated.

We were all so happy.

My schoolmates
and I would dance

and we call it
the Jitterbug.

These later years
that I learned the boogie,

boogie-woogie, it'’s just like
Jitterbug, I said to myself.

So it'’s easy to learn
because of the--

[ humming ]

My husband, he didn'’t go
for fancy dancing, not like me.

He'’s such a good husband.

Yeah, he lets me go.

Go, go, dance.

Right?

Right. Right.

No, he does not object.

He lets me dance.

MARLA: Let'’s walk the formation
just as a refresher.

JACQUI: You know, they'’re
coming together much better

than I expected,
considering they all came

from different
backgrounds

and a lot of them have
never danced before.

So I was a little nervous
as to what to expect.

Does everybody hear when he
says "let'’s go" in the music?

Du-du-du.

Du-du-du-du.

Let'’s go,
snap your fingers.

Everybody got the memo.

Pick that up and let'’s go.

Okay.

JACQUI: It'’s new to everyone,

and they each have
their own baggage,

in terms
of their experience.

Joe is a fine example of that

because I know that he'’s
a great swing dancer,

but hip-hop is a totally
different story.

Let'’s go.

[ song playing ]

JASQUI: I really try
not to get frustrated with him

because it is hard
to teach somebody

that doesn'’t have
rhythm, rhythm.

You can'’t really teach
that, you know.

I can teach steps,
but natural ability

is a different story.

So it'’s been a patience
lesson for me, so far,

and it'’s been, you know,

a great learning
experience for him.

You don'’t have to walk--

TRIXIA: It'’s a really
busy schedule

with the Nets and obviously,
it'’s like a full-time position.

But, oh, you know,
did you get a chance to talk

to grandmother a lot,
do you go home and help her?

I would like to, but that'’s
not necessarily always the case.

One night, it was, like,
my two younger sisters

and I were sitting
in the family room.

It was like
11 o'’clock at night.

First, you just
hear the counts,

five, six,seven, eight.

So for 20 minutes,
20-30 minutes

we just my grandmotherand then you just hear,

like, music over
and over again.

FANNY: If you could imagine,
in the middle of the match

[ indistinct ]

[ laughing ]

TRIXIA:
Yeah, she would be--

she goes
what happened to ears.

I ask her,
what goes through ears?

[ music playing ]

Good luck tomorrow.

It'’s the first game
tomorrow.

Everybody
is talking about it.

I think the tendency,
you guys are gonna be

a little nervous tomorrow

on court
because the sound system,

it'’s a huge space
and sometimes music sounds

a little slower
than it does here.

So you just want to think
you just don'’t want to rush.

They'’re gonna go out there
and they'’re gonna have

this crowd that'’s
screaming for them

and anything could happen.

They could get out there
and then what'’s gonna happen

possibly there'’s a snowball
effect where, you know,

if some of them start to forget what they'’re doing,

they'’re also busy
looking around.

All of a sudden
before, you know,

it'’s gonna be this huge mess

and no one'’s gonna knowwhat'’s going on.

I have nightmaresabout it at night

because that would just be
the biggest disaster ever.

But I have faith
that it won'’t happen.

You know, and we'’re
definitely working really hard

to make sure
that doesn'’t happen.

Okay, just take
a deep breath, exhale.

Don'’t anticipate.

Just count the music
and you'’ll be fine.

And I have my husband there
and my daughters there

the first day of the audition,

you were out there with?

Originally,
I have no idea.

You were with me, honey.

We auditioned
three at a time.

And when I saw you,
I was like what is this man--

How did you audition?

How did you
happen to go there?

Well--

I had been thinkingover the past couple of months,

you know, I'’ve turned
to 60.

You know,
I have been thinking about

I love to dance,
and no place

for us people to go

and certainly few years ago
I went to the Roxy.

Last time I went,
I got rejected.

They hurt my little feelings,
then you turn down the club.

And I used to have
a ball of a time

'’cause I loved to dance.

I used to go there and I
started feeling depressed,

couldn'’t do that anymore,

hadn'’t gone out
dancing in a while,

and I'’m reading that.

And then they say
they take senior citizens.

And it said,
even 60 year olds.

Right!

I just turned to 60.

All right.

are you talking about?"

I say, there'’s
50 to 100 women here

and there must be
the same amount of men,

there'’s 50 to 100 men.

I said they knew
more than I did.

He said, yeah,
but you'’re the only guy

that registered.

Then it dawned on me.
I said, "Oh, my God."

Wait a minute, why didn'’t
the other guys register?

Men were there,

but they were there
with their wives.

So my point is, I had no--

If they chose me because

I was the only male
or till this day

if I know how to dance
and I don'’t know.

Well, it worked
out for the best.

DEANNA: One of the things
that concerns me is

making it all the way.

We didn'’t realize how really
intense it was going to be.

I'’m using muscles
that I didn'’t know I had.

It'’s really, really rough.

And I worry about being
able to finish the season.

Whether we'’re
all gonna make it,

I don'’t know.

As soon as you guys are ready,
I'’m gonna do a quick warm-up.

Turn to your right.

We definitely have
some concerns,

you know, just because
it'’s an older group

as far as how hard
can we push them.

I think it'’s difficult
'’cause we do want to keep them

at the same standardsas our other team,

as you know
with the Net dancers.

They just go and go and go
and push as hard as we can,

but it'’s definitely a little
different with this team.

We want them to be able
to be physically fit enough

to perform
the choreography.

But we know we just
have to be more mindful

of their bodies and what
they'’re capable of doing.

I was 40
when I started exercising.

You know,
I remember overhearing

a woman at the gym
saying that she was like 70

and she knew she was
not gonna be able to walk

unless she really
did some exercise.

And I thought, oh, my God,
I better start now.

I think I was actually 50

before started
to see a change.

Yeah, probably.

And then as a female,

your whole body
starts to change and--

Yeah, that was tough.

You'’re alwaysthe skinny little thing

and all of a sudden you'’re
not so skinny anymore,

and that'’s when I became
more conscious

of doing a real
exercise program.

Staying in shape for me
is a lot of hard work.

[ music playing ]

When I was 45 years old,
I discovered ballroom dance.

It'’s something that I love
and it helps me to stay fit.

And I love to dance
with my teacher

who is 28 years old.

You know, even though
Claire'’s on a senior team,

she doesn'’t dance
like a senior.

I do have lots of clients
actually that I compete with,

lots of girls
in different levels

in different age groups.

I have chosen Claire

as my main partnership
in competition.

CLAIRE:
I don'’t feel any different

than I did
when I was in my 20s.

I don'’t have some
of the constraints

that come with being younger
and having to earn a living.

Been there done that,
and now I'’m free.

JANICE: I came to Kip Center
maybe about four years ago.

I think what they'’re doing

is a positive thing
for senior citizens.

It motivates them
and get out of their house

and not sit in the house.

And as they say,
we don'’t just play bingo here.

I look at other people
and I wonder

if I am 72,
are they a lot older?

And then I think,
will that be me

when I get to be that old

or will I try to look 55
like our aerobic teacher?

I wasn'’t interested--

I wasn'’t interested
in doing things

with any older people
because I'’m not old.

Osteoporosis has taken
effect, arthritis.

she is shorter than me.

She was always taller than me.

It'’s just an aging process
has taken hold on her.

I look at her though,

is that going to be me?

The dancers had such huge success

with their very first performance,

I mean, their TV appearances

and now we'’ve kind of
challenged them

to do something new.

a little stressed out.

a little stressed out.

You know, we have
that game looming.

We do want to keep them

at the same standards
as our other team.

So we'’ve really
put the pressure on

and we'’ll see what happens.

You know, the court
rehearsal'’s really the key.

If they can'’t do it
on the court,

we'’ll have to pull them from
the performance that night

which will be devastating.

BETTY: They want us to be professional dancers,

but we'’re not professional dancers.

I mean, we'’re senior citizens.

And I'’m working so hard to get those motions right.

How am I gonna do this

when I have to go
to school tomorrow

and teach and then still try
to get these--these moves.

And I'’m up in the front. I'’m the leader.

If I do it incorrectly,

the ones in the back might follow me.

The pressure is enormous.

It'’s just enormous.

seeing that
we'’re like in trouble.

Well, I think we'’re
better than we were.

As dancers, we are
so aware of our age

and at 25
we feel old already.

We are aware
of our bodies

and how things just start
to slow down as we get older

and maybe our leg
doesn'’t go quite as high

and can'’t wrap
it around my head anymore.

One, two, and...

I mean, there'’s
ballet companies

where if you are not a principal
by the time you are 18

you'’ve aged out.

And it just goes
the show that, you know,

life doesn'’t
end at 60 years old.

And for the seniors even,

some of them have wanted
to do this their whole life.

Now I know that,
you know,

when I get older
I have a place to go,

you know, and hopefully
they will take me

because I'’ll still want
to be dancing when I'’m 60.

MIKKI: That thing is great.

As my grandma would say,
if I can still cut a rock

I'’ll go out there and dance.

No problem.

If you ever watch the way
I play and what I do,

I don'’t think my body
would allow me

to do some of those moves
later on in life.

I'’ll probably be a couple
of knee replacements,

a couple of hip replacements
by the time I'’m 50 or so.

So I'’d just be there
watching them and cheering them.

I'’ll be too old
to be there for that.

I believe that
I am a role model.

that they want age 60

call them seniors

but the grey foxes

and vibrant, the vitality
and voracity

that they showed
is wonderful.

them when I grow up.

I'’ve had in a very,
very long time.

I think as you get
older a lot of times

your mind tells you,
you can do something

and your body rebels,
especially

when you start
going into your 60s.

But I have to say
when I'’m out there dancing,

I forget how old I am.

I'’m not thinking
that I'’m old

and I'’m, you know,
a grandma

and that maybe I shouldn'’t
be doing this.

I'’m just having
so much fun

that it'’s something
that I feel

that I should
be doing.

BETTY: As I look to this
last game I can'’t believe

this season is almost over.

I was missing

different personality

than she was at the beginning

was she realized

that from dancing she was
starting to lose weight

and she got
so fired up about it

and she was loving
the results of it,

push even harder.

And she improved so much
as like her life turned on

and the true performer
in her came out.

And I guess it
was there all along

but nobody ever
got to see it.

I think
she is a great example

of what we can hope
would happen.

But at 65 it doesn'’t work
that way anymore.
