[Episode 3] [Take the Risk]

Mr. Yuan.

You must be wondering

why I'm here as well.

Her Majesty values your capability a lot lately,

and sees the military fund as a priority.

It is not a surprise that you are here

to assist with the case.

Who is so daring

to lay a hand on the military fund?

I'm guessing

that it's an inside job.

We should first torture

those who escorted the military fund.

I...

Mr. Li, you've always been a master

at turning against your own people.

There's something else I'm good at.

I have a good sense of smell.

I can smell it

if the person is up to something.

Try me then.

I smell

liquor,

incense,

and mint,

but no women.

You are the chief of the escort?

Yes.

Anything suspicious

before the fund

went missing?

Nothing suspicious

along the way,

except that when we passed Tongquan,

the kids there were all singing

the same rhyme.

What kind of rhyme?

♪Walking in the dark♪

♪With the wronged souls♪

♪The censor is the one in charge♪

♪The mist will take all the lives♪

♪Each and every one is asked♪

♪Nobody is willing to light the dark♪

Tongquan?

It sounds

quite familiar.

Tongquan

is not far away from the capital.

Over a decade ago,

it was where

the horrifying case

happened,

and the key criminal

was the monitor censor at the time,

Yu Qian.

[Second Year of Zhaofeng] Kill him!

- Kill him! - Kill him!

It's proved

that Yu Qian, the former monitor censor,

was convicted of corruption,

arson, and murder.

There are witnesses and evidence.

It is heinous.

Yu Qian and his family, 37 in total,

are sentenced to beheading.

Execute.

Yu Qian

was notorious.

In order to erase

the evidence of assault and rape,

he killed a lot of people.

The rhyme also reminded us

of that case,

so we asked the locals about it.

They said

that after Yu Qian was beheaded,

he turned into a devil,

compeling the souls of the women he burned to death

to wander in the woods and harm the passers-by.

What a coincidence.

When the military fund were passing,

this place became haunted.

I think

someone is making use of the case

and misleading us.

But what's the relation between the missing military fund

and the story of the ghosts?

We arrived here at the hours of Hai.

Suddenly,

there was fog.

Move faster.

The fog

is getting bad.

Is it going to be the same

as what the rhyme said?

That is nonsense.

Cheer up!

Keep going!

Ghost!

There's a ghost!

Raise your torch.

Kill it!

- Kill it! - Kill it!

Then for some reason,

we all passed out.

When we woke up,

both the military fund and the carriages

were gone.

Did the ghosts do it?

If you mention ghosts again,

I will cut your tongue off.

The escort passed out at the hours of Hai,

and woke up around the hours of Yin.

There weren't a lot of hours in between.

The thieves wouldn't have enough time

to erase the trace.

Follow the track and keep searching!

[Lu Danxin's Residence]

Ping'an.

Ping'an,

who is she?

An old friend,

like us.

Relax.

You will know me well soon.

I never thought

that after all these years,

we could still meet someone

who also suffered from the case of the censor.

From now on, Nichang

is one of us.

She will join our operation.

Tell me.

How did you meet each other?

[Four years ago]

All he said was that he saw

the butterfly pendant in Wuxiang,

and then we are here.

What if he made it up?

We can't give up on any hope.

If she is still alive,

we might get some evidence

from her.

[Liaorong House] Taibai brings female prosperity.

Everyone is talking about it now.

A lot of people say

that the Taibai Star

has something to do with the Empress Dowager.

The Empress Dowager?

Cailian!

That way.

Hurry up.

That's the butterfly pendant.

Do you

recognize this pendant?

We should be

old friends,

from the case of the censor.

After we met,

we decided to wait for an opportunity

in the capital.

When the Empress came to the throne

and decided to put an end to corruption and misconduct,

we thought the chance finally came.

Only with a stronger power

can we make villains like Du Liang and Zheng Yuan

pay for what they did.

As for what happened afterward,

you basically guessed it right.

The missing of the military fund

is also part of the plan.

Du Liang took part of the military fund,

so we are going to stir things up

and make it tough for him.

Then

how did you get the fund

from the escort?

The official road

is far away from the last post station.

If they wanted to get the fund

to the capital today,

they needed to set off

last night.

There will be heavy fog these days,

make use of it.

Cailian knows the wind well in the woods.

She added the anesthetic smoke into the fog,

and the escort

passed out quickly.

Our people were hiding in the woods.

Nobody could notice them.

Is this the ghost?

Such a dirty trick.

The anesthetic smoke was added into the fog,

and these morons were yelling.

The more agitated they were,

the more smoke they inhaled.

Without the rhythm

that messed with their mind,

they wouldn't have been so vulnerable to losing control.

I think

it was a nice move.

What are you waiting for?

Search the woods!

Do not miss

any suspicious spots.

Yes, sir.

Wait.

There is something wrong with the track.

The carriages were full of silver.

Why is there

such a shallow track?

Perhaps they transferred it separately.

I just don't want you

to end up in vain.

If it is not in the woods,

where else can it be?

In such a short time,

if I were them,

I would take an easier way

without transferring it

out of the woods.

Sir,

shall we search the woods?

He got a point.

If he is right,

he can't be the one taking all the credit.

Follow him

and see what he is up to.

Yes, sir.

You didn't hide the fund in the woods?

It is difficult to hide the track

and we can't go far away

with such a heavy cargo.

Moreover,

one of the officials in the investigation team

can be a tricky problem.

Who?

Yuan Shaocheng.

The Court of Judicial Review

would definitely get involved if the fund was missing.

Mang Gutter

is the poorest area in the capital.

People of low status,

abandoned by their families

and scorned by society,

gather here.

Their descendants are all considered lowlifes.

Yuan Shaocheng

is the only one among them

who got rid of the low status

and became an official.

He got something then.

By the way,

I overheard from a man of Qi Junshan

that Qi Junshan gave Yitai Gambling House

to Yuan Shaocheng.

It seems like Yuan Shaocheng

has gained a lot after ganging up

with Du Liang.

Qi Junshan lost his profit

to Yuan Shaocheng.

I don't think he will just let it pass.

You worked with Yuan Shaocheng before.

What kind of man

is he?

He is cruel

and good at scheming,

often with

his own means.

He

is the biggest enemy

in our plan for the military fund.

That was why we listened to Ping'an

and hid the money

in the river.

Is he

going to see through it?

Keep the money in the river.

Really?

Hiding it in the river

is the safest,

most unexpected move.

Wenyu,

call the boatmen

and search along the river carefully.

Yes, sir.

Search in detail!

Here

and there.

Everyone says

that you are not with the Li family

or the Wu family.

But people are like water,

ever-flowing, ever-changing.

I'm curious

whether you are with the Li

or with the Wu now.

Have you changed, Mr. Li?

I'm in this position

thanks to the trust of Her Majesty.

I'll do anything to protect the Empress.

My loyalty is unwavering.

Chancellor Fu

died in prison because of you.

You are

a terrifying wolf

in the eyes of the eminent families.

You are smart, Mr. Yuan,

so what do you think

Her Majesty

values most?

Sir,

there seems to be something in the river.

Go.

Mr. Li,

over there.

Get into the river

and help the people

of Yuan Shaocheng.

The one who finds it will be rewarded greatly.

Yes, sir.

Follow me.

Mr. Li,

we found nothing.

The reflective thing

is the mud at the bottom of the river.

Hey,

why is the mud in the bottom

reflective?

Sir,

we travel along this river a lot.

There is a mine in the upper stream,

so there is nothing strange

that it is reflective.

Why would I believe your words

and waste all my time here?

They are long gone now!

Yuan Shaocheng,

I doubt

that you are together with them!

Mr. Li,

please watch your mouth.

This is useless.

You'd better

keep a distance from this case.

Otherwise, you might get into trouble.

Everyone, follow me to the woods.

Don't waste any time here.

- Yes, sir. - Yes, sir.

I just checked.

Besides Yuan Shaocheng,

the cruel official Li Jun

is also working on the case of the fund.

Li Jun is willing to betray anyone

in order to get to a higher position.

He is wild and impulsive.

When you asked us to sprinkle the minerals

on the mud,

I was thinking

what the point was.

Now I know that you were

setting a trap for Yuan Shaocheng,

so that

he wouldn't

keep an eye on the river all the time.

Also,

the war is on pause now,

but we need to hurry up

and complete our plan as soon as possible,

so that the imperial court can get the fund in time.

If we hide it in the woods,

it will be more tricky.

That's why we need another way.

Danxin,

do you think

it is risky

to let Nichang, who we don't know very well,

be

part of the plan?

It did occur to me at the beginning,

but

you and I

also became families from two persons

who didn't know each other well.

Over these years,

the three of us went through a lot,

but none of us ever thought about giving up.

Don't worry, Ping'an.

An overcautious

or hesitant person

will not succeed.

You risked your life

and put yourself in it,

and I am willing to be

the best sidekick

of yours.

This is too big.

I can't take the whole thing.

Make it half.

Alright.

You should have made a bigger one

and a smaller one,

and I will take the smaller one.

No problem.

This is small enough,

but that one looks better.

Over here.

This is good.

I will take this one.

What are you doing?

Are you doing business or not?

Madame,

I will take the whole thing.

She is taking it.

Wrap it and send it over.

Sure!

Blackie, keep an eye out!

So impressive.

You scare away

all the annoying people.

How's everything in the east outskirts?

There will be big fog tonight.

It is the best time

to transfer the money.

Yet, there are people

guarding the river.

From whom?

Yuan Shaocheng.

Li Jun is searching in the woods,

but for some reason,

Yuan Shaocheng didn't go.

Alright.

I will think of something.

Here you go. See you around.

What are you doing?

Don't touch Blackie.

Miss Cailian,

I will have one Jin of pork.

Sure.

Seventy Wen in total.

The price is higher than before.

The price of salt is much higher.

Of course, it is the same for pork.

Are you taking it or not?

Do not get in my business.

I will take it.

Is this enough for you?

Yes.

Did someone cross you today?

Why are you angry?

It's none of your business.

Thanks,

Miss Caizhu. [*Zhu means pork]

What...

What are you saying?

I'm going to poison you and Yuan Shaocheng one day.

Aunt?

You are...

I never thought

that the furnishing of the house

could be so elegant.

It is a bit different

from the shops in the surroundings.

I heard that you were an excellent psychiatrist.

I would like you

to have a look

for me.

This way, please.

Do you have any symptoms?

No symptoms.

No symptoms?

Then why are you here?

Your name

is well known

in the capital now.

I'm just curious.

What's so special

about you?

I see.

I will get you some medicine.

What's this?

Try it, and you will know.

This liquor

is strong,

but nothing special.

This is what you need.

What can unravel these woes of mine?

I know but one drink, Du Kang Wine.

Excellent.

It's a good cure.

I like it.

You do

live up to your reputation.

A verbal decree from Her Majesty.

[Psychiatric Commissioner] There's no progress in finding the fund,

and it is upsetting.

Ye Ping'an is now officially appointed

as the Psychiatric Commissioner

with the right to assist in the case

and use it as a pass.

Make use of your ability

of reading people's minds.

I...

It is

my honor.

You can get up.

So you are Miss Wu,

Editorial Director of the Palace Secretariat.

I apologize

for being rude earlier.

How do you know my identity?

There is only one woman in the capital

who is as noble as you

and can deliver messages

for the Empress.

I just didn't expect

you to drink

my cheap stuff

without a second thought.

I don't have a preference for liquor.

A cheap one

and a fine one will do the same.

What matters

is the person

who hands me the cup.

[Psychiatric Commissioner]

[Imperial] Alright.

I'm getting

more interested in you now.

Maybe your priority should be the case,

Mr. Yuan.

Mr. Li is searching the woods now,

while you are just doing nothing

by the river.

Don't you worry

that someone else will take the credit?

I'm interested in listening

to the opinion

of our new official,

the Psychiatric Commissioner.

Since they are hiding the money

in the woods...

If.

Fine.

If.

If they are hiding

the money in the woods,

it can be found

by the people who live around.

It is 80,000 Liang.

It can't be hidden

under the leaves.

If they were doing it properly,

they needed to dig beforehand.

It wouldn't be easy,

and they would need hands.

I won't be here

without a lead, Mr. Yuan.

I went to the black market

and learned

that a few days earlier,

someone hired some stonemasons

to go to the mountain ahead of you.

They are not out yet.

Who hired them?

The rule of the black market

is taking the money

without asking any questions.

However,

I gave some money to the middleman of the black market

and asked him to mark

the possible spots they were hiding.

They've been in there for a while.

There must be some trace.

All we need is to follow it.

You are a nice person,

handing over

this important lead.

I just got appointed,

so I cannot fail the trust of the Empress.

However, I don't have any actual power.

I will need your assistance

to close the case.

When it's time for credit and rewards,

please don't forget

to include me

as someone who helped, Mr. Yuan.

You won't do it in vain.

Thank you.

You are welcome.

Let's go.

Wenyu,

hand this to Li Jun.

Yes.

Let's go.

What?

You are not going with them?

Searching in the woods is exhausting.

I should stay

and take a rest here.

Maybe later

they will think it through

and bring the money back.

Sure.

I won't bother you anymore.

Good luck.

Mr. Du,

the Psychiatric Commissioner is Ye Ping'an.

So Ye Ping'an gets involved

in the military fund now.

I have no idea what the Empress is thinking.

Why would she appoint

a despicable commoner like her?

Things are not going well for me lately,

and they all seem to do with Ye Ping'an.

I may have underestimated her.

Mr. Du,

let's just do it in the simplest way.

I will send some people

to eliminate her.

Zheng Yuan is dead,

and now the military fund is missing.

All the cruel officials are looking.

Killing someone at this moment

is too risky.

Keep an eye on her.

Find out what she is doing

other than the investigation.

She might

have the Mei alliance behind her.

[Mei Mansion]

Please.

Please.

Have mercy on me,

a poor, blind old man.

Sir.

Sir.

Please show me some kindness.

Earth?

That's a good one.

Crops grow on the earth.

If there are crops, people will not starve to death.

They can work as long as they are alive.

I like this.

I see. This is your reward.

Here you go.

He's got the wrong answer.

What should we do with him?

He should carry the water barrels

for at least four hours!

That's right.

Why are you standing here? Go.

[Mei Bowen, Left Chancellor] He is the elder son of the Feng family.

Find him something

that is easy and can make money.

This is yours.

Thank you, Master.

Hurry up.

As for the other one,

send him

to work for Xian Guangping.

He will go through hardships

with General Xian

in the Yulin Royal Guard.

He is a young man.

Hardship will be good for him.

Too much wit leads to downfall.

Yes, sir.

I heard

that a lot is going on in the capital.

Rumor has it

that a woman can see people's dreams.

That's right.

She got involved,

but she gained the Empress's trust

with her ability to glimpse dreams

and got away from the trouble.

Both were about dreams.

While Fu Shengjun fell,

she

rose.

Do you truly believe

that the dream

led them to different paths?

Master.

What brings you here?

Master,

what do you think

about the military fund?

Everyone is looking

at the military fund now.

Yes, sir.

About this,

leading the charge are the merciless officials

and the Court of Juridical Review.

Wait for it.

After that,

some will get promoted,

and others will suffer.

The military fund

supports people's livelihood and border defense.

I'm afraid

that someone will act recklessly

to get the credit.

Don't worry.

The war is temporarily suspended.

The military fund might be

in better use

if it is missing for a few days.

Whether it is the Wu or the Li,

they are both eminent families.

Sometimes,

taking a break is not a bad thing.

So we should do nothing?

Please enlighten me, Master.

Keep this in mind.

Sometimes,

doing nothing can bring progress.

Impatience

leads to mistakes.

You will see.

Any updates

on the military fund?

Not yet.

Mr. Du,

is Yuan Shaocheng reliable?

He handed me the letter,

which means all he wants is power.

As long as he wants something, he won't be a problem.

One can't fight against stronger forces.

At least

he knows that.

That's for sure.

The priority now

is to keep a close eye on Yuan Shaocheng.

Once he finds the military fund,

I will report it and get the credit.

Watch out for traps.

The more traps we encounter,

the more it proves we're on the right path.

Keep searching.

- Yes, sir. - Yes, sir.

Sir,

the track of the carriages

is divided into three again.

Which one should we follow?

Sir,

Mr. Yuan sent this map.

Stop following the track.

Search these places in the woods

one by one.

Yes, sir.

We won't have enough time

if Yuan Shaocheng keeps staying by the river.

I will get some people over there

and distract him.

Don't be reckless.

Ping'an,

what's the plan?

He's aligned with Du Liang, right?

Then let's take him

down.

[Du Liang] Du Liang is greedy.

[Greedy] He wants both the credit and fortune.

[Qi Junshan. Easily irritated] Qi Junshan is impatient

[Yuan Shaocheng] and competitive.

He and Yuan Shaocheng don't see eye to eye.

[Gambling House] We can start from Qi Junshan.

If he finds out that Yuan Shaocheng

is suspicious of taking the fund,

they will go against each other.

Go away.

Hurry up.

Sir,

look at this.

You've been drinking quite a lot, huh?

The missing military fund

is with Yuan.

He's hidden it in Yitai Gambling House.

You will find a trace.

Who gave you this?

I...

I have no idea.

If you mess things up because of getting drunk again,

I will seal your mouth.

Yes, sir.

Sir,

Yuan Shaocheng

has been favored by Mr. Du.

For anyone who takes

things of mine,

I will take his life in return.

I always keep my word.

Integrity is the most important thing,

right?

That's right.

Bring some people.

We are catching the rat.

Sir,

this is the military fund.

Sir,

I've got you some food.

Here you go.

What makes you so happy?

Nothing.

You've been smiling a lot for no reason

since you were back from hunting last time.

Are you interested in someone?

When I was hunting last time,

I saw a lady

training an eagle

in the woods.

When I was back in town,

I met her again at the port stall.

I've been buying pork from her a lot since then.

What?

You want to be the pork

and let her chop you up?

Sir,

you are making jokes now.

I've been wanting to tell you,

but I'm afraid...

Do you think I will stop you?

You saved my life.

You said I was one of the Yuan family as well.

We can't be bullied.

We're not cowards.

And we work together.

You let me work in the Court,

and you gave me dignity.

If you disagree,

I won't...

I didn't give you dignity.

You earned it yourself.

You said it yourself.

We are not cowards.

Since then,

you can tell the lady

about your feelings.

If she says yes,

I will take charge

of the wedding.

Sir.

Thank you, sir.

Alright.

Did Li Jun make any progress?

Sir!

Sir!

Sir!

Qi Junshan

is smashing the gambling house!

What?

Call everyone

and head back now.

Notice Mr. Gu

to watch out for Mang Gutter.

Yes, sir.

Mr. Du wants to meet you.

It must be the first time

that you experience this.

If you don't want to suffer,

tell me

where the military fund is.

Military fund?

Why are you asking me about that?

I will only say it one more time.

Where is

the military fund?

I have no idea.

I don't know what you are talking about.

Without treatment,

you will bleed to death

in less than two hours.

I know people like you very well.

You grew up drinking the water from the Mang Gutter

and eating the leftovers of others.

Nonetheless,

you managed to survive

like a rat.

But I'm born a tiger.

How can a rat

fight against a tiger?

It takes only one step

for me to smash you.

Do you understand

who you are messing with?

You will be begging for death.
