All right, what I'd like you to think about is how

you can apply this to school.

Because you are the voice.

If you don't use your voice or sign or communicate,

how do we know what we need to do?

Or how do we know what to feel and work together as a…?

It's a production about these three

time-travelling students

and they do a project on John Farnham.

John has just done a gruelling five weeks

overseas in, uh, Europe.

He went to number one in West Germany this week,

number one in Sweden, roaring up the French

and Italian charts,

and they're really keen

for him in America.

So, congratulations, John.

All I am is… Basically, all I am is a singer.

And I love to do that.

Get up and make your way to the stage.

It's like a dream.

[pensive music playing]

[female teacher] All right. So, at the moment,

we've got some auditions for three main parts.

We've got Darcy.

We've got the three students: one, two, and three,

which I can make four if I have some awesome people.

And we've got some John Farnhams.

So, we've got four John Farnhams,

one from the '60s,

one from the '70s,

one from the '80s,

and one from the '90s.

So you might choose to audition for any of these.

Oh no.

I don't know how I'm gonna do.

[quirky music playing]

[teacher] What about you, mister?

Do you think that you'd like to be in a production?

-[male student] No. -Sir?

Would you like to help out backstage, Byron?

and be in the production.

[teacher] I have here today some scripts.

We're gonna practise them

so that when it's time to audition,

you can choose which role you want

and you'll be ready to audition.

The TV interviewer begins

to introduce John Farnham to the crowd.

[in deep voice] "Welcome to John Farnham."

-[normal voice] But you say…? -"It's John Phantom."

I know, he wants us to

make a presentation about John… Farmhouse?

Do you know any of his songs?

Oh, hey.

I just loo… looked up music from the 1960s, and it's…

on this website, it said that

they had beetles that could sing.

That can't be right, can it?

Cool. Good.

See how much better you do when you've got a prop

and you've got your space and everything?

But the main thing to focus on

when you're, like, doing the acting,

and you gotta do the expression

and the body language.

That's right, the body. You can't just stand there.

You gotta…

You can't just stand still like a hunched statue.

No, absolutely not. It doesn't work that way.

So, you've gotta move your body.

It's about everything that makes…

It's like being in a… It's like making a cartoon.

You gotta make a lot of, like, body language expressions

and, like, if the character doesn't have a mouth,

you have to do the eyes more.

-Mostly. -That's right.

Like, you know Gromit

But you can understand what he's feeling

by his body language and his eyebrows.

Today's the day we're gonna be doing auditions

for the school production.

So, we're gonna get you to read the lines.

Darcy's gonna be Student 1, I'm gonna be Student 2,

and Tony's gonna be Student 3.

And we will get you to choose, and I'm pretty sure,

'cause you, I know you want the '80s,

so you've gotta choose "You're The Voice,"

to pretend to sing along with… for us.

So, we'll do the lines first. Then we'll do the singing bit.

We are staring at you. We have no idea what's going on.

she can be one of them.

Well, the thing is, I wanna play a main role

so I can, like, be a big actress…

And I wanna sing that to honour my aunt.

My name is Halle, um,

and I have a big interest in movie making.

The thing is, they can tell us stories about ourselves

and what we can actually do for our futures.

But my main interest is, um, dragons.

Dragons are awesome, don't get me wrong,

but a lot of people shamed me

because of my liking for dragons.

Um, I had a couple of people that kept bullying me

and they would usually pick on me

because of my liking for dragons and drawing.

They would tell me, "Oh, all you draw is dragons.

You're pathetic."

And they always made fun of me because I'm…

I have an autism spectrum disorder,

and I was having difficulty understanding things

and not doing things right,

and they would call me pathetic and stupid,

and it just hurt me really bad

because it made me feel like I can't do anything right,

and it just made me feel that I wasn't smart enough

or good enough to do anything.

So, tell me how you're feeling about the school production.

I really want to know.

Well, I'm feeling very nervous about it,

'cause, I don't know,

I always had a fear that I'm gonna mess it up somehow.

[Halle's mum] Yeah, but that's, that's normal

and it's exactly what happens to everybody.

and passed away quite suddenly,

and I think Halle harbours

a lot of guilt

that she didn't get to say goodbye,

because Halle's core being

is family and, and trust.

Um, as a mum,

all I want for her is to be happy

and part of something

where she feels like she belongs,

because so often in life,

she feels that she's never belonged.

And watching her up there doing her thing

and wanting to make someone proud,

I think I'll be hoping for her that she fulfils that.

[Lori] But Sadie is actually a really important

-part of the show. -Yeah.

And we thought that you would actually be

[Lori] Now, what we'd like you to do, though,

is be the understudy for the '80s one.

if the person who's playing the '80s John Farnham is sick…

…you'll be doing that one as well.

I'll be the replacement? All right, brilliant.

but not everything works out.

My grandpa actually put this perfectly to my mum once.

You know, you have to roll with the punches

sometimes, you know?

I still at least got the backup role

with the '80s John Farnham,

so I'm still happy about that.

I think if you're gonna portray someone

like John Farnham, you…

I look at it that you wanna dot all your t's…

Ah, cross the t's, dot… dot the i's.

Because he just became one of Australia's brilliant legends,

so I was…

I was pretty much humbled by the fact that

I manged to even get a role.

[school bell rings]

the number one important thing, um, for me,

um, Mum and Grandma especially.

So, they've both helped me to get to who I am

and where I am today.

And the other thing that I really love and enjoy

is aviation.

And I hope to get a job as a fast jet pilot.

I don't think there's anything quite like it.

[Josh] Here in Victoria,

we do our pilot's training down at RAAF base, Point Cook.

And that occurs during the school holidays for two weeks.

I was hoping to do that

but 'cause I'm still in the process

of getting my medical certificate,

they need to get more background details

on my disabilities

and how that affects my ability

to pilot an aircraft.

Probably an A320. Probably.

Just a different tone of the engine.

But, yet again,

that could be due to the different distance.

So, there is a lengthy process to it with my case.

But they've not said no. And I…

The key to getting to your goals

is through determination.

I mean, at the end of the day,

you never know what's gonna happen.

been a blessing.

At my other school I used to get sent home

because of my seizures

multiple times a day.

Used to have eight to ten a day.

Now I'm having none or one a day.

And I…

I haven't really been bullied here.

So, at my other school, I used to get bullied

every day, pretty much.

And that's made going to school a nightmare.

And then caused me to do self-harm

and all that sort of stuff.

So I've, trust me,

I've improved so much from then.

I'm going to school five days a week now.

I used to go three days a week to school,

or hardly at all because of it.

[school bell rings]

[piano notes playing under gentle music]

I got diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder.

So, it started off with ticks, and then little jolts,

and they said, "You need to go home.

They look like mini seizures."

And I went home bawling my eyes out.

You're always looking for the dangers with anxiety.

You're not looking…

You're not looking for the positive,

you're looking for the dangers.

And that's what kept pushing me

back and back and back.

And that's what made me worse,

is because I didn't know

how to use positive self-talk

or how to…

Can I help myself get out of this situation?

[pensive music playing]

[Lori] We're going to start looking at the script.

Now, Student 2 is not going to be called Student 2.

Growing up, my dreams were always like,

be a princess and live in a magic castle.

But my mum has always told me that, like,

spiritually, maybe I could be, like, you know, a princess

or something.

But now my dreams are more like

being a motivational speaker

and a businesswoman one day.

It also means I'm going to have to do

a lot of work and stuff,

like, actually get off my butt.

To be honest, when I was a little girl

I definitely imagined myself being in a wheelchair forever.

You know, it's actually my, um…

my eleven-year anniversary in a few weeks

from when I got hit by the car.

I developed quite a few problems,

like, I get tired so easily,

and sometimes when I'm really, really stressed

or I kind of over-exert,

then I end up fainting.

To be honest, I like to scream into my pillow

and just scream all the bad out.

Oh, hi, Wendy.

Sorry, my cat's right ne… behind you.

Yeah. Wendy! Wendy! Come to Mama.

[Chelsea's mum] Chelsea's my youngest child. She's 16.

And, when she was five, she got an acquired brain injury.

So she was hit by a car.

Very close to dying.

At the time when… when it happened,

we spent about six months at the Children's recovering.

And so she had to do, you know,

everything again, walking, talking.

Um, but she's really strong in herself,

and I think that's really helped her

because she's like a fighter.

Yeah.

Um, she's super funny.

You know, everyone says she should be a comedian.

[laughs] Yeah.

Has she cried yet?

See, that, she just… [laughs]

She wants me to cry but I'm not gonna.

[laughs]

Which is understandable, 'cause I helped.

that I need to climb to, you know, get over it.

But it's been a lot of tears, a lot of anxiety.

But I'm really excited about it.

And he come to us and said when he turns 18,

he wants to join the Air Force.

And basically, he just lives and breathes

for Air Force Cadets. Loves it.

He used to have meltdowns with his emotional autism.

If he's had a bad day,

I take him to get his mind off it,

and we go and watch the planes,

and they come right over the top of our car.

And he'll say, "Mum, that's a A380,"

and I'll say, "Okay, I just know it's got wings."

[Josh's mum] Yeah. Yeah, lovely.

[Josh] Excuse me. Banner coming through.

[Josh] Really, I… I love aviation,

and… and that's why I've signed up

to the Australian Air Force Cadets.

We actually came second this year, ah,

runners up in drill comp and annual parade.

[Josh's mum] He makes me so proud

because I know I've raised him the right way.

It's been pretty tough.

I've also got an intellectual disability, like Josh.

I didn't grow up, ah, having a lot of friends.

I said to my mum,

[emotionally] "Why aren't I like everybody else?"

And then Josh would get emotional,

and he would say, "Why can't I be just like someone else?"

And I said, "Because you're unique."

And I said, "You're like your mum.

And, unfortunately, I made a mini-me."

And that's when he said, "I love you so much, Mum."

He said, "For the way you sit and explain things to me."

I would just say to him, "It is hard.

And life isn't gonna always be kind.

And you've just gotta find another way

to get around those… those things."

For the first time in her life,

she's actually made friends.

that's all you want for your children.

and said that she wanted to be involved in a musical,

we were absolutely shocked.

We never thought that she would

push outside her comfort zone

yeah, I've always struggled to get on stage and that.

And I just felt like…

I'm doing better now.

I should do something fun

and try and do something new.

I'm really proud of myself,

and saying hurtful words and that.

But there's been some really big changes

that have helped me from the production.

[Elyse] I definitely feel like

I'm doing a really good job now.

Um, my confidence is boosted and everything.

So, yeah.

that were happening in her world,

to now this young lady

who's ready to embark on this journey of adulthood.

I feel relieved after all of that.

I felt so much anxiety just pushing through it.

But I pushed through it as best I could,

through my anxiety that I was having.

But, thankfully, I got through it and I did it.

And I saw my family in there.

They were so kind and loving to come see me.

And I'm so happy of how this turned out.

And I know that my friends and family

will be proud of me.

But more importantly, I need to be proud of myself

and love myself for who I am

because I know that I can do it.

[Andre] Halle, do you have any, um, final thoughts?

Well, I feel like I've done what I needed to do

and I finally did the goal that I needed to do

for Auntie Irene.

I've finally done it, and you know what?

I think the show's really helped me move on from her.

Like, every time I hear "You're The Voice" I cry,

but now, I don't so much anymore.

I don't cry as much as I used to

and I think it's helped me move on pretty well. Hi.

Um, I… I just gotta say,

it has made me feel more confident

about myself and, um,

talking, talking in a big crowd now,

I'm more confident about it.

It kind of helped me, like, realise more about my career

that I wanna do after high school.

[Adelaide] My favourite thing from the production

was you being so funny without the script.
