Things are still looking bad

in mountain country,

especially on 1-70
through Vail Pass.

The plows are working
to keep up with the storm,

but if you don't need to travel,
best to stay off the roads.

In Colorado,

eight inches of overnight snow

is taking a toll on I-70,

and on
the Mountain Recovery crew.

13-01,

we're double stacked
at the 180.

Come back quick.

The steep grade
and the sheer ice

have left a trail of spinouts
and crashes

up and down Vail Pass.

We've got
two or three vehicles

down in the median
that we need to recover.

Any vehicle
stuck on the pass

creates a serious risk
of a secondary crash.

A simple spin-out

can snowball
into a complete shutdown.

These vehicles
are all presumably drivable,

so we're just winching them out
onto the roadway.

We're trying to do that
without a full closure.

One vehicle in particular

has grabbed Charlie's attention.

09, you want
to pull past the car,

and then I'll back it out.

All right, 10-4.

So, a family in a car

has just went and crashed
into the median,

lost control,

and they've been sitting
in the car for a while.

The state patrol
is trying to provide some room

to make the rescue.

A slow roll

is when either us
or police or CDOT

slowly lead the traffic queue
creating a traffic break,

so that our unit that's in front

has a little bit of time to work

before that traffic gets to him.

I'm just going to hook on,

and Charlie's going to just
pop 'em out real fast.

As fast as possible.

Collin is going to
hook up a kinetic energy rope

and J-chain to this vehicle,

and I'm going to back it out.

I'm not even going to
get out of my vehicle right now.

That family,
they've just crashed their car,

so they're having, you know,

one of the worst days
of their lives.

Okay, we gotta hurry,

because our traffic queue
is almost here.

The operator
in a slow roll situation

is definitely up against
a ticking clock.

Traffic is coming,

and you'd better be ready.

Kind of hectic right now.

It's just a dangerous situation.

that I have to take my attention
off of oncoming traffic

could be a second
that I get hit by a car

and lose my life.

We're literally putting him
on the bed right now,

so we should be quick.

Collin is loading,

and we're doing
as quick as we can.

We got this vehicle loaded,

The occupants are safe.

It's a sigh of relief for me,
we're out of that zone.

When it gets this bad,
and the road's this clogged,

it's about helping people.

That's our mission.

That's what we're going to do.

We're just going to take charge
and get this road open

no matter what it takes.

This one
is going to be a tough mess.

600 kilometres west of Vail,

Jesse from Stauffer's Towing

is answering an urgent call

5,000 feet up Provo Canyon

on Highway 189.

189 connects Orem

to Park City area.

This is the main highway,

and so if this is blocked,
it's a huge detour.

What we know so far

is that it's a rolled-over
tractor-trailer

loaded with french fries,

and they have the Canyon
completely closed.

The semi
lost control in wet conditions

on the tight curve...

rolling, and landing
between a wall of rock

and open water.

Man, this guy was cooking
around this corner.

It's kind of a blind corner

where you've got
two lanes of travel.

It's a busy canyon,

and just having
one lane of travel closed

for any period of time

causes a lot of delays
for a lot of people.

I'm just hoping
and praying

that we can get
some traffic going.

Hey, Kev.

Where are you
wanting this, Jesse?

Through the rim.

Through the rim.

The driver
suffered only minor injuries,

and luckily missed
rolling into the water,

but traffic is now forced
to alternate around the curve.

Jesse and crew need to get
both lanes flowing fast.

It's near rush hour
in the afternoon.

I'm definitely
feeling the crunch.

The first step for me

is I'm going to get
this tractor-trailer

slid over into this dirt,

so that way we can open up
all the lanes.

It's 80,000 pounds
on its side.

Getting that to slide
isn't the easiest.

I'm going to lift the tractor,

which'll in turn lift
the front of the trailer

rather than just dragging
this tractor across the asphalt.

-Good?
-Yeah.

You guys watch this.
I'm going to go watch the truck.

Okay.

It's heavy.

The front of the trailer
moves over.

Nice and easy.

Let's open it.

Traffic can now
flow in both directions,

but the semi is too close
to the open road

to safely lift it.

So the last thing
we want to do here

is scare a driver
that's driving by

with a tractor-trailer

that's slamming down
to the ground.

This thing's
gonna be a nightmare.

Both lanes are open again

on Highway 189 in Utah,

but they still
can't start the lift.

Okay, let 'er off.

Now boxed in
by live traffic,

the crew can't safely prep
for the lift

until they buy even more room...

So I'm gonna go
to the back of the trailer,

and Kevan's
gonna come around us

to the front of the tractor,

and we're gonna try
and slide this over

just a bit more.

...but with
40,000 pounds of freight inside,

they can't risk
sliding it further

until it's empty.

What is it with our roads

and making this happen
with french fries?

Why couldn't this be steak?

So it's going to be a...
hopefully a fast operation.

at least for my truck,

They need
to shift it just enough

to clear traffic,

but allow enough room to work.

to lift the trailer

as small of a road

and small of an area to work in,

we've got to be pretty precise.

They need to ease it down

clear of moving traffic,

but there's a more
unpredictable challenge

in working on the edge
of a live lane.

We were keeping
live traffic open.

It's not every day

the motoring public sees
a tractor-trailer upright,

and if they see that
coming over,

they could swerve,

come into our work scene,

go into oncoming traffic.

I don't know what
this one's gonna be like.

It's making me nervous
on how it's gonna go.

Finally some relief

for folks traveling near Vail.

The front is moving south,

and temperatures
are on the rise,

but roads could
still be slippery,

so please take some extra
caution behind the wheel.

The storm

that's dumped more than
eight inches of snow on I-70

is letting up,

but at the top of Vail Pass,

Charlie is still on high alert.

I just can't get off the Pass,

because there's just
so much action.

We got a semi
that just stopped

in a live lane of traffic
going uphill.

I think he's overheating.

What do you got, buddy?

He's pouring out coolant
right there.

One of his heater hoses busted.

It probably burned
on his exhaust

is what it looks like,

so he's not gonna get very far.

You wanna get a tow
to a safe spot?

I don't speak any Spanish.

He doesn't speak any English.

We cannot communicate.

It's a very dangerous

We're in a pocket
in a canyon...

He's trying
to open the system

so that he can get
more coolant in there,

but it's much too hot.

At almost
11,000 feet above sea level,

the boiling coolant
will burst out

under the low air pressure

if the lid comes off.

We're at 11,000 feet.

It just can't.

It's not good.

You're gonna lose
all your coolant.

We're up high.

It-it does not work...

It does not work
like down on low ground.

We don't have time for that,
you're blocking the road.

And he just wouldn't listen,

and he goes
and opens this thing.

And there goes his coolant.

The driver didn't
speak any English whatsoever,

and he goes
and opens this thing,

and now we have
a spew of coolant

coming out of this truck,

and it's just a mess.

It's not good.

At this elevation,
everything wants to explode.

We're blocking a lane
up here...

Charlie's only hope

is to call his mechanic
to the scene

for an emergency repair.

He's got a heater hose

that blew underneath his cab,

If you can come up
and help me out,

that'd be great.

My adrenaline's pumping.

We have traffic
going 65, 70 miles an hour

right next to you,

and we gotta get outta there
as quick as possible.

Luckily,

the mechanic is close by,

because traffic is building.

I can't communicate
with this guy at all.

Help is on scene
in just a few minutes.

He just blew
most of his coolant out.

He's got some leak
underneath the cab.

Matt's gonna take a look

and see if he can't pinch
that line off temporarily,

get him out of the lane.

Matt is able
to make a quick patch job,

and top up the coolant,

a temporary fix

to get the driver
to the next exit.

Perfect.

It's very common

to run up on people
that can't make decisions

because of the environment
and what's going on.

We do have compassion
on those people,

and we just wanna help them
in the best way possible,

and we just want to
get them out of there

so that we don't have
secondary incidents.

Just another day
in the life

on Vail Pass, I-70.

In Utah,

squeezed between traffic
and open water,

the Stauffer's crew
is rigged and ready

to roll the semi upright.

We've got to be precise.

We still need
to get this uprighted

without laying this back over
on the other side,

putting it back into traffic.

Good. Have him
get the tractor started.

So Kevan
will be rolling the tractor

and the front of the trailer,

and the rotator will be rolling
the back of the trailer.

Heavy on the front, Austin.

Have him get that front going.

Heavy on the nose.

We want to try to keep
these things in line

the best that we can,

but you want the tractor
to be leading the trailer

a little bit

to help pull the front
of the trailer over.

...and that's up to Kevan.

We have to be methodical.

We have to not rush into things,

and we have to work together

in order to make this happen.

but this was pretty close.

The rain and snow

are sticking
closer to mountains.

Bringing in some muscle.

On the eastern edge
of the Rockies,

Ciaran Loomis
and his Reliable Towing crew

are on the move south,

where the mountains give way
to dry, rocky terrain

known as high desert.

Today we're
winching out a big excavator.

It fell into a sinkhole.

Gross weight's
about 200,000 pounds on it.

Based 200
kilometres north in Longmont,

Reliable usually
works this highway

through
the Rocky Mountain foothills.

Some of the terrain here,

we go from, you know,

being flat land here

to some pretty scenic mountains.

Joining Ciaran for this job

is his older brother, Kevin.

I see him
as my younger brother,

but as far as
he's still the boss.

For me, at least,

it's easy to, like,
separate the two.

We've been trying
to do the elite work.

We get jobs,
and we get 'em done.

We get 'em done right.

We are a specialized company

in doing heavy recoveries,

and I think we're
pretty darn good at it.

We're small and mighty,

and we kind of
punch above our weight.

Today
they're facing a massive test.

We're definitely
in a heavyweight battle

against one big machine.

That's a very tight
little spot to work in.

We're working in
someone's backyard, pretty much.

It's stuck.
It's buried in a sandpit.

Whole ground is soft.

Yeah, all the way
from up there,

there's standing water
in this field right here, so...

Yeah.

Welcome to the high desert.

There's water right there.

Yup.

They just
had a storm roll in there.

The recent weather
that we had in the area

melted down,

and it all filtered
into this basin,

so the groundwater
was very high,

and the excavator was so heavy

that the track broke through.

Yeah, you can already
see it breaking up.

Yeah.

The saturated soil gave way

under the heavy weight,

and it could happen again.

We're on borrowed time
on that ground.

There's two more anchors.

We can go get more if you need.

I think between
the two wreckers

and these,

I don't think we're going
to have any more room.

It's going to be
a real tight recovery.

It's a very tight
little spot to work in.

Let's probably do a quick
walkaround with my guys,

and kind of see
what we got to do.

In the high desert of Colorado,

Reliable Towing
is facing a heavy job

on unstable ground,

and the challenges keep coming.

So we are actually
in somebody's driveway

rescuing this close to
200,000-pound excavator

and drill head.

We got fences, buildings,
water lines, electrical lines.

This is a real tight one.

Very little room

to wrestle such a mammoth weight

from the grip of the sinkhole.

Let's figure out
what we're doing in here.

Everything has a weight,

and dispersing it
when you get to a job like this

is a big key
to not burying a truck

and being able
to recover an excavator.

It looks like we could go

under those hydraulic lines...

to the cylinder
on the other side

and come out and over.

As you're picking it,
he's pulling it,

I'm pulling it.

We had to really
kind of calculate

where our trucks
were going to be,

and that we didn't have
the option

of moving stuff around.

Plan A had to be Plan A

and no other plan.

Plan A...

Ciaran's rotator will lift
and slide the drill head,

while the two wreckers
ease the excavator

from the sinkhole,

and they'll use
a second excavator and a loader

as anchors
to direct the pull.

I'm going to
back the rotator in now

and get back down in here.

But pulling
this much weight

will put extreme pressure

on the soft earth below.

We need to spread
everything out

and reduce the compression
on the ground,

and especially once I put
my full weight on these,

it could come down
into the ground pretty easily.

We got a ton of iron
in a small spot.

Just some light cloud

up in the mountains around Vail

with plenty of blue skies.

The temperatures
are currently hovering

just around the freezing mark.

200 kilometres north,

I-70 is finally getting a break

after days of relentless snow.

How's it looking?

But off of the highway,

Mountain Recovery
is back at work.

Had a mixer that came
around the corner here,

and looks like it lost
the steer tire,

and the weight of the cement

took him
the rest of the way over.

You can't really wait
with these.

You gotta get stuff done
as fast as you can.

The cement is drying
as we're sitting here.

Concrete truck 101.

the truck slid
and rolled over the edge.

The driver was unharmed,

but now the truck is at risk.

It's a big deal
if the cement dries.

Then they got to
chip it all out of the drum

and all that,

so just trying to get
everything rigged up

as fast as we can,

and get this thing rolled over.

So Big Jon
will cradle the drum

while Kory pulls down,

or spikes the cab.

Together, they need to quickly
lift the truck upright.

We got a chain going
from the frame

wrapped around the drum
to the other side

so that way,
when we roll it over,

this whole drum
will stay attached

and not come apart.

Yeah, keep pulling.

The truck

but coaxing it onto the road

is a whole other challenge.

So, we got to get
up this big embankment.

It's going to be
a little bit of a fight.

and get your actual spade in,

nosed out towards the...

This truck's
at a 45-degree angle

on this embankment right now,

and there's a big concern

that we lose control over this,

and it rolls down the hill.

It's hard to tell
with that bank

what it's going to want to do.

It's not gonna be easy.

It's a lot of heavy stuff.

This one is
gonna be a fight for sure.

Back
in the high desert of Colorado,

the Reliable crew

has been assembling
their heaviest hardware

for a heavyweight battle.

How do you want
to start the rigging

on the back side of this?

There is some pretty big
shackle points there,

so we're going to need
some big chains.

There's some math involved

in figuring out
what the machine weighs,

and then that tells us
how many lines we need.

We're doing
this extra step

taking care of all our rigging

because
if the winch cable breaks,

it's... very scary.

Okay, so now that line
needs to come back

through a block
here at the middle.

I'll put some more shackles
on this side.

With that much rigging,

that's where Kevin and I
have the experience

of laying out that stuff.

You can't just willy-nilly
put winch lines here and there.

This is a lot
of rigging to keep straight.

We're going to end up

running somewhere around
10 lines to this.

Their rotator
and two wreckers

will share the load

via a complex network
of winch lines.

This is mentally,
uh, challenging.

On a scale of one to ten,

this is definitely
an eight or a nine.

They need it
to be perfect,

but they can't take
any more time.

up out of here.

We gotta get it
out of this sand pit

before it goes
any further in there.

is just so steep.

You know, if we're not careful,

this truck can go over,

and then we will have

In Colorado,

the crew is fighting

to wrangle the cement truck
to the road.

I'm pretty much
holding it in the air.

it's going to fight it.

The unstable load in the drum

is fighting back

as they try to ease it
up the embankment.

The truck just wants to come
up the bank, up the hill,

not over the top of the bank.

We need it to come
over the top of the bank.

It's starting to put
a lot of pressure on my truck.

We can put
my drag winch on it,

and we can winch it
right through the snowbank too.

Yeah.

Let's do that.

We're just going to fight that
the whole way.

This edge is just
way too steep

for it to want to naturally
come up as we pull it.

We're just going
to drag it up the ditch.

Rather than fight it.

You can just
free-spool and pull forward.

Get out there farther.

So, plan B is we're going
to winch it up the ditch,

so there's a pull-out
on the side of the road

about a hundred feet
up the road.

Should be able to just pull it
right up onto the road there,

and we don't have to worry about
the big bank on the side.

To pull it
along on its wheels...

...they'll need some help

in the driver's seat.

Try to go out into the ditch

These trucks, when they
don't have power steering,

it's heavy,
it's a 20,000-pound steer axle

that you're trying
to manually turn.

It's not going to be easy.

We put Gil in the truck

'cause he always wanted to be
a cement truck driver.

If I'd have known I was
going to be doing this...

...I wouldn't have worked out!

We're trying to keep it up
off that embankment

so it doesn't roll.

You can't really get it
because it's locked in.

It's just
such a hard angle right now.

it's hollow underneath this road

where the rotator is.

In the high desert,

the Reliable crew
has been racing

to brace their outriggers.

a ice recovery, almost,

of you can't break the ice,

because you're just
going to fall in.

We had to kind of regroup
on the front outrigger

and build a bigger platform
for that outrigger

so we would not give out.

They need
to better distribute

the weight of their trucks

under the force
of the heavy pull ahead.

and add more support
for the outrigger,

but that delay

poses its own danger.

into a recovery like this

that worse things can happen
if we start redoing everything.

We could be on borrowed time

the earth
was just cracking away,

and we had Josh's truck
on one side

and the escape route
was on the other,

and we were definitely
in a time crunch.

It's getting his truck

It's a race
to rescue the loader

before their own equipment
suffers the same fate.

It was nerve-racking.

It was like DEFCON 5 happened,

and we needed to move
before we got swallowed up.

I'm glad to see
that thing rolling!

It's a big relief.
