[Episode 17]

Master.

Lord Liu of the Qing government in Tianjin...

had contacted me many times.

However, due to Huo Yuan Jia's injuries,

I plan to release him two months later.

The longer he stays in jail,

the slower he recovers.

Consul,

I think...

you understand what I've just said.

Consul,

will you let me take him back today?

You want to take him back today?

You are making things difficult for me.

Let's do it today, friend.

We can't wait to see him.

Okay.

I do it because of the gold bars.

[Prosperity and Wealth]

-Look! -Look!

They are carrying a man.

Go away. There is nothing to see.

Please go home.

Put me down.

Yuan Jia, take it easy.

It takes 100 days for injuries to heal, let alone internal ones.

No.

No way will I let my mother...

see me being carried into my own house.

Put me down.

Uncle.

Listen to my master.

Okay.

Come on.

Come, watch out.

Leave me alone.

[Huo Residence]

My son.

-My son is back. -Mother.

-Mother. -My son.

My son.

My son is back.

My son.

Mother.

What happened to your eyes?

Nothing.

All that matters is you're back, my son.

Mother.

Yuan Jia, your mother was so worried.

She cried every night.

Her eye sight worsens day by day.

My son is back.

I am back.

I've been an unfilial son.

Mother.

My son.

-Mother. -My son.

Your wife is here.

Easy there.

Yuan Jia.

You have to thank your wife.

In order to go to the capital to file a complaint,

she weaned the baby.

As a woman,

I take my hat off to her.

Yuan Jia.

Zhen Sheng.

Xiao Wu.

Xiao Wu!

We performed a funeral for Xiao Wu, Master.

Where is he buried?

Bring me there.

You're badly injured.

Now that you're home,

you should get some rest.

Please pay him a visit...

when you have recovered.

Bring me there.

Xiao Wu.

Once my mother passes on,

I will avenge you.

Otherwise, I have no right to call myself your teacher.

Yuan Jia, let's go home.

You need to recuperate.

You saved me from Mr. Bertrand.

You must have spent a lot.

You should ask Ah Fa.

Ah Fa?

It's a gift from him.

Don't feel bad about it.

You've taught him martial arts and life lessons.

Those things are invaluable.

Helping his master...

is his duty.

For his apprentice,

a master should do anything.

However, a master must never be indebted to his apprentice.

Or I have no right to be called a master.

The French consul is greedy.

The price he'd paid for my freedom must be really high.

I must pay him back.

The western doctor you've hired for me...

was really something else.

You know that I hired a doctor for you?

That's great.

Let's go back.

Dr. Federer must be waiting for you at home.

I shall leave now.

I have something important to do at the capital.

I've been putting it off for days.

It's my fault.

You've saved me once again.

I don't know how to repay your kindness.

What are you saying?

You and I are sworn brothers.

We are a family. You don't have to repay me.

Besides,

the person who contributed the most was your wife.

If she hadn't gone to the capital,

even if I'd bribed Bertrand...

and saved you from that prison,

you'd still be charged for treason.

Dr. Federer.

Please come in and have some tea.

Yuan Jia has gone out.

We don't know when will he be back.

It might take a long time.

No worries.

There are so many weapons.

I am interested to try them out one by one.

Xiao Lian, check on the tea.

Please have some tea while you try out the weapons.

Thank you. I am not thirsty.

Hold on.

You are Mrs. Huo?

You must be an expert, too.

Do you know how to use this weapon?

Let me take a photo for you.

I...

Mrs. Huo comes from a rich family.

How could you do that?

Xiao Lian.

Dr. Federer.

Yuan Jia is a martial arts expert,

but I know nothing about it.

I am sorry.

Please put the weapon back.

Don't couples in China always work together closely as man and wife?

It's a shame that you don't practise martial arts.

Master, watch out for the staircases.

Yuan Jia, Mr. Nong has hired a doctor for you.

It is I, Federer!

Who is Huo Yuan Jia?

Come forward and answer me!

You westerners are so rude!

Who are you to talk rudely to my master?

Ah Fa!

Master told us...

not to accept the westerners' oppression.

I am not oppressing you.

I was just kidding.

I am the doctor hired by Nong Jin Sun.

Doctor?

Ah Fa.

Look.

This person doesn't look like the person...

who gave me the injections in the prison.

No, he is not.

How dare you impersonate the doctor?

Who sent you here?

He is an imposter.

Da You, beat him up!

Stop.

Anyhow,

this is my house.

No fighting.

I am not an imposter.

You are Huo Yuan Jia, right?

My name is Federer.

I am hired by Nong Jin Sun to treat you.

Federer?

Today, Jin Sun told me...

the doctor that he hired is called Federer.

Master.

Although that doctor always wore a mask,

I'm pretty sure...

it's not him!

What are you saying?

Of course, whoever you've met before was not me.

This is my first time here.

Master.

Yuan Jia.

-What's wrong? -What's wrong?

Huo Yuan Jia, are you not feeling well?

Get inside the house.

Let me examine your body.

-Come. -Come.

You've been listening to my heartbeat forever.

Where's my injection?

Injection?

What for?

My whole body is not feeling well.

Don't you have painkillers?

Just give me an injection.

All the wounds have recovered.

There's no inflammation.

You don't need an injection.

You are not a doctor!

Of course I am a doctor.

I haven't seen any doctor...

who brings along a camera!

You are more like a reporter.

You are right!

I am a reporter, too.

It's like this.

I have been making use of my free time...

to write news for European media.

I have also...

I have also written an article...

about Huo Yuan Jia.

You sent Tan Si Tong off at the execution ground.

Also, you put yourself at risk...

and beheaded Big Knife Wang Wu.

I've included both the incidents in the article.

Of course, I didn't get to interview you.

I heard the stories from someone else.

However, now I have the chance.

We can have a talk.

For example,

your family members were killed...

because of what you did.

Do you regret it?

Do you hate the government?

Send him out.

You may not need injections,

but you need to take medicine.

Throw him out!

-Go! -Go!

Get out!

-Go away! -Go away!

Nong Jin Sun...

He...

-Go away! -He hired me!

-Go away! -But...

Don't blame me if I beat you up!

You are Ah Fa, right?

I heard Huo Yuan Jia calling your name.

So what?

I guess you are Nong Jin Sun's relative.

Am I right?

Nong Jin Sun told me about you.

You shouldn't treat me like you did the other westerners.

My uncle hired a doctor,

not a reporter.

I know.

That's why I am going to do my duty as a doctor.

Take the medicine.

Pass it to Huo Yuan Jia.

Tell him to take it when he is in pain. He will feel much relieved.

Just remember,

no more than three pills a day.

I brought the medicine from Europe.

It's very precious.

Are you asking money from me?

No.

Nong Jin Sun has paid for the medical fees.

You may leave now.

I...

I am really sorry for what happened.

I shouldn't have mentioned Huo's family...

and made him upset.

Yuan Jia.

You should take a nap.

You wouldn't feel the pain when you are asleep.

No.

I want to take a look at my son.

I feel less in pain when I look at him.

By the way,

I need to tell you something.

Sha Yan.

Persuade her...

to leave Tianjin immediately.

Why?

Since you took her in,

you haven't taught her a thing.

She has been expelled.

I didn't know that.

You are just a woman.

Why should I tell you everything?

In short,

I don't want to see her at home.

Master, how do you feel?

You are sweating profusely.

I don't think we can rely on the western doctor.

Gao Qi will send for a Chinese doctor.

It won't take long.

Tell Ah Fa to meet me in the training room.

-Master! -Master!

Stop training as you are severely injured.

If you hurt your internal organs,

it could turn ugly.

I know what I am doing!

Who are you to stop me?

Get out.

Master.

Ah Fa.

You went into prison because of me.

I feel really guilty.

Master, it was an honour to share your hardships with you.

Stop saying that.

Okay.

In order to save me out from the prison,

you must have given quite a lot of gold bars.

What gold bars?

That's not true.

Your uncle told me the truth.

Don't hide it from me.

How many gold bars did you give?

Not many.

Does that mean my life is not precious?

No.

How many gold bars?

I...

Tell me!

Forty gold bars.

Come again?

Forty gold bars.

Forty gold bars?

People have died in the Huo Residence.

It's not auspicious.

Even if I sell the place, I won't be able to repay you.

Sell the house?

Where will you and your family stay?

Master, I gave the gold bars on my own accord.

You don't owe me anything.

How dare you!

A master must never take advantage of his apprentice!

Master!

Master!

I am sorry, Ah Fa.

I can't bear the pain.

That's why I am grumpy.

Master, please take a pill.

It's given by Federer.

I'm not taking that quack's medicine.

Master.

I've tried the medicine.

It does stop pain.

Why don't you give it a try?

No!

How do you know the medicine works?

I...

I took Xiao Lian's laundry stick...

and hit my own head.

Then, I took one pill.

Which part did you hit?

Which part did you hit?

This part.

That's a huge bump.

Ah Fa.

You're not a child anymore.

Are you crazy?

Master.

The medicine can stop pain.

Just take one.

You are such a filial boy.

I shall take it.

Take one whenever you're in pain,

but no more than three pills a day.

Got it.

It would be best to find that doctor who gave me injections.

The medicine he prescribed is effective.

Don't worry, Master.

My uncle is not in Tianjin right now.

But I know it was Chang De Li of the concession...

who brought the doctor to the prison.

If we find Chang De Li,

we'll find that doctor.

I will go French Concession now.

All this pain is getting to me.

How could I forget Chang De Li?

-Go now. -Yes.

Hold on.

As to Xiao Lian,

I shall give you an answer tonight.

Thank you, Master.

Master.

I don't need help. I can still walk.

Xiao Lian.

Master Yuan Jia, you wish to see me?

How old are you?

I am 19 years old.

It's the right time to get married.

Tell me.

Are you willing to marry my apprentice?

Master Yuan Jia, I...

I shouldn't be the one who popped the question.

However, judging by your expression,

I know you are willing.

Okay.

I shall discuss with Dong Jue's mother...

to arrange a wedding for you.

Silly boy.

What's wrong?

You want to get married, too?

Master, I...

Yuan Jia, have some tea.

Has Sha Yan left?

No.

What's wrong?

You can't even get a simple task done.

You made her your apprentice,

but you've taught her nothing.

How can we ask her to leave?

She broke the rule.

She killed a man.

She has to be expelled.

If she hadn't gotten Xue Xue's confession,

how would I file that complaint?

How could I have rescued you?

I was rescued by the 40 gold bars.

Of course,

without your complaint,

even if I managed to escape the French prison,

I wouldn't be able to clear myself of Ying Si's accusations.

I am sorry.

I am really upset today.

That's why I am not talking right.

My wife,

you must have suffered a lot on your way to the capital.

Please accept my gratitude.

Don't do this.

Yuan Jia.

We are husband and wife.

It was nothing.

But Sha Yan...

I know that both of you address each other as sisters.

You like her.

However, she is a bandit.

She has killed a man.

She's killed an important government official.

If we keep her at home,

it would do neither her nor us any good.

Ying Si...

could be spying on us.

Sha Yan is staying at our place.

If any harm comes to her,

what would I say to Sha Lang?

I know my sister well.

You can't chase her away.

If you want her to leave,

you have to teach her something.

After all, she kowtowed to you.

I will tell her not to go out too often...

and stay in her room.

If day time is inconvenient,

you can teach her at night.

But she's a woman.

It'd be inappropriate to teach her at night.

I can't think of a better idea.

[Master!]

Come in.

Master, the Chinese doctor is here.

Let him examine your pulse.

Master Huo, your pulse seems a little strange.

What do you mean?

It doesn't seem that you are injured.

More like...

Like what?

I am not sure.

We have a set of rules.

When we are unsure of something, we shouldn't simply say it.

Doctor, my master sustained injuries.

Two westerners took turns hitting him, causing internal injuries.

Please prescribe him a medicine to make him better.

Well...

All right.

I shall prescribe him some medicine.

Master, Madam, I'm off to buy herbs.

Hold on.

Let Da You do it.

Send the doctor off, please.

Yes, Master.

Mister, this way please.

Three of you, come over here.

Master, what is your bidding?

I've injured myself.

I don't think I can practise martial arts for now.

Starting today,

Zhen Sheng and Gao Qi will take my place...

and teach Sha Yan the Deceptive Fist and the Huo Spear Method.

Yes, Master.

Thank you, Master.

Sha Yan.

Your seniors have learned everything from me.

You must learn from them.

The training will take three months.

After you've mastered it,

I'll throw a feast to celebrate your graduation.

Yuan Jia, don't you think your decision was a little rash?

Don't question my decision.

Do me another favour.

The Huo family has been in bad luck for some time.

I want to host a wedding to get rid of the unluckiness.

Wedding?

What wedding?

Your servant, Xiao Lian...

How old is she?

She is 19 years old.

See? You remember it.

She should get married soon.

I have asked for her permission.

She is willing to marry my apprentice.

This apprentice of mine is filial.

When I recall the things he did for me,

I couldn't help but tear up.

I have nothing to offer in return.

The only thing that I can do is to organise the wedding.

You know about it?

Of course.

When we were in Shanxi on escort duty,

he told me that...

he likes Xiao Lian.

Looks like he's closer to you.

He never told me even though I'm his elder.

No.

He'd sought your approval.

He even told me...

you promised to ask for Xiao Lian's consent.

However, you didn't get back to him.

You must be so worried about me that it slipped your mind.

It's okay.

Let's make a grand wedding...

to make it up to him.

The more you talk, the more confused I am.

Da You didn't tell me anything.

No matter how bad my memory is,

I wouldn't have had...

Da You?

No one is talking about Xu Da You.

It's Ah Fa.

Ah Fa is in love with Xiao Lian.

Furthermore, he promised that...

his parents will agree to their union.

I believe that.

His uncle, Nong Jin Sun is a forward thinking man.

That's not right.

Xiao Lian is in love with Da You,

not Ah Fa.

What are you talking about?

Da You is nothing but a boring guy.

No way Xiao Lian is in love with him.

Furthermore,

we can't decide based on Xiao Lian's will.

You know Ah Fa's personality and background well.

If Xiao Lian marries Ah Fa,

it would be a blessing.

Now I understand what are you saying.

Ah Fa did come to me,

and I'd agreed to ask her.

But when I did,

she told me clearly...

that she likes Da You, not Ah Fa.

Ah Fa just came out of prison with you.

I didn't have the chance to tell him.

If you ask me,

I think Da You and Xiao Lian are a perfect match.

Da You is an orphan.

As his master, you should oversee the matter...

and expedite the wedding.

Mother's here.

I am thinking for Xiao Lian.

Don't cry.

You brought Xiao Lian into the family.

Don't you care about her happiness?

Here.

Yuan Jia, calm down.

Take a rest.

Yun Ying.

Let me oversee this matter.

I could do something for Xiao Lian...

and repay Ah Fa's kindness.

In order to save me,

he had sold off his properties in Nanyang.

40 gold bars.

It was no small figure.

Da You didn't have gold bars,

but he protected me on our journey to the capital.

During the journey,

do you know how many times he got beaten up?

No wonder you speak in Da You's favour.

You feel indebted to him, don't you?

No.

Xiao Lian has made herself clear.

She likes Da You.

She is willing to live in poverty with him.

Ah Fa is a nice guy,

but he is not meant for Xiao Lian.

You think we're meant for each other?

I refused to marry you back then.

When we're just married,

I always called you a jinx.

Don't you remember?

Xiao Lian is just a servant.

I have the final say in this family.

Xiao Lian will marry Ah Fa.

And that's that.

Da You.

Master.

The medicine is ready.

Please take it while it is hot.

Da You,

Young Lady promised me.

She did speak on our behalf,

but my master refused to listen.

Master is the head of the family.

His decision is final.

But I want to marry you!

It's pointless to say anything now!

I couldn't find you two anywhere.

Turns out you two are here.

Young Lady.

Madam.

Stop crying.

Xu Da You, answer me.

Do you really like Xiao Lian?

Yes.

Xiao Lian, where is your hair pin?

It's here, Young Lady.

I've always known.

Whenever you wear that hair pin,

you would smile non-stop.

Sometimes, you'd burst out in giggles.

Tell me.

Who gave you that hair pin?

Brother Da You.

So, both of you have pledged to marry each other a long time ago?

Da You.

Your master was severely hurt at the westerners' treacherous hands.

He sweats profusely.

Worse yet, he would burst into temper.

It's impossible to knock some sense into him at the moment.

He might not even realise he's making a wrong decision.

However, marriage is no small matter.

He is in no position to make the decision.

You should leave now.

Find a place to hide.

What?

Xiao Lian, I am at ease when you are with Da You.

Take the money with you.

Take this as well.

Consider them your dowry.

Young Lady!

Da You, I entrust you with Xiao Lian.

You must take good care of her.

No, Madam.

Are you asking both of us to run away in secret?

I asked both of you to leave.

It's not considered elopement.

Yuan Jia is not in the right frame of mind.

If he forces Xiao Lian to marry Ah Fa,

things could end badly.

You two should leave now.

When he's calmed down,

I will explain it to him.

Once he sees how much you two love each other,

he would be glad for you.

You two can come back, then.

No.

I will never go against my master's wishes.

What are you saying?

Master treats me well.

He taught me martial arts and life lessons.

I can't disobey him!

How about Xiao Lian?

I shall let Master to decide our fate.

Xu Da You.

You are a martial arts practitioner,

yet you can't even protect the woman you love.

Your master taught you life lessons.

Didn't he teach you to be a responsible man?

Looks like Yuan Jia was right.

You are not reliable.

Xiao Lian.

Just forget about Xu Da You.

-I... -Come with me.

Young Lady!

Da You!

I...

[Consulate General De France]

Mr. Chang De Li.

Who are you?

I am Ah Fa, Huo Yuan Jia's apprentice.

Now I remember.

You are the one who went into the prison with him.

Step aside.

I am going to see the Consul.

Please hold on.

I'd like to know...

where to find the doctor.

The doctor who gave my master injections in the prison.

That doctor.

What is his name?

Where is his clinic?

Which hospital does he work at?

He has gone home.

He has gone back to the United States.

He left this morning.

I had just sent him off.

What?

Do you know what medicine he gave my master?

Where can I find that medicine?

How would I know?

Since the doctor is gone,

you will have to consult another doctor.

Go away!

Don't hold me up from completing the task assigned by the Consul.

Huang Wen Fa!

Da You?

Come with me!

Come with me!

Da You, why can't we talk at home?

I went to the concession.

Master is waiting to hear from me.

You are despicable!

What are you saying?

I will teach you a lesson!

Da You, let's fight at home.

Master could give us pointers.

Xu Da You!

Are you crazy?

I am not crazy!

I should have known earlier!

You are a bad guy!

You say one thing and do another!

What did I do wrong?

Tell me!

You know it well!

Xu Da You!

You attacked your senior for no good reason!

Fine!

I shall teach you a lesson on behalf of our master!

Father!

Mother!

I don't want to live anymore!

I shall come and join you!

Da You!

Da You!

You are crazy!

You are crazy!

Why do you want to die?

It's because of you!

Because of me?

Don't act dumb!

You used your family's wealth...

and redeemed our master with 40 gold bars...

all because of Xiao Lian!

Xiao Lian?

Since when do you love Xiao Lian?

I...

I have always loved her!

We promised each other we'd be together forever.

No way!

Xiao Lian is in love with me!

She smiles whenever she sees me.

Her smile is so sweet.

She also offers to do laundry for me.

Nonsense!

Mrs. Huo agreed to our union.

If it weren't for you,

both of us would have gotten married!

No way!

That's impossible!

Xu Da You.

Come home with me!

Let's settle this with Xiao Lian!

Fine! Let's do it!
