[Episode 16]

Quickly get out of here.

Otherwise, you won't be able to leave when they call for help.

Master.

Don't call me that again.

All the best to you.

I spent all the money in vain.

We even risked our lives to save you.

Huo Yuan Jia!

You're being pedantic!

Have you lost your mind?

Just you wait.

You're going to die in this place!

Let's go!

This is bad!

This is bad!

-What's the matter? -This is bad.

Someone broke into the jail to rescue Huo Yuan Jia!

What?

Huo Yuan Jia?

Hurry.

Huo Yuan Jia, where are they?

Who?

Those two who broke into the jail.

Broke into the jail?

What's with that?

Why are you acting dumb?

Those two that I brought in here!

Did you bring them here?

You're a policeman.

Why would you bring people to break into the jail?

Did they pay you?

You said you wanted to inspect the torture instrument...

and opened the gate.

After that, you passed out.

I was the one who saved you.

I just recalled.

I passed out on my own.

I've been having a toothache in the past two days...

and haven't been able to sleep.

I probably got sick because of that.

Get lost!

I'll leave.

Huo Yuan Jia.

This way, please.

I'm not interested to have a boxing match with the Consul.

There won't be a boxing match today.

There's a trial.

A trial?

Didn't you say there's a trial?

What are you trying to do?

This is the rule of the French Concession.

You'll know what's going to happen in a moment.

Sirs.

Thank you.

Officer!

What are you doing?

Master?

Master.

Yuan Jia?

Ah Fa, calm down!

Let go of me!

My master has stopped breathing!

I want to avenge my master!

They have guns!

I'm not afraid!

They killed my master!

It's blood for blood!

Ah Fa!

Ah Fa!

-Ah Fa! -Ah Fa.

If you don’t want your master to die for real,

come over and help out.

Take him back to his cell.

You piece of trash!

Don't you know that he is not an ordinary prisoner?

He's my guest!

My VIP guest!

I can double the gold bar.

It'll be delivered within three months.

Release Huo Yuan Jia at once.

We'll give him treatments.

No.

If he gets out in this condition,

it will bring a bad reputation to the French Concession.

I disagree.

If so, promise me.

No one can hurt him from now on.

Huo Yuan Jia was beaten because of the jailbreak.

My men did nothing wrong.

If this goes on...

Yuan Jia will die in the prison. You...

Don't you want those gold bars?

Honestly,

my hands are tied.

Unless you send people in here to protect him.

But this is a prison.

It's not somewhere you can just come as you wish.

Mr. Bertrand.

Let your men follow me!

Fresh flowers for sale!

Would you like to buy flowers?

Fresh flowers!

Sirs, would you like to buy flowers?

Flowers?

Pretty.

What are you doing?

Let go of me!

Let go of me!

Help!

Help!

Let go of me!

My tooth!

My tooth!

Arrest me!

I broke his tooth.

Arrest me and send me to jail!

Master.

Master.

It's time to leave.

After all, this is a prison.

Not your home.

Ah Fa.

Uncle, don't worry.

I'm here now.

No one can hurt my master now.

Ah Fa.

All right now.

Let's go.

Master.

Master.

Master, drink some water.

What did you say?

He's not dead yet?

I want you dead since he isn't!

Spare my life, Lord Lu!

I'll find other ways.

This is going to be tough.

His disciple...

is in prison now to protect him.

What are you mumbling about?

My Lord, don't worry.

I'll surely find a way to get rid of Huo Yuan Jia.

[Give way]

There's been a great injustice! My Lord, please give us justice!

How dare you? If there's an injustice, go to the government office!

Why get in Lord Xu, the Assistant Minister of Rites' way?

People, get her out of the way!

-Yes! -Yes!

-Arrest them! -Yes!

Xiao Lian, take Mrs. Huo and leave!

Hold on!

Da You, stand behind me.

Officers.

I'm not from around here.

It's my first time here, and I came to the wrong person.

Please forgive me.

My servant is too impetuous.

Please don't take it to heart.

If you dare to get in Lord Xu's way again,

I'll have all of you arrested!

Let's go.

[Court of Judicial Review]

My Lord!

[Injustice]

There's been a great injustice!

My Lord, please give us justice!

Why are you here again?

Your husband was arrested in the Westerner's concession.

It's beyond our jurisdiction.

He was arrested in the concession.

But he was framed by court officials.

I have the testimony of Xue Xue, the magistrate of Dong'guang.

My Lord, please give us justice!

My Lord!

-My Lord! -Leave!

-Leave! -My Lord!

-There's been a great injustice! -Leave!

Teach her a lesson, or she'll still come back tomorrow!

Stop!

[Ministry of Justice]

[Censorate]

[Injustice]

I'm here today...

to tell you some good news.

Huo Yuan Jia's case...

has caught the attention of the imperial government.

The Censorate called Lu Si Ying back to the capital...

to give an account of what had happened...

and to negotiate Huo Yuan Jia's release...

with the Westerners.

I believe Mrs. Huo has successfully taken it to the court.

Are you saying it was Huo Yuan Jia's wife...

-who took it to court? -That's right.

She's been to the capital for ten days.

This young man who has loved martial arts since young...

is one lucky man.

He got himself a good wife.

I'm ordered to return to the capital to explain the matter...

and negotiate with the Westerner for his release.

His entire family has been wiped out!

Yet, there are people who stood up for Huo Yuan Jia!

Who's that?

I've asked around.

I think it was Huo Yuan Jia's wife.

Huo Yuan Jia's wife has gone to the capital?

Great!

Tell our men to get rid of her!

Don't give her a quick death.

I've told them.

But she managed to take it to the court.

I think she's back to Tianjin.

Our men wanted to kill her on her way back.

But they failed to catch up to her.

A piece of trash!

A bunch of trash!

Madam.

We will be home in four more hours.

You were running around to take the case to the court.

I think you haven't slept the whole time.

Take a short nap.

It's all safe now.

Don't worry.

I'm really sleepy.

I'll rest for a bit then.

Mrs. Huo is back?

Da You!

Xiao Lian!

-Second Young Mistress. -Madam.

Slowly.

Gao Qi.

How is it? Is there any news about your master?

Yes.

Mr. Nong is here. Let's talk inside.

Mrs. Huo, don't be so upset.

Ah Fa is with him.

I believe no one will try to harm Yuan Jia again.

Actually, I should have seen this coming.

Given Yuan Jia's upright character,

how would he possibly be unscathed...

in the Westerner's prison?

But after hearing this...

I still couldn't help myself.

Second Young Mistress.

Don't cry.

Young Master Dong Jue hasn't seen you for over ten days now.

If you get too upset and can't breastfeed him,

the child...

All right.

I won't be sad anymore.

Yuan Jia is highly skilled in martial arts...

with great internal force.

No matter how badly he gets hurt,

he can surely get through it.

Right, you managed to take the case to the court...

and with Lord Liu's help,

Yuan Jia will be back home...

in no time.

I've found him the best physician...

from Switzerland, Mr. Federer.

He is skilled in medicine,

and proficient in both medicine and surgery.

Also, he's friendly to Chinese people,

and has great admiration for Chinese culture and martial arts.

He knows that Yuan Jia is a martial artist...

and agreed to treat him.

I believe he'll recover after some time.

This is great!

You don't have to worry now.

I'll bring Young Master Dong Jue over.

No.

I'm going to greet Mother first.

Mother.

I haven't been around to look after you.

Please forgive me.

Hurry.

Get up.

Come over.

Mother.

My daughter-in-law.

I know you went to the capital.

It's not easy for women to bring a case to the court.

It's been hard on you.

Mother, don't say that.

Sister!

Mother, lie down.

Sister.

You're back.

Sister.

Sorry to trouble you in the past few days.

We're a family. Don't stand on ceremony.

But it's been hard on this kid.

Whenever I hear him cry...

it pains my heart.

It's all good now, Dong Jue.

Your mother is back.

You'll get to drink milk now.

Here.

Don't cry.

Don't cry.

Trash!

Why did I keep trash like you two?

Who was the one who told me...

that those two from the Snake Shadow Sect would like to seek refuge with me?

That's right, Lord Lu.

Would you like to see them?

See them?

Am I someone they can meet as they wish?

Tell them.

Get rid of Huo Yuan Jia's mother,

wife and children!

Consider it their proof of allegiance!

When the time comes...

I'll place them in important positions.

Yes!

What is the name of the interpreter in the French Consulate?

Chang De Li.

No news recently?

No.

He hides in the French Concession and refused to come out.

He wouldn't see me.

-Can't you grab him then? -All right.

Go now!

[Victoria Restaurant]

Rickshaw!

-To the Consulate. -Sure!

You fool!

I'm going to the Consulate. Why did you take me here?

We've arrived.

Arrived?

Damn!

It hurts so much!

Please spare my life.

Move!

Here.

Great.

Don't move!

Come out!

My Lord.

I told you to invite the interpreter here.

Is this how you invite him?

-Get out. -Yes.

Let's go.

Give him some massages.

Go on.

-My Lord. -My Lord.

Lord Lu, spare my life!

Lord Lu!

Do you deserve it then?

Yes.

Lord Lu, you aren't aware.

That incident pissed the Consul off.

They have assigned guards.

If we want to get rid of Huo Yuan Jia now, that's...

that will be too difficult!

I know it hasn't been easy for you.

The reason I asked you here...

is not to ask you\nto get rid of Huo Yuan Jia.

If he gets a quick and painless death,

it's not going to appease me either.

I want to make his life a living hell.

You're the only one...

who can help me with that.

I...

Please don't!

If you don't help me,

I'll make your life a living hell.

Last month,

Huo Yuan Jia showed up in Shanxi, Shouyang County.

The people gave him an inscribed tablet.

Why don't you guess what was written on it?

I don't know.

"The Warrior Against Opium."

I want to crush him and turn him into a tobacco addict!

A damn addict!

When he's a bag of bones and become weak and frail,

I'll strangle him to death with one hand...

to get my sweet revenge!

Master.

Master.

You're awake.

Ah Fa?

Why are you here?

I'm here to keep you company.

Master, you've suffered so much.

Those abominable Westerners...

do as they wish.

They treat our people like ants.

You, youngsters, need to toughen up.

Don't let the Westerners trample on you anymore.

Master!

Master!

People!

Quickly get the doctor!

My master vomited blood!

Quickly get the doctor!

What's with all the yelling?

The doctor just came to check on him yesterday.

That doctor was a swindler!

He doesn't know how to treat the patient.

My master is badly injured.

We can't let him endure the pain.

Stop shouting.

I've brought the doctor.

-Open the gate. -Yes.

Hold on.

What injection is that?

Test it on me first.

I don't trust the Westerners.

Young man.

Your uncle is Mr. Nong, right?

He's an interpreter too.

How did you know?

Come over.

I'm a friend of your uncle.

Let me tell you.

Those doctors and physicians they brought back then were just for show.

Think about it. How would the Consul get a real doctor for your master?

But your uncle knows...

if Huo Yuan Jia's condition is left untreated...

it will kill him.

That's why he sent me.

Master!

Master.

Master.

Doctor.

The patient is in excruciating pain.

Quickly give him painkillers.

Master.

[Huo Residence]

Second Young Mistress, you must be tired.

Get some rest.

No hurry. Come.

Let's have a chat.

Take a seat.

I wouldn't dare to be seated together with you.

There's no one else here.

Let's take a seat and have a chat.

This hair accessory looks nice.

I've never seen it before.

It's...

It's new.

You're not young anymore.

After Yuan Jia is released,

I'll discuss with him...

to find you a good husband.

I don't want to get married.

I'd rather stay here and be with you for the rest of my life.

Do you not want to get married...

or afraid that I'll pair you up with the wrong person?

I...

I'll just cut to the chase.

Among Yuan Jia's disciples,

Ah Fa's family background is the best.

He has a good character too.

He did ask me for your hand in marriage.

Young Master Huang?

He takes a fancy to you.

He gave me his word that he'll be nice to you.

If you're married to him, you'll be a rich lady in Nanyang.

-You'll have a lifetime of wealth... -No!

I told you. I'm not willing to leave!

-So you don't want to get married ever? -No.

That means you like someone else.

Second Young Mistress.

I should just address you as Young Lady.

Young Lady, it's my fault. I shouldn't...

But I do have someone that I like.

Please give me your blessing.

Look at you.

Da You comes from a poor family.

If you get married to him, you'll not have a good life.

Won't you regret it?

Young Lady, how did you know it's Brother Da You?

I had my suspicion, but I wasn't sure.

This time, both of you went to the capital with me...

and spent days and nights together.

I saw how both of you looked at one another.

Brother Da You is a good man.

I like him.

I won't regret it even if it means living in poverty for a lifetime.

Great.

When Yuan Jia returns,

I'll ask him to make the arrangement...

for both of you to tie the knot.

Thank you, Young Lady.

Master.

I'll get you another bowl.

No.

Let me get some rest first.

It looks like the doctor my uncle sent is quite capable.

You seem to get better now.

Your uncle is a man with great connections.

He was even able to invite the doctor here.

But how did you get here?

I...

I'm here to keep you company.

That's not right.

If you hadn't been arrested,

you couldn't possibly be allowed in here.

What really happened?

Tell me the truth.

You deliberately caused trouble in the French Concession, right?

Yes.

That Westerner is too weak.

I broke his tooth with just a punch.

Nonsense.

Master, don't scold me.

I couldn't bear to see you suffer in prison.

I was worried they would plot against you.

That's really thoughtful of you.

If my memory serves me right, you like Xiao Lian.

You even asked for my blessing.

I've spoken to Mrs. Huo like you told me to.

What did she say?

Mrs. Huo said...

she'll ask Xiao Lian on my behalf.

I haven't heard from her yet.

Xiao Lian is one lucky girl.

She's going to become a Young Lady.

How could she possibly disagree with that?

At most, she'll just decline out of shyness.

If I can get back there alive,

I'll help to make the arrangement...

so that both of you can tie the knot sooner.

Thank you for your blessing.

Who's that?

It's you, Gao Qi.

I told you to keep watch.

Why were you daydreaming?

You didn't even know I was behind you.

If it was Ying Si who came,

we would be in trouble.

Gao Qi, I'm sorry.

I got distracted.

It's all right. It's time.

You can go to bed now.

Gao Qi.

I can't sleep anyway. Let me keep you company.

Didn't you drive the carriage for one whole day?

Why would you be so energetic?

I'm just overjoyed.

You're being overjoyed when our master is put behind bars?

Mrs. Huo managed to take the case to the court.

Master will be released soon.

That's why I'm happy.

All right then.

Cover my shift for two more hours.

I'll get a short nap.

I'm really tired having to take turns with Zhen Sheng to keep guard lately.

No problem. Get some rest then.

Gao Qi, what's the matter?

I think someone jumped into the courtyard.

Why didn't I hear anything?

Check out if there are other accomplices.

All right. Be careful.

It's just the two of them. No one else.

-We'll take on them, one-on-one. -All right.

Let's go.

Stop blowing.

That's my room.

Let's go!

Snake Fist?

My master has no grudges with the Snake Shadow Sect.

Who sent you?

Let's go.

Such lousy skills you have! But you're quick to escape!

After them!

Gao Qi!

Let's go.

Gao Qi, are you all right?

I'm fine.

You used flying daggers, huh?

I'm going to teach you a lesson!

Gao Qi, don't go after them.

They want us to go after them and use the hidden weapons on us.

Still, we can't let them get away!

Who's that?

Does using hidden weapons make you seem all great?

Sha Yan?

You didn't leave?

Our master is still in prison.

You guys are just too reckless.

Of course, I have to keep watch on your behalves.

Turns out you're here all along.

Of course.

I know how many times you dozed off every night.

Go to hell!

Brother!

Brother!

Leave it to me!

-Stop! -No!

What happened?

Why did you kill him?

They are here to kill us.

If I don't kill them,

should I let them use the hidden weapons on me instead?

Gao Qi.

Master wants to expel me...

because I killed Xue Xue.

But that was an accident.

-You... -What about me?

They had hidden weapons.

I was afraid they would hurt you.

That's enough.

You have the nerves to argue when you're the one in the wrong.

Didn't you memorize the rules before you joined as a disciple?

I did.

The most important rule of all is to abstain from killing.

If I don't kill him, should I wait to be killed then?

You're just giving excuses!

Especially the second guy.

You could have subdued him. Why did you kill him?

Shouldn't we send him to the government office...

and let Lord Liu investigate who's behind it?

Just wait to be expelled.

Zhen Sheng.

If all of you kept mum about it,

how would master find out about it?

We had those two guys buried, right?

Just keep it a secret!

What are you implying?

You want me to lie to the master?

I can't do it.

Zhen Sheng.

We're brothers.

We shared the bed for over a decade!

Are you going to watch me get expelled by the master?

Besides, I'm in great distress because our master is put in prison!

Xiao Wu is dead.

We haven't avenged him yet!

Nurse yourself back to health.

Otherwise, if our master asked about it...

I wouldn't know how to lie.

Zhen Sheng, so you agreed?

Yan Zi will surely keep it a secret.

How about you, Da You?

Da You, keep a clear conscience!

[How do I treat you all this time?]

[When you first came in,]

[I taught you the first two sets of martial arts.]

Regardless, Gao Qi did it to protect the family.

Besides,

he got injured and was in a moment of desperation.

Da You.

As to how to report it to our master,

you can decide yourself.

I was patrolling.

I didn't see anything.

That's my brother!

It's all in the past now.

No one should bring this up ever again.

[Otherwise, how am I going to explain it to our master?]

Why isn't the doctor here yet?

He should be here soon.

Master, bear with it.

Your physical wounds have almost recovered.

Scabs have formed around the area with boils.

But why do you seem to be in greater pain now?

No.

I'm not in pain.

It feels as though there are many bugs...

in my internal organs.

I'm afraid it's internal injuries.

You need to recuperate.

No.

Taking injection will do just the miracle.

Every time after the injection,

I'll be fine.

Why isn't the doctor here yet?
