Man: All right, stand by, folks. We're gonna try this once.
Man 2: Yeah, that's how I normally -- right.
Please clear the bombs. All the bombs.
We're shooting all the way around, guys.
All the bombs for us.
In 5, 4, 3, 2...
Here we go.
[ Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" plays ]
[ Cheers and applause ]
* Blue jean baby *
* L.A. lady *
* Seamstress for the band *
* Pretty eyed, pirate smile *
* You'll marry a music man *
* Ballerina, you must have seen her *
* She was dancing in the sand *
* Now she's in me, always with me *
* Tiny dancer in my hand *
**
* But, oh, how it feels so real *
* Lying here with no one near *
* Only you, and you can hear me *
* When I say softly, slowly *
* Hold me closer, tiny dancer *
* Count the headlights on the highway *
* Oh, yeah *
* Lay me down in sheets of linen *
* You had a busy day today *
* Hold me closer, tiny dancer *
* Count the headlights on the highway *
* Lay me down in sheets of linen *
* You had a busy day today *
* Busy day *
Whoo!
**
[ Vocalizing ]
[ Cheers and applause ]
**
Man: Come and get it.
Daly: Give it up for our season 27 coaches!
John Legend!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Whoo!
The reigning champion of "The Voice", Michael Bublé.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Our OG coach is back!
The one and only Adam Levine.
[ Cheers and applause ] * Come and get it *
Adam: I'm back in my second home again.
It's beautiful. I feel bad for my fellow coaches
because I'm going to just dominate all season.
Oh, my God, he's got moves like Jagger.
Daly: And our brand new coach, Kelsea Ballerini!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Kelsea: * Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf *
* I wouldn't want to do it with anybody else *
I'm so excited.
Yeehaw!
This is a very iconic show, and now I'm a part of it.
I love John, and I love Michael, and I love Adam,
but they're not Kelsea.
And they're not.
Kelsea Ballerini is an amazing artist.
Wow. Man!
She's done our Comeback Stage.
She filled in for Kelly Clarkson.
She's current and relevant and cool.
I'm on TikTok. Have you guys heard of that?
[ Old man voice ] I don't know about your TikToking.
Everybody's cool, and I feel like there's
a camaraderie already.
Daly: There we are!
I miss Blake. I'm in his mangy, musty chair.
How's it feel?
Well, I immediately started walking over there.
[ Laughter ]
I'm so excited to turn my chair.
Whoo! Can I have a video
of me hitting the button for the first time
so I can send it to my mom after this?
I'm not always going to be this high strung, I swear to God.
Adam: I think when we first started it,
I was too confused to be nervous.
Do you want your seat heater?
Oh, it's on, it's on blast.
Are you feeling good? Are you happy?
Yeah.
You're gonna be so good the first second.
What are they gonna go with, Legend?
I was just thinking. I was like,
"Maybe they'll start with someone amazing."
I'm just going to push it before it starts.
That's -- you should do that.
[ Laughter ]
I used to hate it whenever you'd sing because it was so annoying.
But it's paying off now.
* Say cheese, stepping out, purple Mercedes *
I'm Grace-Miller Moody.
I'm 20 and I'm originally from Florence, South Carolina,
but I go to school in Charleston.
Charleston is beautiful.
Me and my friends will wake up at 6:00 a.m.
and go catch the sunrise.
* Whoa *
Growing up, I would sing throughout the house.
I was told it wasn't really good.
We'd always be, "Grace-Miller", you know,
because we'd be trying to watch TV or something.
She was very loud.
With music my family is my biggest supporters,
and I would not be anywhere near here without them.
My younger brother Shott, at the age of seven,
was diagnosed with leukemia.
He went through chemotherapy for four years.
He did start to get pretty exhausted from it.
I remember him losing his hair.
I remember there was hair everywhere in our house.
Well, it was kind of tough.
Um...
My dad couldn't get out of bed for a few days,
just couldn't even come to the realization
that this was all happening to our family.
It was a long battle, but I'm here now,
and I'm thankful to be seeing her sing today.
[ Camera shutter clicks ]
Adam Levine is back this season.
That's super exciting. We all have seen him live.
After Shott was done with leukemia and everything,
we all took a family trip to Las Vegas,
and we went to a Maroon 5 concert.
It brought us back together after Shott was hospitalized.
So it would be a full circle moment
to see Adam Levine turn his chair.
But Kelsea Ballerini,
it's insane to know that she's going to be on the show.
She has this really cool vibe to her.
She's country, but gives a little bit of pop.
I'm going to be singing "Sunday Morning" by Maroon 5.
It definitely makes me nervous to sing this song
in front of Adam Levine himself.
Let's go. Whoo!
Here we go. All right.
But I just need one coach to believe in me.
All right, boys. Good luck.
I'm praying to the "Voice" gods
that they're amazing.
* Yeah *
* Sunday morning, rain is falling *
Oh, boy!
* Steal some covers, share some skin *
I love this song.
* But things just get so crazy *
* Living life gets hard to do *
* And I would gladly hit the road *
* Get up and go if I knew *
Go!
* That someday it would lead me back to you *
You got a four chair turn, brother.
Yes, sir. That's insane.
* That someday it would lead me back to you *
* That may be all I need *
* In darkness, she is all I see, all I see *
* Come and rest your bones with me *
Whoo!
* Driving slow on Sunday morning *
Yeah. * And I never want to leave *
Yeah!
* Never, never, never, ever, ever, ever *
Wow. Cool.
* Whoa, yeah *
* Driving slow, oh, yeah, yeah *
* Oh, yeah, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah *
* No, oh, oh *
* All I need *
* All I need *
Wow.
Yeah! Let's go!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Aww.
Four chairs.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Oh, yeah! Yes, sir.
What's your name? And where are you from?
My name is Grace-Miller Moody.
I'm 20 years old, and I'm from Florence, South Carolina.
Wow.
Adam notoriously does not turn for his own song.
I was just gonna say. So you have broken the code.
I'm going to say all the things
that Adam is about to say to you.
This is the greatest I've ever heard
one of my songs sung. You are amazing.
That's a good strategy.
Thank you. It's a good strategy.
Preemptive pitching.
Tell me what to say so that I can be your coach
and be with you as you become a worldwide superstar.
Thank you so much.
Obviously, all of us feel like we're at a disadvantage.
[ Laughter ] Yep.
It's been a long time since Adam has been on "The Voice."
Very true.
True. And he's quite likely
very, very rusty.
You'll need someone that's got more recent experience.
And you understand how it's been on the show
for the last 10 seasons,
and not how it was way back in the ancient era.
But we turned around for you
because you kicked that song's ass.
It was so good.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
Come on home to Team Legend.
Wow. All right, all right.
Hi, Grace-Miller. Grace: Hi.
I love you.
[ Laughs ] I love you.
Forget the song. I know it's mine.
I know you have great taste in music.
All of that's fantastic. But...
[ Whoosh ] Blake: Adam's a big baby.
[ Laughter ] Is that Blake's voice?
I had it for when I really needed some backup.
And I got it.
Blake: Adam won't shut up.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Adam, you say a lot of stupid stuff.
[ Laughter ]
I rest my case.
[ Laughter ]
You know what that reminds me of?
Oh, my God.
My long, pedigreed history here on "The Voice."
I can definitely help you get to where you need to go,
because the potential for you is limitless.
There was just something about you,
what you were doing that was so infectious
and so lovable and soulful.
You can absolutely go all the way and win this thing.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
You're amazing.
It feels like it should be illegal to have to go after him.
These three humans, they are three of my favorite artists.
I grew up on their music. For me to turn my chair
and fight against them is terrifying.
Wow.
But you really are worth it to me.
Thank you so much.
As a woman sitting here,
I'm really proud of you for taking this risk.
And you're doing it with such grace and poise,
and you're cool and your voice is great.
I just want you to hear that from me.
Wow. I rest my case.
I thought maybe before you made your choice,
I don't know who you came with today.
I came with my family.
Do you think they want to come up here
with you and help you?
And you can make the choice with them?
Yeah. Come up here.
Ah.
John: Who does Adam need to convince?
Look at this.
Blake: Adam's a crappy coach.
Yeah. Play it again.
Adam's a big baby.
[ Laughter ]
Adam won't shut up.
[ Laughter ]
Grace-Miller, who's going to be the lucky one
you decide to be your coach?
[ Cheering ]
I'm gonna go with Adam.
[ Cheers and applause ]
That's fair, that's fair.
So unpredictable.
Adam: Got my first artist.
I'm back from a long hiatus, so I'm fresh again.
Awesome, dude. Thank you so much.
You're so awesome.
Adam: I usually am the four chair guy.
That's my thing.
That's where I thrive, under that four chair pressure.
There's nothing like it. Your heart beats fast.
You get a little sweat right here.
Thank you. I got you
a Team Adam's sweatshirt. I love it.
Oh, my gosh. Yay!
Yeah.
Adam: Grace-Miller, she has all that rasp
and cool jazzy radness going on.
Nothing rusty here. Finely oiled machine.
Ah!
Whoo!
I'm so happy.
He's back!
Adam is on fire, but I won last season,
and I'm back to win it again.
Kelsea: I know I might be the rookie,
but I'm here to find great music.
I'm here to win, and I'm here to put these boys in their place.
Okay?
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to night one of the blind auditions.
John: All right, guys, a couple of you guys are relatively new.
One of us hasn't been here for a long, long time.
Adam Levine is back. Michael: Welcome back.
Kelsea: Terrifying. Welcome back.
How do you feel, Adam? It's exciting.
And you guys are so cool. And I love you guys.
So we're going to have a really, really great time.
It was my first season during his last season.
So the rumor is I got rid of him.
Michael: How many seasons did you do?
I'm on my 10th now.
Get out of here. Seriously?
She had one day.
I had two days, in my defense.
Kelly was sick, and Kelsea came in and coached for her.
And after doing that, I was like,
"I really one day want to be an actual proper coach."
But I'm the rookie, and I know that.
People are gonna like that. Yeah.
I think it's showtime. Let's go get some artists on our teams.
* I'm about to have a good day * [ Laughs ]
RENZO: My wife and I have two daughters.
Did you throw it?
Aliyah, she's 7.
And Nyla, she's 1.
She's like the cutest baby of all time.
My oldest daughter, Taten, lives in Philly with her mom.
And they're everything to me, they're my pride and joy.
My name is RENZO.
I'm 33 years old, and I'm from Philly.
* In every single way *
Roslyn: RENZO started singing at the age of 4.
I've never heard "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
with vibrato at the end from a 4-year-old.
* Mary had a little lamb *
[ Laughter ]
* Whose fleece was white as snow *
Yeah. That's it.
RENZO: My mom did an amazing job.
I'm forever grateful for her support.
I didn't really have a male role model growing up.
When I was 4 years old, my dad, unfortunately,
was murdered due to gun violence in Philly.
* Tell me how *
* How my life goes on with you gone *
That was really tough on me growing up.
There weren't really many people for me to, like, look up to
and say, "Hey, I want to be like this guy."
I had a lot of love from my mom,
but not having my dad there, it was kind of like 50% of that
I didn't really have.
And so I can't help but sometimes think about, man,
you know, who would I have been if I had a dad?
* Life goes on *
Breaking that generational curse for my daughters
and being a family person is so important to me.
It really inspired me to go harder.
* Life goes on *
In 2015, I moved to L.A. to pursue music,
but my day job is teaching.
I teach science to kids,
and I try to instill other values, as well.
I do the same thing for my kids at home.
Kids: Hi!
You're gonna do so well. You always do.
You're the best, Dad.
The best thing in the whole wide world.
We love you so much. Mwah, mwah, mwah.
You got it. I miss my girls a lot.
Miss them a lot.
For my blind audition,
I'll be singing "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I'm singing a story that is so close to my heart.
You know, it talks about going through life
and learning what it means to be a man.
Announcer: Our next artist is entering now.
RENZO: I've seen a lot of highs and lows.
When you jump, your parachute will not open right away.
But eventually it opens, and it says to me, never give up.
So getting a chair turn, it would mean so much to me.
**
Yeah.
* Mama told me *
Ooh.
* When I was young *
* Said sit beside me, my only son *
* Listen closely to what I say *
* And if you do this, it'll help you *
* Some sunny day *
* And be a simple kind of man *
* And be something you love and understand *
* Baby, be a simple kind of man *
Go, boy!
Come on, Kels. Press the button.
* Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can? *
* Oh, baby be a simple, be a simple man *
* Oh, won't you do this for me, son *
* If you can? *
[ Cheers and applause ]
Whoo!
Wow. Yes.
Oh, you got blocked?!
I got blocked? You got blocked.
[ Audience gasps ]
Who did it? Legend?
[ Laughter ]
I did what I had to do.
Why would you do that?!
I just wanted to welcome you back.
I wanted to do this for old times sake.
What is your name?
My name is RENZO. From Philadelphia, PA.
I've spent a lot of time in Philadelphia.
I went to college there. Most of my band is from Philly.
Oh, wow.
Like, what kind of scene were you in musically?
It was R&B and rock.
The Stevie Wonders and the John Legends.
Oh, yes.
As a teenager, I started listening to the likes of,
you know, Maroon 5 and Nirvana.
Sound bad? He's not bad.
I'm really putting it out there.
I hear the R&B influence,
but you did a song that was unexpected for somebody
that has that background, and I would love to coach you.
Thank you.
I didn't grow up in Philadelphia.
Didn't go to school there. My band doesn't go there.
I did win my fantasy football championship with Jalen Hurts.
There you go. Okay.
I think being a good coach is about listening.
I can help guide you.
I want you to be a global mega star, dude.
Wow. Thank you.
I think if you want to be the disruptive artist
I feel like you want to be,
sometimes you make disruptive choices.
Oh, my God. I like it, Adam.
Like, maybe people are not expecting you to choose Bublé.
Oh. John, you gave me no choice, Legend
This is what you call hating from the sidelines.
You deserved a four chair turn.
I just know that the tools that these guys have --
well, these guys have -- in their toolbox
are going to be better equipped to help you.
You know what? Emmy, Grammy, Academy Award.
Tony. Oh, wow.
He won "The Voice."
Are you not tired of winning, Mr. Legend?
It's reverse psychology.
I'm a humble man from Springfield, Ohio.
I don't know about these awards he's talking about.
Wow. The only award
I want to win with you is win "The Voice."
And then watch you go off
and win a bunch of Grammys on your own.
[ Cheers and applause ] Okay, RENZO.
Who do you choose as your coach?
This is it. Um...
I can't even look.
[ Audience shouting ]
Michael, you're awesome.
You know, it's never good when you say the guy's name first.
Yeah, let's not sugarcoat.
I'm going to go with John Legend.
Hey!
**
That was mine. For sure.
Welcome to the team.
John: I got my first artist,
and I think Team Legend is off to a very nice start.
RENZO! I love RENZO. What a beautiful voice.
He's got a little bit of R&B, a little bit of rock.
Man, I fought hard for him.
Now, who's the mom? Who's the sister? I can't tell.
I can't tell. Oh, my gosh.
[ Laughter ]
Why?!
John feared me. Let's be honest.
And so he felt he needed to block me.
It was a very well played hand.
I'm very sad I couldn't compete for that one.
Blocked, blocked, blocked, blocked, blocked, blocked.
No! I quit! I'm leaving!
This was a big mistake coming back!
Adam, I just want you to remember this.
The first time you blocked me.
Let me see. Who was it?
Back in season 16.
Was it even worth it?
* Surrender to the good time *
Look at that block. Ah!
Adam: I didn't even notice for a while.
That's amazing.
You got it coming.
Daly: As our coaches start building their teams,
start building yours.
Get the "Voice" official app now and play along.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back.
Hello. Happy day one.
I'm new here in every way.
I have presents. You have presents?
Man: You do? Yeah.
I'm from the South. I'm from Nashville.
So I think a welcome gift is a very kind gesture.
We got a cowboy hat.
I'm a little homesick,
so I wanted to bring a little bit of Nashville
to the boys, now known as cowboys.
Looks good on you, Levine. I like it.
Thank you, ma'am. You're so welcome.
What a crazy time, okay?
I'm sitting backstage getting prepared
for my second blind audition.
I'm nervous. I'm excited. I'm ready.
Let's rock and roll.
My name is Iris Herrera. I'm 19 years old.
I'm from Newaygo, Michigan. And I'm back.
* So I'm back to the Velvet *
Last season with Fleetwood Mac, "Gypsy,"
I played it safe by just doing what Stevie Nicks does,
but I didn't, unfortunately, get any chairs,
Whoa!
I wasn't authentic and original to me.
You come back, you sing another song
that isn't Stevie, the chairs are gonna turn.
I would recommend that you film yourself every single day
and watch it back and just hone in on your style,
because you are amazing.
Thank you so much.
After going home,
I've done things to improve my breath work.
Taken the notes on like trying to really find my sound.
See, like, I could have been cleaner there.
I've got a whole new vibe and a whole new song
that's specific to me.
I will be singing "You Are My Sunshine."
The challenge is that a lot of people
have emotional connections to this song, including my family.
Melissa: The song my mom sang to us.
I was a single mom, and I was working
and my sister Rachel stayed home.
Um, and she was able to watch Iris for me,
which is a blessing, right?
Um, so my sister would sing the song to her,
and Iris has those memories.
Vividly. Like, it just brings me to a place of,
like, comfort and safety, and like, it's a powerful song.
It's an emotional song.
Gosh.
So I had an idea.
Hi, Iris. We are so proud of you.
This is our song.
And now it gets to be the song that leads you to your dreams.
Shine bright, my beautiful sunshine. I love you so much.
Oh, my.
Iris: The song is kind of just a blank canvas.
I've slowed it down.
I've made it a little more smoky, a little twang.
Announcer: Our next artist is entering now.
Iris: I have three coaches that have never heard me,
so I'm excited to go out there and give this another shot.
I hope that I can do it justice,
to show the coaches I can be authentic.
Mm, are you feeling lucky?
I'm feeling good.
**
* You are my sunshine *
Wow.
* My only sunshine *
* You make me happy *
Whoo!
* When skies are gray *
Don't even think about it.
There you go! You got two!
* You'll never know, dear *
* How much I love you *
Wow.
* Please don't take *
That's three. Oh, my gosh.
Congratulations.
* My sunshine away *
**
* You'll never know, dear *
Ow!
* Just how much I love you *
* Oh, please don't take *
* My sunshine away *
Come on, Iris.
She's so different than the last time.
Get it, girl! Oh! She's worked so hard.
* Please don't take *
Wow.
* My sunshine *
* Away *
[ Cheers and applause ]
Unreal.
Yeah!
Second time's a charm.
Second time's a charm.
You're so cool!
What's wrong with you?
So much is wrong with me.
Hi. What's your name?
My name is Iris Herrera.
I love your voice.
But then everybody turned, and I'm like, okay,
Kelsea, all day long, it seems like.
John: Slow down, Adam.
You don't know the connection that Iris
and I are going to have.
Hey!
That's fair. You do not know.
You're obviously belong here. And I'm really happy for you.
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Hi, Iris. I'm Kelsea. Hi, Kelsea.
Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
You're so beautiful. You'reso beautiful.
Oh, here we go. No, you're so beautiful.
Michael, you're so beautiful.
Just girls bonding. Having girl time.
Oh, my God.
With your voice, it made me want to know you.
That's what people are looking for in artist.
It's like, why do I feel so connected to the way
that she's singing that?
And you have that.
I felt like you kind of reaching up
and slowly finding those notes was such a stylistic choice.
And to me, it came across so emotive.
Yeah. You're very infectious,
and you're very soulful. Thank you.
And I would be really, really honored to work with you
and support you in any way I can.
Thank you.
So, why didn't you tell people what your story is?
So I was actually here for season 26.
Oh, my. Oh.
But I chose a really safe song.
I had nothing but great, wonderful feedback.
And I went home, and I worked really hard.
For me, this is the coolest thing ever.
Look at what you did. I'm so happy.
What I did learn from the first season
was what the coaching means.
And that joy of getting to hang and to grow with them,
that's it. I mean, that's my pitch.
I just would love to have you. Thank you. Thank you so much.
Honestly, I felt like that was a four chair turn performance.
I'm not going to keep harping on Adam not turning for you,
but what I really want to impress on you is
how convincing that performance was.
And I turned for you first.
Thank you!
I loved how in your own world you were.
It's very appealing for the audience member to see someone
that's so into the music.
So I would love to have you on my team, Iris.
Oh, God, this is hard.
The thing I'm looking for the most are artists
that don't want to be boxed in.
Women in music right now are killing.
Yes. I'm lucky enough
to be in it right now with these women,
and I'm learning a lot, and I would love
to just walk alongside you, too, in this class, I really would.
Adam: All right. It's time.
Iris, who do you pick as your coach?
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Um...
Come on home.
I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the women in my life.
I'm going to have to be Team Kelsea.
I feel like I just won the entire Super Bowl.
I have my first artist.
It feels so good. Now I'm ready. I have my sea legs.
Now I'm ready to make everyone jealous.
I fought very hard for Iris.
She has warmth to her voice, but also this grit.
That's awesome. Can't beat that.
When you take the advice that was given
and then you come back with a vengeance,
that's what it takes to be in music.
I lucked out.
Iris: I thought long and hard
about what my team gift would be.
What would represent Nashville, where I come from.
So I got some Tecovas. I'm new here.
I have to show that being on Team Kelsea
is worth a pair of genuine leather boots.
I will be destroyed if I don't get my own Bell--
I got you a hat.
I want boots, too.
Okay. Alright, cowboy.
I do this thing. I look so good.
I wear these, like, shorts.
Black socks.
With boots?
Mm-hmm.
Howdy, partner.
[ Cheers and applause ]
I don't want to brag, but I feel pretty good about that.
As you should.
Kelsea likes to seem like a very sweet, innocent young lady.
But I'm coming to recognize she's someone to contend with.
You took that one down. I feel so excited.
Kelsea a rookie? My ass.
She's great, and she knows exactly what she's doing.
* I can climb higher * All right.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to the "Voice" premiere.
Announcer: One minute, one minute.
I would want a chair like this at home.
You don't have one? When people came to a meeting,
it would just turn, and I would be petting a cat or something.
Perfect. Definitely a cat.
CeeLo style.
[ Laughter ]
Announcer: All right, places. Here we go.
What's up? Dude!
Well, this is weird. I know, it's crazy.
How are you? Yeah. Of course.
Good to see you.
I'm more nervous now.
Announcer: Our next artist is entering now.
Jadyn: My dad definitely has left some big shoes to fill.
I'm excited to make him proud
and try my best to get anywhere close to
where he got in this competition.
* Can't count the years on one hand *
* That we've been together *
* I need the other one to hold you *
* Make you feel, make you feel better *
* 'Cause after all this time *
A cute hold.
* I'm still into you *
Yes.
* I should be over all the butterflies *
* But I'm into you *
* And, baby, even on our worst nights *
* I'm into you *
Let's go!
There you go! Yeah!
* Some things just make sense to me *
* Yeah, after all this time *
Just don't turn. Leave me alone.
* I'm into you *
* Baby *
Come on, Adam!
* I'm not into you *
* I should be over all the butterflies *
* But I'm into you *
Let's go!
* And, baby, even on our worst nights *
* I'm into you *
* Ever wonder how we got this far *
* 'Cause I don't really need to wonder at all *
* And after all this time, I'm still into you *
* I'm still into you, I'm still into you *
[ Cheers and applause ]
Jadyn!
John: Oh, my God! Welcome to "The Voice."
What is your name, and where are you from?
My name is Jadyn Cree, and I am from Lincoln, Nebraska.
That was such a cool vocal.
I mean, your voice stands out and it pierces...
Thank you. ...through in a way
that makes it grab people's attention.
Congratulations, and welcome to the show.
There was something about your voice
that reminded me of a '90s pop voice that I love so much.
So many great female singers in that time.
I feel like I missed out, because I think you're going to
really go far on this show because there's nobody like you.
I need to interrupt for one second
because she looks very familiar to me.
Have you auditioned before on the show?
No, but my father got third place on season 25,
and he is standing over there. Oh, my God!
That's crazy.
Yeah. He was on Team Legend!
Come on, Bryan.
Jadyn: It's just a blessing having my dad on, like,
a couple seasons ago.
Bryan Olesen. Let's go!
There's my daughter over there.
Bring her out.
I got to sing a little something, which was insane.
* Just go ahead, let your hair down *
I was so nervous. I was like,
"I can't look at these people in the eye right now."
To be on this side of it and watch Jadyn blossom,
it's surreal.
You know, she's always been the one in the basement dancing
and singing, and in the shower.
So music's been a part of her life for a long, long time.
Jadyn: I am in an '80s cover band.
We're called am AM/FM.
I have done a show for 10 people,
and I have done a show for like 3,000.
I got to sing with my dad at his hometown celebration
and it was a lot of fun.
He's one of my biggest inspirations.
I did it. Oh, baby.
My little heart. Oh.
Bryan Olesen, we went all the way to
third place on the show, which was amazing.
Now I'm feeling a little FOMO right now.
Me too. Me too. You guys are so cool.
And your dad has a mohawk, which is, like, so speaking to me.
I suck.
[ Laughter ]
They don't call him Late to the Party Levine for nothing.
Never heard that one before.
Your voice is really pure.
I want to hear you sing stuff like
"Kiss Me", Sixpence None the Richer
or, like, "Jar of Hearts", Christina Perri.
Good job, Coach. Pre-coaching.
I know more than just country.
What's your end goal? What's your dream?
To be on a stage.
I am in an '80s cover band back home.
Cool. I get 'em up dancing, and so...
You're incredible. Adam: You're being so awesome.
It's really bumming me out.
Afterthought Adam.
John: Adam has daughters, too, and you can tell he's,
like, envisioning the possible future.
Oh, my God. How did you know?
[ Laughter ]
I imagine, Bryan, this is probably the greatest
moment of your life so far.
It's pretty great.
And you know how I know that, dude?
Because I got two beautiful girls.
And every morning, we wake up and we dance to Billie Eilish
and we dance to Taylor Swift.
And one of them is not as good as a dancer
because she's just one and a half.
[ Laughter ]
But I know right now what you're feeling,
and I imagine you could jump out of your skin
with happiness right now.
And you should be, because, Jadyn, I think you're a star.
You have so much light pouring out of you.
I want to sit one day when you get your record deal,
with my two baby girls,
and I want to dance my face off and go,
"Your poppy was part of that."
That's my pitch. I'm done. I'm not going to pitch anymore.
Thank you so much.
I just have a dog. I can't even...
Bryan made me cry last season.
Now I'm watching him cry, and I'm crying again.
Jadyn, I'll let you guys talk for a second,
and then I'll ask you the question.
Everybody make noise so that we don't...
You did so good. What do you want to do?
I trust whatever your gut is.
This is really cool. I wish I had turned around.
What are you gonna do? I think I...
I'm thinking about my girls, you know?
You're making me cry. Stop it, Michael.
Who do you pick as your coach?
Bublé!
I'm gonna have to go with Michael.
[ Cheers and applause ]
No!
Yes!
I got my first artist, and it feels so good, man.
It feels great.
Thank you. Yes.
It's my second season,
and the thing I learned about last season
is you never know who is going to ascend.
And I believe Jadyn has the greatest potential
of truly being a star.
What a special moment.
Jadyn -- I'm sad that she's not on my team,
but I am excited to watch her.
I listen to all kinds of music,
and so I really want my team to represent that.
She like dresses like my wife, and he has a mohawk.
You know what I mean? I'm like, that's my people.
The chemistry is important.
It's better than I could have wished for.
And it's day one, so it's only gonna get better.
That's adorable, man.
We've naturally kind of fallen into, like,
I feel like little sister.
I'm texting with your wife about cooking together.
John: I heard, I heard.
They don't want me to win,
but they're still being nice to me.
You're texting your boyfriend? Ooh!
Guys. Really?
She said mind your business.
And I'm wondering if that shoe is gonna drop.
But I'm prepared, and I'm ready.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions
at Universal Studios Hollywood.
John: Yeah, man, it's good to have you back.
It's good to be back.
Yeah. We missed you, man. Oh, my bad.
That's my bad. This is my old chair.
Yeah. I understand, man.
It's my chair now.
I know, I know. Won a lot of victories in this chair.
Yeah. Old memories.
Memories? Yeah, man.
But sometimes we got to move on.
I know.
You got a great chair over there.
I know. All right.
Uh, this is gonna sound weird,
but do you think I could have a minute with her?
Just one last, uh... One last...
I know it's weird, but -- You know what? Forget it.
I'm just going to go to my chair.
Okay.
**
[ Traffic noises ]
[ Jackhammer thudding ]
[ Horns honking ]
* Twinkle, twinkle, little *
Zack: The New York music scene is tough.
* How I wonder *
So I do this class called Baby Bop,
and it's essentially a Mommy and Me music class
where I'm kind of connected to, like,
when I was a child and my exposure to music
at such a young age.
I just love doing it.
Good job.
All right, guys, we'll see you next week.
I'm Zack Zaro, I'm 28,
and I'm from Long Island, New York.
I went to school for musical theater in New York City.
Then after college,
I had a once in a lifetime opportunity
to do the Broadway national tour for "Bandstand"
as the lead character, Donny Novitski.
I started going out more, doing gigs of my own music.
In New York City, if you want to, like, pay
your rent, you got to hustle, but, like, there's nothing else
I want to do.
For the blind auditions,
I think the coaches are going to be shocked
when they hear the electric guitar,
and they realize what song this is.
I think it really represents who I am,
taking a song and turning it on its head.
I hope that the coaches see that I want to be an original artist,
and if I just get one chair turn, like,
oh, man, it would just change my life.
Breathe. I am.
**
* Oh, baby, baby, how was I supposed to know *
Britney? You're gonna play Britney?
Yeah!
* That something wasn't right here? *
* Oh, baby, baby *
* I shouldn't have let you go *
She wants to press. Press.
Yeah, she does. Do it, do it. Come on, girl!
* And now you're out of sight *
* Show me how you want it to be *
* Tell me, baby *
* 'Cause I need to know now *
Like a rock version of Britney.
* Oh, because my loneliness *
* Is killing me, and I, I must confess *
* I still believe *
* When I'm not with you, I lose my mind *
* Give me a sign *
Come on, let's go!
Come on!
* Hit me, baby, one more time *
[ Cheers and applause ]
Aw! God, that was so close.
That was so, so fun.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Hey!
What is your name?
Zack Zaro.
And I'm from Long Island, New York.
That was so cool.
Just to know that that was your brain going like,
I want to be able to make something creative.
I was so close.
I'm new here, and so I hope that I'm not going to regret that.
But I do think you're amazingly talented.
Thank you so much, Kelsea.
Adam: Your passion was there.
It just boiled down to just some of the technical stuff
that bogged me down.
But cool song to do and cover that way, I appreciate it.
Thanks, man. Thank you.
Yeah. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Zack. Thank you.
Thank you guys so much.
Aw.
Oh, Zack, I almost pushed my button on.
And I'm still having a little bit of a minor panic.
Ah! Those are brutal,
for both sides.
I mean, it's an awful feeling.
We as coaches are still getting told no all the time.
[ Chuckles ] And so it's a relatable feeling.
I hate being a part of that moment for someone.
I also know how valuable it can be.
I still have my Coach Replay
and I'm holding it very close to the chest,
up my sleeve, my ace up my sleeve.
I just feel like I'm a gut girl and I'll know.
I'll know when it's time.
Sometimes slippy, like, covers like that are so good.
Yeah. And sometimes they can be
better than the original, too. I agree.
'Cause you hear the lyrics different.
Yeah.
Darius J: Oh, my God. So cool.
It's been 26 seasons so far.
And we got the 26th winner right here.
27, baby. After 26 is 27. Yes!
Yes, 27. [ Laughter ]
I'm Darius J, I'm 35 years old,
and I'm from Pahokee, Florida.
I would describe his style as different.
[ Laughter ] Um...
...a lot of times I see what he's wearing,
and I'm like, "Boo, go take that off."
[ Laughter ]
Darius J: Growing up in school, I did not have a lot of friends.
I was 13 when I came out.
I was bullied a lot for being different.
But I did notice that the bullying subsided
anytime I was singing, so singing became, you know,
not just something I loved to do,
but an escape from horrible kids.
That's why I'm always laughing
and I'm always trying to make people laugh --
because people went out of their way to make me cry.
* I feel so alone *
* Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh *
Darius J: I didn't know how to deal with those emotions
to the point where I started acting out.
So my mom sent me to live with her brother in New Jersey
to kind of reel me back in.
We felt the best thing for him was to get away.
It did help.
Moving to new Jersey was the best thing
that ever happened to me.
It showed me that maybe it's not that you don't fit in.
Maybe you just don't fit in where you are.
There are people just like me in different places.
You just have to find them.
Um...
[ Laughs ] I don't want to cry.
Aw, Mommy, don't.
[ Breathes deeply ]
**
[ Voice breaking ] We struggled a lot.
We were poor,
but they didn't even know they were poor
because I did the best I could.
**
And we made it.
We made it.
And that's why this is...
**
That's why this is so exciting for us,
you know, to come from where we come from,
you know, growing up on Section 8,
growing up in the projects.
And to see him strive --
He's such a hard worker.
Words can't even explain how proud I am of my son.
He deserves this because he's worked so hard to get here.
Man: Our next artist is entering now.
Darius J: The cool thing about the blinds
is it takes away everything
that kind of I was bullied for, you know,
the way I dress, the way I look.
And the only thing that you have to focus on
is the thing that, personally, I feel like I'm best at --
my voice.
**
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back.
**
Yee! Ha, ha, ha!
* I'm the kind of brother *
* Who's been doing it my way *
* Getting my way for years *
* In my career *
* And every lover *
* In and out my life, I hit, love, and left in tears *
* Without a care *
There you go! * Until I met this girl *
* Who turned the tables around *
Whoo, cool. * She caught me by surprise *
* And I never thought *
* I'd be the one breaking down *
* I can't figure it out *
* I'm so caught up *
* Got me feeling it *
* Caught up *
* I don't know what it is *
* But it seems she's got me twisted *
* And I'm so *
* Really feeling it *
* I'm losing control *
* This girl's got a hold on me * [ Cheers and applause ]
Whoo!
Darius J: * And I think I like it, baby * That's awesome.
**
* This girl's got a hold *
* I'm so, so *
* I'm so *
* I don't know what it is *
I'm so proud of you! * But it seems she's got me twisted *
* And I'm caught up *
* Really feeling it *
* I'm losing control *
* This girl's got a hold on me * Oh, I love it. I love it.
Whoo!
* Let me go, baby *
* Whoa, oh, oh *
Encore! We want more! [ Cheers and applause ]
I want more! Oh, man.
**
I want another one.
I don't even know where I am.
What's your name? Where are you from?
And where have you been all my life?
[ Laughter ]
Well said.
So, my name is Darius J.
I'm from Pahokee, Florida.
Thank God for you.
The good Lord has filled you with so much light
and love and charisma.
Honestly, Darius, I can't help make you a better singer.
You arethe better singer.
Here's what I can do.
I can enjoy every damn second
of the ride with you
as you take off with me and win "The Voice."
You are a complete joy.
You rock, dude. Thank you.
I actually was touring with Kanye
while we opened for Usher on that "Confessions" tour,
where that was the opening song of the show.
Yeah. And for you to flip it
in the way that you did
was so cool and unexpected.
When you did that [imitates laugh] at the beginning.
That's my fancy laugh. [ Laughter ]
I didn't get to watch you, but I had a feeling
whatever you was doing, it was spicy.
And I'm so excited for you. Welcome to the show.
[ Applause ]
One of my close, close friends, CeeLo Green,
would be very jealous of that outfit you're wearing.
[ Laughter ] There's a really amazing
electricity to what he does,
and I felt that from you. I really, really did.
The way you perform --
Clearly, you're fearless because you get up there
with so much ease and confidence.
Mm-hmm. This is not my first rodeo.
When it comes to "The Voice," I've honestly done it all.
I just feel like it's gonna be a very magical ride.
Please pick me as your coach.
Oh, man. [ Laughs ] [ Applause ]
You are the best entertainer that I have seen...
I agree. ...on this stage.
Thank you. Hearing your voice is one thing
and it is electric and it's magnetic.
Seeing you use your voice
is a whole different level.
Like, you are such an artist.
And my gut is telling me that I can do this with you.
I would be so deeply honored.
And I talk with my hands when I'm really passionate.
I love it. I love it. I would be so deeply
jazz hands honored to be your coach.
Ah! This right now feels like
we're, like, in a game of, like, Quidditch.
Yes. Wow. Okay?
Ah, Quidditch. And you --
It's like a -- It's like a --
Is this a "Potter" reference?
It's -- Yeah, it is. We're playing Quidditch.
We're so cool. And you're --
Instead of golden, you're like --
you're like the silver, sparkly
ball of energy with wings that we're all chasing.
Obviously, I'm Gryffindor.
Michael: Hey, Darius.
Darius, no joke.
I hate losing even more than I love winning.
There's a freshness in a dude coming in here
who's so hungry that he will do whatever it takes.
I'm telling you. Alright.
Let's go!
Whoo! Darius!
I think Darius wants to be on my team.
John: Darius...
who do you pick as your coach?
[ Indistinct shouting ]
I love you, Darius!
Come on! Let's make it. Let's win this thing.
Come on! Let's win this thing.
Jazz hands.
They're working hard for you, Darius.
I gotta go with my gut. Oh, man!
I'm gonna go with Team Adam.
Yes!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Oh! Let's go!
Yeah, that hurt.
Adam: My guy Darius.
The competition needs people like Darius.
We don't have enough sparkles. You know?
We don't have enough human disco balls.
We need -- We need some fun.
This works with you. I like it. Yeah, I love it.
Coming back has just been really nostalgic.
It has not changed.
It's shocking, actually, how similar
it feels to what it was.
I'm having a really good time.
I love to win "The Voice." It's fun.
I've done it before, and I'd like to do it again.
Ahhhh!
Daly: Oh, don't hurt him! We need him!
You did it! You did it!
Daly: That was incredible.
Did you have a tough time making a decision?
Why did you pick Adam?
I've been watching this show for a long time.
I know Adam, I know he's a winner,
and I'm ready to win.
Welcome to "The Voice," man. Thank you.
That was too good.
I'm jealous. John: Good stuff.
Adam: I feel good. So great.
My pitching is getting more and more aggressive.
I like it. Bring it. Same.
Daly: Still to come...
* We played the part five nights *
Yeah! * But we were never there on the weekends, baby *
I'm gonna do something crazy.
What?! John: It's never been used in this way.
It's very dirty and underhanded. It's not!
Daly: And later...
* Forgive my northern attitude *
John: I may be at a disadvantage.
Sometimes I have to bring in reinforcements.
Kelsea: Hey! Whoa!
John: Ohhhhh!
Oh, my goodness!
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back.
**
[ Whistles ]
Hmm.
What's this?
"R."
Reba: Dear Kelsea,
I heard you would be the new coach this season
and I'm just so excited for you.
It's up to you to keep country alive on the show
and I know you'll do a terrific job.
Now go out there and show those boys who's the boss.
P.S. I left you a little good luck charm in case you need it.
Love, Reba. [ Exhales sharply ]
[ Ting! ]
**
I feel so...
fancy.
Being Team Kelsea,
the first Team Kelsea ever on this wall,
that'd be great.
Angie: [ Speaking Spanish ]
I started singing country music when I was 16 years old.
It was after a Lady A concert.
I felt it in my core.
A little over a year and a half ago,
I decided to pick up all my things and move to Nashville
to chase my dream.
I do music full time.
Today we're at Jason Aldean's roof.
It'll be a full band.
I've had the privilege of opening up
for lots of legends, like Tanya Tucker, Wynonna.
And I'm really thankful, but this show could change my life.
I'm a first-generation American,
born of two Cuban parents.
My dad came from Cuba in a raft back in the '90s.
We stayed three days and two nights in the raft.
And the water --
[ Voice breaking ] And the waters go...
[ Sniffles ]
We look for the freedom, and we're here.
Thanks to my parents, I'm able to chase my dream.
She worked hard for years to try to do this.
See what happens.
**
This is... You should know.
I know who that is. Yeah. It's Kelsea. It's Kelsea Ballerini.
Angie: I will be singing "Penthouse" by Kelsea Ballerini.
I am terrified of singing a Kelsea Ballerini song
in front of Kelsea Ballerini.
I would love a career like Kelsea's.
She writes from the point in her life that she's at,
but it really does transcend
so many different generations of people.
Her songs have gotten me through so much.
If someone blocks Kelsea Ballerini,
I might throw hands.
Man: Our next artist is entering now.
Angie: My parents came to this country with nothing
in hopes of creating this better life.
And I want to make them proud and say, "Look, I did it."
Alright, I have a good feeling. I do.
Let's go.
**
* Mm, mm, mm, mm * This is my song.
* We moved to a place with a view * This is you?
* Off of Eighth Avenue *
* After we said "I do" *
* And we watched cars of bachelorettes *
* 2:00 a.m. cigarettes * Come on, Kelsea.
* And traffic head downtown * She's like, "That's my song."
* And the interstate was so loud *
Oh. * There was a lot it had to drown out *
* We played the part five nights *
* But we were never there on the weekends, baby * Obviously I'm gonna turn.
[ Cheers and applause ] * We got along real nice *
* But when I left town, did you hate me? *
* One day the curtain started coming down *
She's freaked out because she turned around. * You changed the second we were moving out *
* I guess wrong can look alright *
* When you're playing home in a penthouse *
* Baby *
* Whoa, oh, oh, ohh *
* 'Cause we were playing home in a penthouse *
* Baby *
[ Cheers and applause ]
**
Thank you for singing my song.
Okay.
Oh, I love it.
Can I go first?
[ Laughs ] Yes, you go. You talk. What's your name?
My name is Angie Rey, I am 25,
and I'm from Seminole, Florida,
but I live in Nashville, Tennessee.
Yeah, you do.
I literally said before you came out,
I was like, "I have a good feeling about this." You did. Yep.
And then you played her song.
That is so scary. I was terrified, so...
That's scary for me.
'Cause you're hitting notes that I don't hit in that song,
let me tell you. Oh, my gosh.
Thank you so much
for singing that song.
I could tell you were nervous.
It's a nerve-wracking industry to get into,
but when you beat it, it's fine.
You were nervous, but then Kelsea
turned around, and you fully lost it
'cause you were so excited.
And it was just meant to be.
And I loved watching it.
I love John, and I love Michael,
and I love Adam, but they're not Kelsea.
And that's how I -- Like, you know what I mean?
[ Cheers and applause ] And they're not.
Wow.
Man! Do you write songs?
I do, yeah. I'm a songwriter. Okay.
I can tell because of the way
that you sang certain phrases in that song,
and even how I recorded it
is different than how I sing it live
because it's such an emotional story.
I mean, you're talking about all this.
Can you just sing it with her?
Oh, my God!
Ohhh, ahh!
[ "Penthouse" plays ]
**
Yeah!
This is good. This is good.
There we go. Oh, my God.
Yes.
* We moved to a place with a view *
* Off of Eighth Avenue after we said "I do" *
* We watched cars of bachelorettes *
* 2:00 a.m. cigarettes *
* And traffic headed downtown *
* And the interstate was so loud *
* There was a lot it had to drown out *
* We played the part five nights *
* But we were never there on the weekends, baby *
Thank you, Michael Bublé, for that great idea. * One day, the curtain started coming down *
* He changed *
* The second we were moving out *
* I guess wrong can look alright *
* When you're playing home in a penthouse *
* Baby *
Yeah.
* 'Cause we were playing home in a penthouse *
* Baby *
Give it up! Let's go!
[ Cheers and applause ]
You have no idea how much this means to me.
That was great.
I have boots for you. Wait. Whoo!
Kelsea: I'm so excited to work with Angie.
I think she has a lot of lot of potential.
I want to work with her on honing in.
Okay, you want to be a country artist.
What does that mean?
That's gonna be our journey.
I wanted her so bad.
I was like, "If she doesn't turn, I think I'm gonna cry."
Michael: I sing your song in my shows.
I cover your song, and I love your stuff. Which one?
"This Love." You know what I'm talking about,
with the strings and the --
* This love has taken its toll *
No, I'm kidding.
[ Laughter ]
Adam: I never know when to believe you, man.
Kelsea: I know.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to night one of the blind auditions.

Dang. Michael: Oh, yeah.
Richard Marx. Richard.
Carlos: * Oceans apart *
* Day after day *
* And I slowly go insane *
* If I see you next to never *
Yeah, man, he's got a good voice.
* Then how can we say forever? *
* Wherever you go *
* Whatever you do *
* I will be right here waiting for you *
* Whatever it takes *
* Or how my heart breaks *
* I will be right here waiting for you *
* But in the end, if I'm with you *
* I'll take the chaaaaance *
* Wherever you are * Hey!
* Whatever you do *
* I will be right here waiting for you *
* Whatever it takes *
* Or how my heart breaks *
* I will be right here *
* Waiting for youuuu * Beautiful.
* Waiting for you *
[ Cheers and applause ]
Got two chairs. Yeah.
**
What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Carlos Santiago.
I'm originally from Caguas, Puerto Rico.
Oh, my goodness!
I know somebody who might speak some Spanish to you.
No hablo español.
What I loved about your performance was your vibrato
and that richness of your higher register.
And I especially loved the back half of the performance.
I feel like there's an intuitive place that I expect you will go.
What intuitive place would that be?
I just know who turned for him first.
Yeah.
This is one of those moments, right?
Maybe one of the biggest moments of your life.
When I'm your coach, it's a full-time job for me.
It really is. It's -- It's a friendship.
But my job is to get the best out of you, man.
Adam is a massive star.
You know, you see that gorgeous face of his?
[ Chuckles ] You're also very popular, Michael.
I don't know if anyone's told you. I do okay.
A legend in my own mind.
[ Laughter ]
I really hope for both of us
that the decision you make
is the right one for your life and for your career.
[ Laughs ] Kelsea: No pressure.
Oh, my God. No pressure.
[ Laughs ]
Really cool voice.
Have you been singing your whole life?
Tell me everything.
I started singing when I was 3,
and now I'm actually a voice instructor
at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. I went to Lipscomb!
Yes. Go, Bison! John: Oh, cool.
But you didn't push your button, so who cares?
[ Laughter ]
What did you study at Lipscomb?
I dropped out.
[ Laughter ]
You're amazing. Go, Bison.
And Adam Levine, everybody.
Thank you, thank you.
That song brings me
to such a specific place in my mind.
It's like the third grade dance, and it's like...
Y'all had third grade dances here? Yeah, like -- But, like no --
Nobody was dancing. Michael: I know what you're talking about.
They were just doing this. You're right. It's a sidestep thing, yes.
You're like scared and sweaty
and like, "Why am I dancing with a girl?" What a mature culture.
"It's weird."
Not third grade. Probably like fifth grade.
Okay. My bad.
I just want someone that can deliver
a powerful vocal.
And you're the one. So, let's go.
Let's stop messing around. Who are we kidding, really?
[ Laughter, applause ]
Michael did give a spirited pitch.
He made it clear that there was two paths in the road.
One, and your life will work out,
and the other one, it'll go to hell.
Kelsea, can you ask the question? Kelsea: Yes.
Who do you pick as your coach, my friend?
[ Indistinct shouting ] [ Laughs ]
**
Michael.
I am going to pick...
**
...Michael.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Team Bublé!
Man, I am having a great day.
Carlos is one of those guys who has a really interesting voice.
I think it's almost musical theater,
mix of operatic, a little bit of Josh Groban.
We gave it the old college try, my friend.
Hey, man, you know, I tried my best.
It's a win on Adam, and I'll take as many as I can.
John: I have one note on your gift.
Putting it over their head,
it might be dangerous for some hairdos.
Yeah, I -- I -- I agree.
Daly: Play along in the "Voice" official app now
and enter for a chance to win $10,000 cash prize,
thanks to the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Dan: I feel like I'm in "The Wizard of Oz,"
but, wow, I just don't want to leave.
Like, my heels are not clacking.
To work with any of these coaches
would be a dream come true.
I love Michael Bublé,
his tone, the classic style.
The part that I can never understand is how,
when some of the biggest icons in the industry turn around,
people don't fall to the floor or lose it.
That's insane.
My name is Dan Kiernan,
I'm 33, and I'm from New York City.
I grew up on Long Island.
My dad was a tugboat captain.
He was like a modern-day pirate.
He would work hard and then come home
and just spoil me and my brother to no end.
We would, like, play dress-up, and I wanted to be Catwoman,
which is, you know, iconic.
So he went out and got me, like, the full outfit.
He knew I was different and needed a little extra love
and was just so willing to be that person.
I started in the band in third or fourth grade.
There was a performance.
They introduced the song and I walked to the mic.
Backup dancers come out.
And we did this full-on, like, production number.
I was thinking that I didn't know who that was.
I thought he was-lip syncing and it was somebody else.
It was really amazing.
* Whoo-hoo *
Dan: Right now, I'm a wedding singer.
I gig all around New York with my band.
It's been a great way to kind of hone my voice
and prepare for something of this caliber.
Fake it till you make it.
Who would have thought? Oh, no.
Believe it until you achieve it.
And I know that Daddy would be so proud of you.
Go get 'em. Every chair is gonna turn.
My dad died just about five years ago.
My mom called me crying, hysterical,
like, couldn't get words out.
He went in for the scan,
but he was so sick that lying down flat that long
caused him to go into cardiac arrest.
By the time I got to the hospital,
my mom just said, "He's -- He's gone."
Grief is a chronic illness.
The second you get it,
it's just -- you have it forever.
The best moments of your life are bittersweet.
I struggled to get back to music.
That was the first thing I thought
when I walked in this room, that, like...
**
[ Exhales sharply ]
**
Because my dad believed in me so much,
I'm still out here believing in my big dream.
Man: Our next artist is entering now.
Dan: Before I'd go on, my dad would do this thing
where he'd be like, "Give me a hug,"
and would, like, squeeze me.
Good luck, guys. Thank you.
Now he has the best seat in the house.
**
I love this song so much.
* Had to have high, high hopes for a living *
* Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing *
* Didn't have a dime, but I always had this vision *
There you go! He got Michael! * Always had high, high hopes *
[ Cheers and applause ]
* Mama said *
* "Fulfill the prophecy *
* Be something greater *
* Go make a legacy *
* Manifest destiny *
* Back in the day, we wanted everything *
* Wanted everything" *
Mama said, "Burn your biography *
* Rewrite your history *
* Light up your wildest dreams *
* Museum victories every day *
* We wanted everything *
* Wanted everything" *
* Mama said "Don't give up *
* It's a little complicated *
* All tied up *
* No more love *
* And I'd hate to see you waiting" *
* They say it's all been done *
* They haven't seen the best of me-eh-eh-eh *
* So I got one more run *
* It's gonna be a sight to see-eh-eh-eh * Come on, Adam!
* Had to have high, high hopes for a living *
* Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing *
* Didn't have a dime, but I always had this vision *
* Always had high, high hopes * * Always had high, high *
* High hooooopes *
Alright, man.
* Ohh *
* I always had this vision *
Whoo! * Always had high, high hopes *
Ahh!
[ Cheers and applause ]
**
Really cool.
Oh, no! Whoo!
Whoo! Let's go!
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Dan Kiernan.
I'm 33, and I'm from New York City.
That was so exciting and fun.
The higher parts of the song,
you sounded so, like, powerful and energetic.
And I know that song is nearly impossible to sing.
I mean... Yeah. Adam: Seriously.
He's like climbing Everest.
It's go big or go home in this moment, right?
Exactly. You went big.
And there were moments when it didn't
always come together. Right.
But I would love to coach you.
Thank you so much.
That is a note-y song, and I know
because I sing it with my kids in the car
going to school
and I suck at it.
But I loved your going for it.
And more than that, how much fun is it to watch you?
I think you're a beaut,
and I'd love to have you on my team, sir.
"A beaut!"
"A beaut!" "A beaut."
Dan, tell me everything.
I'm really interested in songwriting.
I have so much to say and represent for, for my community.
You're amazing, ad you have such an aura about you.
I didn't turn my chair. I'm not quite sure why.
It's okay. We can still be friends.
Please. Can we?
[ Stammers ] Yes.
[ Laughter ]
I'm gonna do something.
What are you gonna do?
I'm gonna do something crazy.
There's this thing. I only get one.
Oh, my God. It's called the Replay.
And I'm gonna try to challenge them.
You're gonna use -- This is my first season.
And it's never been used in this way.
I made a mistake.
I think you are fantastic.
Thank you.
And I would like...
[ Cheers and applause ]
What?!
She is in the game!
What is happening?!
I would really like to put my name in the running here.
I want to know more about your musicality.
I want to know more about what -- what really
get you going and lights you up.
I think you're amazing and... [ Sighs ]
Look at that. I don't know how to do this,
but I think I did it right.
Kelsea is the first coach
to use the Coach Replay to try to steal.
[ Laughter, cheers and applause ]
You're really worth it.
I messed up.
It's also very dirty and underhanded.
It's not. I'm gonna keep talking until --
Is there a timer? I'm gonna use it all. No. No.
There's no timer. No, there's no timer.
Just my four kids waiting at home.
Is there a timer?
[ Laughter ]
That was dirty. [ Laughs ]
I have written with Hillary Lindsey
and Shane McAnally, like, the greats of Nashville,
but I've also written and had collaborations
with The Chainsmokers and Halsey. Period.
And I live for the synergy of -- of the blend.
I can be of value there.
I'm navigating that landscape right now.
Help. Adam: Yeah, you need some help.
Please. Let's just get down to brass tacks here, okay?
John Legend -- highly decorated artist.
There's no award he doesn't have.
Look at all these decorations.
Look at this man.
Michael Bublé -- Canadian. We love that.
[ Laughter ]
Kelsea -- her star is rising.
This is what you have before you.
Well, Adam, this was very helpful
and doing nothing for this man.
You -- You basically didn't commit to anything.
Okay, would you like me to pick someone for him?
Pick someone! [ Laughter ]
I would love to see you with Kelsea.
Okay. I would.
Ask the question. Dan, who do you pick as your coach?
[ Indistinct shouting ]
**
Thank you so much.
**
I...
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back.
Dan, who do you pick as your coach?
* Anything could happen *
* Anything could happen *
* Anything could happen *
* Anything could happen * Dan: Thank you so much.
* Anything could happen *
I... [ Laughs ]
* Anything could happen *
I gotta go team Kelsea!
Oh, my God!
Oh, my God!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Michael: Awesome.
Oh, my God!
The Coach Replay button -- basically, it's our whoopsie.
I'm sorry I didn't turn sooner. I literally love you so much.
All is forgiven.
I love that our Coach Replay button
can be used on any artist,
and it can be an artist that no coach turns for
or one or multi coaches turn for.
Here you go. I get boots?!
When I turned and I saw Dan,
I realized that I messed up.
I whoopsied hard.
It was a me problem.
I had to do it. You're gonna go so far in this competition.
I'm newer than them. Wild.
We can be new together. Period. That's what I'm saying.
You're not new. You're now. I love you so much.
I like that. Carson, I like it. Thank you so, so, so much.
I'm gonna steal it.
Dan's voice is really unique.
His high notes were, like, smack you in the face.
I loved his vibrato. I thought it was really special.
I don't think we know quite how good he is yet.
John: Well done, Kelsea.
I feel so good about Team Kelsea right now.
History made by Kelsea Ballerini today,
the first person to use their Coach Replay
in such a dirty, underhanded way.
And it worked.
It's been a little slow for me today.
We've got some making up to do,
but I'm gonna pull out all the stops this season.
Okay, I got to -- [ Crowd chanting indistinctly ]
I've got tricks up my sleeve.
I don't need a certain genre.
I just want to be inspired. I want to be excited.
And I want to hear something special in an artist.
And when I do -- boop! -- I push.
I am Lilli Doll, I'm 20 years old,
and I am from Irwin, Ohio.
A lot of people don't believe that it's my real name.
People say that it's a star name for sure.
I am an artist in every sense of the word --
painting, drawing, thrifting.
I started a business selling jewelry and lighter covers,
charm necklaces and clothing that I create.
My next idea is I want to make it look like
there's smoke inside of it, and I don't know
how I'm gonna do that yet.
Okay. Which coaches?
Adam.
Kelsea.
My mom is always playing classic rock in the house,
and I'm very thankful that my parents
got me listening to good music from a young age.
I'm going to be singing "Heart of Glass" by Blondie
for my blind audition.
And stepping into that as who I am as an artist
is gonna be really exciting.
Man: Our next artist is entering now.
This is my first big step at this,
and this could change my life.
It's gonna be good, y'all.
This is all I've been waiting for.
**
Yeah!
I love me some Blondie. * Once I had a love and it was a gas *
Wow. * Soon turned out had a heart of glass *
* Seemed like the real thing, only to find *
* Mucho mistrust *
* Love's gone behind *
* Lost inside adorable delusion *
* And I cannot hide *
* I'm the one you're using *
* Please don't push me aside *
Come on, Adam. * We coulda made it cruising *
* Yeah, riding high *
* On love's true bluish light *
* Whoa, whoa *
* Whoa, oh, ohh *
* Whoa, oh, whooooa *
[ Cheers and applause ]
John: Wow!
**
John: Hello. Hello.
Kelsea: Hello. What is your name?
I'm Lilli Doll, I'm 20 years old,
and I am from Irwin, Ohio.
I think that song
is deceivingly difficult, vocally. Oh, yeah.
Sometimes when it's about the song,
that's kind of the best thing you can hear
when you don't get a chair turn
'cause it's not 'cause of your art,
it's not 'cause of your talent.
So, thanks for blessing us with your awesomeness.
Thank you. Lilli, the fact that you're 20
and you're confident -- Like, I didn't hear any nerves.
Like, that's ultimate cool girl.
There were so many times
where I was so certain that I was, like, so ready.
Every time any "no" happened, I let it take me down.
And then I would come back up,
and it always, "A," made me better,
but, "B," it was the right thing at the right time.
And I hope that you feel
really, really, really proud of yourself.
Yeah. You're incredible. You're incredible.
I also have a small business. I made my skirt today.
Oh, cool!
I made some things for you guys.
Oh, my God, you brought gifts, too? Oh, my gosh.
Yeah, I did.
Kelsea: Lilli was really cool.
She's young, and I think that she just needs
some more time to, like, really develop her voice
and then come back. Oh!
Oh, yeah!
Kelsea: I want a team full of storytellers.
I hope it sounds 12 different ways,
different voices that aspire to go in different genres.
I want to feel like everything is represented.
That, to me, is what I'm looking for.
* This is "The Voice" *
Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
I want someone to come out and just sing a pure, simple...
Mm. ...vocal.
I want, like, an Alison Krauss-esque.
Oh, yeah, I mean, of course. But you know what I mean?
Where, like, that kind of -- Where they just sing.
Yeah.
**
Beautiful. Look at Daddy.
**
Oh.
John: Alright.
* Breathin' in, breathin' out *
* How you been? *
* You settled down? * [ Cheers and applause ]
* You feelin' right? * I don't want to scream
'cause of the baby, but congratulations. * You feelin' proud?
* How are your kids? *
* Where are they now?
* You build a boat *
* You build a life *
* You lose your friends *
* You lose your wife *
* You settle in to routine *
* Where are you? * One more.
* What does it mean? *
**
* And if I get too close *
* And I'm not how you hoped *
Let's go!
* Forgive my northern attitude *
* Oh, I was raised out in the cold *
Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
* And if the sun don't shine *
* Till the summertime *
* Forgive my northern attitude *
* Oh, I was raised on little light *
* And if the sun don't rise *
* Till the summertime *
* Forgive my northern attitude *
* Oh, I was raised on little light *
[ Cheers and applause ]
**
That is, what we say, perfection.
**
Four chairs, baby.
Four chairs.
What is your name?
My name is Ethan Eckenroad,
and I'm from Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania.
Oh, my gosh. Dude.
Ethan, oh, my God.
I have been waiting for you, my friend.
Ah! The hardest thing to do
on this show i--
What are you doing? Don't worry about it.
Um...
[ Laughter ] The hardest thing to do is --
I'm sorry. I don't know what's going on over there.
Is talk when someone's putting on their boots
right next to you. It's hard, yeah. It's distracting.
You have an effortless thing that you do
that is so soulful and so simple.
You have my favorite voice I've heard so far
this entire blind audition.
Thank you so much.
It would be a tragedy if you weren't on my team.
Wow. He ended with emotional blackmail.
"If you don't choose me..."
"Not be able to go on."
Kelsea: It's my turn.
These, too, can be yours.
Oh, is that what you -- Ahh.
I'm in a silly mood, but to be very, very serious,
this is the first time
I felt like I was turning for an artist
like I'm at your show.
I'm obviously the newest artist on this panel,
but I love Noah.
I have a song out with Noah right now.
I know. When you flipped the --
* Northern attitude *
Ooh, that sounded nice.
I'm a songwriter.
I'm a country artist. Whatever.
I'm a fan of you. Thank you.
Michael: Yo, Ethan, I love country.
I can even prove to you how much I love country
because there's a picture I have...
[ Laughter ] What?
Michael: I mean, I sported that mullet
for most of my life.
Oh, wow.
I told you he was related to Blake.
I told you. [ Laughter ]
I told my mom after the man bun,
I was gonna do a mullet, so...
[ Laughter ]
I'd love to have you on my team, Ethan.
And I'm so proud of us
'cause I think we know good music
and you're good music.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
I'm so impressed by your poise,
by the soulfulness of your voice.
It was just a beautiful experience for us.
I do not have a photo of me with a mullet.
I will grant you that. No?!
I don't know if that's the way
I would try to convince you to join my team anyway.
[ Laughter ]
I may be at a disadvantage in this argument,
and sometimes I have to bring in reinforcements...
Oh, God. ...to solidify my argument.
[ Laughter, cheers and applause ]
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah! Kelsea: Hey. Whoa!
Oh, yeah! Oh!
[ Cheers and applause continue ]
Oh, my goodness.
I want you on my team, too.
Oh, my God!
Whoo!
Alright, the message is clear.
Ethan, I would love to have you on my team.
Thank you. Thank you.
Alright, Ethan, who are you gonna choose to be your coach?
[ Indistinct shouting ]
**
Come on home. Come on.
**
I think I choose...
**
I know Noah!
I choose Team Adam.
Yes! Yeah.
[ Cheers and applause ]
I just had a heart attack.
Yo, thank you, bro.
I'm a four-chair kind of guy.
Ethan is amazing.
There's no bells and whistles.
There's no over-singing.
There's just his voice, and it's pure.
I think he's gonna go really far on the show.
Coming back has been, so far, just a blast.
It's really, really fun.
I did my gag. My gag is done.
I brought out my friend Kadeem.
He flipped the sign.
He danced, dazzled,
and, uh, it didn't work.
**
Adam: I felt like I was at a cellphone store.
I don't know what was happening.
[ Laughs ]
I've been known as the king of the four-chair turn in the past.
[ Chanting "Adam" ] Adam is trying to encroach on my territory,
but it's mine, and I can't have that.
Ah! Kelsea: Ay yi yi.
Well done, well done.
[ Cheers and applause ]
**
My heart was pounding.
That was good.
No, you're the best. You'rethe best.
You'rethe best.
Honestly. I love this person.
I -- She's so awesome.
So awesome.
I'll see you in, like, two seconds.
Okay, great.
I paid him. A lot.
A lot of money, a lot of money for that.
