would be an unusual occurrence.

In South Florida, it wasn't.

I'm a retired special agent.

I have a total of 38 years of law enforcement experience

On June 27, 1994,

the Miramar Police Department was investigating reports of

two missing girls,

Marie Rogers and Sharon Anderson.

The night before, they had been seen at Casey's Nickelodeon,

the club owned by a guy known as Butch Casey.

My mom called me on Sunday morning.

She said, "Sharon didn't come home last night."

And my sister and her had a date.

And no matter where Sharon was,

if she had a date with my mom, she made that date.

MURPHY: The investigators know from an employee of the club

that Butch had been seen with two young females earlier,

and at early morning hours

they left together.

A Miramar police officer goes to the home

of Butch Casey.

When he gets to the house, after he knocks

on the front door, he makes his way around

to the back of the house 'cause he can hear music

inside the house.

When he gets to the back door, he can see through the window.

And in the house...

bodies lying on the floor.

CHUCK FEBRO: On June 27, 1994,

I was the Deputy Chief of Police.

I was the Deputy Chief of Police.

And I also was in charge of

the criminal investigations division,

along with the patrol division

for Miramar Police Department.

This is the route I took down 33rd Street

to get to Miramar Isles to get to East Shore Drive,

and then we'll come up to scene of the triple homicide.

When I first arrived, all those palm trees

were all there, and there's a, uh, a fence here

that's probably six feet tall,

so it'd be really easy for someone

to approach this house with no one knowing.

When I pulled up,

there was police cars everywhere.

Crime scene tape, detectives at the front door.

MURPHY: When investigators arrive at the house,

one of the things they see is a blue T-shirt

lying on the ground.

And on that shirt were the words

Consolidated Electric Supply.

You don't know if that's evidence or not yet,

but just to be on the safe side,

you're gonna pick that up as evidence.

The front door was locked.

It appeared that all the windows were closed and locked,

but they found the back sliding glass door unlocked.

FEBRO: The house backed up

to a lake, and then there were a bunch

of finger canals, and a lot of people lived on the canals.

It's a very nice neighborhood.

Very private, very quiet.

Very little crime in that area.

MURPHY: There is no signs

whatsoever of forced entry into this house.

FEBRO: I was aghast

when I first walked in the house.

There was a lot of furniture pushed aside.

Looked like some burglars came in and had ransacked the house

to look for money.

The entire house, other than maybe the bedrooms,

were all marble tile floors, and there was blood drippings

on the tile.

And there was a shoe print...

...that had blood residue on it

and transferred it to the tile floor.

The three victims,

two very young women in their early 20s

and a white male, were laying in between

the living room and the dining room on the floor.

One of the female victims was tied up

with phone line on her ankles.

MARY'S MARTINEZ: And that's, in my opinion,

pretty symbolic.

Maybe she did something they didn't like,

like try to run away.

and general evidence that are located on crime scenes.

with a gunshot wound.

He was beat up. His face was turned to the side,

and it was obvious that he had been struck in some manner

because he had numerous injuries to his face.

She was the one with her ankles tied together.

And it appeared to me that she was fired at close range

and shot in the neck

with one wound to the back of her neck.

as Butch Casey,

who was the owner of the house

MURPHY: Unfortunately, the two missing girls,

they were two of the victims in this triple murder,

and when I answered, she asked

And he said, "Yes. She is."

It just felt like it just couldn't have been real.

We were probably closer than most siblings would be

We were tight.

When we were little,

Sharon had wanted to be a police officer.

she wanted to be in front of the camera.

She started modeling and doing photo shoots.

She saw herself in entertainment.

This was, like, early '90s, and Miami

was just getting on the scene for music videos.

And she was picked out of a line of thousands

of women on Miami Beach to star opposite

BOWIE: After she did the video, she had figured out

that "This is the world that I want to be in."

Marie also had a lot of dreams and hopes.

She was in fashion school.

She was very artistic and could do

really great things with costumes.

Sharon and Marie, they were good friends.

Marie was really chill, liked good music,

good food, loved her daughter.

She's who I would expect Sharon to be friends with.

She was giving, she was caring, she was kind.

But I didn't know who Butch Casey was.

MARTINEZ: Butch Casey was described

as a playboy.

He owned Casey's Nickelodeon.

They were known for their ladies' nights, drink specials.

He was well off, he drove a Mercedes-Benz.

At the nightclub, he knew a lot of people

and would often bring them back to his house.

MURPHY: We know that Butch moved from Buffalo, New York,

to Miramar, Florida, the Southern Florida area,

to Miramar, Florida, the Southern Florida area,

in the 1980s.

In Buffalo, he owned a nightclub up there.

He comes to Miramar and opens up Casey's Nickelodeon club,

and it's very successful.

Butch had several run-ins with the law

both before and after his arrival to Miami.

And he had a prior arrest for narcotics violations.

The '70s and the '80s is when the drug culture

really started hitting South Florida.

It's not unusual for there to be drug activity

in a lot of the nightclubs.

So, was Casey's Nickelodeon club the same?

Was this a drug deal gone bad?

FEBRO: The detectives located neighbor Gary Foy,

who had seen something suspicious

on the date of the murder.

As he left his house, he noticed

that Butch Casey's black Mercedes-Benz

was leaving the neighborhood.

He did not see Butch in the car,

He did not see Butch in the car,

but he saw two young males.

MURPHY: It's a great indicator that

there are at least two people involved.

So, our initial theory here...

...is that Butch and the two ladies

came back to Butch's house.

They fell asleep.

Two assailants entered the house from the back

through an unlocked door.

They start rummaging through the house,

presumably looking for things of value.

Jewelry, cash, drugs.

Butch hears this.

He gets up and encounters the two assailants.

A tussle ensues.

One of the assailants shoots and kills Butch Casey.

The two ladies hear this, they come out to investigate.

And now the assailants take control of them

and eventually kill them as well.

In their haste to get out of the house,

stepped in blood, left a bloody shoe print,

and dropped their blue T-shirt on the ground

as they make their escape.

But the investigators have no idea who they're looking for.

There are still

pieces of evidence that have been collected

from the crime scene

that are still going through analysis.

So, you're waiting on those to come back in.

MARTINEZ: As they're waiting for pending evidence results--

DNA, fingerprints--

investigators dug into other evidence

that was found within the crime scene.

The investigators stumbled upon what appeared to be

a collection of audiotapes,

some of which were conversations

that were recorded between Butch and a woman.

The way it sounds like on that audiotape,

these audio recordings were done secretly.

And it was, short of a better word, horrific to listen to it.

It causes my blood to boil.

MURPHY: Makes you wonder,

why does Butch Casey have those tapes?

MURPHY: There's been three murders.

You're looking for potential leads anywhere

you can find them.

When they were processing the crime scene,

numerous audio recordings were discovered in Butch's house.

One of the tapes was a recording

of Butch and a woman who was fighting.

And this recording was just days before the murder.

MURPHY: It sounds like it was Butch

and what appears to be his ex-girlfriend

or current girlfriend, who knows?

So, who is this woman on the audiotape recording?

While investigating Butch's personal life,

the detectives run across

a domestic violence incident report

between Butch and his ex-girlfriend Kristal Fisher.

FEBRO: Any detective would look into,

when a husband is murdered or a wife is murdered,

when a husband is murdered or a wife is murdered,

usually look to the spouse or the girlfriend.

So that was definitely a possibility,

that it-- she could have been involved in these murders.

(Kristal screams)

MURPHY: During this conversation,

she's in a very submissive role.

But once she's left, she may become bitter.

Could she be so upset by what took place

that she wants to-- some type of retaliation against him?

Because nobody should talk to her like that.

Now, this introduces another theory.

Did Kristal decide,

"I'm not taking that from anybody,

I'm gonna get him back," and she decides

to hire someone to kill Butch Casey?

Maybe through the contacts she met at the bar,

there were two guys who were willing to commit a murder

for her, for money.

She surely knows

that his back sliding door is rarely locked.

The hit men got in the house, shoot Butch.

Sharon and Marie are potential witnesses.

So they kill both ladies.

They stage it to look like a robbery gone bad.

Maybe they decided their payment was gonna be

a black convertible Mercedes-Benz,

and they make their escape.

While Kristal Fisher may have had the motive

for killing Butch Casey,

did Kristal have the financial means

to order a murder, to order a hit?

Did she have the contacts?

Through their investigation, they subpoenaed phone records,

they subpoenaed financial records,

they subpoenaed financial records,

they talked to other individuals.

Eventually, it was determined that

there was no evidence whatsoever

that she was complicit in planning these murders.

And the investigators were comfortable with the fact that

most likely, it was not her.

So now investigators can set Kristal Fisher aside

and move on to other potential leads.

Is this just a straight-out robbery?

We just don't know. This is part of the investigative leads

that have to be followed up.

BOWIE: It was frustrating,

because you spend a lot of time waiting.

They might be a headline on the evening news,

but it's a whole other story when it's your family.

And in my family, Sharon was very much the glue.

And when you lose a presence like that in your family,

it has an immediate impact.

Right? Because then,

who's there, who's going to be hopeful

and look for the good?

It's hard when you lose that person.

MARTINEZ: Investigators have the T-shirt

that was on the front porch,

but they had yet to receive

any sort of DNA analysis.

MURPHY: What you're looking for is pieces

of the DNA that are referred to as markers.

And those markers are what you're looking for

to compare to known DNA samples.

You look for 20 markers, because 20 markers

may get you to the 99.9% match.

Once you know what those markers are,

then you can compare it to known DNA samples

of other people,

and you're looking for that match.

DNA is discovered

in your skin tissue,

in your sweat, in your saliva.

Anything that your body excretes, excretes a DNA sample.

We're always continually shedding skin cells.

That's gonna be on your clothing whether you want it to or not.

that's got to be full of DNA evidence.

Well, the analysis of the DNA test comes back,

and there's multiple pieces of DNA

on that shirt.

MARTINEZ: Except that only one

was able to be identified.

It was the DNA of Sharon.

Could the killer's DNA be on the shirt? Absolutely.

But given that it's 1994, they weren't able to identify

exactly who the other profiles are.

MURPHY: In 1994, DNA analysis

was continuing to evolve.

And at that time, what was required

collection of DNA in a pristine condition

where it hasn't been adulterated by another person's DNA

or an outside chemical that happened to get on that shirt.

in 1994 was rather difficult.

MARTINEZ: So even though there was

two sets of DNA on the shirt,

two sets of DNA on the shirt,

it was ultimately a dead end.

MURPHY: When an investigation hits a wall,

a detective will reach out to the law enforcement community,

a detective will reach out to the law enforcement community,

professionals, people that you trust.

So now we have our flyers out there with all the local police,

asking anybody for any potential leads.

Investigators received a call from the Palm Beach County

Florida Fire Department.

They'd found a...

black convertible Mercedes-Benz on fire.

The tags on the car

came back to Butch Casey.

MARTINEZ: This was a huge break

for the case

because Butch's neighbor

stated he saw two males

getting into the black Mercedes next door.

So we can assume that it was driven

from the home by the same person that committed the murder.

They might still have an attempt at DNA samples.

collected various samples and submitted them

for analysis at the lab.

Usually, when vehicles are torched,

the heat and the flames will kill off any DNA.

It's 98% water.

So amongst the water, you know, the sweat,

amino acids, things like that, all of that will evaporate,

given that the fire would reach such a high degree of intensity.

But despite the extent

of the damage from being set on fire,

they were able to lift a couple fingerprints

from the vehicle door handles.

The fact that they were able to get some prints off of it,

that was amazing.

Unfortunately for this case...

...it wasn't a hit in the AFIS system,

which stands for Automated Fingerprint

the database that is used by crime scene investigators

to upload any prints that may have been collected

off of the names that are stored in the database.

MURPHY: You're looking for potential leads anywhere

you can find them, so investigators

go back to the crime scene.

While I was at the crime scene,

I was next to an entertainment center,

and there was a red light that was illuminated.

That meant something was being recorded.

Just a couple feet from me,

I look over and they've got all these potted plants

on top of the entertainment center.

And I notice that there was a couple

that were pulled a little bit apart.

So I said, oh, what's back there?

So I pull the plants apart,

So I pull the plants apart,

and there was a camera on a tripod.

And I looked at the crime scene tech

And I looked at the crime scene tech

and I said, "No, it couldn't be."

They said, "Well, you think we could

take a look and see what that's recording?"

It appeared that Butch had set this up

to record, for whatever reason.

MURPHY: Why would Butch Casey have

a video camera hidden

inside of his house?

I'm going to guess that the investigator

that found that is like,

"Guys, you're not going to believe this."

I don't know. But here's the bottom line.

Did Butch put that camera up there

and record his own murder?

MARINEZ: There is a huge break in the case

when one of the investigators notices that there is

a surveillance camera in Butch's living room.

Even more lucky than this was found was the fact

that the camera was pointed in the very direction

of where the entire incident took place.

MURPHY: In 1994,

security cameras were starting to come along,

mostly in businesses.

But I don't know of a soul

who had one in their house.

Butch Casey did.

And lo and behold, they turn it on,

and it was recording.

And it recorded this heinous crime.

People are just amazed.

They'd never seen anything like that.

Never had anybody had a video recorder running.

Never had anybody had a video recorder running.

I'm thinking, boy, this is going to be

an important part of evidence.

And sure enough, it was an extensive video,

And sure enough, it was an extensive video,

and it looked like we had a very valuable tool

to assist us in this investigation.

BOWIE: I got a call from the Miramar Police Department,

and they said, "Your sister's murder was caught on tape."

And I said, "What?"

And I said, "What?"

I didn't know what that meant.

Are you saying that somebody recorded it?

And he said, "No, it was a home security camera.

"And they're going to unseal it tomorrow,

"And they're going to unseal it tomorrow,

so we wanted you to know."

And I flew down to the Miramar Police Department

with a really good family friend,

and I watched the unedited tape.

MARTINEZ: The video shows Marie,

Sharon and Butch.

They are having a drink, talking.

They were kind of like in the early hours of the morning,

having a good time post having been at the club.

But then it happened.

Two offenders are seen

walking directly into the living room from

One of the offenders goes straight to Butch and hits him

in the face, resulting in him falling to the ground,

where he continues to punch and physically assault Butch.

and a second offender chases after her.

One of them was wearing a hat and a pair of sunglasses,

either cloth or a rag across the front of his face.

Both were wearing some sort of work gloves or latex gloves.

That, for us, really is a red flag because

they didn't deposit any fingerprints anywhere.

MURPHY: The first assailant has Butch down on the ground,

and the assailant continues to maintain control

of Butch, and he uses his handgun,

which appears to be a TEC-9, because that's

what it looks like to me on the video.

slaps Butch with that in the head.

It looks like they're trying to extract information.

But you can't tell because

there's no audio to go along with the video.

And then assailant number two brings the female from

that room and puts her next to the other female and Butch

so that all three are there together

in that dining room area.

And her feet have been bound with a telephone cord.

It's obvious they're looking for something.

It could be money.

Butch has a successful nightclub.

I'm thinking the two assailants probably thought

that Butch kept the cash in the house.

When he runs back out, Butch pays the price every time.

Because I think they're saying we can't find what we're

looking for, and he was struck again with the weapon.

If it's a robbery, well, now it's a robbery gone bad.

Because not only do you have Butch there,

you've got two females who appear

to be there just simply at the wrong time.

Sharon was begging.

He made her get up.

But then she laid on the floor.

And then he comes and stands over my sister,

and he shot her.

And then he shot at Marie.

And then he shot at Butch.

And then he shot at Butch.

It's... It's hard to watch.

Despite the years that we have working the crime scenes

or seeing certain things,

it's different when you're seeing it actually take place.

MURPHY: As you're watching this video, you cannot identify

either one of the two assailants.

But then, one of the assailants

does something that's completely unexpected.

MURPHY: Now that all three victims are dead,

and revealed himself.

He certainly didn't know about the camera.

He's to the point where he's not worried about anybody

identifying him because there's nobody else in the house.

The fact that one of the assailants

is now revealing his identity,

as an investigator,

that's a fantastic piece of evidence

that you have a videotape

of a triple homicide.

Your initial reaction is, this is a slam dunk case.

We've got them. We've got them on tape killing this guy.

But then reality sets in when you watch the tape.

This is 1994, and you realize it's in black and white.

And the quality of the cameras were not

4K, like we have today.

You've got to look at an investigation

from how a defense attorney is going to look at it.

was approximately six feet tall,

So the investigators decided to send that tape

My understanding of the enhancement process

at that time is they had to take still photographs

taken from the videotape,

and that is what the Bureau tries to enhance.

And I'm sure it was state of the art at the time.

They could maybe reduce some of the motion blur involved,

because, you know, on a video, people are moving.

But it was nothing like you could do today.

So it's not that final "gotcha" piece of evidence, you know,

that you're going to have to convict somebody in a trial.

And then once it was enhanced,

they had a sketch artist come in.

What we learned is that the clarity of the picture

still wasn't there.

It was still hard to identify the assailants.

MURPHY: A few weeks later, on July 14,

Metro Dade Police investigated a home invasion

in which two suspects were arrested.

When they took the suspects to the station,

one of the officers realized that the suspects looked

very much like the composite drawing

that Miramar Police had distributed to everyone.

So they contacted the detective in charge at Miramar PD,

said, "Hey, you may want to come down

and take a look at this person."

And, "It looks an awful lot

like the person in your drawing."

to see these two potential suspects in the murder case--

Pablo Ibar and Francisco Rincon.

there's no doubt in my mind that's him.

Unfortunately, the second assailant kept

his hat and glasses on all the time,

so the identifying characteristics are not there

like they are with Pablo's drawing.

As this investigation has developed,

we now know that Pablo and his crew have been involved

in another home invasion robbery.

They're known to be very violent.

They're known to assault anybody and everybody

MARTINEZ: While under arrest, law enforcement collected

the shoes that were being worn by Francisco and Pablo

in an effort to compare

the bottom of the shoes to the bloody footprint

that was located on the crime scene.

MURPHY: You have an expert do an analysis.

However, the shoes that Rincon had on in jail...

Guess what?

They matched the bloody footprint.

Law enforcement approached Rincon--

"Hey, what's going on here?

"Why do you have these shoes on

that match from the murder site?"

Of course...

(chuckling) he wants nothing to do with that.

So he explains that Pablo Ibar

and a third roommate share a place together,

and it's not unusual for us

to change clothing, to change shoes.

We wear each other's clothes all the time.

What he says is those shoes actually belong to Pablo Ibar.

MARTINEZ: Pablo said that was a lie.

He stated that he lives with his mother

and provided his mother's address.

So, of course, the investigators go to the mom's house.

Now, remember,

Pablo's in custody down in Dade County.

They show Pablo's mom

the composite drawing, and she immediately

identifies it as her son,

They also learned

that Pablo's mother works for a company called

If you remember the blue shirt that was found in the front yard

what was on that shirt?

MARTINEZ: Which ties in Pablo

via his mother and her employment,

but also the fact that Sharon's DNA

was found on the T-shirt.

So the real question is,

why is the victim's DNA on that shirt?

MARTINEZ: After investigators go to Pablo's mother's house,

detectives execute a search warrant to Pablo's apartment.

They find a box of latex gloves

for a firearm known as a TEC-9.

MURPHY: That's not a common weapon for people to own.

may be involved in some criminal activities.

We know on the video that we saw

At the house, they come across Jean Klimeczko.

Now, Klimeczko said he's only been staying there

just for a short amount of time.

Says he's not involved in this triple homicide.

They show him a composite drawing,

and he identifies the people

and he identifies the people

in the composite drawing as Pablo,

and another guy named Seth Penalver,

and another guy named Seth Penalver,

who might be the guy with the hat and the glasses on.

He looks like the person holding the TEC-9,

the one that assaults Butch immediately.

They ask Jean Klimeczko what he knows about

that particular date and time, on June 26,

the day the three murders were committed.

Here comes Pablo and Seth into the house, and he said,

The detectives go to Casey's Nickelodeon.

They made contact with the bar manager,

who recognized Seth and Pablo's pictures.

He said he did, in fact,

see Pablo and Seth that night at the bar,

that they were frequent customers and that they were

looking at Butch.

But he didn't think much of it.

Just because of the type of person that Butch is,

he would call a lot of attention to himself.

He carried large amounts of cash.

So he could have been at the club,

and someone saw him and then followed them home.

MURPHY: Now that the investigators have placed Pablo and Seth

...our final theory is

that this is a burglary that went wrong.

So after leaving the club,

They came in through the sliding glass door.

two months after the triple homicide,

it resulted in a hung jury.

Now, that resulted in a second trial.

But this time,

the defendants have been separated

and go through individual trials.

In both trials,

both defendants were found guilty and sentenced to death.

We finally had, like, a period of a couple of years

after almost two decades in prison,

and he was found innocent.

How did that happen?

investigators go back and review the evidence.

there were multiple DNA samples found,

but there was only one positive identification.

And that was the DNA of Sharon Anderson,

one of the victims.
