a man found his mother dead in her bathtub.

Jill Halliburton is a relative of the billion-dollar

Halliburton oil operation founder.

rapes, assaults, burglaries, robberies.

So here we're coming up to the residence of the victim.

On September 8, 2014,

We were expedited to the scene.

Once the officers get there, they notice that the son,

Justin Su, who made the initial call in to 911,

The first thing that's always going to happen is you want to

secure that scene. We're going to check

every closet in every room to make sure there's

not a bad guy or a suspect hiding.

At the same time, you're going to have

different people doing different jobs.

Once the crime scene is secure,

and we verify the status of the victim,

that's when you call the professionals.

And the most important role in this case,

that DNA evidence collection.

you have to work from the outside in.

First, they take a picture of the street location.

They take a picture of the address.

Those are the first three things that they do.

Then everything, step by step, is recorded.

The first piece of evidence that was encountered

on the exterior of the residence was the knife.

It possibly suggests there was a struggle.

that gives you more questions.

As the officers are making entrance inside the home,

they notice a belt that was tied into a knot.

KINSEY: Clearly, it looked like it could have been used to

tie someone up or try to restrain somebody.

HERTADO: Towards the back of the house, there was a door

that led into the family room,

and that door had a tempered glass

that was pushed inward.

This could have been the point of entry.

Once the crime scene investigators head over

their first observation was that the room was ransacked.

There were traces of blood on the carpet.

There was also a blood stain on the pillow.

And the blood also led into the bathroom, where...

...the body of Jill Su was found.

KINSEY: Jill Halliburton Su was found lying outside

the bathtub, bound hands and feet,

multiple stab wounds.

Significant amount of blood everywhere.

And we were overwhelmed by the amount

of blood and injuries to her body

when we initially walk in.

it's obviously a murder.

Once the tub was drained,

a very large serrated weapon was found

at the bottom of the bathtub.

HURTADO: The crime scene

investigators collected

the evidence by swabbing

for DNA left behind, especially in areas where

there's shattered glass,

textiles and fiber,

and anywhere the suspect came

in contact with.

was sent off to the Broward crime lab.

We will analyze it, whether it's under

a higher magnification lens to see if

there are any other traces of evidence.

She was beside herself.

Mandy and Justin, my daughter and my son,

loved their mother.

And when she walked in the room,

it's like the sunshine's just, like, all over.

That's how I remember her.

I just don't understand why...

KINSEY: Initially, we were suspicious

because Justin's story changed

in his 911 call,

just in that short period of time, from suicide to homicide,

'cause those were two different ends of the spectrum.

(crying): My mom killed herself!

She cut herself, and she looks so cut up.

She stabbed herself and threw herself in the bathtub.

Clearly, once the officers got on scene,

and she was bound,

it wasn't a suicide.

And you do have Justin on scene

with bloody clothes.

We learned that Justin was an avid knife collector

and had all different sizes and shapes of knives.

The knife that was found outside the front door, and also,

the knife that was found in the bathtub,

all belonged to Justin.

At that initial point,

Justin could be our suspect.

Did he do it? If he did do it,

why did he do it? How did he do it?

That was the mystery.

NAN YAO: "Miss her" is an understatement.

I miss her so much.

So this is probably a day before our wedding.

Yeah. You can see we are both very happy.

(laughs)

You know, in Japanese, there's a word called

"isshokenmei." It mean "try very hard."

that was going to be my friend for the rest of my life.

and she just found the humor in everything.

VADEBONCOEUR: Her son was the number one suspect.

Justin, he was, you know, struggling

just at that time of his life, you know, whatever.

I mean, his mother was this huge support for him.

CONCEPTION: Justin and Jill, there was some friction there,

He came home at 20, was living with his parents.

They had to help him get a job.

And so, there was some strain there.

There were little arguments back and forth.

That looks like a motive.

One that could possibly lead

to homicide, getting upset at your-your parents

or one of your parents 'cause it's happened before.

I've seen parents get killed by children over lesser things.

The day Jill died, I was at work,

I see somebody covered their head

in my security camera.

I called Justin.

First I say, "Is that you?"

So, I say, "Are-are you there?"

He said, "No." I say,

"Why don't you go home and check on Mom?

I see-- I saw something kind of strange."

And then, uh, a-about ten minutes,

15 minutes later,

I received this frantic call.

JUSTIN: Mom!

JUSTIN: Mom!

NAN YAO: He told me, "Mom is dead.

"Mom is dead.

"She is facedown in the bathtub.

"She is facedown in the bathtub.

Filled with blood."

I bolted out from my office.

Yeah. On the way, we call police.

NAN YAO: I get to the house,

and I saw Justin sitting there,

totally out with this long gaze.

His eye have-have no soul in there.

He saw-- he's seeing something far away.

He was so out of it.

I know he's really upset.

I know he's really upset.

If what he saw is true, inside the house,

he must be tr-tremendously upset.

And I just lost it after that.

I have no memory whatsoever

of who took me to police station.

I'm not sure how many hour went by during that time at all.

CONCEPTION: It's important to look at the people closest

to the victim for this case.

indicates a crime of passion.

This was personal.

Just want to go over the events

And then he tells me,

"Oh, like, I think that was live this morning."

And I told him, "I'm gonna go home and check it out.

I'll call you when I get there."

You remember what time it was you got home?

Um, 12:38.

I walk into my house, to my garage, take off my shoes.

I look at my room, and

there's a drawer in my room with a bunch of knives I collect.

That was open.

And I'm like, "That's-that's weird."

Your dad tells you there's somebody inside your house

that he sees on a camera...

...and your first thought is to go home... Yeah!

How do you think these guys got out?

JUSTIN: I-I-I said...

JUSTIN: I think they went through the front door

and the whole goal is to break down that shield.

And what they're doing is to let him think

and you watch their every movement.

A lot of the stuff that we talked about earlier,

KINSEY: So, at this point in time...

...Justin is the number one suspect.

He could've staged a scene to make it look like a burglary by

smashing out the glass door and ransacking the house.

And then, it appeared that there had been

some type of fight with Justin and Jill.

Justin had maybe tried to restrain her using

that green belt that was tied into a knot.

She had gotten free of that restraint,

and the green nylon belt was dropped inside the front door

where she was trying to escape.

That's where we found the knife, outside the front door.

Justin had overtaken her and taken her into the bathtub,

where she was stabbed over 20 times.

And that's where we determined

the homicide was committed.

were nonstop, which made him look worse.

And so, he starts to become belligerent.

Basically, what that says,

you got something to hide and you're defensive.

I just told you you're not making sense,

And you're just gonna sit here now and tell me

you made that up about going back in your car?

Yeah.

I was so ... stupid.

12-ish, I think. Uh, I started walking back

to my car and then I got to my car around, like, 12:10,

and I started driving back at around 12:18.

Those investigators now have to try to verify

and that he wasn't at the residence

when his mom was horrifically killed.

NAN YAO: To think they're suspecting

Justin at all.

But at the early stage of your investigation,

we're jumping to that conclusion, right?

So, I asked for a lawyer,

and before that, I already heard

from the hallway that Justin was screaming at them.

I knew that the situation is not good.

Kind of pushing him to do something he didn't want to do.

NAN YAO: And, uh, so, I knocked the door and said,

"If you're going to treat us like a suspect,

I need a lawyer."

I'm not sure how many hour after that we are still there.

To a detective, that looks like just a straight-up lie.

There's a pillow and, like, a blanket there.

Police were able to obtain school security footage,

while in the parking lot of the school.

And given the fact that it was verified

that Justin was at his college at 12:00,

there's no way he could've been at this murder scene

KINSEY: And also the entrance and exit to the community,

that showed the times that he came and went.

His alibi was found to be truthful,

so he was completely cleared of being our number one suspect.

CONCEPTION: When it comes to the trauma

that Justin had observed,

it was the main catalyst

to the inaccuracies

of the information he was relaying to the detectives.

And that right there, that was telling the world

that, okay, my mom's dead.

That's the sweet Justin.

So, after our interrogation of Justin,

we conclusively determined

that he played absolutely no role in his mom's murder.

And so, we can take those resources

and those investigators

and now focus on who actually committed this crime.

The clock is ticking,

and we still have a homicide suspect somewhere out there.

One of the reasons her death made headlines

is because she was the grandniece

of Halliburton oil founder Erle Halliburton.

played absolutely no role in his mom's murder.

But we got some new information

that adds a whole new level to this investigation.

JUSTIN: For the last two weeks,

I've been by myself

'cause they've been in Malaysia.

I've been watching the house and the dog.

When they were gone, did you have any parties?

Uh, yeah, like, like 20 people.

And was there any discussion about,

"My parents aren't here" or anything like that, or...?

Yeah, well, they knew that my parents weren't home.

Anybody make comments to you about anything in the house?

Like, "Oh, you got a nice house."

Like, that's about it.

KINSEY: Having a house party and having dozens of people

in that residence just days before this murder

complicates the scene to a great extent.

We don't know who his friends are.

Did his friends bring friends? Who's walking around the house?

Did they see something of value that maybe they wanted

to come back and steal?

With all these new persons of interest,

these partygoers,

a new possible scenario starts to formulate.

They could've chosen to come back,

smash in that glass door,

go to Justin's room, retrieve some of his knives

and any other valuables throughout the house.

And then, at some point, were surprised by Jill.

And then, at some point, were surprised by Jill.

There was some sort of struggle. They tried to restrain her.

She tried to escape.

That's where the second knife was dropped

outside of the door.

She was dragged back inside.

She was put into restraints.

She was taken to the bathtub.

And that's where she was eventually killed.

We take DNA from everybody,

But it's gonna take some time to process.

So the easiest way to explain touch DNA

is by thinking about our skin.

So our skin comes off constantly.

We shed a lot, and that has

many cells. Within those cells,

we have the nucleus, and within the nucleus,

we have our nuclear DNA.

And anywhere we touch

a surface or if we embrace

with a hug, my DNA material

is gonna be on you,

and your DNA material is gonna be on me.

So that's where the term "touch DNA."

Because anything we touch will leave a trace.

So we have reached another dead end.

this case would've probably gone cold.

And the one contributor

was one individual that had no reason

to be inside of that residence, and that was

Dayonte Resiles.

KINSEY: Dayonte Resiles was a known burglar

and robber in Broward County and possibly other jurisdictions,

and he is now the number one suspect

and person that we need to apprehend.

serious felonies for a great part of his life.

Dayonte is a professional burglar.

He's been arrested before, starting with

a juvenile burglary at the age of 12.

Some knew him in his community as a Robin Hood of sorts.

He would buy diapers and toiletry and give them out

to the less fortunate people in his neighborhood.

He had been charged with several burglaries in the area,

as well as other upscale neighborhoods.

Uh, generally in the middle of the day,

when people would be out or at work.

Almost always, entry was made the same way.

And he would usually steal whatever he could grab quickly.

He had a method and it worked.

He would disguise himself.

He didn't have any tattoos around his neck.

He kept a neat haircut just so he could fit

in the neighborhood.

KINSEY: There was no indication

that he had committed a homicide prior to this.

But, uh, any robbery is a crime

So he was a very, very dangerous individual.

We now need to find him

After ten days, Dayonte Resiles was

tracked down through his vehicle

on the cars, pinging his phone,

which means we triangulate through phone towers.

was subsequently tracked down

The next day, Dayonte was arrested.

And on the other side of this house would be

And that was the point of entry, we think,

for Resiles, which is his particular M.O.

NAN YAO: After he's captured, yeah, I was very relieved.

Two years later, before the trial start,

I kind of look back and say, "What happened

for last two years of my life?"

It's like a blank.

It feel like I wake up one day and two years gone.

Erased.

I don't have a lot of memory

of what happened.

We are hoping that trial will start and end.

We have this closure, we can move on.

By that time, we have no energy to be joyful with anything.

We're just so tired, exhausted and sad.

Yeah.

But unfortunately, that's not the end of the story at all.

KINSEY: On July 15, 2016...

Dayonte Resiles has been

in jail now for two years awaiting trial.

And on that day, he has a court hearing.

And on that day, he has a court hearing.

He has twins that he's associated with

in the courtroom where the visitor section.

He's seated where the inmates are being sat.

He's seated where the inmates are being sat.

And then quickly, all of a sudden,

he runs towards the door of the courtroom to escape.

The bailiff tries to grab his clothes, but it slips off.

He orchestrates an elaborate escape.

Somehow, he had a handcuff key on his person.

He had another inmate that helped him

loosen up his cuffs and his belly chain.

He had been issued a jumpsuit

that was three sizes too large.

And then he's moved into the courtroom for this hearing.

He has another inmate kind of move forward

to block him from view of any court officers.

And he's just awaiting the signal

from his associates in the visitors' section.

He finally gets that signal,

and now in a shirt and shorts,

he's out the back door.

People are still trying to figure out,

hey, what just happened?

CONCEPTION: Dayonte planned this out.

He built a network of individuals

whose sole intense purpose was to help him escape.

It took over two years for him to plan this,

and he did it with such precision.

He would call other individuals

on an illegally obtained cell phone

while in jail.

He had two of his accomplices

the night before the escape.

And that's how he knew the specific stairwell

And he knew there was going to be a car

waiting for him outside.

We have a guy on the loose

who doesn't want to get taken into custody again,

and he might come back and harm their family,

thinking that they're going to play a role in his prosecution.

This is a dangerous individual

who might have the will to shoot it out with us

because he doesn't want to go back to jail.

after escaping from the Broward County courthouse.

he had the building surrounded with helicopters in the sky,

but Resiles somehow managed to escape.

It was a shocker, and it's like, "What?"

I thought, how could he have escaped?

That was really distressing for the family.

When this guy is loose, I don't feel safe.

Who knows what he's going to do?

We were getting hundreds of tips, hundreds of sightings.

After a six-day manhunt, we finally got a tip

that he was at a hotel in West Palm Beach.

And because he's a homicide suspect

and because we knew that he was possibly armed,

and because we knew that he was possibly armed,

we had to send a SWAT team.

So, officers responded. And on July 20th,

six days after Resiles escaped in 2016,

he was taken into custody.

To the Broward County citizens,

Dayonte Resiles is in custody,

and Broward County in South Florida is a safer place.

Ultimately, eight people were arrested and charged

with aiding and abetting Resiles upon his escape.

to do anything they can to defend the client

That was a very painful period of time.

It was torture.

The only thing I can think, I remember screaming.

NAN YAO: Obviously, he's having

a continuous nightmare at night,

but he wouldn't tell me.

The only thing he'd say sometimes

he'd wake up and just like, "Dad, I can't sleep

"because if I close my eyes,

that Mom's in the bathtub, still will come up."

I did not know that was the beginning

of his very severe PTSD

that he had to go through.

Despite all the trauma we had to go through,

the DNA and the science saved Justin and myself.

KINSEY: The science can't be argued with.

So, this was a death penalty case.

But the jury did have the option

to convict him of manslaughter,

which means he could have been sentenced

up to 15 years in prison.

it's when you mean to harm somebody,

but you don't mean to kill them.

When the judge asked, "What's the verdict?"

they said, "Guilty."

But one juror changed her mind.

He needs to pay the full price.

He should go for murder.

And they called it a mistrial, rightfully so.

NAN YAO: It was a mixed feeling.

On one hand, I feel like, okay,

now we have another chance to convict this guy

for first-degree murder, which he actually deserved.

But on the other hand, I said, "Oh, my God,

"this is going to go dragging on again.

I'm not sure I have energy to prepare for the next trial."

KINSEY: In March of 2022, they hold a retrial,

but they take the death penalty off the table.

It's no longer an option.

INVESTIGATOR: And I swabbed these areas.

HURTADO: Crime scene investigators will testify

on the evidence that they collected.

The results from the swabs, of all of the evidence,

had Dayonte Resiles' DNA on them.

and stabs her repeatedly.

NAN YAO: I want this son of a bitch to die.

I want him to die.

Lethal injection.

But Jill wouldn't do it.

Jill was not the kind of person that...

...would ask anybody to be put in death penalty.

was the fact that we both believed in the survival
