Based on the works of Mór Jókai Screenplay by
I am about to tell you an old tale, and bits of it might have even been true.
The Muslim half-moon that had occupied the skyline of Hungary
was bitten into a tiny crescent by Eugene the invincible.
The last bite of this crescent was none other than Temesvár.
This morsel of a castle was the only thing that was still in the way
of the Emperor to be able to rule over the whole country instead
of the Turkish Sultan.
But this small bite turned out to be hard to swallow,
since the walls were defended by the valiant pasha Ahmed
himself against the Savoyan Lion of the Armies.
Each innocent soul was fleeing from
this war that was raging both in heaven and on earth.
Grabbing their modest belongings,
they all wandered towards more peaceful lands.
The animals of the forests and fields were in flight just as well.
And so did the imps, elves and fairies of the swamps
and groves disappear too, probably for ever...
And then Eugene the invincible gave the order!
And once again... Fire!
Understood! And once again fire!
And once... again... Fire!
Fiiiireee!
Fiiiireee!
Now it's our turn!
Down!
Forward!
Understood! Forward.
Forwaaard!
It is cold!
Cold??? This is unexpected.
Fill Brünnhilde full!
Allah, what a mighty cannon!
Run! Let's go!
Fiiiireee!
It is the valiant Ahmed talking to you, true believers!
Er, hold on, brave soldiers!
Although I am leaving now... help is on its way.
And thus pasha Ahmed and his only baby-daughter,
carrying his most precious treasures, also fled to his dear
friend Gáspár Botsinkay on the secret pathway...
Don't cry, little Sophia!
So I will have to marry such a cry-baby then?!
We don't have too much time left, Gáspár. We must escape!
Heh, escape? Me?
But I am a Hungarian! Nooo.
I am not going anywhere.
But you can hide your treasure here. I will safe-keep it even at the risk
of my life.
When the war will finally get here, and it sure will,
your own head might become loose on your neck too!
The Emperor will never forgive you that you befriended us before.
No way, so many Hungarians befriended your folks!
Aye, but you, my friend, also got quite wealthy in the process.
And that's a graver sin than befriending the Turks.
That might be true... But the castle, the estate!
Listen to me, Gáspár! A mad world is upon us.
My brave soldiers won't hold the castle for too long either.
Life is much more precious: yours and your son's!
Donnerwetter. What did Montecuccoli teach?
If the victory is barred by a dam, blow it up!
Uh huh, the dam! Blow up the dam!
Understood!
Reporting that the dam is set for the purpose of explosion!
Explode it, then!
And now... Charge!
Charge! Charge!
Water's dwindling, we have trouble! Bring some water!
Ali, Yusuf, Mehmed! Bring your buckets!
Quickly!
Begging your pardon...
Nix deutsch! Nur ein Gastarbeiter.
Ohh, the water has flooded the whole area!
Gááspáááár...! Hold the directiooon!
Watch ooout! Waterfall approaching!
Sophia! Dad, help me!
Jónááás! Hold on!
Dad, Sophie was taken by the flood!!
My daughter! After her!
My dear little daughter is lost!
Where are you, little Sophia?!
Don't you see? My daughter!
Sophia!
My little Sophia!
Just do it! Flopsy! Hang on!
Where did you leave your little sisters?
Come, my little one!
You just keep on swimming, Heaven gave you a boat!
What is it, Saffi? Oh.. I can see that now!
Here! Here! Little one!
My tiny one, calm down already!
What is it? Oh my dear!
- So you are the little... - *Saffi!*
Well, if that's how you would like it, so be it. Let your name
be Saffi as well.
We are gonna have two Saffis from now on!
And we will raise them together in good health!
My only baby-daughter!
Keep your faith, my friend! We will find her by daybreak.
Calm down, please.
In Turkey, our new home, no happiness awaited us.
The Sultan beheaded the pasha for Temesvár's fall.
And the death of our sole supporter was soon followed by my own father's.
God be with you, dear son...
I'm compelled to leave you here... in a foreign land.
My time is done.
Become an honest and faithful son of your homeland.
One, who well deserves... the Botsinkay family name.
Defend the weak, give bread to the poor,
a home for the wanderers...
Return to Hungary as soon as you can.
Reclaim our ancient home.
The treasure...
the pasha's treasure...
I was helped out by the goodwill of gypsies,
and so I ended up joining them, sharing the joys
and sorrows of their wandering life.
And thus we roamed the land together.
I owe them, that is, you, my life, and everything I learnt.
But then word got out that the Emperor pardoned every
political immigrant: I can reclaim my home, too,
the place I yearned for all my life so far!
Don't you worry, I won't be ungrateful!
You will always find a home and safe haven on my estate!
Don't you believe them lords, Jónás!..
But I myself is a lord, uncle Gazsi!
Here I have the writ in my satchel: I can legally reclaim
the castle and estate!
- I'll only believe that if I see it! - Well, you will be seeing it.
And you will all be surprised!
Heeey now. Here is the junction! You will surely find your way from here.
Make sure to send word for us, Jónás... Lord Jónás!
Don't leave us, Jónás,come back!
Well, God be with you, Jónás, and good luck.
Well, we made it home, buddy.
I wish my father could have lived to see this day...
First we report to the governor that we wish
to accept the general pardon and reclaim my estate,
and then off we go, to my fabulous castle, and you
into your stable full of fresh straw!
Don't fret, you'll have your own servant who'll feed you from a golden
goblet and a silver bucket! And tomorrow we're to throw
a huge celebration so that everyone will know about
the homecoming of the Lord Jónás Botsinkay!
And then, and then...
We're going to look for pasha's treasure even if the elder ones hid it
at the very bottom of hell!
Uncle Gazsi and the rest will be so surprised!
They will have nothing to worry about until their dying day!
'The arrow of Cupid has right pierced me,
thus my heart will belong to her forever.
To her, I mean to you, my beautiful Venus...
I am dreaming about you even when wide awake.'
Alright, so far so good.
Oh, please accept this gracefully, wondrous Arzéna...
Arzéna...
What the thundering hell rhymes with this Arzéna?
Oh, forgive me, my love!
Stop there! Who are you?
My name is Jónás de genere Botsinka.
I wish to talk to the governor.
Why not to the Heavenly Father himself?!
Now scram, you filthy gypsy kid!
How dare you talk to the Lord Heir of Botsinka like that?!
Hahahaha! The Lord Heir?
Don't make me laugh or I'll miss the target!
Hey now, let me in, valiant Captain, sir! I'll give you an abundant reward!
You? That's enough of your jokes!
- Are you a strong man? - I am!
Then haul your butt away from here! Ein, Zwei!
Ooh! A gold piece!
Heeheehee!
Gee, where's the gold?
Arzéna... Verbena... No, that won't do.
Why aren't you called Gréti or Lizzy?
All the beautiful rhymes I could make up then!..
Lizzy, busy, missy, hissy, dizzy, ooh...
But Arzéna?
This name is just another doing of your miserly father.
He wanted to save on the rhymes, too!
I am honoured to introduce myself, lord governor:
My name is Jónás de Genere Botsinka.
Botsinka... Arzéna... that rhymes!
What, huh? Botsinka?
Jónás Botsinkay, as you can see it stated on this
dog-skin parchment.
Kindly reinstate me into the charge of my rightful inheritance, lord governor!
As the law states, all those who take the option of the Emperor's pardon
until the first of July shall be reinstated
into their lost lands: I hereby wish to take this option!
According to... the law.
- And today is the 30th of June. - Correct.
A single day! A goddamn single day!
Well, come along, you filthy...
I mean, follow me, your grace, Jónás de Genere Botsinka!
De Genere Botsinka...
Listen to me, lad! I mean, take my
fatherly advice, your grace! Never mind that forsaken estate!
The war has pretty much destroyed it anyway,
all your lands are just barren swamps now,
producing little more than mosquitoes and swamp fever!
I will rebuild everything! Ain't scared of labour myself.
Still, the Imperial Treasury, as a sign of goodwill towards
the returning ex-patriots, hereby offers you in return
of the estate, fifty... er, a hundred gold pieces!
Think about it, dear friend! A hundred shiny gold pieces!
Thank you very much for your kindness, lord governor,
but there's no way I'll just sell off the land of my ancestors.
Two hundred gold pieces!
I do hope that I can greet you in my castle as my
paternal good friend, in the meantime,
kindly keep me in your remembrance...
Au Revoir!
Two hundred and eleven... seventeen...
and thirty-eight farthings!
That is all, it's all over...
That is all, it's all over...
Puzzolaaaa!
Where the hell were you loitering?
You know that you can only leave the tower with my permission!
Oh, well, si... maestro. I was just mixing a new elixir.
And I was checking upon the excavations earlier.
The research is progressing greatly!
Have you found the pasha's treasure?! Bravo, Puzzola!
We are saved!
This is yours for the good news. We have the treasure at last!
Yeah, yeah, si, si!
We have the treasure, I just don't know where.
Say what?!
I didn't know it is that urgent.
You didn't know, huh?! You are killing me, brigand!
But before that, I'll have your head up on a spear!
But what happened, my lord?
I had taken a thousand gold pieces from the Imperial Treasury,
and I also owe the soldiers six month's worth of wages...
And almost the same amount to that old pig Loncsár.
But if he'll add double interest rates, then I owe him twice the amount.
The Court's Inspector could be here any minute...
and now the devil brought here this
gypsy kid as well, called Popsin,
or Pachnin...
Ooh, don't you mean Botsinkay?!
Stop act surprised, or else I'll have you quartered!
The damn rascal has just left. If he would've come but a single day later...
Then his estate would've been given to the Crown, under our
supervision, meanwhile we could've found the pasha's treasure!
Then I could've paid back everybody, and even purchase
the title of a Baron for myself, without which
my Arzéna will never offer me her pretty hands full of her rich dowry!
Oh, thundering thunderbolts!
- And? And?.. - What 'and'?
Stop enquiring me or else I'll shoot you from a cannon!
Um, did you then happen to make the enormous mistake of
reinstating that Botsinkay kid into his estate?
Well, what the hell could I do if it was already
declared so by that cursed law?
Ooh, Madonna mia pericoloso la mobile, quanta costa...
Ooh, why did I not think of this before! Damn it!
Because whoever doesn't exist anymore, cannot be reinstated,
meaning nobody would have looked for him, thus it was a thoughtless thing
to let him go, my lord.
And you are telling this to me now, you brigand??
Ah si, but better late then never.
The chap must be strolling in the swamps by now.
Then you will stalk after him and stab him quietly!
No, nononono. I am an intellectual!
Forgery, poisons, money laundering, film critiques,
these sorts, I do. But murder? No can do!
I can't stand seeing blood.
What did you promise me two years ago in Bologna, when I saved you
from execution?
Argh, is it already two years? How time flies...
A soldier lasts for that long.
You swore to me that you will blindly follow all of my orders from then on!
Will I have to poke your eyes out?
Gosh, no, no, my lord, there's no need for that!
Then get out and take care of this!
I just don't know what my... mama will say about this.
I don't understand. I could see it with my own eyes that he put it in.
It is nowhere.
My father told me back then that on the way from Temesvár
one spots the castle for the first time from
that hill with the old willow-tree on its top!
This must be the one!
I can't see any other tree around here.
Hey, Djinn, listen: let's close our eyes
and only open them upon the hill, okay?
Now!
Well, now you are really beautiful, Fluffy!
You know what? Race you to the log!
Off we go!
I won! I won!
Fluffy, Fluffy...
Where are you, Fluffy?
Oh, you cheated!
Just wait, you rascal! Yes indeed, you cheated!
Thank you, Fluffy! This is really beautiful.
Oh!
Tóbiás!
Come on, Fluffy!
Shame on you! What kind of behaviour is this?
Just give it back! Alright, I don't mind.
For once, I forgive you.
But if you'll act jealous again, I won't talk to you for a whole week!
Oh, you're here as well?
Pi-pi-pi-pi!
Bendegúz!
All right, Bendegúz. Here, don't you miss it!
A stranger! Flee, Fluffy!
Saffi! Saffi! Come on, let's hide! A stranger!
See this, buddy? They were surely searching for the treasure here.
They might have even found it...
No, that can't be.
The lord governor would've told me that for sure.
Don't you give me that look! He's a noble-hearted gentleman.
He addressed me as: 'my dear friend.'
He recognized the fellow nobleman in me!
Just come right in, we are at home after all.
Well, this must've been the dining room.
Or the library.
This house is a bit windy...
Where are we supposed to sleep in here?
What the heck? Are we not alone?
All right, it's only you!
Easy for you, you can sleep hanging from timbers!
This must have been the kitchen.
There's no way we can have supper here tonight!
I tricked you, Djinn...
There is no golden trough here, nor silver bucket.
Believe me, this is not how I pictured my homecoming.
Let's just find a nook for tonight, and tomorrow
we'll press on to reach the caravan.
I will be the laughing stock of everybody...
Shining noble castle, an army of greeting servants, a designated handler
for you... poor Djinn.
Let's go before the whole place collapses upon us!
Yet there's one more thing I am looking for.
You see, Djinn: she was my mother.
What am I to do with this lonely gold piece?
It's counterfeit too!
I should've listened to the lord governor instead.
Castle, estate: the whole shebang is worthless!
But we can stay friends though, can't we?
Basti di porcoviderci allegro molto vivace...
Suppose we discover the pasha's treasure, unless it's just an old
wives' tale...
Even if it exists, by the time I find it on my own,
I'm starved to death and that's it!
Djinn, do you smell it? Smoke!
There is a fire close by, and perhaps supper on it!
And if there's supper, they would surely invite the lord of Botsinka,
right, buddy?
Perhaps it's one of the remaining serfs of my father?
Buddy, serve yourself one last time, will you?
A pleasant good evening to all of you folks!
Damn it!
May all good souls praise the Lord!
Black cat, bird of death, toad?
This must be the hut of some sort of a swamp witch!
Well, was I right?
It seems you're the lord of the house.
And I am the lord of the estate: Jónás Botsinkay, in person.
Jónás... So he's returned after all!
Lookey here, we have a guest!
Welcome, little lord, to the humble abode of the lonesome,
penniless Cafrinka.
Good evening, old lady, err...
Don't you fret, you will make your home here too!
It must've been a hunter that killed her mother.
Good madame, my name is Jónás de Genere Botsinka.
This entire estate is basically my...
I know, my dearest, my dream told me you'd come.
So are we hungry then?
Well, I'm not gonna lie...
I know, my little bird. You're starving for two days.
Shoo, shoo, Saffi!
Envious souls won't get their supper here!
Children, supper is here.
So many tasty bites, don't leave any for the mites!
So once again, I'm the local estate owner!
Saffi! Where're you hiding? Set the table for the starving vagabond!
At least she didn't call me a beggar this time...
Magic! Witchcraft!
She was a cat just a moment ago!
Jónás, take heed lest you'll be spirited away here.
Hurry up, my little bird! You can gawk at him later on.
Bring us some water from the spring!
Yes, mommy!
This absent-minded girl forgot about the plates...
Gee, Saffi! Saffi...
Promptly drop that fish back in the water!
Shoo! Shoo!
Now she turned into a cat again!
Now she is again a girl. 'Shoo'?
That must be the magic word! Yet she is so beautiful...
Saffi, you sit next to our guest.
What about lighting then?
Candle with a hundred flames, give light, my firefly babes!
You serve our guest.
Plate, plate, a full plate, scoop it up, my dear mate!
Consume it with good appetite, Jónás!
Easy, Jónás...
What now, well I'll be... Hey! Jónás, you!
Well, time just flew away, little lord.
You too have grown up, yet I still remember
that you were just a wee brat when your dad had saved you from misery.
My poor father died while in hiding.
I was taken in by gypsies.
I was hoping I can show my gratitude towards them, but instead
of a shining castle and an army of servants, I was greeted only by ruins
and decay.
What a bitter homecoming it was!
I only have a single ray of hope left...
I know, my son, I know.
You know a lot about me, old lady. Were you one of our servants maybe?
Just my own, and it'll stay that way forever.
Borbála!
- So you have servants of your own as I see. - Hmm, we serve one another
in this place.
We nurture, protect, look after each other, like good siblings.
Know this, little lord: a soul that governs itself
is never in need of external servants.
Those are a beggar's thoughts, lady!
I surely will have my army of servants, just wait
till I find the pasha's treasure!
Sonny, you don't know a thing about real treasures.
Sure I do! Glittering gold and sparkling diamonds.
That's just mud and pebbles.
Real treasure is worth more than gold and diamond!
Seems to me that you must still do a lot of stupid deeds
in the future to wisen up, little lord!
Well, if you're such a clairvoyant, do tell me
where I can find the treasure! And will I indeed find it?
If you're a witch, you must be good at foretelling things!
Thank you for the honour. Show me your palm then.
Uh huh!
It is written here that luck will be your friend lest you opt to deny her!
And that you'll flee from one house, and find a wife in the next!
Find a wife?!
Indeed.
That may be, but I won't marry any old cat.
Foretell me this: will I discover the treasure?
You sure will! Your wife will help you discover it,
on the day of your wedding!
Well then, I'll make sure to get married tomorrow!
Oooh!
I'll go looking for a bride in the morning, but I'll double-check
each house that I enter...
Lady, if what you say is true, you'll get your reward!
And make sure to prepare a room in my castle for my wife tomorrow!
As you wish, little lord!
Do not misbehave! Shoo!
Alright then,
I feel like going to sleep now...
Shoo!
Bravo, Puzzola, all is clear now...
We get a bride for the kid, he finds the treasure, then... croak!
We'll own those bucketloads of gold, then I'll murder
the knight, then it's Loncsár's turn...
Aaaah, corpo d vacco! All that work...
Jónás, you sleep outside! Saffi, go to your spot.
Pleasant dreams, little lord. Meeeow!
Good night. No, don't exert yourself.
I'll rather sleep outside, it's cramped in here.
And thank for the supper, ummmmm....
Next time with the rest.
These children are so foolish, right, Saffi?
But we'll take good care of them, okay?
Where's that worm Puzzola loitering for this long?
Did he kill that kid, or did the kid kill him?
If the kid killed him, I'll kill the kid back!
If he didn't kill him, I'll kill both of them... Ehh!
I'll kill everyone and that's it!
- Sergeant! - Yes sir!
Have you seen Puzzola anywhere? And if not, where?
I beg to report, I haven't seen him anywhere all day!
Ehh! My rifle! And my horse!
No, a boat! I'm going on a hunt.
Now? In the middle of the darkest night?
Now!! Dismissed!
Hahaha! I'll kill everyone!
That's the safest way.
Well, God bless you, old lady. We'll be back in the evening.
And don't forget about the room in my castle.
It'll be done, little lord! As you commanded.
And convey my greetings to your cat.
I'll tell her.
- Is he gone? - He is.
Did you eat a bitter pear for breakfast?
Won't he ever return?
Ever? You heard him: he'll be back in the evening along with his bride.
I'll have killed myself by then anyway in the lake!
Fluffy and Tóbiás will pull you out by your hair!
Hey now, will you be sobbing all day long?
I was waiting for him in vain, he's not choosing me!
The thoughtless boy will get what's coming to him!
And he will surely get it from someone.
Help him, sweet Cafrinka.
That's what I'm doing as we speak!
Where he's asking for something he'll not get,
he'll get something he does not want!
Let him pursue after fellow noble sorts...
I no longer care, just make sure he's okay...
You fell for him so hard then?
He's a fine lad for sure, just like his father was.
He took me for a cat, shooed me away!
You deserved it, why did you let him?
Was I supposed to jump on top of him?
Enough of your sobbing!
The laddie is green enough, but he'll wisen up soon.
Mommy... could you... bewitch him perhaps?
Love took your wits away!
Look at these two fools!
This is your witchcraft right here!
Look in the lake to be sure!
Bewitch him, my eye!
Saffi, you go after him and won't
leave him for a single minute, understand?
Run along then!
I beg to report: right, I mean, left, errr... ducks from that direction!
I beg ro report, geese from over there!
We're staking out for a different game, sonny...
Egrets?
Ack, Saffi, little lady, stop doing that!
Load!
- A water monster! - What?
It's coming here! Aaaaaaaah!
Your excellency....
Puzzola?!
You should be ashamed for running after men!
And there's no use in changing yourself back
to a cat, it's still a wrong thing to do it!
Saffi! Shoo!
Indeed, it sounded like a gunshot just now.
But who dares to go hunting on my estate?
You let the kid flee, you!!
Your excellency, I did it so that he, errr....
He will spill the big secret!
- The treasure... - Where's the treasure?..
In a safe place! Luckily he doesn't yet know where.
Say what?!
That swamp hag has foretold fo him that his wife
shall have a dream about the location!
He doesn't even have a wife!
That's why we need to get him married pronto, alive or dead!
Caution, he's coming...
I'm pleading you for the sake of the Crooked Virgin
of Pisa, trust me on this, your excellency!
But how shall we dig up a woman for him?
There are no decent maids within a 100 mile radius,
as all of them were hauled away during the war.
And the ones who were left behind...
We still got one.
What do you want with that valve?
I am not angered!
But you'll be, your excellency, you'll be!
Fie, lord governor, what a thing to do: to go hunting on someone else's estate!
Oooh, the Lord Knight is asking for your kind pardon, sir!
If I'm not mistaken, we're honoured by
the presence of the young lord Jónás Botsinkay!
That's right!
Well, we simply got lost in this mighty swamp.
We just gave an alarm shot when you showed up,
praised be the Mighty Madonna, and now
we can safely find our way out of here.
You are promptly pardoned, dear lord governor,
and I hereby allow you to go hunting on my estate
if and when you're inclined to do so.
Grazie! Thank you, your excellency!
Now that good fortune has made our paths cross,
let me ask for your advice.
I plan to marry: where could I find a fitting, pretty,
noble bride for myself?
A beautiful noble bride, complete with a major dowry...
What do I care about a dowry?
I'll be dead rich anyway on the day of my wedding!
Of course! Oh how foolish I am...
I forgot that your lordship was in hiding till now,
so you couldn't catch news about the most eligible,
beautiful daughter of the wealthiest landowner
of these parts: Arzéna Loncsár!
Arzéna Loncsár?
I will pay this girl a visit right away.
Just go straight that way and you'll end up at
the Loncsár homestead, sir.
The smell will make it easy to locate.
You two will obviously be invited to our wedding!
Alright, press on, Djinn!
Hey!
What did you just do, you sorry brigand?
I had no choice, your excellency!
Mademoiselle Arzéna is the only single maiden in the lands!
But I'm the one who wants to marry her, you wretch!
You want to, your excellency you want to!
But you can't, since Arzéna is only open to Barons!
Your knightship needs to first secure the treasure so that
you can purchase a Baron's title, but you can only
procure the treasure if Arzéna has a dream about
the secret location and tells it to the kid...
We dig up the treasure then and dig in the kid on the spot,
eh, va bene!
Your excellency will seize the treasure officially
for the Crown, lest it disappears again...
You'll pay back your debts, send a part to the Treasury,
for which you will be entitled as a Baron.
At that point, as a rich nobleman, you'll propose
to Arzéna who will be happy to marry you, and you proceed
to console the grieving widow.
As both of you are finally happy at that point,
you proceed to reward richly your humble servant Puzzola,
and you let him go, ecco,
eccola, see, your excellency?
All I see is that if your plan fails, you'll beg me
to send you back in the Bologna torture chambers!
Júdás de gedere Botshonka!
Botsinka?? The neighbor?
The devil brought you, little lord!
Hey, painter! How dare you mistreat Yorkshire's lord?
Come now, laddie, come on...
Let's look at what this hack has painted for us...
This smile is silly! Fix it!
No, no, not mine! The Mother Emperor's...
You, you talentless hack! Scram!
Little lord... kiss, kiss.
So the general pardon has lured you home, huh?
I don't mean to hurt you...
but you're right scrawny...
No problem, old Loncsár will feed you fat.
To the trough, buddy, drinking time!
No, thank you, brandy is not my thing.
That dog won't hunt, little lord!
You really need to booze at papa Loncsár's, heheh.
Clink with me... or do you frown at mere pig-herders?
Me? Hell no! In fact, I've come here because I...
Alright then! Cheers!
Drink up!
This one to my health!
Drink up!
This one to our friendship...
Drink up!
Remain seated, buddy,
that'll do your legs good.
And now, kindly tell me, how did you end up here?
I, ummm.... Hick!
Well, I intend to marry... I want your...
I mean your daughter... wife...
Aaaaaah!.. So you'd like to have Arzéna!
Very decent indeed, decent, decent.
Does lord governor know about your noble intention?
He does! Hick! He does, he... off... offered her!
That evil bastard Puzzola must be involved in this...
What... what did you say?
No, no, nothing, nothing...
Do you have enough money then?
Would you be able to keep my spoiled daughter well?
I have! Hick. I have!
I own the treasure's pasha!
Huh, huh? Did you discover the pasha's treasure? Where?
On my palm.
It's written thus: it is foretold by the good lich...
witch... good witch...
Haha... So after all it is hidden on your estate,
so it is yours and it's bound to be uncovered...
Achille!
Lead the little lord... wait, wait, wait.
I'd rather announce him to little Arzéna myself,
telling her that a new suitor is here to see her...
Lead the little lord into the bacon... I mean salon!
Yes sir. This way if you will.
I don't get it...
Why didn't the governor stab this kid to death?
Though if Arzéna would marry him...
I'll own both the treasure and the estate...
Be smart now, Loncsár! Be smart now, Loncsár!
What, what's that? The piglets are being skinned alive?
Mademoiselle Arzéna is having a singing lesson.
She must have a very strong throw... throw... throat.
Ooooh, I can't take this! This is horrendous!
Bravo, bravo!
You may leave, the caterwaul is over for today!
But my father, how rude a tone that is in this sanctum of muses?
Fine, fine, put on your makeup quick, daughter, you have a suitor coming!
You're forgetting your manners, father: address me with more respect.
Is it that vulgar unwashed person
again who cannot tell
a sonata from 'so natty'?
Nope, it's not the knight!
It's a full-blooded young nobleman!
And if you do love your uncouth old daddy...
Fi donce! How many times do you force me to warn you about your manners...
Fine, fine, all right: so if your majestic
highness does love her own dear father...
Well obviously, since I'm obliged to do so.
Well then! Kindly receive that chap with the utmost
hospitality then...
I'm not sure, father, as I've offered my soul to Apollo already...
Apollo... haven't even heard of this guy.
Who's that rogue? Is he wealthy at least?
But father! He is the god of muses and poetry in Greek mythology.
Stop yanking it, you beast, or I'll kick you in the tenderloin!
Heh heh heh, my blood... Everything'll turn out fine.
Júdás de gedere Botshonka!
Enter...
Good evening. Hick! Arzéna dear, I mean...
I wanna ask for your...
This is unheard of...
This is no laughingstock, sir! I invite you to a duel!
Where's my sword?
- Where's my sword? - What an entertaining fellow you are, sir...
Still, marriage is a serious business.
As sung about by the Latin poet Suscrofa.
It is required that its participants be matched
both by wealth and titles.
The family tree of the Loncsárs of Baconhampton only allows noblemen
to enter as suitors, thus it is my utmost intention that I allow
nothing less than a Baron to marry me! A Baron, I said!
Huh, a Baron?.. Well, I'm no Baron!
Then hurry up because unless you become one,
you'll find the gates of my heart shut tight!
And now, fare thee well...
But sir, what kind of an interference this is?!
Bonjouuuuur! Nice birrrrrd!
Help me!!
Mademoiselle, stop this, or I'll skin you alive!
He wants to skin me! Help me!
No, not you, my lady, the other cat!
Stop there, you blackguard!
Gosh, gosh, my precious gadgets!
Saffi! Your mother!
He's gone rabid! Aaaaaah!
I can't take this, I can't take this!
My altar napkin! Put it down, I'm not done with it!
I just... I'm about to... make him jump off the...
Bonjouuuuuuur! Nice birrrrrrd!
God, I'm about to swoon...
Get me smelling salt...
Achille!
Mademoiselle: your tea!
Gee, your sacred... the rascal... oh...
Achille... you bastard...
Achille! The gentleman wishes to... leave...
Ah... Lord be with you, mademoiselle.
Don't you worry a bit. I shall return...
As a Baron.
Au revoir!
My little piglet! How did you like the suitor?
The devil take me if I drink ever again...
That's a naughty thing to do, lady.
To behave like that in a noble house!
But that bird, heh heh! Alright, come here.
Let's just go, Saffi.
Ow, my head!
Djinn, Djinn, my dear horsey.
Oh, my apologies. May I, mademoiselle?
Come on, buddy.
The boy is not to Arzéna's liking...
Meaning that we need to off him very soon...
So first I need to become a Baron, otherwise I'll
get no wife: I'd surely receive that title from
the Emperor if I gave him half of the pasha's
treasure, but I can only get to that if I marry!
And here I am again at the start of the vicious circle.
What if I found a wife who doesn't care about a fancy Baron's title?
Saffi! Evil girl, leave that bird alone!
Carry it here at once!
Poor little pigeon...
This little devil almost devoured you.
Change back for my sake, okay? Shoo!
Shoo-hoo!
It seems you won't listen to me. No problem.
What is this? 'To the hands of the knight Feuerstein'...
The knight! My paternal good friend!
He'll give me advices on how to become a Baron!
Fly straight home, dear pigeon, fly home,
I'll hand over this letter in person!
I don't get it, don't see it, I'm blinded, witchcraft...
I don't understand.
My dear Arzéna...
Watch out, maestro! It's still wet!
Thundering hell! Oh, how marvellous!
Indeed, a masterpiece indeed!
The painter asked 10 gold pieces for it.
What? For this wretched piece?
Of course he never received a dime!
Now you're talking! And am I supposed to let this shiny diamond...
to become the wife of that gypsy rogue?
Your excellency will merely lease her to him!
Kindly keep on focusing on the interest rate resulted
by way of this leasing.
This is much like amputation:
it does hurt while the doctor is sawing it away, but the patient is
free of a leg afterwards.
It would still be simpler to murder him, always works.
Ahh, but only if Arzéna agrees to marry him, or if she
rejects him for good!
Enter!
I beg to report, some gypsy sort wishes to enter
in order to hand you an important letter in person!
- This is him... - He walked into the trap.
This must be divine providence.
Be tricky about it, your excellency!
If you simply stab him dead, that will warrant an imperial investigation!
At your service, lord governor!
First of all I'd like to thank you for the advice.
It all worked out in a splendid way!
Say what?? You're dying now!
Lord governor means that he's dying to hear about
your story in detail!
If I may be bold to ask, what's that valve there?
That's a trifle, just a little head-venting
valve in case pressure is mounting!
It was devised by army doctors when his excellency
was injured by a Turkish cannonball on the head.
Enough talk!
Lord governor means that enough talk.
You mean Mademoiselle Arzéna whispered 'yes'?
Not explicitly, but she didn't utter 'no' either.
She said that she's only willing to say yes
to a Baron, thus I've decided to become a Baron!
Baron! You'll be dead before you...
Hey now! Lord governor means that you'll become
a Baron much before you'll die of old age!
Many thanks to lord governor! And how to do that?
Ahh, now for the trickery...
So simple! You sir shall pass the Baron's exam
right here in front of lord governor!
- Will you undertake it? - With pleasure.
Splendid!
Afterwards you just need to write a letter the Emperor.
The letter! I almost forgot. Here you are.
'The boy is not to Arzéna's liking, We need to off him soon enough. Loncsár'
Me? Off me??
How do you know what this letter contains?!
You just read it aloud!
Oh, alright. I'm allowed to read it for I'm the confidante of lord governor.
Be honest, sir: did you break the seal or not?
I didn't break it.
But let me ask a question too.
- Who does this painting depict? - Don't you recognise her?
Haha, but you saw Arzéna in person, sir!
Or did you lie to us?
Heavens! It appears that the booze took my sight away.
Gentlemen, I hereby announce that I withdraw my intention
to marry Mademoiselle Arzéna.
Bravooo! Bravo.
We must drink to that...
And that will be your first exam indeed.
The exam of masculinity!
Prove it, sir, that you're a man! Drink up!
If that's a prerequisite to baronhood, then I withdraw from that too.
Drink up or I'm gonna pierce you clean through!
Don't stab him, think of the investigation!
The poison will show the signs of a stroke.
Such an excellent poison! I wish there was more of it.
But I do have more swords!
But how did I harm you gentlemen?!
Foolish talk! This is merely the second exam, that of valiance!
You will now perform a duel with lord governor.
That's trickery...
Gross injustice! I don't even have a sword!
The applicant's supposed to arm themselves!
Now you got one, you filth!
No one can tell me after you die that I killed you while unarmed!
Behold a fine example of knightly honour!
En garde!!
You die here, kid...
Because I want the pasha's treasure for myself!
He's hardy like a worm!
Hah, I could've killed you back in the swamp,
but this brigand was fussing about it!
First I kill you, then I torture the swamp hag to spill me the hiding
place of the treasure, then I burn her with her daughter on a stake!
Hear this, Saffi?! Escape!
Keep jumping around, you rogue, this is the end!
I'm gonna find the treasure, I'll buy a baronhood off it,
then I'll win the hand of my wondrous Arzéna!
Arzéna!!
I'll cut you in four pieces for this, aaaaah!
You blackguard, you wretched gypsy!
Aaaah!
Thanks, Saffi, you did good there!
Our fortunes have reversed, governor!
Did I thus pass the exam of valiance?
You did! With flying colors.
Then you promptly write down your wrongdoings to
the Emperor and proceed to get off the neighborhood,
otherwise I shall remove your tapped head!
Hoho, first let's see the exam of bravery!
Puzzola!
Heheh, I sent him down for a visit into the bear's pit!
I should sculpt a golden statue of your likeness!
I nearly thought that chap would ashame me!
At least Goliath can have a lunch now.
The poor soul has been starving for a week!
Drink up, Puzzola! You've earned it.
Could I receive some cash instead?
Sure, you could.
Once you uncover the treasure for me, I'll fill you up with gold
and grant you your freedom as well, so help me God!
Mille grazie, your wretched excellency...
Saffi, my sweet kitten...
You even followed me here, brave and smart girl...
Even though there's no escape from this spot...
This is the end of the road for us, a brigand leader ends up murdering us!
'Lord governor', 'noble knight'!
How damned foolish I was to believe him.
- Silence! - It's silent down there...
I'm sure he's still just sniffing and tasting him...
I could've surmised that your mother changed you
into a cat in order to save me from the governor's hand.
Gosh, if I could be free just one more time...
I wouldn't want no treasure, no titles, just, just you...
We could've lived in peace, merrily in our little hut.
Your mother! The knight intends to burn her too!
Saffi, escape, try to get there somehow...
It's too late!
Ecco! He's being skinned, your excellency, heehee!
Don't be afraid, Saffi, we won't die easily!
I'll attempt to hold him up, in the meanwhile you
run all the way to your mother, and flee, flee!
Come on! Come on, you worm, if you want me!
Lookey here, Jónás himself!
How come you happen to be loitering here?!
Am I being bewitched by the witch as well?
Can I speak the bears' language?
Hah hah, only that of gypsy bears!
Menyus, my dear Menyus! I can't believe this!
How did you hide into this gigantic furball?
Well, the governor had it declared that he's looking
for a bear herder: no one amongst his soldiers dared
to apply, and since I had my share of bear dancing
on local fairs, I gave it a try!
My dear Menyus, my dear Menyus!
I'm so happy to see you, I'm gonna shed my own skin!
Shed it, do that.
Everything could've worked out fine, but that roguish
governor had cheated me out of wage, and even that of the bear!
I would've starved to death, but I traded places with
the good bear!
How'd you manage to do that?
Well, he entered me, meaning I ate him, and as you see,
I entered his hide then so that I could receive
his wage, but there's neither bear nor wage to be found for a week now...
I was just pondering about how to vacate the scene.
So is it possible to get out of this pit?
For sure it's possible, since I have the key!
But listen: how come you ended up here, along with a cat?
She's no cat, she's Saffi, my bride!
That's heavy, it must be witchcraft!
It sure is. I'll relate it all to you, let's just get out of
here first, as the governor wants us dead for the pasha's treasure!
Don't you fret, brother, all three of us will make it!
Listen here!
Ahhhh!
Get down there, check what's left of the chap!
Then tidy up and hurl it in the swamp.
Meee?
Who else? Do you want to involve the whole army?!
Menyhért!
Where's that ugly gypsy loitering about?
Hey, you! Where're you taking Goliath?
I just wish to take the poor soul for a walk out there.
Take him! But be here within an hour or
you'll be sorry indeed!
Yes, dear Sergeant, sir!
Menyhért! Menyhért!
Are you asleep, you wretch?
Where the hell can he be?
Aaaah!
He's not there, they're gone!
Sergeant! Have you seen Menyhért anywhere?
And if I have, what's it to you?
I allowed him to take the bear for a stroll.
Did they have a cat tagging along?
Just a little black one.
Aaaah!
The bloodhounds! Let loose the bloodhounds!
They spotted us, dash to the back wall!
Halt!
Goooliath! Ooh!
I can't take this... the hide's too heavy!
This way!
Get 'em!
Devour them!
Quickly, this way! Come on already!
I can't take this!
Drop that wretched hide!
Saffi, I'm coming!!
Have you gone mad?
Don't you get it? She's my bride, Saffi!
The black cat!
Aiutooooooo!
Let me go, I need to return!
Snap out of it! It's about our lives!
But Saffi!
Don't you fear for that cat, I mean girl,
she'll fool the dogs easily enough, and she'll make it home before you do!
Home? The old lady!!
These blackguards intend to burn down her hut,
I need to warn her!
She'll just hide in the swamp, stop acting rabid, Jónás!
We'll steal two horses from the soldiers
and off we go: we make it through the border and they'll never find us again!
No, I can't do that!
You just flee onward, Menyus, God bless you and thanks
for saving our hides... run now!
Oh no!
- Run, my Menyus! - Jónás! This is no way to do this!
Ahh, Madonna, ohh...
Whatever happened to you?
Oh Gosh, maestro... the cats... the dog...
the bear... the bear...
What are you going on about now?
The chap... ow, ow, ow... The dog and the cat, ow...
Sergeant!
At your command!
What on earth is that thing in your hand?
I beg to report, it seems to be Goliath's hide!
Say what?? And where's his herder, that gypsy?
He took Goliath for a walk.
Without his hide??
Well sir... it's hot out there, and I thought...
Last time I saw him, he still had his hide on!
If you wish that your hide stay on you, you will
fetch them for me within an hour!
Bring the soldiers!
I'm sure that gypsy fled towards the border!
Yes, sir!
Botsinkay... that filthy kid... Ahhh! He escaped!.. Ow.
What are you talking about?? My horse!
Lady! Heeey, lady!
Greetings to the little lord!
Where did you leave the young lady?
Run, flee at once, lady!
The governor wants to burn you!
- Did Saffi make it home? - Which Saffi?
Are you fooling around with me when we're in
immediate mortal danger?!
- Your daughter! - Oh I have no daughter.
I just have this little wandering cat...
Saffi, my dear kitten, are you alive then?
Dear lady, I beseech you, grant me Saffi as my wife.
Won't you pick a noble lady after all?
I don't want anyone else in the world but her!
If you insist so much, be happy, you two!
But then what shall I do with this other one?
Saffi...
Jónás...
- Witchcraft again?.. - Your foolishness again!
There's no witchcraft, I have two Saffis!
I mean she's not really Saffi, she's Sophia!
The sole daughter of pasha Mehmed, waiting for so long
for her Jónás to find her and marry her,
as it was decided by your fathers.
She'll always remain Saffi
to me, my little cat bride!
Where did lord governor head?
Get lost, you rat eater!
Can't you see I'm in charge?
Aaaah, this is for you, if you tell me where his excellency is headed.
That way... towards the Botsinkay estate.
Oooh! You're a decent fellow, I'll remember you!
Voila!
What the...! Can't find it! Mein Gott, I'm blinded!
I can't see it, I don't get it, where's the gold?
Mein Gott!
So this is that famous treasure!
Saffi's dowry...
And now it's yours.
Take your dirty hand off it, filth!
Golly, Jónás, we're lost!
This is the moment I've been waiting for a while...
You waited in vain, sir, according to the law the treasure belongs to us!
Yes, it belongs to us!
Hahahah, the law?! This is the law in my hand.
All three of you will die, and the treasure...
Owwww...
Puzzola! You made it just in time!
Of course I did...
Puzzola is always on time.
Do not move!!
Carry the treasure right into my boat, and then...
Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow...
In the end we thought we'll come to help out after all, my Jónás!
Menyus! Uncle Gazsi!
There's no way you could hold a wedding celebration without us, anyway!
All is well if it ends well.
They settled on the Botsinkay estate,
the castle was rebuilt, along with the other houses...
And naturally the evil ones were punished according
to their wrongdoings, as is customary in tales...
The knight was dismissed as a governor due to his ill health.
He kept working under Loncsár till the end of his life in order to pay
back his huge debt...
And Puzzola was taken back to the Bologna dungeon
where he was awaited with much affection...
Gooooosh, my momma! This really hurts!
No problem, Giuseppe...
You hurt my maternal heart bad enough as well...
Soon, the little lord Jónás could love three Saffis.
And he finally understood what the prophecy meant:
you shall discover the real treasure!
