I was literally doing my runs,

be hesitant when I tour again.

Looking back, I now realize I had my whole family with me my entire career.

You know, traveling in the van, showing up at the competitions,

always being there for the ups and downs, and then...

You know, I kind of left the family behind to go do my thing.

And at a certain point, I just, like...

I needed that back in my life.

I was rebuilding that family support.

[laughing]

[Toby] He just became a happier snowboarder, and I think he--

I think he honestly just found new love for the sport.

doesn't show up in Austria and rip like he's doing right now.

He's just that determined.

Every single moment from basically two years ago

all the way up to this point has been...

...just the craziest journey.

My liver's bleeding, my face got ripped open,

there's just, you know, hundred...

[sighing] Fuck, I don't know.

This is stupid, I'm over it.

[Esther] We chased the weather, we chased a good pipe,

constantly switching homes and going to a different mountain.

You know, just trying to keep him motivated

and anything would just throw him off for that day.

[Shaun] Now that I had made the Olympic team,

it was all about this window of time before the Olympics

to get the trick that I hadn't done yet.

And I'd promised myself after the crash

that I wouldn't do the trick until the conditions were perfect.

And...

...every step of the way,

we were running into these problems.

We'd fly out and the machine that cut the halfpipe broke.

So we're like, "Let's go to Canada."

We'd fly to Canada, we'd get there,

storm blows in.

Hi, ah!

[Esther] He'd come back to the house and be like,

"Fuck! I didn't do the trick again," you know?

And he'd... he'd be so frustrated.

[sighing] Losing my mind at this house.

So, like, amped up to compete.

It's just like, I start spinning and go crazy.

When I'm on my board,

I'm excited, I'm happy,

and I'm like, feeling motivated, you know?

It's just like that downtime is just so hard.

Sitting here kind of like...

...going over and over everything in my mind,

and there's, like, nothing I can do about it, you know?

Have a lot of things on your plate, trying to...

...put those aside and just go to sleep is... is a huge challenge.

["Iron Man" playing]

[announcer on TV] Shaun White gets it going!

Oh, my goodness!

White comes in with heavy contact!

[Shaun] I was in a full, just, meltdown.

* I am Iron Man *

[Shaun] I... I locked myself in my room,

I closed all the window shades,

and I was just, like, sitting there in the corner, just like...

[gasping intensely]

[chuckling] ...stirring!

Because I'd had this nightmare,

this reoccurring nightmare ever since...

It was like the day after Sochi,

I just kept having these nightmares

where... and it was always the same,

it was that I...

It was the next day, was the next Olympics,

which would be the Korean Olympics.

And somehow for some reason they fast-forwarded four years

and it was tomorrow, and I'm there

at this competition, completely unprepared.

And I'm sitting there going, "Wow, I'm about to lose the Olympics again."

This was, like, haunting me, and now I'm sitting here, like,

"Oh, my God! Like, this is happening for real, real life!"

And I just had a full breakdown,

I... I didn't want to talk to JJ,

didn't want to talk to Toby, I was just like, "It's over, what do we do?"

And they helped me come out of that situation

by having me watch this commercial.

* Has he lost his mind *

* Can he see or is he blind? *

* Can he walk at all *

[Shaun] I remember watching it and being like, "Oh, my God."

This is who I am in this commercial,

like I'm expected to do it, I'm gonna... you know what I mean?

Who is this scared person that's afraid to like...

...you know, step to this challenge?

And I just told myself, if I'm gonna get this trick,

it'll just have to be in Korea.

Heading to Korea, super exciting.

We got, uh, the rest of the team in the back here...

...looking very excited.

[Esther] Of course there's pressure from the outside,

but I realized it was him.

Like, he put so much pressure on himself.

And the crazy thing is,

we got to Korea and he still didn't put the run together.

[crowd cheering]

[Esther] But he was like, "This is the run I need to do to win."

And we were all just so stressed out.

We're like, "Well, how is he gonna do it

if he never even put it together?"

[reporter 1] It's final time, and it couldn't be any more exciting.

Shaun White, Scotty James, Ayumu Hirano are leading

the way for gold here in Korea.

-[JJ] How are you feeling? -[Shaun] Pretty good.

It's really hard to see, but it's, you know, it's good.

It's a good pipe.

Challenging day, I mean, low light.

He's tired, but, uh, I know he can do it.

Um...

He just needs to dig deep.

[reporter 2] This is definitely one of the heaviest days

of halfpipe snowboarding in history.

[reporter 1] Scotty James, a contender for the gold.

[reporter 2] Very technical, switch backside 1260,

Scotty James put down the run that he wants to,

on his first run.

Oh, man.

[reporter 1] Shaun White.

It's time for him to try and prove people wrong here,

and come back and win a third gold medal here.

Can he land successive 1440s?

[reporter 2] He would've used it on his first hit,

there it is, front upward 14,

Shaun White looking good here,

and there's a frontside 1260,

and Shaun White has put down and absolutely amazing run.

[Shaun] I just felt it. I was so high in the air.

I'm flipping around, I'm nailing that first trick

into the next trick all the way through,

and I got to the bottom and I just, like,

I could just... everything was just coursing through me.

[reporter 2] There we go, 94.25 for Shaun's first run.

We have a new leader, and currently Shaun White is poised for the gold medal.

That was mental, I mean...

-[man] I wanna cry. -I do, too.

[reporter 1] Ayumu Hirano from Japan.

One of the top three riders in the world.

He has to deliver here.

[reporter 2] Here he is, massive backside air,

going absolutely huge.

And to the frontside double cork 1440,

now for the cab double cork 1440,

and he puts it down, back to back 1440s, wow!

[reporter 1] We've just seen back to back 1400s.

[Shaun] And then oh, Ayumu puts down his run.

And I'm like...

[chuckling] "Fuck!"

[reporter 2] Can you believe it's really a podium score?

[reporter 1] 95.25!

Ayumu Hirano goes into first place.

He says, "Take that, Shaun White! Take that, Scotty James!"

He means business here in Korea.

[Shaun] Wow.

I mean, it's the run I wanted to do.

It's very similar.

[JJ] Let's do it man, you got it.

-You know what you're doing. -[Shaun] Yeah.

Envision this in your head and let's execute it.

[Shaun] I remember grabbing my board

and I'm walking toward the start gate

and this thought had popped into my head,

you know, like, "I could learn to live with second place,"

you know, it's a silver medal at the Olympics.

Like, I... I could learn to live with this.

-[JJ] Easy. -[Shaun] Love you guys.

-[JJ] Love you too, dog. You got this. -[Shaun] You're the man.

I just remember time slowing down.

[man] Yeah, Shaun! Go show 'em what you're made of.

[Shaun] And as I'm walking and I turn

the corner to actually see the halfpipe,

the new thought had occurred,

I'm like, "But you don't have to.

You can win it right now."

[reporter 1] Shaun White is about to drop in

his third and final run, here in Korea.

[Shaun] Here we go!

[reporter 1] Rumor has it, he has something big in his toolbox,

but is he going to get it out now?

-[man] Yeah, Shaun! -[reporter 2] The cab 1440.

He almost took himself out of Olympic contention

learning this trick in New Zealand this summer.

[reporter 1] He's dressed as an astronaut,

but at the moment, he has a problem.

He's only in second place.

Shaun White has dropped in for gold.

Sister Kari, brother Jesse, they've all been part of this journey.

At looking at Shaun not as my son,

but as an incredible athlete.

For what he did in the Olympics,

to go out on that big of a field,

know you have to land the trick that just split your face wide open...

I... I just had a different perspective of him as a human being.

And you know, I just...

...could never be so proud of him...

...and everything that he's accomplished, so...

...then he became a GOAT.

And the one thing that Shaun has done over and over again,

he's done impossible.

He's shown up when he shouldn't have,

done things that will be legendary.

Like, beyond snowboarding.

Like, just pure athleticism that people will remember.

And, I mean, the biggest fear I have now

is him possibly hurting himself.

The level of riding has gotten so...

...dangerous, I hate to say it.

Just so there that I just don't feel like

I want him to push that hard now.

And like, he has nothing to prove.

If he lands that, that will...

You know, that'll be a forever moment.

And, I think, sometimes that's worth it.

I think when I was younger if I told you that

But I truly believe that now.

"Wow, like...

I built this incredible life for myself, and...

...and trying these dangerous tricks to just...

It just didn't seem as appealing anymore."

And I didn't want to gamble this beautiful life I have,

and so, um...

So I got to slide down, wave my hand, thank my competitors,

thank everybody for this amazing career in life,

and, um, and here's to the future.
