Right over there
in those mountains,

it can rain

460 inches a year.

The last time I was
on this island,

we witnessed firsthand

how these flash floods come
in an instant,

unannounced.

[narrator] Three years ago,

the Raneys faced
a state of emergency...

[Matt] Look
at the water over here.

Look how big the culvert is.

[narrator] ... when
torrential rains threatened

to drown out the rescue

of the Nash family's
homestead.

-That looks amazing.
-Oh, my gosh.

[Marty] Hold on!

[narrator] Fighting
dangerous flash floods in mud,

the Raneys helped the Nashes
build new structures...

[Misty] The whole thing is
gonna tip!

[narrator] ... establish
reliable food sources,

and create a safe space

for their growing family.

-[children laughing]
-[narrator] But
recent changes brought

new challenges...

-[Marty] Oh!

the family finds

their off-grid hopes
in peril once again.

[Jackson] We've
gotten to the point

where we wanted to quit.

That's where we're at.

ensure the homesteaders
can withstand

Mother Nature's attack...

[Marty] This is what I wanted
to do the last time,

but it would have been
more mud.

[narrator] ...and
stand the test of time.

[Melissa] Things have changed,

and we just really need
Marty back.

[Marty] Here we go.

Their homestead is
just a few miles away.

[narrator] It's late January
in Kauai.

With sunny skies
and balmy temperatures,

it's easy to forget

the extreme weather
the island faces.

Hawaii's northernmost island,
Kauai,

is known as one
of the wettest places on Earth

due to annual rainfall

that approaches
nearly 40 feet.

Constant precipitation brings
epic flooding.

And the island's vegetation
can grow out of control,

enveloping gardens

and choking out crops.

It was in this environment

that the Raneys met
the Nash family,

struggling to stay
above water.

-Morning, Raney.
-Jackson Nash.

-Pleasure to meet you.
Yes, sir.
-Jackson?

-Melissa.
-[Misty] How far along
are you?

[Melissa] Six months.

[Misty] Oh, congratulations.

-[Marty] Six months?
-Six months, yeah.

-[Jackson] Yeah.
-[Misty] So you're pregnant,

and you live out
in the middle of the jungle.

Yeah.

One of the reasons
that I've come back

to the island
of Kauai is this.

I'm thinking
about the homesteaders.

I'm worried. I'm concerned.

The last time I was
on this island,

we witnessed

torrential rains and...

biblically-sized flooding.

-[Marty] I'm getting soaked.
-[Jackson] Yeah, me too.

-Do you want to come
in the house?
-[rain pattering]

-Sure, let's go.
-Okay.

[Marty] Are we going
to get flooded?

[Jackson] Probably.

[Marty] While we were working
on the Nash Homestead,

day after day,

the rains kept coming.

And then here came the floods.

This is what concerns me.

It's rising.

It was six. It was five.

Now it's four. And it's
starting to breach right here.

-It's coming over.
-[Jackson] Yeah.

[Marty] It flooded
through the property.

And then it took out
the access to their homestead.

[Misty] Look at this.

That's the access
to their house?

Is it?

[Misty] I don't like it.

It's going all the way.

[Melissa] I feel
a little uneasy

about this whole thing.

Um,

we've never crossed
when it's this high.

It might move
in that deep spot.

The truck might move.

[Marty] The government
got involved, state agencies,

FEMA, etc.

This whole town was
getting evacuated.

[Misty] Did you evacuate
last night?

-[Melissa] Yeah.
-Yeah, it came up big.

[Marty] I'm not happy at all

because we're behind schedule.

We tried to build a bridge,

and I'm not sure
the bridge has survived.

All right, here we are.

Oh, yeah.

Bridge is still here.

[uplifting music playing]

[Marty] It's almost funny

to talk about flooding

when you look
at this small little stream
right here.

But it's not so funny
when you look over here

and see
these huge chunks of concrete.

This is
the actual first bridge

that was ever put in here

a long time ago.

But the abutments, the bridge,

everything was pushed down

in a massive flood.

So, this is good news.

Makes me feel good.

Let's see how
the homesteaders have fared

in the last few years.

[uplifting music playing]

-[truck honks]
-[both laughing]

-[Marty] Wow,
you look amazing.
-You're back.

-Let's talk a little bit.
-Yeah, hug the pretty one.

[Marty] It's good to see you.

I am Jackson Nash.

And I'm Melissa Nash.

And we are homesteaders here
on the island of Kauai.

[Melissa] When
the Raneys came last time,

we had
this amazing experience.

We put in all these plants
and all these gardens.

And then I had the baby,

and everything got
kind of neglected.

And now we have the sheep

and not the proper fencing,

and it's just

this domino effect
of challenges.

[folk music playing]

[narrator] To carry on
progress after the rescue,

the Nashes introduced sheep
to the homestead

to combat
the island's jungle invasion

without realizing

the threat they posed
to their own garden.

[Jackson] The sheep
keep eating

this insane
invasive Guinea grass

that's all around us,
which is great,

but the sheep eat

24 hours a day,

they have a tendency
to get into the garden.

So we've essentially
sort of given up gardening.

[Melissa] Being on an island,

it's really important for us

to be able
to produce our own food

because there is
food insecurity

unless we're growing it.

[Jackson] When
the Raneys first came out,

Matt and I went out
and did honey harvest.

And the idea was

that the apiary would
sort of have some hives in it.

[Melissa] But at the time,
we didn't have a tool shed.

So the tools just
all went in there

and it became the tool shed.

[narrator] Without the use
of the apiary,

the Nashes' beehives
have become overrun

with Guinea grass,

leaving them unable

to fully utilize
their most valuable resource.

[Melissa] Having them
in the apiary

would help to keep
the bee boxes from rotting

because right now
they're out in the open.

The Guinea grass grows up
on them.

Other things grow up on them.

[child speaks indistinctly]

[narrator] With
their third child, Neo,

arriving in 2021,

Melissa's parents moved
to the homestead to help.

More mouths to feed

only amplifies
the family's challenge.

[Jackson] You know,
Melissa's folks,

having them here
sometimes does tax

our food production
capabilities.

Um, it also
definitely increases

the amount of water
that we have to pump.

It's not been easy.

It's really, really taking
its toll on us.

I realized that the goal is

to create
a functioning homestead

that we can pass on
to our kids and their kids,

create that sort of

intergenerational
functional space.

The version of myself
that I think of as myself

is a version that my son has
never experienced,

because I'm always
having to worry

about the water and power.

And we've gotten to the point

where we wanted to quit.

[Melissa] We just
really need Marty back.

-[Marty] So what's
the new baby's name?
-[Melissa chuckles]

Neo.

-[Marty] Neo.
-[Melissa] Neonopolis.

Doesn't Neo mean "new"?

-[Jackson] Mm-hmm.
-New.

-Yeah.
-So, Neo, the new baby's
here somewhere.

Back in the day,
correct me if I'm wrong,

kids were hanging out here,

then people were
sleeping over there.

We live in the home,
on the homestead.

If that's true,
I'm really happy.

the deck you built.

-[Marty] I forgot about this.
-[Melissa] And the roof.

[Marty] And the breezeway.

all that rain.

-[Jackson] We continued
the deck.
-[Marty] You did?

-And the bathhouse.
-I love it.

I'm not going to be happy

unless you tell me
you're using it.

[Jackson] We use it every day.

Oh, look, there's still
the tubby water from the kids.

-[Marty] I like this.
-[Melissa chuckles]

-[Jackson] Yeah. Works well.
-[Marty] I really like this.

You have some solar.

So we put in a couple
hundred watts

of solar on the roof.

-[Marty] 12 volt?
-[Jackson] Uh, yep.

[Marty] A couple of years ago,

our goal here in Kauai was

to get this beautiful family
of four under one roof.

Now it's a family of five,

and the parents have
moved to the property.

There is
a 12-volt power system,

but that's not enough
for one family,

let alone

two.

Well, I think it's time
to look around this property.

We are currently
in a situation

where we're finding ourselves
sort of running up

against the limits
of our own power generation

with the systems
that we have in place.

[Melissa] It runs
our water pump,

sometimes,

depending on how much sun
we've gotten.

It's so crucial to have power

to be able to make meals
for a big family.

[folk music playing]

[Marty] What is
this whole fenced area

supposed to be?

[goat bleating]

-Uh-oh.
-[high-pitched]
They're the sheep.

[Jackson] Look
at that sheep. Here.

[Melissa] Oh, Mochiko.

-[Jackson] There we go.
-[Melissa baby talks]

-[Marty] What's this guy?
-[Melissa] This guy
with the horns is Cros,

and that's his brother, By.

-[Marty] Hold on. Cros-By?
-[Melissa chuckles]

-[Melissa] Cros and By.

-Is this after David Crosby?

-[Melissa] Yes.
-[Jackson] Yeah.

[Marty] You've
got to be a musician.

-I'm a musician.

And I come
from a musical family.

Graham Nash is my father.

-Yeah.

That's a pretty serious
musical legacy.

Yeah, that's my DNA.

I grew up on the road,
following Dad around.

I've been in every state
in the US.

And then we would come here

and live
in our really beautiful,

very simple,

tin roof,

single wall construction,

old surf shack
in the mountains.

So were you buddies
with David Crosby?

He and I were friends
my entire life.

And the year before he passed,

he and his family came out,

and we all got to hang out.

Well, the music
always lives on.

Right? The music
always lives on.

So let me guess.

Was this all grown over?
You put them in here,

-and now they're
beating it down?
-[Jackson] Exactly.

[Marty] How high was it?

-Seven, eight feet?
-No way.

-[Melissa] Taller
than the van.
-Taller than the van.

-[Marty] No.
-[Melissa] Yeah,
we couldn't see the van.

You couldn't see anything.
It was just a field of grass.

If you look right over here,

this is a citrus tree.

You can't even hardly
make it out.

-[Marty] Where's it at?
-It's right in front of us.

[Marty] I don't see it.

Oh, what? Oh, I see.

-So, this--
-What is it?

-Another tangerine.
-That you planted?

That I planted.

It looks to me like
it's overgrown.

So it grew,

and then
the Guinea grass came,

and the Guinea grass will
grow up the tree

and pull down the growing tip.

And the Guinea grass will
jump on top of the tree.

And together, they'll
pull the tree down,

and they'll basically eat it.

-That's crazy.
-Yeah.

How long did it take 'em
to chew this down?

-About a month.
-No!

-[Melissa] Yeah.
-7 foot tall

to a golf course?

-It's pretty extraordinary
how fast they were.
-[Melissa] Yeah.

They eat 24 hours a day.

[Marty] Okay,
where's the garden at?

[Melissa] Like,
right over here.

[Jackson] It's been
a bit overgrown.

[Melissa] This is
the last of the comfrey

that Misty and I planted

-to line the fence with.
-Yeah.

[Misty] Fencing's
really hard to deal with.

It just kind of
ends up getting swallowed up

by the Guinea grass. So run
the cardboard underneath,

plant some comfrey,

and it'll be
a nice little barrier

for the garden.

Kind of
weed proofs the garden.

So that's what
we're going to do.

[Melissa laughing]

I mean, come on.

-Three years.
-Three years.

[Jackson] No, that's
the thing is we've cut this

several times.

You can cut
Guinea grass to the ground,

and at two weeks
of decent rain,

it's three feet tall.

-No.
-[Jackson] I've seen
Guinea grass 20 feet tall.

[Marty] So what are
you doing for a garden?

-We're not, right now.
-We're not gardening.

[Marty] Sheep are
an excellent animal

to bring to a homestead

if your homestead's
being overtaken

by Guinea grass.

However, they'll grow
over everything else

on that homestead

that's not protected.

Beautiful fruit trees,
that garden,

everything in this homestead

will be eaten
by free-range sheep.

-Shall we?
-Yep.

We shall.

[folk music playing]

Behold, Marty, the apiary.

I got to be honest with you.

-I don't see a bee. [chuckles]
-[Melissa chuckles]

The bees aren't here.

-This is just storage
at the moment.
-[Marty] Okay.

So it looks to me
like it's a...

tool shed.

-[Melissa] Yeah.
-[Jackson] It's a tool shed.

-[Melissa] It's
a tool shed right now.
-[Marty] Okay.

I'm sad

that when we left here,
this was all about bees.

And...

the bees aren't here.

This homestead was set up
with a new apiary,

and it was a clean, safe place

to harvest the honey.

Where'd the bees go?

We've got
to figure out a plan.

You don't really have any...

storage or outbuildings here?

-No.
-Right?

And really, like, a place

where in a high-winds
kind of weather scenario,

we could put
the sheep under cover.

[Marty] What do
they do in a storm?

[Melissa] They go
under the stage.

-[Jackson] They kind of
hunker down here and there.
-[Melissa chuckles]

[Marty] Really?

I feel a little bit bad,

because I know
the last time we were here,

I wanted to move
that shipping container...

-Mmm.
-...get it out of the jungle.

-[Jackson] Mmm.
-And there wasn't time.

You might not believe this,

but the first time I went
to go find that thing...

-[Jackson] Mmm.
-...I couldn't find it.

-It was in the jungle.
-I believe it.

-You guys know where it's at?
-Yeah.

-We do.

[Marty] These doors work?

[Melissa] They do.

[Marty] Who did all this work?
It's got a roof.

-[Melissa] Jackson
and a couple friends.
-[Marty] You guys...

So this was functional.

We stayed in here.

When it first got here,

we moved out of a car tent

and stayed in this
for about a month.

[Marty] The last time
I was here,

I'm thinking we have to put
that in to use. Why?

Whether it's a barn

or shelter
or a tool shed, whatever,

it's ready-made.
It's ready-built.

All right, and there she is.

-[Jackson]
Our shipping container.

[Marty] The proverbial
shipping container.

-[Melissa] Yeah.
-[Marty] Let's talk
about this.

-[Jackson] Yeah.
-[Marty] One of the reasons

I think I'm standing here is

because I feel like

there's
unfinished business here.

The Nashes are letting
all these sheep

free range on the homestead,

and they can
also access the garden.

That's bad.

And they need a tool shed.

If we can get this thing
moved over here

inside of a fenced area

and let the sheep tag along,

we might be killing
two problems

with one sheeping container.

Last time we moved
a building a short distance.

This is what, 100 yards?

Yeah, maybe 200 yards.

-200 yards, okay.
-Yeah.

[narrator] In an effort
to consolidate the homestead

and provide shelter
for the family's livestock,

Marty will navigate
the shipping container

through 8-foot-tall
Guinea grass

to be used as a sheep pen
and workshop,

freeing up the apiary

so the bees can
be moved back in.

He'll then help the family
begin the process

of reclaiming the garden
from the invading jungle

and upgrade
their off-grid power source.

So we're probably going
to get some equipment

and some tools.

And if you want
to keep cleaning this out

or get it to a place
where you think
it's ready to move,

shut the doors.

Marty begins
a full-scale re-rescue

of the Nashes'
5-acre homestead.

[Jackson] Arrividerci, Vito.

-[narrator] Three years ago,

epic flooding
and a state of emergency

forced an all-out scramble
to save them.

But now,

with three more mouths
to feed,

a herd of ravenous sheep
to corral,

and failing infrastructure,

the homestead faces
its final chance.

[Marty] The last time
that I set foot

on this homestead,

the rain never stopped.

The river flooded.

There were days
this homestead wasn't
even accessible.

It's not a good feeling
to leave a homestead

knowing you could
have done more.

And on this homestead,

we definitely could
have done more.

-What's out there?
-[Jackson] Jungle. Grass.

Now listen, I don't want
to hit a beehive.

No beehives.

The container is
just ahead, like,

11 o'clock.

I mean, I can't see you

if you get
in 10-foot-tall grass.

[Jackson] I would say
I'd go in front of you,
but there's no path.

-You just got to go

I just ran over a surfboard.

[Marty] If we take
that shipping container,

move it inside
the fenced area,

and bring along the sheep,

we can protect the garden.

Jackson gets a workspace

and a place
for all of his tools.

And that frees up the apiary

where the bees can move back

into their comfortable home,
busy...

as bees.

That's the missing piece
of our shipping container.

That's where the door panel
was cut out.

-Well, we'll set it off
to the side.
-Perfect.

[narrator] Placing
the shipping container

in the pasture

will protect the sheep

and prevent them
from grazing the garden.

It's a pasture
that only exists

because three years ago,

Misty took measures

to protect the area
from flooding.

[Misty] Okay, I'm gonna try
and go straight.

This homestead is
at the bottom of this valley,

and it has
this beautiful river
running through it.

The problem is,
when it rains here,

we get flash flooding.

They have these
massive berms in place,

but they're not completed.

My plan is
to complete the berming

to protect structures
and ultimately people.

Wow, this is the berm.

It's super wide.

I mean, maybe you could
continue this berm

a little what ways,
but it's like...

I don't know.

Not with anything this big.

There's a reason
why this berm is so big.

Anything smaller than this
is going to wash away.

So we just don't
have the material

to even remotely closely
do anything like this.

[narrator] In order to protect

the part of the homestead
directly in the floodplain,

Misty's plan is to first dig

a water-controlled trench
or swale.

Next, she will use
the unearthed dirt

to engineer a new berm

to work in conjunction
with the swale.

This should safely
direct the water

back into the river.

So I'll start digging
this trench.

As long as I divert the water
all back to the creek,

we're at least protecting
this part of the homestead.

-I want to show
you guys something.
-[Jackson] Yeah.

-[Misty] Come check this out.
-[Melissa] Okay.

-What do you guys think?
-[Melissa laughing]

Berm, baby berm!

-It's so good. [chuckles]
-[Misty laughs]

So normal people don't get
this excited about berms.

It's a really big deal for us.

I know it's just
a pile of dirt

and a big trench
in the ground,

but for us, this means safety
for our family.

There's been floods

where people have
died upstream here.

-Yeah. Yeah.
-You know? So it's real.

-This whole trench
is not only...
-[upbeat music playing]

[Misty] ...preventing
and helping with flooding

coming from that stream,

but it's capturing everything

from the mountains.

And you can see
if it hits the trench,

it's going that way
and back to the creek.

[narrator] Now, Marty wants
to move the shipping container

out of the jungle

and into
the newly created pasture,

where it can solve
multiple problems at once.

[Marty] Owen, what's going on?

[Owen] You want
to do one more?

I like it. I like it.

We squeezed in four days

to come to the Nashes'

and get this project done.

So I need the best
of the best.

Guess who lives
on the island of Kauai

during the winter months?
Oh, yeah.

Misty and Maciah.

So one phone call
got Micaiah and Owen

right here on the homestead.

[narrator] To turn
the shipping container

into a multipurpose barn,

Marty will first disassemble
the roof and deck.

Then he'll move it
to a more central location

away from the floodplain

before restoring the deck
and awning

and preparing the interior

to use as a livestock shelter.

[Marty] You guys ready?

So this 40-foot-long
shipping container

has a covered roof

and a deck attached to it.

The question is

can we disassemble it,

move it through the jungle

and reassemble it?

Marty focuses his attention

on the nearly 1,000-pound deck

attached to the bottom
of the shipping container.

With no time to build
a new structure from scratch,

reusing the existing materials
is essential.

It's just pulling hard.

We're attached to the house,

for the container is

have the sheep under

have a place for a workshop,

I don't know if I can
get on the back,

but could we just pull it off
those back blocks?

Relocating structures safely

was a vital part
of the Nashes' first rescue.

[Marty] Okay,
while we're here,

it's our bedroom.

-So we sleep in there.

Where do you cook?

Um, we mostly cook
at our tiny house.

You live
in two different homes.

Uh, we basically live
all over the property.

We just do a lot of walking.

So from here to the shower,

to the tiny house,

to the creek.

None of them are...

-None of them are
connected. Yeah.
-...consolidated?

Is that the way
you guys want to do it?

No, no, no.

[Marty] This place is
a unique homestead

in that they're not
living under one roof.

There's no home here.

You sleep in one building,
you cook in another.

Question is,
how sanitary is that?

Maybe more importantly,
how safe is that?

We can begin moving
that green building over here

because we're trying
to make a home here.

If you can do it in the rain,

before a flash flood sweeps
through right here.

Well, we'll deal with it.

is truly a formidable foe.

So I got to thinking about it.

and they want to help out,

and it's really important

of the current state
of the garden.

what in the world?

I... I got to say, this
Guinea grass is tall.

How can I help you
in the two days that I have?

[Melissa] Okay,
so we have the sheep,
as you know.

Um, they've been
an incredible solution...

-...for the grass for us.

One of the challenges
in this space is...

So, we put in this gate,
we put in a gate over here,

We never put in a gate
for the driveway part,
into here,

So they still have access
into here.

So we're figuring out
how to corral them properly.

consume roughly 2-4 %
of their body weight

in dry matter per day.

But their tastes stretch
well beyond food.

From simple household items
like car keys and coins,

to aluminum cans, fence posts,

and even bicycle tires,

sheep have been known
to eat just about anything
they can reach.

But... Yeah, everything
got overgrown.

I had just had a baby,

-and it just happened so fast,
so fast.
-Yeah. Too much.

So let's talk about it.

Last time I was here,
we were limited
by what we could do.

We were having,
like a... a state emergency
with flooding.

It's crazy that
in the three years
since we've been here last,

how overgrown
this homestead has gotten.

I'm in the old garden
we put in together.

I'm looking at
all this fencing

and I can't even see the firm.

The Guinea grass
is like 12-feet high.

So I get it, you know,
they just had their baby.

Neo was born,
and I think their hands
are just full.

So I'm glad I'm here.

I have some ideas, you know,
we're gonna be busy.

I think this would be
a really fun thing

to kind of create that garden
that we went to...

-You remember?
-Yeah.

[narrator] During
their previous rescue,
Misty and Melissa

visited a local gardener
for inspiration

on how to effectively garden
on Kauai.

[Misty] This is beautiful,
you guys.

And our garden
is a little different

because it's...
it's an ecosystem

and we're always
trying to make sure

the ground is covered,
you know.

And we're always
trying to transition

from these grasses
into a... a state that
we can really control.

If you notice,
none of our garden

is open to the edge
of all of this.

All of it is edged
because all the weeds
are runner weeds.

Everything moves
laterally here.

So we use the black tarps,

plywood and then cardboard.

You're always fighting a war
that's coming from the sides.

So this is actually
a barrier or a wall...

-[Rob] This is a barrier--
-...that's separating you
from the grass?

-[Rob] Yes.
-[Misty] That's awesome.

[Rob] If we didn't have
all of this, we would be
constantly just

trying to weed whack
and keep an edge.

[Melissa] It's incredibly
reassuring to see
what they've done,

because then that lets me know
that just the two of us
can also do that.

You're creating fertility
through death.

Now I can do that
with any kind of plant
that is alive.

Now I use comfrey
because it's short,
it's low, right?

And it's also the most
mineral dense plant there is.

[Melissa] For us
it's Guinea grass.

-[Rob] That's your food.
-Yeah.

-This whole field
was solid Guinea grass.
-Mmm-hmm.

[Rob] And we were able
to collect it,

and we created
this whole garden

with a few acres
of Guinea grass.

They have a decent-sized
garden space,

but it's just getting
swallowed by the jungle.

[Rob] My two cents would be,
keep the ground covered.

It either has to be
covered in death,

or it has to be
covered in life.

And if it's not,
it's going to be
covered in weeds.

Yes.

I was blown away
by what two people
can do in just one year.

I see how it's really
attainable for us,

now that we've got
the water management

and, you know,
just certain things
put in place.

And I'm really
excited about that,

and to be able to implement
some of their techniques

and gardening strategies
that we learned.

I love what we've seen here,
and I'm excited to get back

to their spiral way

being overtaken
by invasive guinea grass,

Misty will plant
a spiral pattern
herb and produce garden

fifteen feet in diameter

using six-inch high
plastic edging.

She'll configure two tracks

parallel to each other,
starting from the same point,

creating both a garden track
as well as a walking track,

providing a natural
weed barrier

and making
the garden accessible
to the Nash's children.

Finally, a new gate
will keep the sheep
from getting too close.

But first things first,
is the Guinea grass.

this crazy idea

roof system like that.

this little pig shack.

like, a cup and pan
roof style,

where we're gonna
rip the bamboo in half.

overlap it and create

they showed up, they got rid
of the guinea grass,

and that was so helpful.

a kid garden,

I'm gifting the garden
to you guys,

not your mom.

These are the last days

where everything gets
really intensified

because we know
we're running out of time.

But it's just been hard.

I'm pretty traumatized
by the rain.

we're almost there.

Are we going to get there
in the end?

and less guinea grass
to contend with,

thanks to the sheep,

Misty hopes to revive
the homestead garden

once and for all.

We got the compost,
we got the mulch,

across the homestead
for the first time all week...

These look like albizzias.

...a leaning cluster of
invasive albizzia trees

next to the beehives
catches Marty's attention.

How big is this thing
going to be in five years?

In five years, this thing's
gonna be 60 feet tall.

Maybe five feet across.

[narrator] Brought over
from Indonesia 100 years ago,

albizzia trees are renowned
for their majestic stature

and lush canopies.

However, their large branches
are inherently brittle

and could become dangerously
prone to breakage,

especially during storms
or heavy winds.

[Marty] The first time
I came to this homestead,

Jackson showed me a tree
that looked to be
10 feet across.

[Matt] When I look
at this tree, to me,

it's like a whole forest
worth of trees.

Each one of these branches
is a tree,

and a lot of these branches
are big branches.

Told him it was an albizzia,
and he wanted it cut down.

[whistles]

Just kiss it.

Don't try to do anything.

[Jackson] Unreal!

[exclaiming]

[Marty] Whoo!

[Jackson laughing]

That was awesome, man.

So-- seeing that tree
go down, man.

That's huge.

This albizzia tree
has dominated

this whole section of the land
for ten years,

and it was always
the thing that

"We'll get to it one day,"

and then along came Marty
and Matt and Misty.

Got to it.

[Marty] This time
on the homestead,

I'm looking at ten albizzias
about this big around.

But it doesn't matter.

All of these albizzias
are a little crazy.

They're dry, they're brittle,
they're heavy,

they grow so fast,

and the limbs aren't really
strong enough

to stay in the tree.
They just fall off.

The wind couldn't be worse.

There's three or four beehives
right here in the grass.

Did you know that?

No.

[Marty] You should be good.

Bees are only attracted
to bright yellow.

I've got a dead limb
just hanging right now.

[Marty] I'm well aware,
after working on Maui,

the big island in Kauai,

that albizzia trees are truly
the ultimate the widow-maker.

This is a dangerous homestead.

If you don't do everything
with a dose of safety,

anything can happen here.

[narrator] Bees are a valuable
addition to any homestead

for their ability to provide
honey and pollinate crops.

Resilient with complex
social structures,

their diligent work ethic
allows them

to overcome environmental
obstacles in the wild

and sustain their colonies.

[Jackson] Look, you can see

-Yeah.

[Jackson]
So, yeah, we may have--

-We may have to move.
-We may have just
nipped that beehive.

Well, shoot. I'm sorry.

[narrator] With the beehives
agitated and time short,

Jackson turns his focus
to the next task,

clearing out the apiary

so it can be used
for its intended purpose.

[Jackson]
Our apiary has sort of become
our de facto tool shed.

It was never meant to get
filled with tools,

but it was the only space
that we had

that was dry
and out of the elements.

[narrator] Three years ago...

Matt helped Jackson
convert a discarded bungalow

into a new home
for the family's bee colony

and all of the valuable
honey they produce.

[Matt] We'll just get it
all framed up

then we'll go into
windows and screens.

We've got some kind of
crude hinges here

that we can kind of use.

[Jackson] Rad!

So what do you think?

[Matt] I say we go--
kind of go this way

and then we'll
frame in the side.

-Okay.
-Don't get super close,

but maybe
a quarter/half away.

We're good.

So that's one down.

The Raneys' particular
tight-knit-ness of
their family,

it reminds me so much of mine.

I love it.

"Ohana" is extended family.

When the Raneys and friends
showed up to help us,

it just felt like our ohana
was that much bigger.

[narrator] Before Jackson can
relocate the homestead's bees

to the new apiary,

Matt and Jackson must first
venture into the jungle

to harvest the honey.

[Matt]
What is this smoke doing?

[Jackson] The smoke,
it like triggers a-- a--

a primordial urge in bees
that says, like,

"Our tree is on fire.
We've got to evacuate.

Everybody, eat as much honey
as you can."

It basically distracts them.

[Matt] I've been stung by bees
a few times in my life.

It sucks.

But there's a way to become
one with the bees,

and I kind of get a sense
that they, like,

know that you're helping.

And that helps me
do what I need to do.

[Jackson] So I'm gonna smoke
the front for you.

and just lift straight up.

Into the air.

Beautiful.

You're a beekeeper.

We set one edge kind of
on the ear of the bucket,

and then we take our spatula.

By the time we're done here,

we'll probably have...

maybe two and a half gallons
of honey.

This is a great dry space,

Not only did you like
save the structure,

a beehive with no gloves on

and like kept your total cool

that's an impressive
thing to do.

has a safe
and comfortable home

for the busiest workers
on the homestead.

As the final day
on the Nash homestead begins

and the crew scrambled

to turn the shipping container
into a barn and workshop...

This is like some of my
favorite couple of days

that I've ever spent
on any homestead.

I was with kids
the whole time,

there was learning,
there was creating together,

and it was just so fun
and so rewarding.

And now,
hopefully once and for all,

there's a garden here
that will be taken care of,

and there will be a reliable
safe food source.

[narrator] Three years ago,

Misty created a flood-proof,
pig-proof garden space

for the Nashes
to enjoy year-round.

But, over time, the island's
destructive guinea grass

proved too much to overcome.

Today, Misty has reimagined
the space as a spiral garden,

creating a barrier between
the weeds and the plants

and preventing guinea grass

from working its way
into the mulch bed.

With a new gate
to keep the sheep out,

the design also
provides easy access

for the family's children,

giving them the opportunity
to help manage

one of the homestead's
most valuable resources.

It's the best garden I've
ever seen in my whole life!

a few hours left

to finish the Nashes
new multiuse barn

and, after nearly 36 months,

finally leave them
with a completed rescue,

the pressure is on.

[Marty] When I left this
homestead a few years ago,

I've never really felt

like we gave these
homesteaders a fair shake.

Yeah, we worked hard

and we helped them
a little bit,

but the only
window of opportunity

that I had to come here
is closing fast.

have the livestock
under cover.

overwhelming Kauai,

needed to thrive.

container barn and tool shed,

the family's new
multiuse structure

will provide ample space
for the herd

and serve as
the homestead's workshop.

I-- I went for a brand-new
window that opened

so this could be sealed,

As it stands right now
with my family growing

and our kids getting older

and Melissa's parents have
just moved onto the homestead,

we are up against the limits

of what our existing
solar system can produce.

And it was something that
we didn't really have
any solution for.

And to upgrade
our solar system,

it means a directly
higher quality of life

for me and my kids,
my wife, our whole scene.

because we used
to have to like bring

this big like flashlight
and like bring it in.

And I had to place it there

and make sure it's
specifically pointing

in a way so I can see.

And it was really hard
because sometimes

it would just like turn off
in the middle of your bath
