A jungle dedicated to the
proposition that success is

One of the creatures that stalks this
jungle is a human octopus named Al Deuce.

He came up the hard way from street
hoodlum to big business in slot machines.

From there, it was only
another step into entertainment.

Specialty, jukeboxes.

Made and sold them.

With nearly 50,000 of his music
boxes spread around the country...

It makes pretty good
coffee and cake for Aldous.

But underneath the Homburg in his fancy
$400 suits is still the same old hoodlum.

Tentacle number two is wrapped
around a different million-dollar racket.

The racket of bootlegging
other labels and selling

them to an unsuspecting
public at discount prices.

And this is where they do it.

Location unknown, but the point
from which millions of dollars

in bootleg records are shipped
to every corner of the world.

Tentacle number three makes sure
the operator of the neighborhood

bar or malt shop
installs the right jukebox.

Tentacle number four.

You don't just operate Al's
jukebox. You buy his records,

whether you like it or not.

You're convinced they're good.

And the people who work for Al Deuce
have a very persuasive way of convincing.

All this I knew, but to prove it,

To get one person to talk
was the reason for digging

into the whole monstrous
corruption that was Al Duce,

and reporting on it in my
syndicated column, The Corruptors.
