Webster defines an amateur
athlete as one who engages in a contest

for the sheer love of the sport with
no monetary return, a noble thought.

But when the take from these
admissions runs into the millions,

it loses its amateur
standing somewhere along the line.

New coliseums, new athletic
buildings, arenas, parade grounds, gymnasiums,

all out of the admissions these amateurs
have earned for their scholastic sponsors.

Out of this seemingly noble
enterprise have come some of the

major gambling networks
controlled by the corruptists.

Who stop at nothing to swing
the betting odds their way.

The game was over.
Everybody had had a good evening.

The favorite team had won,

although not by as wide a margin
as the newspapers had predicted.

The winning team had reason to be proud.

They had just played
their eighth straight win.

And their most celebrated
player, young Ollie Oliver,

had even more reason to be proud.

He'd personally made more
than half of their points.

Yeah, that's right. One ticket in the
name of Flood on the 5 o'clock plane.

Me? Yeah, this is only all

friend of mine named Wally.

name he's using these days.

He's a tough little
man who owes me a favor.

bribing college kids to
play basketball their way.

It's pretty rotten, so I
