Frankie is the kind of drummer

So, you know, seeing the
Beatles on the ed Sullivan show,

that really started it for me.

on somebody's couch comfortably.

And so the option was L.A.
the L.A. music scene

was phenomenal,
this incredible club scene.

You had the starwood,
the whisky.

You had troubadour, the roxy,
wong's Chinatown, wong's west.

The one band that everybody was
talking about on the L.A. scene

at the time was quiet riot.

Twisted sister and quiet riot

were sort of east coast and west
coast mirrors of each other.

We were slugging it out
for years on the east coast

when no one was interested
in glam-inspired heavy rock.

To this day, I remember the way

they opened with searchlights
and sirens.

And someone's gonna
find a bootleg

that you're gonna
put up right there.

And you're seeing
these red police lights

going off on either side
of the stage.

And I'm looking at this,
and I'm going,

"this is production in a club."

When he walked in the room

or was anywhere,
it was like Kevin, Kevin, Kevin.

He loved to sing.
And he was gonna try out

for this new band.

When he decided
to become a singer,

we said,

"but you can't really sing."

Kevin willed himself
to become a rock singer.

And actually, he
was a great singer ultimately.

I don't know how he did that.

I would've given anything
to have been in the room

when Kevin
auditioned for Randy rhoads.

Little did he know this skinny
kid from California would go on

to become one of the most iconic
guitarists in metal history.

To become one of the most iconic

Just like Chuck Berry
inspired Keith Richards

and all those guys,

that's who Randy rhoads
is to our new generation

of guitar players.

I could hear a little,

you know, classical
in his playing.

And it sounded so different
and evil.

And he influenced me
and millions

and millions
of other guitar players.

Mick Ronson, Jeff Beck,
Jimi Hendrix,

all the great guitar players,
and here it was.

I heard all of them stuck
in one guy's own style,

in this little bedroom
in Burbank.

And I went, "oh, my God.

"No one even knows this guy
exists.

And he called me?" And he goes,

"now let's hear you sing."

And I go, "no way."

And right there at
my mom's house,

that was the foundation
of quiet riot.

I could not understand
for the life of me

why they weren't bigger.

They were turned down
by every single record company

three times over.

Every week it seemed that
there was another record company

coming in to see us.

Once they heard us, they'd be,

once they heard us, they'd be,

"yeah, great band.
Call me tomorrow.

We'll do lunch."

And then they would always pass
on us.

And they'd listen
to the first 20 seconds

of a song and zip

to the next song
and listen to another bit of it.

And it was like, "oh, my God.
They don't get it."

If you didn't look
like the knack,

devo, the motels,

the bands that were getting
signed in Los Angeles,

they didn't want anything
to do with you.

This group is called quiet riot

and has been together four years
and considers itself

permanent wave, rather
than the punk-ish new wave.

You have to be aware
of these distinctions.

Quiet riot also falls into the
general category, "garage band."

The record labels
are so unwilling

to take a chance, especially--

Quiet riot continues
the struggle at the other end

of the rock economic ladder,

working day jobs to pay
for equipment, rehearsal halls,

The light at the end of
the tunnel was getting dimmer.

I had heard around town
that there was this guy

named ozzy Osbourne
looking for musicians.

And then Randy said, you know,

he had already spoken
with ozzy Osbourne.

When he finally got it together
to go to england

with ozzy Osbourne, that was--

I was more than aware
the group was over.

And all of a sudden, there was
a huge crack in that world

for Kevin and that friendship.

Now Randy was potentially gonna
be successful on his own.

And what's Kevin gonna do now?

And what's Kevin gonna do now?

Randy said, "I'll tell you
what, he's gonna rally.

"He's gonna come around.

He's gonna be absolutely huge."

Welcome monarch.

So my band, monarch, was playing

at the valley west supper club.

Kevin dubrow
was in the audience.

I was in five bands at one time.

I was in one band because maybe
they'd pay me enough money

to, like, buy drumsticks.

I was in another band
because maybe they fed me.

I was in another band
because maybe they fed me.

I was in another band
because I might have been,

you know, sleeping on one
of the band members' couches.

And I was in the other two bands

because they were better
than the first three bands.

I had no money.

And that's the first time
Kevin actually saw me play.

Kevin said
to me, "that was the night

that I knew you
were the right drummer for me.

When I wanted to change
drummers,

there was only one guy to get.
It was Frankie banali.

I mean, he was on every session.

He played on everybody's record,

either as a ghost drummer
or as a credited one.

Randy rhoads told me, he goes,

"you should hear
Frankie banali play drums.

"You should hear

He's got
that big John bonham beat."

It was like... Doosh! Doosh!

It seemed like Frankie banali
filled the void left by Randy.

He really brought that backbone
to the band.

But he also brought
a strong friendship with Kevin.

And I formed what turned out

to be a revolving door
of musicians from Los Angeles.

The final incarnation
was myself, Carlos cavazo,

Frankie banali,
and a guy named Chuck Wright.

All the different
revolving door of players,

Frankie and Kevin were--

They were the nucleus
of the band throughout it.

on the drums,
Mr. Frankie banali.

You don't get a lot of team

where it's the lead singer
or a drummer.

It's, you know,
it's always the lead singer

and the guitar player, isn't it?

But with Frankie and Kevin,

it was that underlying feeling
that it was the groove

that was giving Kevin
that flamboyant--

It was a unparalleled vision
they had.

You know,
very big, loud, powerful playing

and Kevin's voice,
as we well know,

very big, powerful.

Kevin was anmazing singer.

Powerful voice.

Those two fused together,

creating, again,
the classic quiet riot sound.

Kevin loved to be onstage
with Frankie.

The chemistry, the dynamic,
he loved the way Frankie played.

He loved that big sound.

All I want to know is,
did we have fun?

always was stronger
than whatever hardships

they went through,
because of the music.

We had tried to get
a record deal with everyone,

every single label.

And nobody cared,
because everybody had jumped

on the new wave bandwagon.

what we weren't doing.

Lots of skinny ties, you know,

the padded jacket,

the keyboard solos.

Blondie became a really good
example

of what a new wave band
was considered.

We were all trying
to figure out what style

or what haircut
we were gonna have.

And now comes quiet riot
with the spandex

and the wild colors and the
striped microphone stand.

All of a sudden,
here was this young person

that didn't behave the way
other young people did.

And you're thinking, "you know
what, this is American metal.

This is something
we haven't seen before, really."

It was not considered

cool to be into a lot
of hard rock music back then.

In my opinion, heavy metal
is just shit, you know.

People hated the bumper
stickers on my car and the music

that came out of it so much
that they would physically

attempt to hit my car
like a bumper car.

Quiet riot was up against that.

Quiet riot was up against that.

And they really had to break
the door down to get in.

And then they met this guy,
Spencer proffer.

I said, "I think you guys
are great.

"I think you have a sound

"that's unlike anything
that's on the radio.

Maybe something big
will happen."

I think it's pretty safe to say

that within the music industry,

the quiet riot metal health
record deal

is the example of
probably the single worst

rock 'n' roll record deal
ever created.

When you're drowning,

and someone throws you
a very little life preserver,

you grab that motherfucker,

and you hang on for dear life.

And you hang on for dear life.

And you all try to pile on.

And you're glad to get it.

Rock 'n' roll
is a risky business.

Right?

After the phone call
came from Rudy of,

you know, "well,
we made a record,"

I heard the record.

And I went, "holy shit.

This is great."

When metal health came out,

we were aware of it.

But it wasn't
until the us festival

that the new metal scene
blew up,

and quiet riot just exploded.

375,000 people
and they're screaming,

We went out there, and we said,

"hey, you know what, fuck you.

Here we are."

When we did the us festival,
that gave Kevin validation.

He was right,

and the rest of the music
industry had been wrong.

Any obstacles that Kevin
thought were in his way

from that point on, you
could no longer say no to Kevin.

Then the video took off.

And it was the age of mtv.

And that's when things

And we played it and played it
and kept getting good--

Better and better response

and more and more enthusiastic
and excited response.

So it was also very exciting

for us to see,

"oh, my gosh, look at that.

"We're playing it.

It's going up and up
the charts."

So we were like,
"this is us. We're doing this."

And of course, you know, radio
stations across the country

were playing it as well.
But to us,

we felt like it was, you know--

We were the secret ingredient.

Quiet riot came
from this void, from nowhere.

And all of a sudden,
went from nowhere

and we were everywhere.

For a short period of time,

a microcosm
of rock 'n' roll history,

that's just where they went
to sign autographs recently,

at a record store
in worcester, Massachusetts.

Success is wonderful.

won't tolerate it.

So that's what happened.

I am so grateful that I did.

And he knew how much he
meant to me

And he went into his office,

was that he knew

And he has to take care
of Ashley no matter what.

hang in there for her,
if anything.

And he will not abandon
his responsibilities to her.

had not played since Kevin died.

At the time of Kevin's death,

nobody honored him.

The grammys completely
and totally overlooked him,

because early on in Kevin's
career, he said an awful lot

he could never live it down.

You came out of this L.A. scene.

And you've spawned a lot
of other bands now.

How do you feel
about these guys?

The media just
wanted to bait Kevin.

They wanted that controversy.

Well, I've gotten

heat about this subject
every time I get asked.

Well, I'll tell you,

I don't know
how good they all are.

And they are all mad at me
for saying this time over time.

I think I'm probably
the only guy with balls enough

to voice my honest opinion.

Kevin was angry about
the success of other bands.

He felt the other bands
weren't deserving.

I know that when they
get asked, these other groups.

I know that when they
get asked, these other groups

get asked about quiet riot,

they say no comment.

And when they ask me about them,

I usually say something
to the effect of...

He's literally said to me,

"doesn't it piss you off

"that these other bands,
they get together, and,

"like, six months, a year later,
they got a record deal,

"and two years later, they're
selling millions of records?

Doesn't it piss you off?"

Now, I'm being proved wrong

'cause a couple of them
have albums in the charts.

They're doing very well.

I don't have to like them.

I remember sitting
and literally wincing.

and go, "oh, my God.

What are you doing? You are
committing career suicide."

I said, "they would all be
nothing without us."

I was jealous, I was envious,
and I was petty.

Anybody who had
a better record deal

having such incredible fans,

such incredible love

to being so boom, like, out.

And the backlash
was really immediate.

Once it comes down to having

your photo become a dart board
for hit parader magazine,

that's not a nice list
to be a part of.

Because of all the, you know,

all the badmouthing
and all the talk

that's been going on with Kevin,
the record company

doesn't want to have anything
to do with us now.

I wanted to fire the producer.

I wanted to fire the manager.

I wanted to fire the label.

I wanted to get
out of the whole record deal.

And guess who got fired. Oops.

As much as it broke my heart,

he gave us no choice.

And no one
could tell me to shut up.

And no one
could tell me to shut up.

At that moment in time,
he was a different person.

I didn't even realize it.

I was drinking a lot.

I was snorting a lot of cocaine.

And I was just doing the rock
star lifestyle and thinking

I can say and do anything
I want.

These are my new Florida
friends.

All the hanger-ons

telling him he was
the coolest guy on the planet.

And he was partying with them.

Frankie felt that I was really

an idiot for hanging around
with these people.

That started--where
the separation between Frankie

and I really sits,
which is really a shame,

because we had
a great relationship, you know.

I never thought
there was ever gonna be

anything between us again.

The gloves were gonna be off.

Kevin was gonna
go after the band.

He was gonna
go after me personally.

That should've been
the telltale sign

that I was really lost.

We decided to hire a singer
by the name of Paul shortino.

He's more famously known
for playing the part

of the rock star Duke fame
in spinal tap.

But there was no saving
this situation.

The band completely and totally
imploded.

And we all went our separate
ways.

In 1990, when my mother
passed away, out of nowhere,

I get a phone call from Kevin.

He felt really bad
about my mom passing away,

what a sweet woman
she was, you know.

And my mom really liked Kevin.

This was the beginning
of the two of us

resuming our friendship
for the rest of his life.

And he said, "drugs
are not a part of my life."

And with that statement, I
found myself back in quiet riot.

And with that statement, I

But make no mistake.

In the '90s, there was no love,
not only for quiet riot,

but for this type of music.

I describe being an
'80s metalhead--

In the '90s like being a doctor

who specialized in a form
of medicine,

dedicated his entire life,

and then they found a cure.

We were no longer
playing to stadiums.

All these bands

and life had been so glorious.

And now we were literally,
all of us, you know,

on the balls of our ass,

going from town
to town in a van,

for a few hundred people.

It sucked.

One of the crowning moments

of gigs in the '90s was playing

the much-coveted nudestock.

Quiet riot has reunited
for a comeback tour.

And today they're headlining,
not at Madison square garden,

and today they're headlining,

but at turtle lake resort,

which happens to be
a nudist camp.

We were playing to a lot
of genitalia.

Nothing could persuade
the band to drop their pants.

Call it performance anxiety.

And the Simpsons had an episode

where they actually made fun
of quiet riot

for playing state fairs.

Some crappy rock band
from the 1940s.

Hey, we've played more state
fairs than the Beatles.

- Yeah, that's right.

Little do they know
that state fairs pay so good.

Some nights, it was tumbleweeds.

there was nobody out there.

We didn't care. All of a sudden,
in the 2000s, a miracle happens.

There's this nostalgia movement
having to do with '80s bands.

We could start doing festivals
again.

And everything was possible.

Kevin was at the top
of his game.

And the amazing thing
is that when Kevin passed away,

it was as if he didn't matter.

So when Sally Steele
called me up

about participating
in the Vegas rock awards,

because they were gonna
honor Kevin,

because they were gonna

I jumped at the opportunity

to maybe try to make things
right.

I want to talk about a dear
friend of mine that passed away.

I was very upset.

I'm not gonna mention any names.

But other award shows
and the grammys--I'm sorry--

Didn't even mention his passing.

And he left us way too soon.

And we have an incredible
combination of musicians

that are gonna help pay tribute.

I also missed the idea of being

As difficult
as it is for me after 27 years

to sit behind a drum set
and not see Kevin

in front of me, it's something
I still want to do.

Because that's what I do.

He made me
so hysterical all the time.

Well, he always told me that

his two best audiences
were you and me.

I know, I know.

You know, the last thing
that I ever considered would be

to try to do quiet riot
without Kevin.

do we keep the music going?

My only consideration

always was how you were
gonna feel about it,

because at the end of the day,

your opinion is the only opinion
that matters in this.

to move forward with this,

I had discussed the situation
with both Chuck and Alex,

who were in the last version of
the quiet riot band with Kevin.

Chuck Wright, the guy
is so talented.

There is pretty much nothing
that Chuck cannot play.

And one of the issues
that Chuck has had,

he actually played bass
on the song bang your head.

But Rudy always gets the credit

Yeah, it's always been
a challenge for me,

because that album was so big.

Metal health,
10 million records sold.

And on the back,
you turn that album over,

there's pictures of four guys.

small, it says bass guitar

this is something that happened,

He was a great bass player

riot again is to reestablish

who I am to the band
and my history with the band

And basically, I'm a footnote.

I accept that right now.

But it'd be nice to change
that a little bit.

I didn't think
the band would go on.

I was very surprised to get
the phone call from Frankie

but also very happy.

I call him a kid because he's
the youngest guy in the band.

He had a lot of rough edges
when he first joined the band.

He enjoyed having a good time,
24-7.

But Kevin and I got him
out of those habits of his.

I got it pretty bad,
between Kevin and Frankie.

I mean, any given morning

you'd roll off the tour bus
at 8:00 in the morning

And I'm the new guy.

Like, these guys have been
touring together forever.

And I had sweatpants on,

and I was pouring a cup

And Frankie just turned around
real quick and pants down,

right in front of everybody.

That kind of shit.
It was out of love.

But he's a great kid,
goofy as the day is long.

He was very excited about it.

He'd always been the new guy

and kind of the butt

And here was his chance to get

as an equal and a contributor.

At first, I thought,

yes, this is something
I definitely want to do.

And I'm glad
that Chuck's involved.

But yeah, the next question
is, well, who's gonna sing?

a revolving door of musicians.

The final lineup is Kevin,
me, Chuck, and Carlos.

We get a record deal.

But Chuck isn't as committed

as we would like
and is replaced by Rudy.

The label wants us

We decide to bring back

We now have the classic

So then on our second album,

who is now known
as Chuck right now.

Because I would be there,
and then I'd be gone.

Kevin, who has burned more

and pat, who was fired,

replaced by Bobby,
who quits and is replaced by me.

Bjorn is fired. Ty joins.

Ty is fired. Freddy joins.

Freddy leaves. Chuck rejoins.

Chuck is fired. Rudy returns.

Kevin quits. I fire myself.

In 2004,
Kevin and I reform quiet riot

with Alex grossi
and, yes, Chuck Wright.

After years of ups, downs,

and sideways, the band
finally has a stable lineup.

But in 2007, Kevin dies,
and quiet riot ends.

Or so I thought.

Replacing a guy in a band

a lot of logistics to it.

of do it on the down low.
