Paul Rudell,
internationally known violinist

and founder of the Rudell Music
Conservatory here in New York

was found murdered tonight
on a New York street.

knife.

New York Police report
that less than one hour ago,

following a rehearsal
for the charity concert

he was to give next week,

Mr. Rudell was apparently
set upon and fatally wounded

by a man who then ran off
directly past two eyewitnesses.

The suspect,
27-year-old Louis Brocco,

himself a violinist,
was apprehended

only a few blocks from the scene
and is now in custody.

As yet, no motive for
the slaying has been revealed,

though it has been learned
that Brocco was a student

of Rudell's
at the Maestro's Conservatory.

Further, the knife apparently
used in the brutal slaying

and which was recovered
by the police at the scene...

The boy, Brocco,
was a student of Paul Rudell.

Now, he knew Rudell
well enough to know

when and where
he might be rehearsing.

Brocco's own knife
was the murder weapon.

And two eye-witnesses
saw it happen.

to correct you there, chief,

but they didn't see it happen.

What they saw was Brocco
standing over Mr. Rudell.

Now right there
attached to my report,

the lab sheet confirms
that the bloodstains

started 20 feet farther back
into the alley.

I just don't think that, uh,
that Brocco would've knifed him

and then stuck around
while the old fellow

crawled 20 feet farther
towards the street.

No, sir, I-- I just think
that he came on him

after the fact,
that's what I think.

Well, professionally, I'd say
you might be absolutely right.

But we can't begin to know that

until the boy is represented
by counsel

then we can question him.

However, let me play the, uh,
devil's advocate for a minute.

Just what, exactly, was Brocco
doing in the vicinity?

And, too, he did have the old,
proverbial motive.

What was the motive?

Well, homicide talked
to Rudell's granddaughter.

Now, it seems she met Brocco
only once in her life,

then suddenly, out of nowhere,

he began sending her
love letters.

She, apparently,
sent them back unanswered.

So he wrote one last letter

in which he suggested that, uh,

her grandfather,
the late Paul Rudell,

had turned her against Brocco

because Brocco wasn't yet
a good enough violinist.

Huh.

Well, of course,
I didn't know any of that.

But, uh, well,
I still have these feelings.

And, uh, if I don't follow
through with 'em, I...

You see, chief,

what if... what if this boy
that I apprehended,

what if he helps convict himself
just because he's a...

he's a little bit unusual?

somewhat less than lovely.
