[Episode 31]

What does this mean?

Its meaning is very obvious!

This unfaithful brat is breaking off the engagement!

Master! Master! Master! You're asked to go into the palace urgently!

His Majesty is not well.

- Honey, I have to go. - Okay.

Let's go! Now!

Yes.

Count Xie, how is His Majesty?

Did His Majesty summon us for the royal succession?

Two princes and Her Majesty are all with His Majesty.

Please be careful with your words.

Your Majesty, how is His Majesty now?

Yeah.

His Majesty is all good.

Count Cheng'an, His Majesty wants to talk to you.

A man should be true to his words.

Your Majesty.

Rong Xia.

The crown prince is too gentle.

I'm worried about

the regime and the people of Daye.

Don't worry, Your Majesty. I'll assist His Highness.

In any case, the people and regime of Daye

will be deemed as priority.

I...

am indebted to you.

For my mistakes and trespasses,

I'll ask for forgiveness from your father

in the netherworld.

Your Majesty.

Rong Xia...

Come here.

The Emperor of Daye

has gone up to heaven. Ring the bell.

Let Heaven and Earth mourn together.

Your Majesty! Your Majesty!

- Your Majesty! Your Majesty! - Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Father!

Father!

Father!

Count Cheng'an has got the testamentary edict.

Bring the imperial robe I made for Prince Luo, and make our plan happen.

Okay.

Wait.

If Count Cheng'an goes back on his word,

what will you and His Highness do to him?

Unexpectedly, a vicious person like you

can also be worried for somebody.

I just worry that if this is uncovered, we'll all be sentenced to death.

Don't worry. I have made arrangements.

If Count Cheng'an goes back on his words, the whole Ban family will be gone. [Ban Mansion]

Who's there?

Your little sister is the only female who dares to do this here.

Just get into the imperial palace, I'll handle this.

Don't worry. We are still allies now.

I won't hurt her.

Please, don't let me go.

Once Prince Luo knows that it's you who sent me to pass the message,

even Young Master can't protect you.

The Ban family has been good to me. Now they are in danger, I can't just sit aside and do nothing.

But if they find out…

Yun, I'm begging you!

With my brother here, they can't do anything to me.

Okay. I'll go.

Just go!

You seem in a hurry. Where are you going?

Shi Feixian! Yun is my personal maid.

Don't you dare harm her!

What do you mean?

The whole imperial harem of Daye will be under your control fin the future, my sister.

How would I dare harm her?

Who's your sister? Suit yourself if you want to be the empress.

Don't be like this.

In this play, you have to play your role well.

- Wang De. - Yes, Your Highness.

Why are Crown Prince and Count Cheng'an still not here?

Your Highness, I already sent people over a few minutes ago.

Should I go take a look?

- Be quick. - Yes.

Do not bother.

Luo.

- What…? - What is going on?

What is he doing?

Where's the crown prince?

How dare you! How dare you wear an imperial robe?

Insolence!

Aren't you all here to welcome me ascend the throne?

Your Highness, according to our law,

the heir to the throne should be the crown prince.

Count Cheng'an, read the testamentary edict.

The testamentary edict.

Jiang Zhang, the first prince,

shall become the vassal king of Shu

and go to his fief.

Jiang Luo, the second prince,

shall be my heir and ascend the throne.

Count Cheng'an, you must be kidding!

His Majesty favored the crown prince all along, how come…?

It's impossible! That can't be the real testamentary edict!

You are… You are making it up!

I wouldn't dare.

- Guards! - Yes.

Escort Empress Dowager back to her palace.

- Yes! - Yes!

Jiang Luo! You're usurping the throne! Where is the crown prince?

How dare you!

- Take him down and have him beheaded! - Yes!

Jiang Luo! You're committing high treason! Jiang Luo! Let go of me!

Let go!

Issue my decree.

Xie Chongjin shall be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister.

And Shi Chonghai shall be reinstated.

Those who meet Jiang Zhang secretly shall be sentenced to death.

Xie Chongjin!

Mr. Shi, where are you taking the vassal king of Shu to?

Shut up! He's the emperor!

He hasn't said anything yet. It's not your turn to talk.

His Majesty issued a decree which ordered you to go to the imperial mausoleum

to guard the late emperor's tomb.

Xie Chongjin, how dare you usurp the throne!

Lord Shi,

I can't implicate you and Suyue anymore.

I'll go with you.

Your Highness, it's not time to give up yet. Please don't…

The title of vassal king is fine. Father is gone.

I don't have many loved ones left.

Sir, please.

Count Cheng'an, this is unexpected to me.

Hua has not woken up yet, and you are committing treason!

The engagement between me and Princess Ban was broken off last night.

Whatever I do, it doesn't have anything to do with a deserted woman.

Rong Xia! I must have been blind when I agreed to marry my daughter to you!

Ban! Ban! That's enough.

Blabbermouth! Don't stop me!

- Today, I must teach this brat a lesson! - Ban!

- Ban! Ban! - Get off!

- Ban! - Let go!

- Ban Huai. - Ban!

Stop being like this, or it won't look good.

- Take him down. - Yes!

You dirty rat! Ungrateful bastard! You unfaithful brat!

You'll pay for this!

This is… This is the token of love between you and Ban Hua.

So you're the one who poisoned her!

You misunderstood.

I'm a guilty person already, how would I dare do that?

Why do you have the antidote then?

I'm not an ungrateful person.

It's Xie Chongjin who drugged Ban Hua. I failed to stop him.

But thanks to the love from His Majesty, I got this antidote for Ban Hua.

You'd never be so kind-hearted.

I just hope you can get what you want.

When you love something but can't get it,

that's the worst kind of pain.

I don't want you to have a life-long regret

just like me.

What's your purpose?

My purpose is not important.

The important thing is whether you want to save Ban Hua or not.

It seems you still don't trust me.

But I have to remind you, there's not much time left for Ban Hua.

Don't hesitate any longer, or you'll regret it.

[Ban Mansion]

Honey, it's working! It's working!

Lord Shi, you saved our family. You are our savior!

Madam! Please don't. Duke Ban. Young Master Ban.

All I wish for is for the princess to be well.

Honey, Hua has some hope now. She has some hope!

- Hua! - Your Grace! - Your Grace!

Hua! You are finally awake.

- What are you saying? - Hua, you are awake.

Mother, what happened in the imperial palace?

Forget about that. You just woke up; your priority is to get healthy.

Don't hide anything from me.

If something happened in the palace, Rong Xia will be in danger.

- I want to see him immediately. - Hua!

Your Grace, Count Cheng'an has broken off the engagement! Stop worrying about him!

Rocky!

It's impossible. Help me change.

I'll go to Rong Mansion now.

[Rong Mansion] Co… Come and have a look!

[Rong Mansion] What…? What an ungrateful man! An… An unfaithful brat!

The greatest gentleman in Daye? The greatest jerk in my opinion!

Yeah, that's right. Princess Ban is really miserable.

Count Cheng'an is no different from those other men.

Yeah, you are right. Since ancient times,

- unfaithful men are mostly scholars. - Yes.

Luckily, we are all illiterate.

Young Master, ignore them. Let's get back in.

It's okay.

Hearing these makes me feel a little better.

Young Master, don't say that. I know that if you were only concerned for yourself,

you could have simply ran away with Her Grace.

How you're dealing with Prince Luo right now

is to save the lives of those important officials,

the crown prince and Ban family.

But they don't understand that. They can't even tell right from wrong.

It's not their fault.

The late emperor wanted me to assist the crown prince,

but I…

I helped Prince Luo ascend the throne.

Young Master…

You are lying!

Princess Ban?

Count Cheng'an would never work for Jiang Luo!

Your Grace, he has broken off the engagement, why are you still defending him?

Yeah, that's right.

Whether I get married or not is none of your business.

Your Grace, you shouldn't talk like this. We all have good intentions.

I don't need your good intentions.

Your Grace, you are being stupid. No wonder you keep getting rejected in your engagements.

Say that again and I'll let you pay.

Let's go.

What's wrong with her?

Rong Xia, I know you are in there.

And I heard about what happened in the palace. But I know that's not true.

You are not like that, are you?

Rong Xia, if you're under any difficult circumstances,

tell me! All right?

Young Master, talk to her, please.

Rong Xia! You coward!

You promised my grandma you'd take care of me for a lifetime.

But now, you dare not even see me.

Young Master!

Rong Xia.

Are you quite finished?

Rong Xia.

Our engagement is over already.

If you still don't want to let go,

I can tell you in person now.

From now on, we have nothing to do with each other.

You are lying, right?

Rong Xia, you don't mean it, do you?

I'll never forget what you said when you proposed to me.

Don't tell me you took that seriously.

My purpose for getting close to you was to investigate my family tragedy.

I would say anything to achieve my goal. I'm sorry if you

took that seriously.

What am I then? A stepping stone?

Yes.

Now that I'm over the wall, I don't need you anymore.

Rong Xia! Listen carefully!

The engagement is between two parties.

It's me who gives you up today.

Grandma, if it were you,

[Princess Royal Dening's Tablet] you would know how to deal with this.

Lord Shi.

They would be so sad to see you like this.

[Princess Royal Dening's Tablet]

[Princess Royal Dening's Tablet] I'm bad with words. I don't know how to comfort you.

If you want to cry, just cry.

In this world, those who really care about you,

don't want you to be tough.

They just want you to be happy and safe.

Please pardon me for being ineloquent.

You are right.

Ban Hua doesn't live for anyone else.

In this world, there are still many things I need to protect.

Lord Shi, thank you.

Count Cheng'an! Her Grace loves you so much!

But you broke off the engagement and left her to die.

How could you do that to her, and to her family?

Lord Shi,

I had no choice.

From now on, please take care of her.

It's you.

Feixian gave me the antidote because of you?

Lord Shi, you love Her Grace deeply.

I know you can protect her well.

Who do you think you are to decide her future?

There will be turbulent events in Daye soon. I have no choice.

The Ban family is in danger. Please take care of them.

Why are you here?

I'm here to send you the phoenix robe.

Tomorrow morning, you'll become the empress.

Go back to tell Jiang Luo, he can kill me if he wants to,

I'll never wear that phoenix robe.

It's not that His Majesty doesn't want to kill you.

But the regime is not stable yet, so I can't become the empress now.

You decide the fate of your family. If you die now,

so will your brothers and parents.

Whether to wear it or not,

it's your own decision.

His Majesty, pursuant to Heaven's will, hereby announces:

Father! Mother!

Ban Huai, Duke Jingting, ignored the law and did shameful conduct.

The evidence is certain.

He shall be dismissed from his position and his salaries shall be refunded.

The property of his family shall be confiscated.

All of the Ban family shall become civilians.

Ban Hua! Run!

Oh, no, the whole household will be conficated. This is not good!

Come on! Hurry!

What are you doing there? Move! Move faster.

Hurry! Hurry!

- Be careful with that vase. We're trading that for food! - Quickly!

Hua, do I have to resign?

Father, I don't know if my dream will come true or not,

but we have to make our move first.

We should get as far away as possible from the capital.

Father, this is the Pardon Token the late emperor gave you after Grandma left.

Take this with you.

While I'm in the palace, Jiang Luo might send people here again.

No. You should take this.

There are many good officials, I don't think he dares to go over the line.

Honey, these are all that we have.

Give these to His Majesty. Be careful with what you say, don't make him angry.

I'm sorry for this.

I've been with you for half of my life and I have been happy and satisfied.

As long as we are all safe as a family, some hardships are nothing.

Yeah, Father. I buried some jewelry in the suburbs with Hua.

We can dig them out later. They'll support us for some time.

Yeah, let's act according to the plan.

Later, we'll move to the house outside the capital.

Father, after you resign, go to the inn in the east and talk to the owner.

He has prepared a carriage and will send you out of the capital.

Your Highness, you are suffering because of my lack of ability.

Rong Xia, don't blame yourself.

Look at me. I'm all good.

Please rest assured, Your Highness. Lord Shi and I will figure out a way to get Daye back to your hands,

and finish the task the late emperor gave me.

Rong Xia, I've been thinking these days.

If Luo could be a wise emperor who loves his people,

that would also be Daye's blessing.

Your Highness, once Jiang Luo steadies his regime, he'd kill you for sure.

Precisely because of that, I don't want you to risk yourselves.

Lord Shi and I will be careful.

Your Highness, please take care.

Daye still needs to depend on you in the future.

Someone secretly met Jiang Zhang?

It seems that my throne is still in danger.

Your Majesty, in my opinions,

this is not the key problem.

What is it then?

The people.

As long as Your Majesty is admired by all the officials and all the people,

nobody is going to threaten your position.

You are right. But people's hearts are hard to win over.

What should I do?

Make an example out of somebody.

Duke Jingting,

I just ascended the throne and your whole family is resigning.

Are you unsatisfied with me?

I wouldn't dare. It's just because I'm sick

and Hua just recovered from her illness, so she needs to be taken care of.

That's why I'm resigning.

You got sick right after I ascended the throne?

Are you saying it's me who caused your illness?

Your Majesty! Don't be angry, Your Majesty.

Duke Jingting has been enjoying his position without doing any job,

having him is just a waste of money.

Your Majesty may as well dismiss him and let him go back to his hometown.

That would save Daye a lot of money. That's a good thing.

You are right. My court can't keep someone who is good-for-nothing.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Duke Jingting, the late emperor favored your family for so many years,

and you just handed in so little?

Your Majesty, Princess Royal and old General Ban have rendered great service

and everybody knows it, please consider that and have mercy.

Your Majesty, I think you should ask for Count Cheng'an's opinion.

After all, he had an engagement with the Ban family,

so he must know their situation better than anybody.

Count Cheng'an.

Your Majesty.

What do you think?

Your Majesty, in my opinions, you should search his house

and confiscate his property before making any decision.

You are requiting kindness with enmity! Count Cheng'an, you are a beast!

I'm just sticking to the facts and doing my job.

You…! Our Ban family must have been all blind!

Your Majesty, Duke Jingting didn't do anything wrong, searching his house might panic the people.

Mr. Shi, the Ban family has been enjoying an extravagant life for so long.

It's time to do an investigation and let the people know the truth.

Your Majesty, all the valuable things in my family are here.

Please have mercy.

Your Majesty, I agree with Count Cheng'an.

We should search his house first.

Issue this decree:

Duke Jingting and his family have been extravagant.

From today on, the titles of Duke Jingting and Princess Fule shall be lifted.

Duke Jingting's mansion shall be searched and his property shall be confiscated.

Yes, Your Majesty.

By the way, Minister Xie,

remember to take back the Pardon Token given to the Ban family

by the late emperor.

[Sky-holding Gate]

Count Cheng'an!

Didn't you say you'd protect the Ban family? Why did you suggest the searching of his house?

Couldn't you see His Majesty was making an example out of him?

If I had defended the Ban family like what you did, the outcome would have been worse.

So, you did that on purpose?

Yes.

I'm sorry for being so impulsive.

It's okay.

But from now on, I hope that Lord Shi can hold different opinions with me as much as possible in the palace

to avoid rousing suspicion.

I understand.

There's something else I need you to do me a favor with.

Just say it.
