We're very fortunate in Balule,

it's a very beautiful place,
very diverse,

and the regions are very
different to one another.

Every one of the regions has
something

special about them.

I'm very privileged to be able

to do my job across the whole
area

and that's awesome,

because you never know what life
brings you

so while I can do it,

I appreciate every kilometre of
it.

Yeah, we're lucky, very
fortunate

to have forty kilometres

of the iconic Olifants River in
our reserve.

The Olifants is a really special
place for me

it takes me back to when I was a
kid.

My dad and I used to do trips,
just him and I to Kruger,

and Olifants was his favourite
camp.

So I've got many, many good
memories

along the river, special times.

Once you come to the Kruger
system

as a child, it sort of

gets in your blood and you
always look forward

to coming back and to be able to

live in the system now is the
ultimate.

You know, South Africa is
blessed

with a lot of bush and a lot of
wildlife

but the system is, there's just
something special

about it.Waking up here is a
blessing and you never

take it for granted. And I think
if you ever do,

then you're not in the right
place.

But every day I'm thankful to be

here and I hate not being here.

Whenever I'm not here

I can't wait to get back.

So in my role as head warden,
there's

conservation issues, wildlife
management,

ecological management and then
security.

So obviously with the rhino
situation,

that's where the focus is, but
it's actually

keeping the entire protected
area secure.

So by default all the species
are protected.

My main contacts are the
regional wardens.

Balule's got ten regions.

I think I'm very fortunate with
the

team that I've got, great bunch.

Rian is the York warden,

but he's also my deputy head
warden,

and we work very closely on
everything,

especially to do with rhino
dehorning, rhino

relocations, anything to do with
top species.

Rian is also integral into

our reaction unit, which is a

separate thing from the warden
core,

it's a dedicated reaction to

poaching incidents.

..."check it, one on the left's
got a horn,

the one that's down now"...

He's been on Balule a long time,

he's got a hell of a lot of
institutional knowledge,

but he's also a no bull dust
kind of guy.

...This is the other two we were
looking for...

...should be three...

He'll let his feelings be known

but also take the piss if he

gets a chance, you know.

This cruiser, this is not any

cruiser. This is my baby. I can

tell you one thing if there's

a cruiser in this bush that's
done

a lot of work, it is this one.

And it's never, never,

let us down. It's only

one car that lasts out here and

that's a Land Cruiser, proudly

made by Toyota.

It's not a job,

It's a lifestyle. You need to

live for it and wake up in the

morning and sometimes go to bed

at one and tomorrow carry on
with

something else. You know, I
suppose

this is one of the joys of the
job

working out here. Never know
what's

around every corner.

A nice little

breeding load of elephant.

There's no, no morning

when you wake up and have a cup

of coffee and know exactly what

you're going to do. It could be

from a fence break to a vehicle

breaking down to a rhino needing

dehorning.

Out here it's not all just about

glamour and cowboys and guns.

There is no day that is planned.

You've got to always be ready
for

whatever and I suppose that's
what

makes it a nice job. You're not

sitting in front of a laptop
every

day.

This morning we had a call of a

young white rhino cow that's in
an

area that's not a friendly area
at all.

From a rhino horn poaching point
of view,

but also from a bush meat
poaching point of view.

There's a number of things that

quickly need to happen including

getting a trailer, getting a
vet.

It's quite a distance to get out

there and security needs to go

with, since it's a volatile area

that you're going to go into.

Bruce has been in the air for

quite a while and he spotted the

animal luckily.

Bruce had been in the air for

close to seven hours so we had
to

relieve him because he was
pretty

much going to run out of fuel.
He

couldn't stay up there forever.

We're in a bit of a rush here

unfortunately but there's no
point

in rushing rushing otherwise
we're

going to make a mistake here.

Bruce has only got ten minutes
of

fuel left. Okay we're going to
get airborn

now and take over from him so he
can go.

But we're going to hover high,
high up there,

so we can just keep that rhino
visual,

so if you know the way please
jump with Ian,

because these guys

have the radio so they'll be..

to the helicopter.

Jerry and Bruce, being twin
brothers,

the communication there is

excellent and there's aviation

safety involved and the two
pilots

need to be so aware of where one

another is because we're
occupying

literally the same airspace and
with

them two it's absolutely
seamless you know

they're just totally in sync.

So the chopper's had to take
over

keeping eyes on him which does

complicate it a little bit
because

they do run from the chopper
where

as with the spotted plane they
stay

nice and stationary they're not

frightened by the aeroplane so
it

could be a little bit more
mobile now

and obviously it raises the cost

quite a bit if the chopper has
to

hover and play a monitoring role

rather than just an active
darting role.

We just hope that the animal

goes down in a spot

that's favourable for loading.

Every single wild rhino is

hell of important. Yes the costs

are astronomical but it's almost

irrelevant.

We do whatever we can to make
sure

that everyone that's in danger
is

protected.

So as soon as the animal is on
the

ground and the dart was seen and
the

animal went down you know the
trailer

has to be put in position the
animal

has to be rolled over in a happy
spot

where she can be safe.

It's all hands on deck.

...This way, I want to pull him
around so

that we can push him to the
right.

One, two, three.

One, two, three.

One, two, three.

Okay...

So the critical moments in this

operation pretty much are
guesstimating

the size of the animal and then
mixing

the dart correctly for the size
of the

animal so it's not a relative
overdose

or anything like that.

White rhino in particular are
very, very

sensitive to the drugs we use.

So as soon as we get to them
they're

quite shaky, they've got their
heads

on the ground and we'll just
straight

into the ear vein we'll give
them a

partial reversal and that just
wakes

them up a little bit and they
breathe a lot

better, and they're a lot more
stable like that.

Cows are extremely important for

preservation of rhinos because
they're

the ones who carry the
offspring.

I've just sent the chip number
to Zola.

Did you sent her the notches
too?

No.

Okay, I'll quickly..

Within five minutes I'll know
where

she was originally dehorned,
where

she's from, what's her normal
home

range and we can actually try
and

release her back there.

I got photos from Ian of the ear
notches,

and as soon as I saw them I was
like

no, this is our animal.

This is an animal that we
notched,

darted, we know exactly where
it's

from, we know the mother,
everything.

It's your rhino.

It was on the 30th of March it
was

seen by you, this rhino.

We just see now that six weeks
ago

she was quite far in the south
of

Balule so it's been a long trek
to

get here.

We're just putting on a foot
collar

so we can track it once we

take it back home.

It was confirmed that it was one
of

my lady that's walked all the
way

that side.

It's not too impressive firs..

gave her another prodder behind
the

bum.

Quite a heart touching mom..

to realise that it's not just a

rhino that we went and saved but
it

was one of my rhinos that we
went

and saved.

..."Line her up nicely, go a bit
left.

Go a bit left, left, left."...

" It needs to actually go back.

It needs to go back."

Now look, the loading went very

well so now the long part is

transporting it but because it's
a

cow we don't have to transport

it that far which really makes a
big

difference so that's good news.

"She's looking nice, she's not

head pressing too much."

"I'm just going to reverse out
like

that onto the road because
there's

a lot of sickle bush in front
here.

Sickle bush gives flat tyres.

We don't to go with those."

So now that we've got her loaded

we're on the way to Balule.

It's going to be a minimum of a

two hour drive back to where
we're

going to release her and because

of the speed it's going to have
to

be slow but manage the safety
until

it's on the open road and then

hopefully in two hours time
we'll be

releasing her back home.

There's a lot going on in
getting

that animal back here.

It's a heavy trailer, it's a
heavy

animal, it's a fragile animal.

Only time you can really

brief properly is when the crate

is opened and she walks out
nicely.

Then we all sit down and have a
beer.

..."One, two, three"...

So it's great to have my girl
back on the

reserve, and now it's

just to get that horn

taken off, you know... So, we
weren't able

to do it during the

capture and the release due

to a number of reasons, but
we'll focus

on it and make it a

priority in the next couple

of days to make sure that horn
comes

off and that she's

safe back home as well.

In the last couple of years, we
sure had

a different

generation coming through here.

Quite a few young guys with new

enthusiasm and new ideas.

There's some good kids around
the block

here now. They had to

learn quickly a lot as well.

You know, anti-poaching, it's
mundane

patrol, same patrol in

tough conditions. Every day, day
in,

day out, you know, every day is
Monday.

Okay, let's go. We

use a lot of camera traps as

early detection, so we do a lot
of camera

trap maintenance, you

know, checking that all the

cameras are working, that
they've got

batteries, are they sending

are they not. And then if

there's any incursions or tracks
found or

short trip boards or

anything on the reserve,

we will react and follow up on
those kind

of things. Okay, we

just need to check this

camera because it wasn't sending
last night.

There's not action all the time

like everyone might think.

So when there is action, you

know, obviously we're

ready to go. I've wanted to do

this for my whole life. So when
I was at

school, I used to do some

boxing and combat sports. I

like that sort of stuff and
always loved

the guns. I became a guide, so

I was going that route and

then the whole rhino poaching
crisis

started. So there I could

marry the two, you know, the
love

for nature and then the love for
action.

The weapons that we're

going to be using is the weapons

that we carry on a daily basis.
They are

AK-47s. Yeah, I think

people are shocked by some of
the

equipment we have. I mean, if
you had to

see us fully kit it up, I

mean, we've got the handguns,

we've got the vests, the camera
uniforms,

thermals, we've got helmets,
we've got

night vision goggles,

AK-47s, so we are fully kitted
out. It's

crazy to think that we need all
of this

equipment to chase two or

three guys with a two litre coke
bottle

full of water, a backpack and

a rifle. I love my job. Yeah.

I always say it's a crime of
passion. We

definitely here because we

love it, not for anything else.

Yeah, protection... Everyone
ready?...Okay, let's go...

We are here to protect every

single animal. If you're

gonna come in here and poach a
squirrel,

we're gonna treat you just

as harshly as a rhino poacher.

...Okay, make safe... We don't
sign our

contract here saying to

protect rhino, we protect
everything.

Everything... Okay, same thing
guys, you

understand? Yes....

They like there guns, they like
their trucks

obviously quite a lot as well,
so their

camous are always nicely

ironed and they forget their

names as well because obviously
they have

to put it on the side over

there to make sure they remember

who they are.

My name is Jacques, I also

form part of the reaction

unit for the whole of Balule.

My main priority is security in
the sense

of anti poaching patrols,

meaning going out morning

and afternoon, sometimes even
night time

to see if we can't find

any signs of humans that have

potentially entered into the
reserve and

then also just to monitor

general animal movement and

especially obviously rhinos, but
then

just to see what else is

obviously going about.

Jacques is an incredible young
man. He's

if not the best but one of

the best sort of bush skills

person that I know. Jacques is
one of the

few guys that I would

just follow him blind

into the bush, if we needed to
go

somewhere. He's the guy I'd

walk behind. I mean he's just

incredible, especially in the
night time

and I hear that saying a lot
because

people need to grow up here. He
doesn't,

he's just absolutely fine.

I must say for me tracking, one
of the

things that I love about it

is that when you actually find

animals and you sit and you look
at them

and you see an elephant

being an elephant or an impala,

being an impala, without it
knowing that

you're there and it's like that
is

exactly how it would

have been 50 to 100 years ago.

It does take practice to see

things that other people can't

see but the thing is that people
can see

it. It's just that they just

need to know what to look for.

This over here is Letta, my
lovely baby

girl. I've had the absolute

privilege of having her for

four and a half years. She's the
reserve

detection dog. She's imprinted

on certain scents which she'll

indicate on if she smells them.
The scent

that she basically looks

for is firearm, ammunition,

rhino horn, ivory and pangolin
scale. So

if you find any of those

scents she'll indicate.

We work together as a team. It's
not just

her or not just me. So

at the end of the day

if one fails, the other one
fails. So we

work together and we

love each other doing that.

She's such a real sweetie. She's
so

sweet. She's such a happy

dog. She just wants to play,

if there's other dogs around,
Letta's

the one that wants to play.

We're much more closer to our
dogs than I

think what most people are.

So we do form like a family.

Yeah it's me and Letta and

then it's Colin and Koda.

She's the nippier one.

That's a good puppy dog.

She likes to make friends but
she also

likes to break the bond

sometimes a bit quick on that
one.

We've got Nick and Paige. Paige
is our

snack detector. She makes

sure that any snacks going

out of the reserve gets
apprehended. Come

Paige, Paige, Paige come.

She'll dispose of them as well.

David, David, David for skrull
did you copy?

Then obviously we've got Skrull
and

Zingela which they fit each

other because both of them are

just as skinny. I think Zingela
gives

Skrull a good run for his

money and then it's Callen and
Tia.

Obviously Tia being a hound.
They are the

dogs that don't sleep

that close to the pencil so th..

have much going on between

the ears unfortunately but

they've got extremely good
noses.

Mr Novak unfortunately chose the
breed

wiener to be his great guard
dog.

This is Kami's latest

addition to our anti-poaching
unit.

We're going to overwhelm them
with

cuteness so that they're off
their game

and then we'll get them.

You would never think that a
head warden

would have those little

dogs. He had two and everyone

gave him shit about it and I was
thinking

you know maybe his next

move he's going to get a

Malinois you know something that
will fit

the role a bit better and

then he ended up getting a third

one which I thought was pretty
cool

because that just shows you he
doesn't

give a shit how you know

people view him and what dogs he
has.

I think Ian's intention of
having those

cuties is definitely not for
chasing hard

core poachers down. It's
probably more

about what the women think about
the

little dogs around him.

Because I'm sure he grabs a lot
of

attention from women's side more
than

from poachers with those

two little wiener dogs.

My name is Nick Leuenberger and
in Balule

I'm the regional warden for the

Olifants River Conservancy,
which is a

section of Balule that's pretty
much in

the centre of the reserve.

My surname pretty much means
'lion on top

of a mountain', which is

quite apt seeing that we're now

in the game reserve. It worked
out quite

well. Destiny I think.

Come on now, come on let's go.
So I

live here with my wife

Kerry and we've been on this

journey together for now for
close to 20 years

..." Hey come on. Oh my

goodness. How are you
doing?...Good."

Then in the last couple of years

we've been joined by Paige

our little beagle and she's

just filled an integral part of
our

lives. She's a stress

reliever, she's an entertainer

and she's a great little working
dog as

well. It's a little family of
three.

So I've been on Balule now for
four

years. Game reserve life

is something quite unique

and it becomes your heartbeat of
every

day. So one of my favourite

parts of the day has been my

self and Paige, get to walk
along a road

like this. It's like

reading the morning newspaper

and seeing what the gossip's all
about.

What happened last night? You
know does

Margaret Impala have a new

boyfriend? Who knows? So it's
always nice

to see what tracks we can pick
up.

This is quite a unique track.
This long

snaking track down here.

It's quite a common species. We
don't

often see them there but

it's a Land Rover double
cab....2..

It's quite a dynamic

environment so we

jump from space to space

with this element of
unpredictability. So

yeah it makes it interesting

and it keeps it quite diverse.

So we've got a pack of wild dogs
coming

in from a game reserve on the
outskirts

of Balule called Selati. I think

they've been having some trouble

containing them in that reserve.

So I think they're going to

be looking to rehome them.

Joel and Jerry have been busy
the whole

morning. I think

they've been chasing this pack

for most of the day. The African
wild dog

is also known as Painted

Wolves. They are one of

Africa's most endangered
carnivores

purely because of habitat loss
and

pressure from human settlements.

So with the lack of wild
reserves these

days that puts that species
under threat.

..."Chris, other way. Yeah no no
full turn.

So full turn the other way,
other way,

other way, other way"...

Yeah this is our predator boma.
It's a

facility for injured predators

and snared animals to recover

before you release them back
out. There's

rhino boma's,

there's all sorts but these

are the predator ones. So we
..

gamble and built it and

yeah today it's being used.

..."Perfect dude. Now start to
spin that

way. So come full turn"...

It hasn't just been today.

It's been about three, four
week..

now of trying to catch a wild
dog pack on

Selati game reserve.

They've got quite a large pack
of dogs

that have bred really

successfully and unfortunately
some

of the individuals got to their

dispersing age and as they
wanted to sort

of move and leave the

reserve and find new natural
space as

wild dogs would naturally do

at this age, it was pulling the

rest of the pack with
them..."Guys shout

when we can stop at the back
there"...

So we picked off a few,

sort of decreased the pack size
over the

last sort of three weeks

but it's been helicopter

darting, ground darting, it's
pa..

know now this pack is

constantly pushing out. We
needed to

actually just decide listen
clean slate.

We're going to take this entire

population off the property

and so I called up Ian and I
said listen

we're in a panic here and he
said look

let's pop them in here.

The one thing we didn't discuss
is these

next 48 hours are going to

be critical. If you guys have

people to spare just to come and
check as

much as possible the

biggest thing is if they're
tr..

to dig and filling up and that
sort of

thing. We can also use the

drone to check that we can

actually park at the road and
come do a

quick recce with them.

Yeah, I mean that's cool if
they're

not skittish with the drone it's
a great

way to do it and it's a

great way to do it. It's amazing

like it's a perfect size boma
now that

when I release them in

here it feels too small

because I know exactly when they
come out

here they're just going

to smash these fences.

So we've got a whole bunch of
pups and a

couple of adults coming in today

and so it's the first time we're
going to

be able to use this facility so
it's

going to be quite exciting.

This is magic this is why we do
what we

do. This is conservation at its
core.

Here we are dealing with a
highly

endangered species removing

it from a problematic area and

hopefully relocating it into the
open system

Now considering

the status of the wild dogs

they are the perfect VIP

guest to have in our new
facility.

I am blessed to have the team
that we

have on this reserve.

Field range is a really tough
job it's

lots of miles underfoot

every day but it's critical

what they do you know detection
is

everything in this game and

with the vast tracts of land
that

we need to cover to have good
solid field

ranging team is essential.

It is tough conditions often you
you're

returning for for quite a

few hours you're encountering

dangerous game elephants and
buffalo and

hippo and whatever they may come
across.

The temperatures are quite high

especially in summer it

doesn't matter if it's 45
degrees out

there if we need to patrol

or follow up we are out there.

The threats that the guys will
face are

not just from dangerous

animals but you know if you're

coming across a heavily armed
gang of

poachers they might find

themselves in a situation where

they'll have to defend
themselves should

there be a violent contact.

Often these guys are in the
field for a

long time without having

contact with their family so

you know it's a job that

deserves a lot of respect.

Training together as a team is
very

important and one thing that

we try to do is we try and keep

that team constant because the
more you

practice together the more

well oiled you will be as a
machine.

Okay guys this morning we're

just going to do a normal dog

trail for the dog. You guys

are going to walk from this road
and

you're going to head down to
that

drainage between Big and Double
Dam.

I think it's four roads total,

once you've crossed road number
four, then you go

maybe 100-200 meters into the
bush and

then you can wait there for

us. You guys copy?

It's so important when you get
to a live op is

that everyone knows what

they're doing how to do it

there's a lot less communication
and

everything just runs smoothly
that's why

it's just incredibly

important that you get that
training in.

Okay cool we'll see you guys at
the end.

So what we're doing and it's
what we do

on a regular basis is we'll get
two or three field

rangers to lay a track and they

essentially walk like poachers
and then

we'll let it age and it

depends you one hour, three
hours

overnight it depends you know
what

training you want to do.

And then we will go to the start
of the

track with the dog and

we'll follow up and we're just

simulating a live operation as
if the field

rangers have called in tracks or
we've

got a camera trap.

We just track with the dog until
we get

to point B which is

actually finding the guys

and yeah it's just simulating
that whole

follow-up situation.

So funny she literally doesn't
let me

cuddle her when she's

excited it's quite interesting.

Tia. Tia. And the anti poaching
team

they're an incredible bunch of
very

enthusiastic and very

passionate people. The team is
led up by

Callen Hartman.

You've got to admit she's a
bloody

beautiful dog.

He's then got two field ranger
scouts,

and they operate as a

sort of elite follow-up unit.

Corporal you must just radio me
when you

guys pass the fourth road

and you're about to stop.

Training can be divided into
learning new

skills and then practice.

Practice is really important

because the dogs need to be
worked every

single day so that

you're completely prepared for

whatever scenario you're
presented with.

And it's imperative that

you can trust your dog because

every time you second guess

your dog you lose the guy.

Tia absolutely loves this. A lot
of

people think you know with
working dogs

that they don't have

a great life they spend a lot of
time..

the kennel but as you can

see how excited she is, she

literally lives for this and
you'll see

while she's working it's

literally her favourite thing

to do so yeah she absolutely
loves this,

she lives for it actually.

We wanted to make sure

that our philosophy is that our
hounds

and our dogs form meaningful

relationships with their

handlers so that essentially
they're

companions and when they really
need to

work they can do that as

well. So they've really got a
dual

function and when you see Tia
and Callen

working together you

can see that they've got a
..

Tia is three years old and we
got her as

a puppy, so we actually trained

her from the ground up which

was a very special experience.
She became

operational when she

was about one years old

and we literally built her up
from doing

one minute old tracks

and she's done over 15 hour

long tracks over ten kilometres
so yeah

she's fully operational now.

These poaches that come in here
you're

not going to out run them,

you're not going to out walk
them

they're hard and they're tough
they're

bush wise and the dog is the
thing that

gives you an advantage

that you need in order to gain
the ground

that you need and without

a dog you are farting in the

wind it's just you need them.

If you don't have good dogs
you're on the

back foot. The biggest

problem with our guys that have

got good dogs is I think they
spend way

more time with the dogs

than with the wives and

it's important for us but

not great for the wives.

So it's first light, it's the
crack of

dawn this morning and we're

just out here checking the

predator boma. We've got the
wild dogs in

here and we're just doing

our daily checks to see how

the pack's doing. This morning
we're also

going to be feeding them

dropping off some meat for them.

Essentially what we're looking
for is

we're looking for any

signs of digging that the

dogs want to try and dig out or
anything

else digging in. It's

quite a big responsibility to

look after 16 wild dogs in an
enclosure

you know they are very hungry

animals so we're going to be

feeding them quite a bit it's
quite labor

intensive. In the long

run this is going to be

an incredible conservation..

beautiful her coloration.

Gorgeous animal there. I think
wild dogs

for me it's um they're a

species that sort of epitomises

freedom. They're a species that
uses a

huge amount of habitat.

They're always on the move.

They can range from one corner
of the

reserve to the next. You know

for me it's just uh the pure

essence of African freedom is
the African

wild dog. We're

extremely privileged to have
this

facility on our section. You
know we get

to look after and be

custodians of these 16 wild dogs

eventually. So it's a special
moment you

know at sunrise when the

rest of the world is still

sleeping we're out here chec..

pack of wild dogs.

...right so this impala's set up
over here...

Hopefully they'll come in
quickly.

Yeah let's open that side
gate...come and get it boys...

Come and get it.Breakfast is
served.

Let's not forget this is the
first

feeding we're doing this

particular pack. So let's see

let's see how it works. If it
doesn't

work then we'll just move

it closer towards the gate.

Yeah, I think it's a..

Let's have a quick peek...We
tried to put

the impala carcass into the

separate feeding enclosure

but it's also new for them.
There's some

closure so they were a little

bit nervous and didn't really

want to enter that enclosure. So
what we

did is we just pulled that

carcass a little bit closer

towards the gate and so they had
a visual

reference to that impala.

As soon as we did that took just
a few

minutes they then pulled

the impala carcass into the

main enclosure and started
feeding.

..."they're off the fence now
hey?"...

I think it'll take a couple

of feeding attempts just to get
them to

feed within that dedicated

feeding section. As it is

new for us it's also new for the
dogs who

we're all learning together.

They have ferocious appetites
you know a

big pack in the wild will

have to eat almost twice a day

early in the morning and evening
just to

keep them going you know

they're high energy animals.

I've got the drone up at just
above the

enclosure just checking

if the dogs are digging

and I can see that they are
starting to

dig at their hole again.

So we're just about ahead in

there and drop off some rocks to
try and

block their diggings

here. We just need to address

those fairly quickly before they
get out.

There is one of the adult males
who's

continuously trying to dig out
of the

enclosure and our job is

just to walk around and just
rock pack

these holes where they're trying
to dig.

I think it's only natural
they're in a

new space in a foreign
environment.

They are a wide ranging species
so

they're used to having open
spaces.

I think in time they'll settle
once they

realise that they

have a steady food source

and they're actually protected
in the

Boma. I'm hoping that the

attempts to escape will lessen.

There's a lot of work to be done
here.

Our teams are going to be

coming through every morning and

every evening to have a quick
look, but it

doesn't necessarily remove them
from

their primary duties

of securing the reserve and
other

conservation work. We don't

want to spend too much time
here.

We don't want to get the animals
too

habituated with any presence

It's a great distraction from
the usual

So this area that we know as

York, it's great White Rhino

habitat. We've had a lot born
here

which is nice and the

population in York is growing.

It's growing healthy.

It's a little bit different to
the rest

of Balule.

Unfortunately, we don't have any
of the

Olifant's River coming through
our area

but a lot of flat land towards
the side

which is good from a grass cover
point of

view, hence White Rhino loving
it here.

And then we also have the area
where

Black Rhino's like to hang

around so it's a lovely area.

So we're out here this morning
with the

expensive machine that

goes ping to look for our

walkabout white rhino that we
released

close by on Saturday afternoon.

So we fitted a BHF collar on her
left

front foot. Rhino is quite a

odd shape animal so the best

place to put a collar on is on
their feet

and we really just want

to try and get an idea of

where she's at because we

still need to get that horn cut.

So we're going to have to rely
on Bruce

with a fixed wing to

pick a signal up in the air.

So for now, no luck
unfortunately.

For the last two, three years,
everybody

spirit is high. Things get done
that

was put to the side. You get

back to real conservation work.

There's also a false sense of
security

that's creeping up on

us. It doesn't matter how

long ago we had a rest or how
much

success we've had, we

shouldn't get blase.

We had a good run and rhino
poaching,

it's a concern. Training should
carry on,

the guys should always be ready.
It's

definitely, it's coming

again, it will come again to us.
