the amount of accidents

We got us quite a mess
going on here.

going across that,

[Charlie] I cannot afford
for this to go wrong.

Sunny and 54 in Denver,

and then I drove from Denver

to the Eisenhower Tunnel,

and by the time
I got to the Eisenhower Tunnel,

it was hammering snow.

[Charlie]
I-70 can totally trick you.

You can go from dry roads
10 miles away,

and all of a sudden,
a whiteout snowstorm,

and it gets dangerous quick.

[Narrator]
When ground-level winds

blast into the Rockies,

the mountains
force the air upward.

Rising air cools
and condenses into clouds

poised to drop heavy snow.

It's known as
an "upslope storm."

[rapidly blasting horn]

[Big Jon]
It's a disaster up here.

The storm kind of
caught people off guard.

A lot of people are chaining up.

We'll pick up the stragglers

that can't get going after that.

[Narrator]
The Mountain Recovery crew

is patrolling up and down I-70,

on the lookout
for drivers in trouble.

There's somebody
at the 192 eastbound, spun out.

[Charlie] It's snowing hard,

chain law's in,

things are spinning out,

crashes are bound to happen.

This is the chain station
at the bottom of Vail Pass,

eastbound.

All right, you all chained up,
you good?

They're chaining.

[Seth] We try to help 'em out
down here

before they end up
in too big of trouble.

You got chains?
You all set?

You all good?

All right, cool, man.
I'm gonna give you a card anyway

in case you end up needing us,
hopefully you don't.

[Big Jon] 09, don't worry
about chains right now.

Get up here, there's cars
all over up here.

[Charlie]
Before the night's over,

I would imagine we'd have
some sort of incident.

Just waiting for it to happen.

[Narrator] That wait

won't be a long one.

[tires squealing]

[Charlie] That's not good.

A lot of people don't know

how to deal with the wind.

That's the biggest issue
out here for the transports.

[Narrator] Tonight,

the powerful storm
hitting the mountains

is blowing intense gusts
across I-80

around Rawlins, Wyoming.

Hey, Chad,
Art with Stauffers Towing.

How are you doing today, man?

[Narrator] Veteran operator
Art Farmer

is ready for a busy night.

So I've been working
for Stauffers Towing

for about four years.

Oh, livin' the dream.

[Art] I like Wyoming,

but if you don't like the cold
and you don't like the wind,

don't move to Wyoming.

It's all a dream,

don't matter if it's a nightmare
or not, you know? [chuckling]

[Art] If you're empty,

that wind comes by,
knocks you in the side,

it can take you
right off the road...

[Art] ...and there's nothing
you can do about it.

The best thing you can do
is slow down.

[Narrator] Heavy winds
and blowing snow

can close long stretches
of I-80 through Wyoming.

[wind gusting]

[Art] Sometimes
the roads are shut down,

they can be shut down for days.

This area is notorious for
having plenty of weather for us.

[Narrator]
The newest member of Art's crew

is answering a call
75 kilometres east.

[Jim]
We're gonna go check on him.

We're gonna be Good Samaritans.

[Art] So, Jim,
he's been here three weeks.

So far, he's showing
a lot of promise.

[Jim] Right now,

the highway is shut down
due to, uh, high blowing winds.

When the winds are blowing snow
across the roadway like this,

visibility drops
to darn near zero.

[Narrator] When authorities
shut the highway,

one semi driver
tried to make it through...

and lost traction on the ice.

[Jim] I have no idea
why this guy's on the highway

with this kind of weather.

Whee!

I think there's
a little bit of wind!

[wind whistling]

The truck spun out on the ice,

so we're gonna try
to drag him up.

[wind gusting and buffeting]

[Jim] All right, you ready?

If you have any problems,
just blare your horn.

[Jim] Drivers are usually
pretty happy to see us

when we show up.

This guy
was no exception to that.

A little chilly out there.

These are conditions

you don't want to be
on the road during,

but it's, uh,
it's part of the job.

Let's go, buddy.

[Jim] There's some ice patches,

but it's not
completely iced over.

I can drag him

just with the motor power,

and not have to winch him.

[Narrator] Jim's pulled him
past the icy stretch,

so the driver should be able

to make it off the highway
on his own.

[Jim] That worked out nicely.

All right, buddy,

stick in the left lane,

'cause there's less ice.

We got him up the hill,

so now it's clean up,

get out of his way
so that he can get going.

It's pretty much downhill
from here to the next exit.

So, I'm going to
keep an eye on him,

see how far he gets.

Hopefully he can at least
make it down the hill

without running off the road.

I'm kind of hoping
those lights get smaller.

[Jim] And then
I see his lights stop,

so time to go up,
catch up to him,

see what's going on.

Are you kidding me?

[laughing]

Yeah, I think
he just got stuck again.

This guy is just having
a bad day.

He can't make the turn.

I think he started sliding
making the turn.

Yeah, he got stuck again.

He's stuck
in the middle of the road.

[wind gusting]

[Narrator] On I-80
east of Rawlins,

Jim is heading to help
the same stuck driver...

This guy is just having
a bad day.

[Narrator]
...for the second time

in just minutes.

The driver
came off the highway,

got to the top of the on-ramp,

and made a left turn
to go across the bridge.

[Narrator] The trailer is now
up against the crosswind,

gusting at almost
80 kilometres per hour.

This is going to be
interesting.

[shouting] No!

It's cold enough out here,

and the wind is strong enough

with the ice blowing around...

The gloves,
blowing off into the wind!

...that you can actually
start to succumb to frostbite

relatively quickly.

I would avoid
going across that,

because the wind's going to be
blowing right at you.

It could blow you over.

Try to go straight back.

Slow little movements, yeah.

One-wheel drive.

He's slipping on the ice.

He just found a nice
little ice patch right there,

so I'm going to try to pull him
back off that ice patch

so that he can get straight.

[Jim] We're going to hook onto
his passenger side

and hopefully drag him
sideways...

off the ice,
out of the roadway,

and to a safe spot.

Are your truck brakes set?

Yellow handle, pull it out.

I want the front to roll.

I'm going to try to get you
off that ice.

Hey, try to go forward.

Yeah, there you go.

And we got the roadway clear!

The road's closed,
so just sit tight, okay?

Whoo!

[Jim] Successfully gotten
the driver back off of the road,

and he's in a safe spot.

I get to call home base

and figure out which direction
they want me to travel

for the next one.

I'm glad I got my glove back.

It was fricking cold.

[wind whistling]

[Big Jon] Let's roll.

We're headed to I-70
at the 1-4-3, westbound.

There's a semi,

double trailers rolled over
on the shoulder.

[Narrator] The crew
is driving 112 kilometres west

to the scene of last night's
double-trailer rollover.

[Charlie] Colorado State Patrol

felt that it should wait
until the daytime

to be recovered.

[Narrator]
The driver escaped unhurt,

and authorities didn't want
to risk a recovery

until the weather cleared.

Now the pressure is on.

[Charlie] CDOT wants
everything done by 2:00 p.m.,

you know, and obviously

it's because
school starts letting out,

and then work
starts letting out, right?

It's going to be a challenge.

[Bad Grandpa] We got about
three, four inches of snow

last night,

so we had a busy night.

A lot of us were out
all night long.

[Charlie] Bad Grandpa,

he conquers
whatever he puts his mind to.

[Bad Grandpa]
They call me "Bad Grandpa"

because everybody thinks
I got one wife

and three girlfriends.

Well, that's really
kind of a rumor.

You never know
what we're in for

until you get on scene,

and take a look at it.

We call it Dead Man's Curve.

That's because of
the amount of accidents

that happen right here,

and it's kind of out
in a desolate area.

06 is on the scene.

We got us quite a mess
going on here.

[Big Jon]
Sweet, we got a good one.

I wonder if it was icy
out here?

They said the driver was okay.

Try not to get run over here.

It basically
looked like a yard sale

on the side of the road.

I thought to myself,

"We're going to be here
a while."

[Big Jon] It's rolled over.

The two trailers are broken
apart from each other,

which is a pretty
difficult thing to do.

I've only seen that
one other time.

[Bad Grandpa]
Yeah, and it looks like

the safety chains
have totally snapped

and broken off
from the other trailer.

You can see the hitch
totally released on it,

and, uh, sent the other trailer
flying out of here.

I'm going to pull
my truck down here.

We can start working
on this one,

and then once we get
this lane closed,

we'll reposition
a little better.

This 2:00 p.m. deadline,

Charlie might be a little
optimistic with it.

We're going to do our best
to get it done.

[Charlie] Hey, can you advise
HLT and CSP

that we're going to have
the number two lane closed

at the 1-4-5 westbound

for approximately
a two-hour closure?

[radio dispatch]

Nice day.

[Charlie]
Are they pretty full, or no?

[Bad Grandpa]
The front trailer, 13,000,

and the rear, 7.

[Narrator] It's a mixed load
of freight,

everything from pet food...

[Charlie] You got a cat?

[Bad Grandpa] Hell, no.

[Narrator] ...to solar panels.

First trailer
that's hooked up to the tractor,

this weird mixed load,

and it's heavy.

[Charlie] I don't know,
we're just going to blow

this side of the trailer
out, though,

if we just roll it,
you know what I mean?

[Bad Grandpa]
Oh, yeah, for sure.

[Charlie] We'll get in here
with the track machine

and salvage what we can

without trying
to blow the side out.

We've got to unload
quite a bit more

than what we thought.

[Bad Grandpa] Yeah, this thing
is a total loss.

This is a disaster.

[Charlie] Yeah,
traffic is still moving.

This semi here
is moving a little fast.

Slow him down.

[Narrator] On I-70,

the 2:00 p.m. deadline
is coming fast.

[Charlie] You know, we've got
a live lane closed here,

and the idea is to get
this thing out of the way

as quick as possible.

Hey, it's 03.

Let's talk about
what we want to do.

So that one we are going
to unload completely, right?

Because we're going to break
the side out if we don't.

Yeah, I think
that whole wall is compromised,

pretty much ripped through.
-[Charlie] Yeah.

[Narrator]
For maximum efficiency,

Big Jon will work
to upright the rear trailer

while Charlie and crew
offload the front one.

Then Big Jon will reposition

to lift the damaged
front trailer and tractor.

All right, here we go.

We're going to try to see
if she'll come over.

Well, the gamble is just,
you don't know what's in there,

you don't know
what's compromised, what's not.

[Charlie] The load is not
in any way uniform.

Lots of manpower
is what that takes

to offload that properly.

[Bad Grandpa]
We got the crew showing up,

they're showing up one by one.

Yeah, dog.

We're going move
all this stuff out of here,

and then Jon wants to roll this.

[Charlie] Now you're set?

[Gilbert]
So trying to work as a team

to get your job done fast enough

to not upset
the state patrol or CDOT.

[Charlie] We're loaded really
heavy on one end, or what?

[Narrator]
The mismatched cargo...

[Charlie] There we go.

[Narrator] ...is already
causing problems

for the offload team.

[Charlie] Load me up!

[Charlie] It's sketchy,
it's annoying,

the load just wants
to shift everywhere.

Everything's on its side,

and nothing wants to line up

and come out in one big piece.

[Bad Grandpa]
It's going to break...

Oh, no!

[Charlie]
We've got things breaking...

cargo going
all over the place...

[crunching]

[Gilbert] There you go.

Yeah, that's it!

Just makes more hand work
for all the guys.

[Bad Grandpa] What the hell
is that other stuff?

[Charlie] This is way
more messy than what we thought.

Time's tickin'!

[Narrator]
20 metres down the road,

Big Jon and his crew...

[Big Jon]
Just drop it for a second.

[Narrator] ...are racing
to rig up the rear trailer.

[Big Jon] Perfect,
it's doing what we want.

I'll get enough lift

to just slide this strap
underneath it

for when we're going to
roll it over in a little bit.

There was no-
no space under there,

so we made some space.

The worst-case scenario
you got here

is if something's compromised
that we can't see,

it's gonna self-unload itself.

[Seth] Yeah, you got a binder?

[Big Jon] Um... this chain
is going to go...

get wrapped
into the landing gear,

like right here.

This is going to be
our catch line.

All right, let's see
if I'm good at basketball today.

This strap is going to
have to get hooked

to this chain.

You're-you're a monkey,
get up there.

[Seth] Yeah.

[Seth]
You're pulling winch lines.

You want a ladder?

My natural habitat.

[Seth] Basically
just getting chains

and metal and iron
into this thing

so you can grab it
where you need to

and make it do what you want.

I'm going to go help
these guys

control this load over,

and then I'll come back.

[Narrator] With moving traffic
just metres away,

Charlie wants to ensure

the trailer makes a soft,
controlled landing.

The quickest way
to get that done

was actually to take
the track machine

and hook up a catch strap
to that

just to make that
happen quickly.

I would go off of the main beam

across the top of the--

-Right here?
-Yup.

[Narrator] As Big Jon pulls
to roll the trailer,

Charlie will add some resistance
on the other side,

softening the touchdown.

[Charlie] There's some risks
that come with that.

We're a lot lighter
than that trailer might be,

and it could take us with it
if it wants to.

Hey, you know
what you're doing?

Yeah. [laughing]

[Charlie] It's really important

that Big Jon and I
work together in tandem

to roll this trailer over.

He gets a little bit
ahead of me,

and I don't
have control over it yet,

it could roll up,

and then it could roll back over
into his truck.

[Seth] We could definitely
break this thing,

but try not to.

Try not to make
more work for ourselves.

The plan only works

if Charlie's line stays tight.

[Narrator] On I-70 in Colorado,

Big Jon needs Charlie
to tighten his grip

on the suspended trailer.

Loosen up a little bit.

[Big Jon]
We don't know the weights.

We don't know
what's actually in here,

so a lot of unknowns.

[Big Jon]
Just about to be all yours.

Yeah, I feel it.

[Charlie] It's really important
to control these loads

and to know
how they're going to land.

There's a lot of momentum
that we're creating, right?

Yeah, and we could

get out of control
with that load pretty quickly

if we're pulling on it
too hard, too quick.

Yeah, buddy!

[Big Jon] Nice work.

That was good.

[Bad Grandpa] Things
are going well right now.

We didn't compromise anything
out of the other trailer.

It stayed intact,

so that saves us about
four hours of manual labor

right there.

This one
wasn't too complicated.

We'll go play with this
next one,

it's got a lot more challenges.

This second trailer
and the tractor

is pretty much destroyed.

The whole top of the trailer
is ripped open.

[Charlie] Ah, this sucks!

[Narrator]
...and the messy offload

is pushing them
right up against the deadline.

Oh, man!

[Charlie] Leading up to it,

and even showing up to the wreck

as a planned recovery,

knowing that 2:00 p.m.'s
our deadline,

and now seeing
what we have to deal with,

I don't think we're going to
be able to achieve that goal.

[Bad Grandpa]
The odds are zero.

Negative zero
that's going to happen.

[Charlie] They're so slippery.

They just slip
all over each other.

It's so annoying.

[Big Jon] We're running
low on time right now.

We're just trying
to get this done.

It's taking a little longer
than we expected.

Is it just me,
or did traffic pick up?

[Bad Grandpa] I'm trying
to keep everybody happy,

keep everything moving here.

That traffic count
is picking up.

Definitely feeling the crunch.

[Big Jon]
It's taking too long.

Let's just
roll this thing over.

[Narrator] Big Jon and Charlie
decide to change the plan.

[Big Jon]
We're running out of time,

so we got to just try
to junk-roll it

and get that thing rolled over,

and hold in as much product
as we can.

[Narrator] Rolling it with
half the freight still inside

will save time.

The question is, at what cost?

[Charlie] It's always a gamble

when you're trying
to lift things

with cargo left in it.

You never know how that
trailer's going to react,

and if a wall's
going to blow out.

[Big Jon] Seth, do you want
to start rigging this with me?

[Seth] Uh, sure, yeah.

[Big Jon] Get it done.

We're going to put another
snatch block right there,

and then go to that chain
by the front tire on the top.

Now just tip-hook this
into that loop.

[Narrator] In Wyoming,

the worst of the storm
has blown through...

Little bit of wind going on,
plenty of ice on the road,

plenty of snow blowing around,

and temperature
is 14 Fahrenheit.

[Narrator]
Jim is back on the road,

cleaning up in the aftermath.

When you get
truck drivers out here,

and you've got the ice
and everything like that,

they start playing
truckers on ice.

[Narrator]
While Jim heads to a call,

he's not the only
Stauffers operator

hitting the highway.

We're on the 2-87,

which heads north
out of Rawlins.

I'm Brendan Madia,

a light-duty,
medium-duty driver,

training to be
one of the heavy boys.

When I get a call on 2-87,

usually
my heart definitely drops.

It's a two-lane highway,

speed limit
is 70 miles per hour.

There's no dividers,
there's no nothing.

The wind blows really hard
out there,

so getting a call out there

is definitely, you know,

a "kiss Lillian bye,

tell her
I'll be back home later,

and hopefully I make it."
[laughing]

[Narrator]
Brendan's heading to a job

just down the road from Jim.

[Brendan] It's simple,
a pickup truck broken down.

Shouldn't be too hard...

Are you kidding me?

...but there's no keys for it.

Um, we can get a car
on and off a bed

with no keys, no problem.

But it is on the shoulder...

which is sloped,
and it is stuck in "park."

I can't get it out of "park,"

so it's going to slide
a little bit.

It's not going to come
straight up the bed.

[Narrator]
10 kilometres south...

[Narrator] ...Jim has
pulled up on his own scene.

[Jim] Give me a second,

I'm going to run my lines out

and drag you back on the road.

[Jim] So, he's empty.

We're going to hook up to him,

and we're just going to drag him
right back up on the roadway.

All right, buddy!

Uh, release your brakes,

and I'm going to see
who's got more pull.

Hold the steering wheel
towards me.

[Narrator]
It looks simple enough...

[Jim] Turn the steering wheel
a little bit that way.

[Narrator]
...but Jim didn't count on

the steep bank of the ditch.

Yeah, turn
the steering wheel straight.

[Jim]
When the wheels would turn,

or they would catch resistance,

they would start to slide
sideways on the ice.

Come on, buddy...

[Jim] For every two feet
we'd pull him up,

he'd slide about a foot
back down into the ditch.

[Jim groaning in frustration]

All right, go ahead
and set your brake.

I gotta call
for a second truck.

[Narrator] Jim calls
for the only help available.

Hi, I'm turning around.

I'm gonna grab him, um--

he was sliding in too much,

so I needed to turn around,

and I may need you
to hook your side-puller

to keep his tail
from sliding away from me.

[Brendan] Great, okay.

[Narrator] Luckily
even without keys,

Brendan's wrangled the pickup.

[Brendan] We're alone out here.

If Jim needs help, I'm gonna
go out there and help him.

[Narrator] He'll quickly
drop the pickup at the shop,

and head back out
to lend a hand.

I've been doing this
for four years now,

and I've tried quitting twice...

and I always end up
back in the truck,

so obviously
I kind of enjoy what I do.

Beautiful.

All right,
let's get the hell out of here.

[Narrator] On I-70 in Colorado,

the crew is ready to rig up
the partly loaded trailer...

[Narrator] ...but the level
of destruction

has exceeded their time limit...

[Charlie] CDOT gave us
a deadline of 2:00 p.m.

to get this wreck
out of here,

but we're beyond that already.

It's 3:00 p.m.,

and we're only
about halfway through.

[Bad Grandpa] Yeah, we try
to do the best we can.

You know, it's gonna be
a little longer than expected

with this recovery here.

[Narrator]
...and as time gets later,

the road gets busier.

[Bad Grandpa] This is

one of the heaviest
traffic times of the day.

We're getting ready
to flip this one on its wheels.

[Big Jon] I have to turn around
real quick.

I'm not going to have
a good angle.

No, we're not turning around.

They'll kill me.
They're already watching this.

[Narrator] With traffic
already bottle-necking,

Charlie can't afford
to close down the second lane

for Jon to reposition.

[Bad Grandpa]
We got school traffic,

we got people
going home from work,

we gotta get this going.

There's no way

we're going to get
a traffic hold here, though.

It's just... it's going to be
impossible on that corner.

[Big Jon]
You can work off the front,

but there's no jack legs
up front.

There's nothing stabilizing you.

[Charlie] Just hang on,

let me just wait for a break.

[Narrator] So they need
to take advantage

of any break in the traffic.

[Seth]
We just need a second.

[Big Jon]
Let's do it right now.

Traffic's moving slow enough

that we can have Big Jon

turn that truck
all the way around

without that full closure.

[Charlie] Go, go, go!

Slowly!

Yoo!

We got it.

-[Big Jon] Nice work.
-[Charlie laughing]

[Narrator] The first step,

shift the trailer

to make room
to slide straps underneath.

All right, let's do it!

[Big Jon] Yeah!

I think we'll be able
to get these straps

pulled underneath.

[Narrator] In Wyoming...

[Jim] Oh, there you go.

[Narrator] ...help has arrived
for Jim's sliding semi.

[Jim] Brendan's showing up,
so that's good.

It's always good to have
an extra set of hands

on any recovery.

[Jim] What I might do

is have you hook
to the front of him.

I'm afraid of him
sliding back over.

We'll use his truck
to hold the tractors

while I grab the trailer

and drag it sideways
up out of the ditch.

Take that single
and just put it right here...

Yeah.

...and then just hold him,

and then park, like, right here,

and just hold the ass end
from going over,

I think we'll be fine.

[Narrator] For Brendan,

eager to earn a spot
on the heavy crew,

any chance to assist

is a chance to prove himself.

and pulling out
from the trailer?

Yeah, I'm going to
grab the trailer now.

[Jim] We'll use
a continuous loop strap

to a wheel strap
between the duals

to essentially lift the tires

and facilitate it
to be dragged sideways.

[Jim] Low!

You're just keeping him
from sliding in.

[Jim] Brendan's younger

and kind of starting out
in his career,

but he's taking advantage

of being able to learn a lot
from myself,

and I'm sure he's got plenty
to teach me as well.

[Brendan] Come on.

Oh, yeah, it works perfect!

we pretty much got him out.

There's still
a little bit of ice,

so we're going to get
out of his way

and have him pull forward,

and see if we can't
get him out

without us dragging more cable,

'cause it's still a little icy,

but we'll see what happens.

You know, we can talk
all we want in the shop,

but every situation
is different.

Any sort of job like this,

teamwork is paramount,

and we worked together very well

to make sure
that everything got done

the way it needed to get done.

a different calling

sometimes it's hard
on your mental state...

but I can't imagine
doing anything else.

I'll bring it right to you
on the trailer,

but walk it and drop it
over the other side.

[Narrator] Traffic
is backing up along I-70

for kilometres.

[Narrator] With their straps
now under the mangled trailer,

the Mountain Recovery crew
is getting ready to gamble.

Starting a betting pool.

It will either pop in half,
or it won't.

[chuckling]

I got 20 on "We got it."

[Charlie] You never know
if a wall is going to blow out,

so we're going to
roll the dice here

and see what happens.

[Big Jon]
The more I look at it,

the more I second-guess

that it's going
to come over right.

I need a catch strap
over the top of this.

[Big Jon]
Pretty big hillside here.

There's a lot of chances

if you didn't have a catch line
of some sort on this
