- Well, this is
the first real day

of our 4th of July weekend.

- [Mark] How's it been?

We're here on the Strip,

officially known as
the Bagnell Dam Strip.

It's an historic part of town.

You have retail stores,

restaurants, drinking
establishments.

You have a few attractions
for the kiddos,

ice cream shops and
things like that.

But because you have so
many people down here

over the 4th of July,

we're gonna have
adequate police coverage

to make sure they
can do that safely.

On Friday and Saturday
nights, the Strip

is packed with tourists
from all over the Midwest,

all over the country.

- We're all from Wisconsin.

- Outer Banks!

- Typically, our city is
less than 2,000 people

of folks that live
here full time.

By the time 4th of
July gets here...

- We have a huge influx
in traffic volume.

That's gonna generate
more traffic stops

and particularly
our DWI arrests.

Our job shifts a little
bit from mundane,

day-to-day office work,

and we hit the streets
with the guys and gals.

[cheering]

- [Mark] On your call, Chief.

- [James] It's my
first summer as chief,

first 4th of July as chief.

I'm excited for the
opportunity to kinda,

you know, try things
with maybe a little bit

of a different twist this year.

Even though I'm chief, these
officers working down here,

so I think it's important to
be down here next to them.

- Oh, ho.

That is such a cute pup.

[dance music]
[people chattering]

- We've located a
person downstairs

causing a peace disturbance,

but they're not sure how he
got downstairs in the basement.

He's not supposed
to be down there.

- [Officer] I'm not the one.

[dramatic music]

- We got called to the scene.

There was a male subject
that went into the kitchen

and down into the basement.

- He was resisting staff to
get out of the kitchen area,

tried to be a little
squirmy and combative.

- (bleep).

- They found him
in the basement.

They had no idea
how he got there.

- They don't wanna
press charges.

They don't wanna do
anything with him,

but he blew a 0.206.

So he's heavily intoxicated.

- He may just be so drunk
he wandered down there

and didn't realize where he was.

[upbeat dance music]

- For me, it's very important

that we're
approachable to folks.

We're not always gonna see
eye to eye with everybody.

We're gonna have to take
a few people to jail.

We're gonna have to
issue some citations.

But we can do that
in a respectful way.

And we do deal
with a lot of folks

that are down here drinking.

And that takes a
level of patience

that sometimes can
be hard to find.

We are at full staff right
now, just 11 officers,

and that includes me.

- How's it going?
- Good.

- If things get outta hand,

we are very used to just
having to jump into action

to deal with whatever
might happen.

We're ready for summer

and we're ready to get
this thing rolling.

It's go time.

- So, hey. I'm not actually
gonna put my handcuffs on you,

but I'll make it look like I am.

- Hey, here's the deal.
You are going to jail.

You gotta look sad.
You can't smile.

Nobody is happy they're going
to jail. You know what I mean?

You gotta make your
mom believe it, right?

It's a real quick
way to build rapport.

Like, say something
happens later on tonight

and I gotta get
information from that guy.

He knows that I'm nice.

Maybe he'll be more willing
to give information.

I help change his
mind on police,

so that way he's nicer to
the next police officer

that he encounters, you know?

And it humanizes the badge.

It makes us look like we're
not robots, 'cause we're not.

We're normal people.

[upbeat music]

- [James] With a town that
sees this many visitors

every year, and
with a small crew,

we have to do things in a way

that other agencies
don't do them.

- Thank you for

We have a lot of
support in our community

for the way we police.

that come down here

And so those are the ones that

we kind of want
to keep guessing.

here on Highway KK

for a motor vehicle accident,
two vehicles involved.

So, I'm gonna help Officer
Kaegy with traffic control.

July 4th is usually Osage
Beach's busiest weekend.

There's probably 75,000
to a 100,000 people here.

I would consider Osage Beach
to be the front line of defense

of the massive influx of tourism

that brings the
obvious crime here

at the Lake of the Ozarks.

On a holiday weekend like this,

we're already dealing with
drunk individuals in the day.

I think it's safe to assume
it's only gonna get worse

as the night goes on.

[police radio chatter]

[tense music]

- Coffee all day?

- Okay.

- So Officer Kaegy has suspicion

that the driver's
possibly intoxicated.

He asked her to submit to
some field sobriety tests

to which she agreed.

Officer Hudler is with the
other half of the accident.

Nobody's hurt.

- [Driver] Okay.

- Okay.

- Okay.

- We can have a-- Would
you like to blow in a PBT?

- Okay, okay.

- Uh-huh.

- [Kale] No, you're
okay. Don't fall out.

- [Kale] Okay.

- [Kale] Yeah, we will.

that stuff at?

- [Bobby] The driver gave
Kaegy a specific location

where, I guess, some
drugs were located.

I found a little bag
containing some kind of pill.

Probably send it to the lab

to get some confirmation
on what it actually is.

- 4th of July starts

the heaviest part of
the summer season,

and you will find residents
shooting off fireworks

and enjoying their liberties

that you have here in
Lake Ozark, Missouri.

Where I live, my home
on the main channel,

I can see fireworks for
miles all over the lake.

It's quite a sight.

So, the city of
Lake Ozark is unique

in that it's really the
front door of the entire

Lake of the Ozarks region.

If you're into the outdoors,

there's no better place
in the United States.

Whether you're fishing,
boating activities.

We've got golf courses.

We've got 50,000
acres of state park.

But Lake Ozark has
changed tremendously

over the last 30 to 40 years.

Known as a small mom and
pop business destination,

mainly Missourians would
come vacation here,

come down on the weekends,

and now you've got
all kinds of people.

It's been said that we have
several million people visit

on an annual basis, and
there's no doubt about it.

And one of the challenges

the city of Lake Ozark
specifically faces,

is a modest police department.

But our guys are trained.

We've got a great chief teaching
'em how they can deal with

that type of activity.

They do a great job of
protecting our citizens

and our community, and
it's a very special spot.

[gentle music]

- The Lake of the Ozarks is
pretty chill, calm, collected,

and then the 4th of July hits
and it's a whole new animal.

It's like the whole week
for the Lake of the Ozarks.

It's pretty packed
and it is hectic.

There's lots and
lots of drinking.

Most of them just
wanna have fun,

but you get to drinking

and sometimes the alcohol
kind of gets to you.

We do a pretty good job
keeping the community safe.

I got into law enforcement
because I love helping people.

I'm the only female
in the department,

but that doesn't stop
the boys from acting like

I'm one of them,
and I enjoy that.

So, we're all pretty close

and we love to help
each other when we can.

We also love to give each other

a little bit of crap
when we can too.

Keeps us on our toes.

- We're gonna go check that out.

A lot of our job is knowing
how to talk to people,

and a lot of it's just kind
of, like, common sense too.

But if you're willing to learn

and put your life on
the line for others,

no matter what it comes down
to, you'll do just fine.

I have a little boy
who looks up to me

and thinks police officers
are just the coolest thing.

But he keeps telling me he wants
to be a firefighter though.

It's like, "Okay, we'll see".

Trying to convert him,
but as long as he's happy.

[blinker ticking]

Okay, so right now, we are
in front of Marty Byrde's

for an illegally parked
white Chevy Tahoe.

We get a lot of people that
actually think it's okay

to park in the handicap spot.

That's one of my
biggest pet peeves.

Gonna try and find
the owners for that.

[radio chatter]

It's gonna be a temp tag.

Looks like it's on
a 2024 Chevy Tahoe.

10-4. Will you go ahead and
get me a tow truck started?

- Gotta park responsibly
if you're gonna park.

- [Angel] 10-4.

- So, it's illegally parked.

If you're not handicapped,

you don't park in
the handicap spot.

has possession of vehicle.

- [Dispatch] Vehicle
entered and will be towed.

- Is that your car?

- All right. Well,
they're towing it now.

They already have
it on the trailer,

so you'll have to
follow and talk to him.

Are you handicapped?

- [Angel] Okay. Do you
have your ID on you?

- That fast? We got
a complaint on it.

- So, you can't park there
unless you're handicapped.

It's not fair to
the handicapped.

- [Dispatch] 9-27.
- So, we had the owner

of the vehicle show up.

He was advised that his vehicle
is still gonna be towed,

so he will still be
receiving a summons.

- [Stephen] In the five years
that I've been with Osage Beach,

we get a pretty good
variety of calls,

especially in the summertime.

I've worked petty stealings,
to burglaries, petty assaults,

domestic assaults, homicides.

Because it's a tourist
town, we get all kinds

and sometimes people,
when they visit here,

bring their problems with them.

So you're getting a lot
thrown at you at once

and you either
adapt or you drown.

[radio beeps]

Normally when we come
up on a call like this,

we're gonna look for
things in the yard

that might lead us to
believe forced entry.

Once we actually get
into the residence,

we're gonna treat it as
though someone is in there

and we try to
clear it tactically

and efficiently in
groups of two or three.

These can be quite dangerous.

[slow dramatic music]

- Pretty good. I'd
ask how you're doing,

but it sounds kind of stressful.

So, there's no one in there,

but it's clear someone
went through it.

since we do know it's safe.

I've got my guys
in there looking

for signs of forced entry.

if anything is missing.

- Did they take the entirety
of it, like the entire safe?

- How much was the safe?

- 80 grand?
- Yeah.

Like, it's my slush
fund for my business

when I need, like,
large purchases.

We do diesel repairs, so
we're always spending.

- Because of the amount,

especially in the
safe and the jewelry,

we're probably gonna call our
on-call detective out here.

He's gonna have some

can probably lift prints,

things of that nature, and
then go from there. Okay?

looks like it's been cut,
it's floating in the water.

- Should be. In theory.

We're gonna need the
specifics on it though.

- [Stephen] Yes, sir.

- We make entry through both
the front and back door.

Both are unlocked. The entire
house has been gone through.

- Boat's been found.

State's got a towboat en route.

So right now,
Detective Owen's gonna

continue the investigation.

Any trace evidence he can
get that hopefully leads us

to the perpetrators
would be beneficial.

We can get back out on patrol.

Around here, we get a lot
of burglaries and thefts.

They'll then resell what
they steal and purchase drugs

or other illicit
substances with it.

And then it's a vicious cycle.

Here in the Lake of the Ozarks
during the 4th of July weekend,

it brings in a lot of tourism.

This is the hub. It's the
kickoff to the busy season.

We gotta stay vigilant.

We gotta change our
tactics on how we do stuff.

How many people
we have on patrol.

We go from a small
town atmosphere

to the littlest big city around.

I was born in Poland.

Lived there for the first
seven years of my life,

and we moved to
Southern California.

Then my sister moved out here

and she's like, "Man, you'll
love it. Come on down."

And so I went through the
police academy at 30 years old,

I was a late bloomer
into law enforcement.

I just got asked by

to respond to his location.

We had a successful weekend.

You know, we always look
forward to 4th of July,

but at the same time we look
forward to it being over.

We can take a little
bit of a deep breath

knowing that we made it through
without any real problems.

But now we look to the
rest of the summer.

We'll definitely be
ready for what's to come

and hope to make it
through unscathed.
