Where's Kirito-kun?
What'd I tell you?
That boy was the biggest hole in our security.
Looks like you couldn't have been more right.
Is Kirito-kun safe?
Were you lying when you said you could heal him?
Tell me, Kikuoka-san!
When that fugitive from the Death Gun incident attacked,
Kirito-kun's brain sustained damage that modern medicine is unable to heal.
However,
there exists one piece of technology, here at Rath, that may be able to save him.
I'm sure you've heard of it.
The STL... the Soul Translator.
If we use the STL to directly stimulate his Fluctlight,
we can help him generate a new neural network.
But it takes time.
Kirito-kun is inside one of the few full-spec STLs in existence, all of which are in this facility.
We're treating him better than any hospital could.
He even has his own personal nurse.
I understand. I'll trust you for now.
Now that all that's out in the open, why don't you just tell us everything, Kikuoka-san?
Why is an SDF member like you posing as a harmless department head in the Ministry of the Interior?
What are you plotting here?
And why did you need Kirigaya-kun?
Will you help us if I tell you?
I'll decide based on your answer.
Well then, may I assume you're both familiar with the concept of the STL?
It's a machine that reads a human's soul—their Fluctlight—
making it possible to dive into a virtual world indistinguishable from reality.
Correct.
But I take it you don't know this project's objective. Right?
Objective?
To create a bottom-up, general artificial intelligence.

A bottom-up general artificial intelligence?
There are two approaches to developing artificial intelligence.
One is top-down.
This involves cramming a program with experience and information.
Through a learning process, it attains something akin to true intelligence.
Until recently, the AI that Dr. Shigemura had been researching— and essentially all of the AI that you see currently—
used the top-down approach.
But a top-down type can't react appropriately to anything it hasn't learned about.
In effect, this means they have not yet reached the level of true intelligence.
Which brings us to bottom-up artificial intelligence.
This is the human brain.
The idea is to artificially recreate that organ, which connects one hundred billion brain cells.
That's how we hope to give rise to intellect.
Is that even possible?
Until now, this was the stuff of science fiction.
But the Soul Translator can scan a human soul,
the quantum field we call the Fluctlight.
And we've also developed a way of storing the same amount of data as a human brain.
It's a storage medium called the Light Quantum Gate Crystal, or "Lightcube" for short.
Which means it can be used to copy a Fluctlight?
Precisely.
In fact, we have already succeeded in replicating a human soul.
Then why did you even need to call me here?
Because, foolishly enough, we'd missed something.
The fact that a chasm, unbelievably vast and deep,
exists between a copy of the human soul and a true artificial intelligence.
Higa-kun.
Show them, would you? I think it's time for a demonstration.
Really? We're doing this again?
Is the sampling done?
Yeah. Everything completed with no problems.
Glad to hear it. But it's pitch-black, and I can't move a muscle.
Is this a glitch with the STL? Could you get me out of the machine?
I'm afraid that won't be possible.
Hey, what the hell? What are you talking about?
Who are you? Your voice doesn't sound familiar.
I'm Higa. Higa Takeru.
No way! What do you mean? I'm Higa! Let me out of the STL and I'll show you!
Calm down. Don't get worked up.
That's not like you.
You may be a copy, but you're Higa Takeru.
You calmly accept situations—
I'm the real one here!
If I'm a copy, then I should feel like one! This... This isn't...
No! Let me out of here! Let me out of this thing!
You need to calm down.
You're aware of the danger to your Fluctlight if you lose the capacity for rational thought.
I am being rational!
Is that impostor down there able to recite the digits of pi?
3.14159265358...
And he's collapsed. One minute, eight seconds.
You're both completely sick!
Sorry you had to see that.
But I hope you see that we could only make you understand by letting you watch firsthand.
Including myself, we've copied the Fluctlights of over ten people,
and not a single one could bear the thought of being a copy.
If simple copies are out of the question, what should we do?
Well...
I guess you could raise them from scratch.
Don't tell me...
That's right.
Copy the souls of newborn infants and raise them.
But how would you create the environment to raise them in?
You couldn't possibly make something on the level of modern society.
Very true. But we realized something.
Plenty of perfectly suitable environments already exist on the internet.
VRMMO worlds.
Bingo!
Using the Seed, we created small villages and surrounding landscapes
and converted them for STL use.
In the first town we created,
four members of the Rath staff raised sixteen soul archetypes—that is, AI infants—to the age of 18.
These sixteen youths, who we called artificial Fluctlights for convenience, grew up quickly,
and how they turned out was more than satisfactory.
They were all highly obedient and virtuous.
When they were joined in marriage, we gave them babies— in other words, new soul archetypes—for them to raise.
And as time advanced at five thousand times the speed of the real world, generations passed,
and by the time 3 weeks, or 300 years in their world, had elapsed,
a massive society with a population of 80,000 had emerged.
But at that level, that's a civilization simulation.
You're right about that.
At this time, 480 years have already passed in that world,
and the population of the capital, Centoria, has reached 20,000.
The artificial Fluctlights matured into the bottom-up AIs that we'd hoped for.
So we were thrilled to be able to move on to the next phase.
However...
That's when we noticed a serious problem.
A problem?
A governing body called the Axiom Church has created laws that they call the Taboo Index.
Taboo Index?
For instance, it contains a law forbidding murder, just like we have in the real world.
But you just have to catch the nightly news to see how often humans violate such laws.
Fluctlights, on the other hand, obey their laws.
Obey them excessively, you could say.
This town is beautiful, and far too perfect.
There isn't a piece of garbage on the streets. Nor a single thief to be found.
Needless to say, there has never been a single case of murder.
And how is that a "problem"?
Could it be that your objective
is to create AIs capable of murder?
Both Kirito-kun and I figured that the reason for your interest in VRMMOs
was because the technology could be applied to police work and SDF training. But...
This project is far too ambitious for just that.
For an SDF official like yourself to attempt something of this scale...
What you want is to build AIs capable of killing enemy soldiers in battle.
Am I wrong?
Is that true, Kikuoka-san?
Five years ago,
when the NerveGear was announced,
it struck me.
This technology had the potential to upend the basic precepts of war.
Ministry of Internal
When the SAO incident occurred,
I volunteered to transfer to the Ministry, and joined the task force.
I did all that so I could get this project off the ground.
Five long years later, and here I am.
Why did you decide to take part in this project, Higa-kun?
Well, actually, my motivations were a bit more personal.
I was friends with this one guy when I was a college student in Korea.
And he died during his military service.
And so I thought... even if this world is never rid of war,
at least if people never had to die anymore, then...
I know it's a pretty childish reason.
But you haven't spoken a word of this to Kirito-kun.
What makes you think that?
If you had talked to him about it, he never would've agreed to help you.
There's one crucial piece missing from your story.
And that is?
The rights of these AIs.
These "artificial Fluctlights" have the same minds as real humans, right?
It's not as if they have flesh and blood.
But they're no different than living beings.
Forcing them to kill or be killed as tools of war...
Kirito-kun would never play a part in that!
Never.
It's not like I don't understand what you're saying.
But to me, the lives of 100,000 AIs still wouldn't be worth the life of a single SDF soldier.
Why, though?
Why did you need Kirigaya-kun?
Why would you use him at the risk of leaking something so highly confidential?
Oh, right. I'd almost forgotten why I started telling you about all this.
Why are the artificial Fluctlights unable to disobey the Taboo Index?
To answer that question, we came up with an experiment.
If we were to block all of a real human's memories,
revert him to childhood and have him grow up in the virtual world,
would the subject be able to disobey the Taboo Index?
To carry out this experiment, we needed a subject who was used to moving in a virtual world.
Someone who had not just weeks or months, but entire years of experience.
You can fill in the blanks, can't you?
I can't believe Onii-chan got mixed up with something like that.
Sunday, July 5, 2026 Sylvain
Sunday, July 5, 2026 Sylvain
Can we even trust what Kikuoka-san is saying?
After all that, you'd hope he has no secrets left to hide.
So we're just going to have to trust that the STL treatment will work, huh?
Hey, so what happened with Kirito and that, uh...
Taboo Index thingy, in the end?
There was a boy and a girl who Kirito-kun was always playing with,
and it seems like the girl ended up disobeying the Taboo Index.
You mean she was influenced by Kirito?
Yes.
The law she broke was "accessing a restricted address."
We saw that another Fluctlight died in the restricted address, in full view of the girl.
Most likely, she tried to help him.
In other words, this girl prioritized someone else's life over the Taboo Index.
That's precisely what we've been seeking.
That's a lovely story, but...
If only it wasn't a study on weapons to kill people.
I agree. But I'm amazed by what that girl did.
After all, it's not easy to overcome yourself.
Does that girl have a name?
Yes.
Alice?
Right. That was the name of the girl in question.
I was shocked at the coincidence.
You see, "Alice" is also the name of the concept that underlies the whole project.
Concept?
A highly adaptive autonomous artificial intelligence.
In English, that would be Artificial Labile Intelligence Cybernated Existence.
The initials form the acronym ALICE.
Our ultimate goal is to transform an artificial Fluctlight into an ALICE.
Welcome to our Project Alicization.
That sounds so complicated.
I don't quite understand everything, either,
but they said that if they had recorded the Fluctlight of this girl, Alice,
their research would've made huge advances.
Meaning that...
Remember how I said that in the virtual world, time passes at a blazing speed?
Yeah.
Before they'd even realized what had happened, two days had gone by in the virtual world,
and that girl's Fluctlight had already been corrected by the Axiom Church.
Corrected?
I thought the Fluctlights were the subjects of the experiment. They were given that kind of authority?
I was told it shouldn't have been possible.
But some artificial Fluctlights are able to perform "sacred arts,"
which are system access rights that appear as magic.
They think they might've found some kind of back door.
Sorry! I have to go back.
What's up?
They said that they'd let me pay Kirito-kun a visit when he sleeps. It's almost time for that.
Tell us how he's looking, all right?
He's inside a machine, so I might not get to see his face.
This one's unit four.
And that one's unit five.
Prototype one and unit six, now under construction, are at the Roppongi branch,
while two and three are installed in the lower shaft.
Aki-san!
What are you doing here?
Taking care of Kirigaya-kun, of course.
But I thought you were a nurse at a hospital in Chiyoda Ward.
Were you pretending, just like Kikuoka-san?
Of course not.
I really am a nurse. Not like that old charlatan.
It's just that the school I graduated from happens to be the Tokyo Self-Defense Force Higher School of Nursing.
I am Sergeant First Class Aki Natsuki.
I take on full responsibility of protecting young Kirigaya-kun's life and limb!
And so on!
I'm counting on you, then.
Don't worry. He's in good hands.
Kirito-kun is coming back, isn't he?
Of course.
Kirito-kun's Fluctlight is hard at work inside the treatment program, even as we speak.
And besides, we're talking about the hero who cleared SAO, right?
Asuna-san?
There's something I need to tell you.
Actually, not just you.
It's something I should confess to all the veterans of SAO.
I assume you already know that during the SAO incident
Kayaba Akihiko and I were hiding in the mountains of Nagano?
I had a micro-bomb implanted in my chest.
Because of that, for two years,
I was forced to tag along with him and help with his terrible plan.
But that wasn't really true.
I was well aware that the bomb would never go off.
The weapon he implanted in me was a ruse meant to stave off any criminal charges against me.
It was the only present he ever gave me.
Apparently, by the time he got into Toto Institute of Technology,
Kayaba-kun was already the head of development at Argus.
But I didn't know anything about that.
All I could see was a scrawny, introverted kid, immersed in his research.
You gotta step outside once in a while. Fresh air means fresh ideas!
I need to come up with a way to emulate the feeling of natural light on the skin.
I began dating Kayaba-kun,
but I couldn't understand why he stayed with me for so long.
Well, it's more like...

understood anything about him in the first place.
When I went to his mountain lodge, it wasn't because I wanted to be his accomplice.
I...
intended to kill Kayaba-kun.
But... I'm sorry, Asuna-san.
I...
couldn't kill him.
Kayaba-kun figured out that I was armed with a knife.
He only said, "What am I going to do with you?" like he always did,
and then went right back to Aincrad.
I... I...
Neither Kirito-kun nor I have ever hated you for that.
In fact, I'm not even sure if I really feel any hate for Kayaba Akihiko himself.
It's true that a lot of lives were lost in that incident.
The commander's crime is simply unforgivable.
But—and I know this is a really selfish thing to say—
I'm sure that I will look back on the days I passed with Kirito-kun in that world
and think of it as the best time of my life.
Just as he is guilty of his sin, so am I and so is Kirito-kun.
And so are you, Rinko-san.
But these aren't crimes we can atone for by being tried and punished.
The day might never come when we are forgiven for our sins.
And that means we have to continue to face what we've done.
Really, what am I going to do with you?
Coming all the way here?
What's going on? It's still early in the morning...
Was that...
a dream?
