Leafa begged me to help the one that was under attack,

so I pulled the aggressor away and lured it into a lake,

whereupon the other one finished it off.

Leafa named the monster Tonkii,

and after sprouting eight wings,

it carried us back to the path leading to the upper world.

On our way back, we saw a huge labyrinth

hanging from the roots of the World Tree

and a golden longsword at the bottom that shone in its brilliance...

Excalibur.

I'd planned to take it for myself at some point, too.

Well, you have been spending all your time in New Aincrad.

But how'd people find it, anyway?

Player characters can't fly in Jötunheimr.

And it's so high up that unless you could,

you'd never spot it.

Maybe someone else saved one of Tonkii's friends

and triggered the quest flag like we did.

I guess that's what it comes down to.

I mean, "unique" appearance, only a real weirdo would want to save it—

rather, a very kind-hearted soul.

in which an NPC happened to offer Excalibur as the reward for completion.

From what I heard, the quest doesn't sound so peaceful.

It's not a fetch quest or escort mission.

Instead, it's about killing a certain number of monsters.

As a result, everyone in Jötunheimr is trying to kill as many as they can.

Yeah, that hardly sounds peaceful at all.

But isn't that a bit odd?

The Holy Sword Excalibur is sealed at the bottom of a dungeon hanging in mid-air that's swarming with Dreadlords.

So how's it figure that an NPC is offering it as a quest reward?

Now that I think about it...

I guess it'd make some sense if the NPC just took them to the dungeon.

Well, we'll find out when we see it for ourselves.

It too was blessed by the World Tree, Yggdrasil,

and covered with lush greenery and water.

We hill giants and our servants, the animals, lived together in peace and harmony.

Below Jötunheimr lies Niflheim, the land of frost.

Thrym, the king of the frost giants who inhabit that realm,

snuck into Jötunheimr and cast Excalibur, known as the sword which cuts all trees and iron,

into the Lake of Urd, which is at the center of the world.

The sword cut the thickest root of the World Tree,

thereby severing Jötunheimr from Yggdrasil and the blessings it conferred.

So that's Excalibur?

Masses of frost giants, led by Thrym from Niflheim, began to assail Jötunheimr

and put up a fortress and many castles,

while capturing and imprisoning us, the hill giants.

And on the frozen Lake of Urd, now naught but a mammoth block of ice,

they constructed a castle, Thrymheim, from which they rule this land.

My two sisters and I escaped to the bottom of a frozen lake,

but we lack the power we once possessed.

But the frost giants are still not satisfied

and mean to kill all our servants, the animals, that call this land their home.

If that comes to pass, our power will fade,

and they will be able to lift Thrymheim to the surface of Alfheim itself.

Wh-What?

If that happens, the town of Arun will get wiped out!

King Thrym wishes to bury Alfheim in snow

and push onwards to the zenith of the World Tree, Yggdrasil.

He covets the golden apple that is said to grow there.

Thrym and his generals have grown frustrated with their inability to slay my servants,

so they have begun to enlist assistance from you fairies.

Offering Excalibur as a reward,

he wishes to annihilate my servants.

But in fact King Thrym has no intention to relinquish the legendary sword to anyone.

If Excalibur is pulled from Thrymheim,

Yggdrasil's blessings will return to this realm,

and the castle will be doomed to melt and fall.

Th-Then he's lying about Excalibur being the quest reward?

Is this quest for real?

Thrym probably means to substitute it with Caliburn, the false sword that looks identical to Excalibur.

That's not fair!

Can a king get away with that?

"Unfair" is what Thrym does best. It is his most potent weapon.

However, he made one mistake.

He tasked most of his frost giants with helping the fairy warriors, so they are away from Thrymheim.

The castle's defenses are weaker than ever before.
