The police have just arrested David Kates

for the killings of six area women.

The 45-year-old resident was employed

at the Micro Metals Foundry.

Local residents are shocked by the arrest

and reports of body parts
being found in the residence.

He went to a position for a
mental hospital in New Jersey.

- The doctor did seem a
little different to me.

- He had some very unorthodox methods.

Did you know that he is camping

across the country this summer?

- That's not odd.

The odd thing is that, that David Kates

planned the trip for him.

- Why?

All the therapy,

it gave the patient something to do.

Kates told me about it yesterday.

The patient always claimed that

he Killed because of what he
had experienced in Vietnam.

- What was that?

- Well, in Vietnam, some of
the men under his command,

they were captured and mutilated.

And then this David Kates,

he ordered or he participated

in the mutilation of
the enemy female soldier

that was captured.
- How horrible.

- Oh, yes.

When he was committed
these murders though,

in Carson City in 1986,

he claimed it was the
result of a flashback

and it was a delayed stress syndrome.

- How could he just
explain away the killings?

Well, he had a normal life

for 20 years after the war and then,

- After 20 years?

And why those women?

- No one knows why. He just
snapped after 20 years.

But he said that it had
something to do with that,

these women, they had long black hair

and this how somehow triggered
him and he had a flashback.

He killed
them because of their hair?

- He said he believed that they
were around this major time

as the officer that was
mutilated in Vietnam

and that he feared for himself and his men

and that he had to eliminate them.

What
do you want me to do?

- I want you to keep a close eye on him

and keep me informed at all times.

I'm going to have him put over

into maximum security
again as soon as I can.

I think he's faking. I
think he's very dangerous.

Police and Department
of Corrections personnel

are combing the countryside

for escaped serial murderer, David Kates.

Kates was found not guilty
by reason of insanity

for deaths and mutilations
of six area women

killed nearly five years ago.

He was transferred from a maximum

to a minimum security prison
three days before his escape.

Nancy Benson, a psychiatric nurse,

was killed by Kates during his escape.

The governor is calling

for an investigation of the incidents.

These killings, I mean, why does he do it?

What would make a person
kill total strangers?

- Well, we can't say for sure what it is,

but tell you what we think it is.

there's probably something in his past

that caused a tremendous
hatred towards women

and probably something in his present life

just triggered that hatred

and his rage got out of
control and he started killing.

Judging by the length of
time between the killings,

apparently he can control that rage

and unless he either loses control

or we get lucky and get a break,

we just may never catch him.

- Why does he kill them
like that? He cut them off.

- How or why he kills them

doesn't really make any difference.

What he does to the corpses
is what's significant.

The dismemberment in the bathtub

is symbolic of taking your enemy apart

and scattering the parts to the wind.

You do that so they
can't come back together

and never get you.

That's very, very sick

- And this man is very, very dangerous.

isn't really that common,

but it does go back a long way in history.

Back in the Spanish
Inquisition in the Middle Ages,

that was like one of the
common forms of execution.

Even in "Custer's Last Stand,"”

Indians dismembered the bodies.

They felt the spirit
couldn't go on to heaven

unless the body was in one piece.

When I was in Vietnam,

we used to go against this
North Vietnamese battalion

every once in a while

and they caught a couple of our people

and that's what they did to them.

They had a woman CO that
was extremely vicious.

You know, one night we
got 'em in an ambush

and we managed to catch their CO.

I'll leave it to your
imagination what we did,

but we never had any
trouble with them anymore.

- That's interesting.

The only thing we could think of is,

maybe the killer thought
gene knew something

and he panicked and he
had to kill her too.

He doesn't seem like
a guy who would panic.

- I understand you were

on this police department at one time.

- Seems like a lifetime ago.

I quit to become a private detective.

- Is that how you knew Nancy Conte?

- No, we were neighbors.

God, we got so close.

her to join the police force.

This must be a difficult
case for you to work on.

- It's difficult or not,

and compare it to the prints

you lifted at the crime scenes.

I just had had this hunch.

I mean, he gave me this bowl story about

being in the military,

but there's nothing in his
records indicating that he

ever went overseas.

In fact that he was far off.

enjoys what he's doing.

- That's a safe assumption to make.

of the killings since Nancy's death?

- Besides Jean and Nancy being roommates?

- They were all at the police station

just prior to being killed.

- What are you getting at?

- I think it's someone with
ties in the department.

- Do you have any evidence
to support that theory?

- I haven't made the connection yet,

but I'm sure there is one.

It could be anything.

They made a complaint,

- You have to find a connection

between all the people
killed before Nancy.

The only common item

stolen from each of the
victims has been her keys.

Why?

- Some killers like to take a trophy.

It helps 'em relive the experience.

And what's the best way for
him to relive that experience

- By handling the trophy.

- To relive the experience
at the scene of the crime,

he took their keys to go back
to the scene of the murders?

He wouldn't take that big
a chance on getting caught.

Using that new identity,

which culminated in the of several members

of the local law enforcement.
