[Miss Chun is a Litigator]

[Episode 14]

Tumi. Xiao Zheng and I will rest here for now.

We'll enter the city once he feels better.

What are you looking at?

Do you want to meet the magistrate with such a frail look?

It will ruin your image.

Right, Tumi?

Yes, please listen to Lord Han.

Rest here for your own sake.

While you take care of the matters at home, be careful.

It's always good to be careful.

We'll find you when we're done.

No rush. Just take good care of your matters.

I'll handle the case files of Laishui.

You don't need to worry.

But Luoyang is a key destination.

I hope you'd come with us.

Contact us if you need anything.

We're here for you.

Lord Han. I do have a favor to ask.

Tell me.

Madam Xu has never liked me very much.

Guo'er has a temper.

She can't stand to see me bullied.

Things may get heated.

Can I leave Guo'er here with you?

I know you're like sisters.

You can entrust her to us.

Thank you, My Lords.

You don't need to be so formal.

Solve your problems fast.

See you later.

You'll have a lot to do.

Don't worry.

What's wrong?

I can rest for a day or two on the inspection tour.

What about you?

Don't you have to go to Luoyang for the ink stone?

Don't worry, I have a plan.

Tumi. You must be exhausted.

Rest well tonight.

Master, Miss, you finally came.

Xiao Qin, why are you here?

Madam told me to wait here.

Is she in trouble?

It was Old Madam's idea to sue you.

Madam was against it.

She wanted to wait for you to take her home.

But Old Madam couldn't wait.

Sounds like a long story. Let's talk inside.

All right, let's go.

Enjoy.

- Please. - Please.

How can it be?

Old Madam made such a big fuss.

She even disturbed the prison inspection.

What else did your madam tell you?

Forget it. Let's eat first.

We'll visit the Xu residence tomorrow.

Sir, what can I get for you?

A plain noodle.

Tumi should arrive in the county tomorrow.

If it goes well, they won't be stuck in Laishui for long.

But Luoyang…

Don't worry. I've sent my hidden guards there to keep an eye on it.

It's time to face him head-on.

He managed to escape every time you fought.

I wonder how many assassins they have in the Ink Dance Pavilion.

For now, there's only one way to find out.

You are referring to that girl?

She wouldn't talk, would she?

I'll get her to talk.

Miss.

What's wrong?

Miss, can I share the room with you tonight?

Didn't your madam give you money for a room?

She did, but I'm scared.

Get over it. I'm not used to sharing my room.

Besides, we're all close by. There is nothing to be scared of.

It's been a long day. Get some rest.

I heard there's a wild lake around here.

I'll go for a walk later.

Miss.

Are you going to that lake at night?

You'd better not.

Something happened there a few days ago.

It's haunted.

What do you mean?

There was a man who lived in the Fortune Residence.

We don't know why.

He probably had a nightmare that night and started screaming

while he was running out barefoot with his hair untied.

He kept running all the way to the lake, jumped in and never came out.

For real?

How do I dare to make that up?

People have drowned in that lake before.

The corpse would surface within a few days.

It's the first time that it still hasn't surfaced.

The government office sent someone to search for it, but they found nothing.

Isn't it scary?

Yes, it's so scary.

- Miss, I may have nightmares. - Wait.

Did he swim to the shore and leave?

No, no way.

That night, he screamed all the way to the lake.

Many people woke up and followed him.

They saw him jump into the lake. But no one saw him come out.

Please go back to your rooms.

I am closing up now.

All right.

Miss.

You fight with Guo'er like a warrior. Now you're scared.

I-I'm just scared of those.

Don't worry, even if there is a ghost, it won't come to you.

Because you haven't done anything wrong.

Don't worry.

Miss.

Brother Ye, I knew you'd get it.

Brother Ye, we have a family business to take care of in Laishui County.

We'll join Lord Kang later and head to Luoyang.

Where are you going?

Laishui County.

What a coincidence, we'll meet again.

Next time, you will teach me some moves for self-defense.

I can protect you.

I don't want to rely on you all the time.

I want to protect you, too.

You're keeping many secrets, like right now.

When will I see the real you?

If you don't want to talk about it, let's talk about something else.

I bet you've become how you are because you've received kindness from others.

Or you wouldn't have helped me and saved me without hesitation, right?

How about this? Let's trade.

One story for another.

I know everything about you.

What you cherish the most are the law books.

Family is everything to you.

You want to be the first female litigator ever.

You are fierce in court, but you're gentle in nature.

The first time you dressed a wound, you were inexperienced but it didn't hurt at all.

You are the gentlest and kindest person.

I can't express myself.

I have a lot of secrets.

It's very dangerous to deal with me. But you don't care at all.

You see me as a friend.

No one gets to say that you don't know how to talk.

Why do you trust me?

I don't know.

Maybe it's because you helped me the first time we met.

Maybe I made up my mind to trust you then.

- Take a bite. - Me?

How do I know if it's poisoned?

Wait. Don't forget your night shift.

Stop there.

What are you holding?

My Lord, I'm taking out the leftovers.

Turn around.

My Lord, I dare not upset you with my ugly face.

Turn around.

I don't need it.

The richest family in Laishui doesn't need the help of its humble in-laws.

Mother.

I got Chun Dashan here only to take you away.

Just go.

- But… - But what?

Chun Dashan is a lowly military man.

His daughter has rudimentary knowledge of the law.

- How can she help me? - But…

Enough. You don't have a say in this.

Xiao Qin, go inform them.

Understood.

Come on.

What's going on?

- What is happing? - The guy...

- The guy got killed. - That family.

Why are they all so weird?

- It's them. - Unbelievable.

- Master, come on in. - So scary.

Let's go.

Old Madam, Madam, Master is here.

Husband!

Father-in-law, Tumi, you also came.

Greetings, Mother.

Greetings, Old Madam. Greetings, Madam.

You came also, in-law. Please be seated.

Dashan is on an inspection tour.

Tumi is visiting her mother's relatives.

How come you came together today?

That was the plan.

But Tumi traveled with her father for a while, helped Lord Kang with some of his work,

and got invited to join the trip.

She will visit her mother's Bai family once she's done.

I see. But Tumi is a young lady.

It's inappropriate for her to travel around with you guys.

Besides, her mother died young.

You two should plan things ahead for her.

I partially count as Tumi's grandmother.

Why don't you let me find her a good husband?

A girl can only lead a carefree life if she marries well.

That's the least we could do for her late mother.

My sister got married in Liu State and has a son.

He's about the same age as Tumi.

A handsome man and already a scholar.

His family owns a huge fine land.

If Tumi marries him, she'll lead a wealthy and leisurely life.

Don't worry, my in-law.

I won't ever let them bully her.

Thank you for your kind offer.

But she's my only granddaughter.

I'd like to keep her around for a few more years.

Besides, I don't want her to be far away from me.

I want to take care of her myself.

For how long can you keep looking?

You two are insensitive and have no idea what to do for Tumi.

She keeps showing up in court.

Do you know what they're saying about her?

But naturally, they don't say anything nasty in front of you.

Poor me. I heard it all.

What a humiliation for me.

If Tumi gets married in Liu State, the rumors won't get all the way there.

Even if they do, I can suppress them.

My daughter is a decent girl who helps people.

Let them talk. Old Madam, don't listen to them.

Don't feel humiliated.

If she is so decent, why would she act recklessly in court?

Who would dare to marry such a woman?

Since you are so concerned about the virtue of a woman, then tell me…

What should we do about a woman

- who disrespects her parents, mistreats her children, and poisons her husband? - You…

For the sake of our families, I never wrote to you about it.

So stop bullying us.

Tumi is everything to me.

No one can belittle her.

In-law, please don't be mad.

The Chun's family appreciates your kindness.

But I think I have a say on this matter.

You are right.

My mother meant well by offering that.

She meant well by humiliating my daughter?

She meant well by accusing me of abandoning my wife?

She didn't file the lawsuit to cause you trouble. She did it to-

That's enough. You don't get to talk.

Since you have your own plans for Tumi,

I won't make a fool of myself.

But don't even dream about getting a divorce.

Of course, in-law.

No one is allowed to abandon his wife and children in our family.

It's just that my son is on a difficult trip.

Your daughter is pregnant.

Why don't we take her home once we're done with work?

She's married into your family and is part of your family.

She shouldn't stay here for long.

Pack your things tonight.

Tomorrow morning, I'll send you where they're staying.

Mother, how can I leave you now?

Let me keep you company.

No need.

Walk the guests out.

Mother.

Husband.

[Residence of Noblewoman]

Husband.

Husband.

Husband, don't hold a grudge against my mother.

She has no choice.

Madam, please don't cry. You're pregnant.

Think about the baby.

If Old Madam is in trouble,

just tell us.

I…

It's all because of my father-

Xu Qing! You grinch!

You killed my big brother and showed no remorse.

What a monster.

What a monster! Don't you have a conscience?

- Come out! - Quit hiding!

What are you doing?

Brothers!

If the grinch doesn't come out, I'll hang myself right here today!

Remember. Set up my funeral at their house.

Yes, that's right.

- Right here. - Hold the funeral here.

How dare you act like hooligans here!

Look who it is.

Chun Dashan, the son-in-law of that grinch.

You may be a military official, but I'm not afraid of you.

Chun Dashan, listen up.

Xu Qing is a vicious woman.

She got a man outside and killed my brother to get rid of him.

And her daughter can't be decent, either.

You want to step forward for them? Fine.

Wait until she makes you a cuckold.

A cuckold.

Watch your mouth.

What are you going to do?

Even if you want to hang yourself now, I won't hold you back.

But if you keep talking nonsense,

I'll teach you a lesson.

Yeah, I'm so scared.

I dare you to come to the government office with me.

Let's sort things out. We have the laws.

She can't just kill people because she's rich.

- That's right.i> - Brothers.

Go get her.

- Hold on. - Go, keep up.

Who are you?

It doesn't matter.

What matters is what you said.

There are laws, and you're breaking them.

Do you know the punishment for breaking and entering?

Old Madam Xu killed your big brother?

Do you have evidence?

I guess you don't.

Then you are disturbing the Xu family by breaking into their house.

Let's take it to government office and see who's right.

Yes, let's go.

Let go of me!

How dare you?

God forbid!

I'm going to see an official right now.

Chun Dashan, I know someone of a higher rank than you.

I also know merciless killers.

- Just wait. - Yes.

Just wait.

What is going on here?

How come you're messing with those people?

Father-in-law, the group leader is my father's little brother, Fan Bai.

He has looked for trouble here many times.

He keeps saying that my father is not missing, but killed by my mother.

They've reported it to the government office.

Old Master is missing?

He just went on a trip and didn't contact with us for a while.

He used to do it all the time.

It's just that he's been gone for a long time.

Did the government office send people to look for him?

They did.

They couldn't find him.

But… The officials believed my mother.

They told her to stay in for a while to prevent the Fan family from making a scene.

It won't work.

Since the Fan family is convinced that Old Madam is responsible,

they won't let you off.

My father stopped them today. What about tomorrow?

We have to find out where he went.

We have nothing to do with it.

I swear.

Tumi, help me.

Help my mother.

It's a false accusation.

Old Madam Xu didn't approve of a girl being a litigator.

Naturally, Tumi wouldn't step forward now.

Xiao Qin. Madam is pregnant.

Take good care of her.

Take her back to rest.

Let's go.

Husband.

Husband.

Talk to him and Tumi about it.

If Old Madam finds out…

Just go!

What can I get for you?

- A pot of tea, please. - All right.

Father, Grandfather, don't you think what happened today was weird?

I heard that Old Master was from a poor family.

His family got better off thanks to the Xu Family after he married Old Madam Xu.

But look how they bullied the Xu family today.

And Old Madam accused you of abandoning your wife to get you here.

But she wouldn't tell us the truth.

She didn't want to implicate us.

She has a bad temperament, but she does love her only daughter.

So she forced your father to come and pick up her daughter.

She intends to handle everything herself.

She's afraid that my father will get implicated and leave her daughter here.

Old Master Fan doesn't sound like an upright man.

He visited brothels and went with every woman who came his way.

There is a rumor.

Old Master Fan once had an affair with a maid-

Tea coming.

Really.

- Not just one. - Here's your tea.

- He sent away so many of them. - Please enjoy.

You don't think he has a bastard kid, right?

Old Madam Xu loves her daughter.

She won't let anyone be a threat to her daughter.

Come on.

Miss.

Why are you here?

Greetings, Master, Old Master, Miss.

I told you to take care of Madam.

Why did you come?

She was worried about you and sent me to check on you.

Nonsense!

You're lying.

She sent you here because she's worried that we may leave her here.

Now that I'm back, I'll take care of everything.

Tell her to rest reassured.

No, Master. Madam...

Say no more.

Go back now and tell her what I said.

Father, I'll take you upstairs to rest.

I…

Come with me.

What is your relationship with Old Master?

Miss, you…

How did you know?

You greeted us at the inn with a disturbed look.

And you seemed restless at the Xu residence.

Someone terrifies you there, right?

You seemed fine with Madam in the afternoon, so it's Old Madam Xu.

You weren't afraid of her before Old Master disappeared.

What's so hard to guess?

Miss, please help me.

Did he disappear because of you?

No.

M-Maybe.

What do you mean?

I can't tell you.

I dare not tell you.

You want my help.

How do I help if you don't tell me the truth?

Miss, I will tell you everything.

Will you help me if I tell you?

We'll see.

Old Madam kept Madam around her all day after we went to the Xu residence.

She didn't want me there and assigned me to serve Old Master.

I thought it was all the same.

However, Old Master liked me a lot for some reason.

He said that he would tell Old Madam to take me in as a concubine after the trip.

But he never came back.

They say that Old Madam…

Old Madam didn't like Old Master messing around with prostitutes and maids,

so...

Miss, please help me.

If Old Madam finds out about me and Old Master,

maybe I'll be the next victim, Miss.

You're saying that you don't think that Old Master is missing.

That he is killed by Old Madam.

I don't know.

I'm just suspecting.

Miss, take me with you.

I can't stay here.

If Old Madam finds out about this, she'll either kill me,

- or sell me to… - Where's her maid, Granny Wang?

The Xu family is in trouble, and she's absent.

Only the young maids stayed there.

Granny Wang simply disappeared.

Old Madam said that she had work.

That's all I know.

What else did Old Master offer apart from marrying you?

He gave me five taels of silver.

Your secret is safe with me.

Guo'er is not here.

I can say that I need a maid and keep you here.

But you must decide what to do later.

Go back first. Don't keep Madam waiting.

[Confirm his identity. Get info on the Ink Dance Pavilion.]

Lord Han, something is up.

Come in.

Lord Han, please check on that lady.

What's wrong?

My belly hurts.

Your belly hurts?

Go get the physician.

No, it's too late.

Get a carriage. I need the best doctor in the county.

Don't worry. Our physician is very professional.

He'll be here soon.

You have a physician traveling with you?

What's so weird about having a physician traveling with us?

Your doctor only treats wounds.

I bet he can't cure my abdominal pain.

Find a carriage and take me to the county.

It's a long way from here.

You're in such pain. You will suffer on the way.

It's fine, I can bear with it.

Are you sure?

All right.

- Guards. - Here.

Get the carriage ready.

Yes, Lord Han.

When will it be ready?

I'm dying of pain.

Easy.

The horse needs to be properly fed.

How much longer will it take?

Why does the horse eat so much?

The horse is fed.

Let's go then.

Not yet.

Why not?

The carriage roof is broken.

They're fixing it.

Is the carriage fixed?

I think so.

Can we go now?

No.

Why not?

The horse is having diarrhea.

Maybe the hay was dirty.

Tell me everything you know.

You don't have to act sick to leave.

What do you want to know?

About the Ink Dance Pavilion.

What's that?

Never heard of it.

Since you won't tell me, I'll have to keep you here.

You…

What's the fuss at this hour?

- Go. - Yes.

Take them away.

- It's them. - Go!

It's the Fan family.

Mother.

It can't go on like this.

Let me ask Dashan and Tumi for help.

Tumi knows the law.

She will definitely clear your name.

A kind mother and a hell of a wife.

A beating is nothing.

Old Madam Xu is so hot-tempered?

Totally. Once she caught Old Master Fan in a brothel and smashed the place.

She didn't search the brothels after he went missing?

Not that I know.

- Waiter. - Coming.

- Young man. - Wine.

Father.

Are you out for a stroll?

Yeah, I still haven't walked around yet.

I thought you were going out to investigate the Xu case.

I heard everything.

Why do you want to investigate?

Old Madam clearly doesn't want us to intervene.

She wants us gone immediately.

Father, I'm just curious.

When I'm curious, I want to figure it out.

It's like a game.

We'll leave soon.

Let me look into it, please.

Fine, go ahead.

Thank you, Father.

Wait.

Stay close by.

Come back early.

Stay safe. It's not Bian State here.

Got it. See you.

[Unifon]

Here.

Have you heard about the case in Laishui?

- No. - No.

Someone killed himself in the lake.

- I haven't heard. - I haven't heard.

- Did the government office post a notice? - No.

Officer, have you heard about the case of the Xu family?

No. Never heard of it.

If that's it, please leave.

Go away, Miss.

Excuse me, I would like to ask how to get to the place you mentioned.

It's on the right.

- Over there? - That's right.

Good, thank you.

Husband, Father-in-law, I'm sorry.

I made many mistakes.

But we've come to this point.

Please

tell Tumi to help my mom for the sake of our families.

You heard her yesterday.

Your mother had plans.

She didn't want us to intervene.

If we agree to help today, it's against her will.

My mother lacks judgment.

Don't listen to her.

I'm incapable of anything.

I can only ask you and Tumi for help.

Dashan is a military official of the Upper Ninth Rank.

And I'm pregnant with a kid.

If my mom goes to jail, Dashan will be affected.

Stop talking nonsense.

Listen carefully.

Even if I get demoted today, I won't let my daughter step up for her.

Husband.

Husband.

Husband!

Tumi, you're back.

I'm back, Grandfather.

Grandfather, I heard what Madam said.

Don't take it to heart whatever she says.

Grandfather.

Please don't be mad.

Ever since your father and I had the chance to be free from the army,

we've been behaving extremely cautiously.

But all the hardship on the inspection tour turns out to be

a bargaining chip for that woman to help her mother.

What a disappointment.

Grandfather, I think we should take care of it.

Why?

You don't want me to help because you think Old Madam won't appreciate it

and will hate us for knowing her weakness.

That may cause us trouble.

But I think we should help.

If Old Master indeed passed away and Old Madam was involved,

the others would only see us as relatives of the murderer

even though we were not even so close.

It's a critical moment for our family.

We can't let anyone tarnish our name.

So we have to help and make it impossible for Old Madam to criticize us.

You may be right.

But she doesn't want us to help.

I have an idea.
