question are you rolling we were excited

from the very beginning knowing that we

were going to get to reunite Carol and

Daryl on this show go you see Daryl and

Carol working together again in tandle

which is something that I missed I was

so excited to come back most of all

because Melissa was here working with

Melissa McBride she's a riot she's

really funny I really love being able to

see Carol in Jeopardy that looked great

I've been waiting to meet her since we

started season two Melissa

who where's Carol

Ben she's been at the

Commonwealth now that you're gone and

you should have been back by now all

these things are starting to stir up

it's too

quiet remember 12 years ago when I axed

my husband's head in I handed you the a

kind of traumatizing I'd never done that

as a human being

before Hey where's my necklace of ears

by the way right where are they who what

were you thinking I don't know I was

into

[Music]

accessories it's been nice to have

Melissa here just getting to see Norman

again period is you know it's fun I mean

she was always supposed to be part of

the show she was part of the show before

the first script was ever written that

was a given from the beginning something

something that I was very eager for the

writers were very eager for the fans of

course were very eager

for just being on set in this whole new

environment but feeling like Carol don't

move immediately that was really fun you

going to shoot

are you crazy certifiable where is

he where is my friend they got

themselves stored on a damn boat a boat

to where to France okay her journey had

to feel like classic Walking

Dead you know I wanted the zombies to be

a threat I wanted to really get into

seeing how Carol's brain clicks because

she finds herself in situation after

situation where she has to be quick on

her feet I was really grateful that Greg

was here because you know this is all

new to me and everybody's been situated

already so it was really nice to have

his familiar face here prob wouldn't

touch the fence cuz you notice that it's

electrified

okay somebody

help what are you doing snooping on my

property I'd like to think that we can

rely on the kindness of

strangers I was coming into the show

with no experience in this world at all

ready to go go working with Greg Niko

was a real dream he was somebody so

immersed in this world that I was able

to really get comfortable here very

quickly Melissa and and Manish to just

come in and watch the playback of I met

with Manish a few times and we just

thought that he had a great quality for

the role that he had a great openness a

great tenderness he brought a different

color from any other character that we

had on the show you can spend the night

here if you

want now he's Hing it now working with

Melissa mcbry this season has been so

much fun we literally just laugh all day

it was just a tool bus for so many

scenes we were able to explore and

figure out how to navigate this journey

together I never ventured too far you

could go

anywhere I have everything

here for Carol's Journey the external

journey is I need to find my friend but

internally it is really about resolving

grief to the best that she can and

forgiving herself for some of the things

she's

done the season 2 episode where Sophia

comes out of the bar and I remember

everything about

it we did a lighting transition from

night to day and all of a sudden she

finds herself standing there and I

recreated the same

shots it was fascinating to me because

it was all right

there was almost exactly like verbatim

even the little girl that they cast for

so yeah the mannerisms the camera angles

lighting took me back to that

moment you okay

yeah fine we were trying to find ways to

succinctly Echo the past to try to dig

into the inner life of Carol and

Cherokee Rose just seemed like a good

way to do that they represent hope you

know yeah I know all story behind it

related back to Daryl and Carol looking

for a lost loved one I believe this

one bloom for your little

girl for Carol Daryl is

home she feels a little lost without

[Music]

him the idea of home on a different

meaning for

Daryl do you hope for Daryl to stay

here yes but I think he misses Carol and

theis Daryl was torn between two homes

and you absolutely see Isabelle Daryl

and lauron as a family unit baseball

scene of course is meant to sort of

represent exactly

that the baseball scene was fun it's

written laurant knocks the first ball

out of the park or whatever that didn't

happen the first time all right I got

another one scene was really fun because

it was so loose you know sometimes the

loose ones with the bus you know you're

also doing it on the side of a castle in

a certain style of clothing and the

baseball bat made out of the leg of a

table Cricket again no it's Baseball

American baseball yeah it was funny too

cuz I think clance didn't quite know

baseball terms in real life we need a

catcher what's a catcher cuz we don't

play baseball in France like it's not a

thing I could tell she really didn't

know that what that was we a catcher all

right we got a catcher it just turned

into an actual game it was fun to shoot

cuz you get to add liveit all right

B you start to know each other's quirks

and stuff and you can add them in you

can play with them as you would a family

I had the video on my phone of me

hitting it but by mistake and we lost a

board

way yeah it went so far away and we

never found it we actually just got to

witness Louie realizing he was really

good at baseball yeah he got really good

he's like I've never played baseball

before and then he's like pow that's

what I'm talking about Norman and I we

got really close to season sometimes he

gives me one of a Buds and we just

listen to music between takes we Bond

over music we Bond over funny things we

tell jokes a lot he's a really cool kid

good job

Slugger you sure you want to do this if

you're not moving forward and you're

done for the premier episode for season

2 we needed a big finale the lightning

strikes the generator the generator

explodes the the Walkers are flooding

through there's fires everywhere there's

no choice they have to

go I've never been up in one of these

before I have a little bit of experience

flying plane I've flown a plane twice a

long time ago so I had some familiarity

inside the cockpit it's a big leap of

faith to get on a little plane that been

Frankenstein together and hope that

you're going to get across to Europe

they got to drive the plane through the

Walkers to get to the runway I wanted

one gag where Carol gets attacked by a

walker and swings it into the spinning

propeller

blade my little Indiana Jones

homage then it comes time for them to

take off how can we do this and be safe

anytime we're shooting in the front of

the a plane we to take the propeller off

so you could push it Sebastian our stunt

coordinator and he said oh well no

you'll be fine we'll just have the stunn

people get hit by the wing and fall

down he said really he said yeah yeah

it'll be great don't worry about it the

stunt team did a fantastic job of

keeping everybody safe and giving us

some really spectacular footage there's

nothing to be afraid of up here

oh camera we went to a lot of beautiful

places on this show but I have to say

the French Ops is top two or three of

the beautiful places we went the drive

up to get to the French Alps was

incredible and then just being on the

ground in the Alps the visuals were

stunning and then to see the Drone shots

when they go over the mountains and

these huge Vistas

incredible selfishly I will say I just

wanted to shoot in the French Alps and

if we can't shoot the French Alps as the

French Alps then maybe we can shoot the

French Alps as Greenland because the

story really demanded that Ash and Carol

stop somewhere so we were like how can

we complicate that in a way that gives

us some reality and some struggle rather

than just boom they're in Paris you know

so Greenland was the logical place and

it was the the place that real Pilots

would plan to land if they needed to

make a

landing but I was skeptical that we

would be able to really find the Alps at

that time of year that would look

Greenland like

directors like their toys they like

their ships and their planes and their

trains we've had to do aerial

photography we've had to do onboard

plane photography some we've done live

some we've done against Green Screen it

adds enormous complexity but it's so

rich in terms of the scale and scope it

gives us locations did an amazing job

and it was a very hard logistical thing

to get everybody up there and we know

have a big Walker sequence there

that's you really beautiful amazingly

executed by this entire crew and team

and Dan pural who directed that when I

talked to Dan parol about it I said I

think it would be really fun if we went

for a different look with these Walkers

and that their skin looked more

preserved and more mummified but again

it's always about utilizing the

environment and taking the foliage and

the growth that was on the mountain side

there incorporating it into the makeups

and uh it worked out

great welcome to

Greenland you know things happen with

Carol back where she's at and where darl

where he's at so it becomes more of a

dual focus it also injects a lot of new

energy coming from Melissa as Carol and

her journey to try to figure out what's

happened to her friend all right spotted

at least two of them everyone follow me

today we're filming the scene where Emil

Fu Isabelle and the rest of the group

have been told that lauron might be here

and are coming to try and rescue him

this was written as a windmill and the

writers had in mind a classic style

windmill but it's a Watermill it's a

beautiful old factory that ground grain

it works really beautifully for our

story because it's hard to find complete

ruins anymore and of course in the

post-apocalyptic world of The Walking

Dead finding ruins is good for us so we

love this but it's very hard to work in

there's one way up and there's one way

down on a spiral staircase and this big

window here you can see very shortly

someone's going to fly out of there so

we're replacing the glass panel with a

breakable glass to put a stunt man

through and he's in a fight with Daryl

Dixon which was a mistake on his behalf

to do the choreography for a fight scene

sometimes gets kind of crammed and it

looks great and you'd never know on

camera

but uh it's a little harder to do than

in a big flat

room that episod I think the first time

that Isabelle killed

somebody lauron is in Jeopardy and so

she has a big change of heart her

realizing all that with Daryl while this

is all happening has really got their

bond in a tight tight place don't worry

when the water goes back out we'll go in

and get

them and then we'll go with you if the

off still

stands Norman and I talked about Let's

do an adult relationship that doesn't

feel TV forced you know there was always

the hope that there would feel like a

dynamic chemistry between the two of

them but it wasn't a given and it wasn't

a necessity and of course it happened

and so it made sense to us to want to

give that more visual realization the

kiss was sort of a way of saying yes

there are feelings between these two

that are deep what does this

mean you could come with me he cares

about her and they've gone through this

journey together they understand each

other there's weaknesses that are

exposed in each other that are shared

between them intimately which just

causes you to get stronger and stronger

and that's really what's happening it

allows to show aside of Daryl that the

audience hasn't seen we were trying to

really keep it real and then yeah we had

a kiss that was mosquito crazy flying in

our mouths and you know bouncing off our

faces during this big romantic Sunset

moment oh my god well the only thing we

were really worried about were all the

insects on each other's faces she's a

trooper and it was it was still fun and

the scene came out super beautiful

I used to work here as a janitor i'

sweep the floors of galleries full of

religious

bings I wonder why the greatest artists

feel compelled to depat the same violent

imagery over and over

again we had a great opportunity to film

outside the Lou in the streets and

inside having the Lou for ourselves it's

one of the greatest memory of work I

have it's a very special place

Place took about a year to plan and be

able to shoot at the L that was a huge

task we had to visit there many times

and sort of talk it through and and

figure out how we were going to do it

[Music]

when we created the character of Jan in

the writer room we had this idea of this

backstory that I always wanted to get to

Jana is this simple

woman working honestly in love with her

husband planning to have a

family and that is taken away from

her the idea was having the opportunity

to tell another perspective of the

breakout of the zombie apocalypse

Through The Eyes of a character it's the

Genesis of Jana

transformation into the character that

she is

now and that comes across by her

witnessing the death of someone that she

loves they don't know exactly where the

danger is and then she sees those

Walkers

coming and there's nothing she can do

about it

looking at her knowing that he's dying

and she's completely helpless that's a

terrible feeling for a character a death

of the one that you love that you could

not imagine in real life those are the

moments that people remember you can

spray blood till the cows come home but

if it's an emotional death then then you

know you got

them the only light that she had was her

husband and when that's gone then

everything is

possible the Mona Lisa is a figure who

represents the idea of women who are

hidden women who are watching women who

are observing and women who are holding

secrets so those three Mona Lisa Jan and

Carol all are of a piece in that

sense what do you see in her expression

she looks sad meeting them in front of

the Mona Lisa that was very fascinating

to put those two characters together

because of some of the similarities that

they have but also the differences Carol

absolutely relates to Jana in how this

world has affected her the losses the

guilt a woman gazed on by millions never

actually

seen But I see a secret in that

smile something withheld those women

they are nearly the same the Apocalypse

made them become someone that they

wouldn't expect you can't imagine what I

have done to get this

far I understand I do they both lost

their reason to leave so they had to

find something else these pains we

carry we women need to learn to let them

go but we have to forgive

ourselves for all the

losses every character who's villainous

has some aspect that you can empathize

with Jana has gone to a very dark place

and Carol has gone to a pained place but

not a dark place Jana is a really

compelling character it just hits

everyone so differently but she's taken

that path of control if you feed a

monster you're going to get a monster

it's the original you

know how are you so sure it's the real

thing cuz I'm the one who took it

out Sy bear with us it's for the best

stop saying that you're going to kill

him the moment where soie dies to me was

the most shocking of season 2 I

gasped we always wanted Sylvie to have a

heroic story where she is fighting to

save L and at the same time we were

figuring out this story about the

ceremony and the test and I said to the

room well if you're going to test a kid

to make sure he is what you think he is

you're not going to just pick some

Walker off the street it would be a

special Walker so who better to confirm

our faith in luron than someone we've

just lost but who loved him

dearly when I found out that Sylvie was

the one to test long honestly I

was a bit shocked I jumped out of my

chair I was reading the script and I was

like no and now her love will deliver us

all Lo song does not think of himself as

a villain and he believes in what he

says okay the way we're handling it is

in a big ceremony loang has slowly been

grinding under the

pressure he has a great faith and that

faith is put to the test and ultimately

his faith buckles does that make him a

bad person that's the big question drink

this it'll relax you I feel relaxed

drink it anyway it's difficult to

navigate sort of spiritual Purity and

the maintenance of power it'll all be

lost if he can't prove that what he's

been saying is right he really has to

feel that he is doing the right thing

with this and that the boy Lal Will

Survive there you go yeah when she

walked up onto the set people were a

little taken a b because you could

really see it's her so you see like her

Humanity in her face there's a moment

she's coming in to deliver this bite

where she stops does she see him does

she know who he is it's just a flash of

a second laon's reaction to seeing

Sylvie was super Starling to him it's

pretty scary and to tell you the truth I

can't even look at her when I saw myself

the first time in the mirror I loved it

some women look really pretty as zombies

I don't know how they pull that off

Jason Hodes who a makeup artist on the

show really did something amazing Jason

made this perfect broken neck and also

uh synthetical Shake Bones the idea of

being transformed and be completely

different from myself I loved it I

laughed yeah I laughed when I saw Leica

and I think even as a walker Leica still

had this look of a beautiful Walker you

know the had this B fil this scene with

Lou just was laughing of the the time

because I was coming really close to him

and just screaming in his ear so we

wanted to love all the time it was sad

to say goodbye to this character we've

come to know so well ultimately she

relished it and she did an amazing job

mer to

byebye get us out of it hurry up hold on

today we are at the Melle it's amazing

it's great location for war getting to

ride on the ATVs was fun getting to

drive it but the rehearsals were I think

maybe more fun than actually shooting it

I had a little more free reain in the

rehearsals Carol's riding an alterrain

vehicle and strapped to the back of the

vehicle is our friend kadon kadon has

been used as a bait it's not very fun to

be used as a bait Kon couldn't run away

so the only thing k to do is to yell go

go so guess what he did he yelled go

these walkers on the show are really

frightening actually I was really scared

when I saw them get me loose the dummy

really looks like me the only thing is

that his head is a bit bigger than mine

so I told them listen okay I have a big

head but not so big you know but it's

amazing I did like the challenge of

being able to DW drive it as quickly as

I could through some very narrow spaces

and the challenge of you know not

hitting anybody

I read that scene my response was was

literally this me the killer me no no no

how I originally pitched it I wanted

them to throw in Isabelle's half dead

body into the cell and as she dies I

noticed there's a key in her hand we've

already established that she used to be

a pickpocket that was one last heroic

thing she did she picked the pocket on

one way

in you free let me out

[Applause]

I remember it was the first time that I

met clemon I've been waiting to meet us

since we started season 2 and we kept

missing each other cuz we were never in

the same locations and I saw her in the

trailers we just had a big long hug and

it was so so nice to meet her I liked it

that they intersected when they did she

was the piece to get Carol to to Daryl

what are you doing here even came for a

friend of mine for the moment when it's

Isabelle dies we wanted a really moving

ending to the character no no no no no

losing her is not only terrible for

Daryl but he knows it's terrible for Lon

it's a personal failure cuz he's a guy

who says I'll do this for you and he

does it and he hasn't done it that's

what he feels he thought he'd keep them

safe and he hasn't kept her safe make

sure he's taken care of I hope fans will

remember the way she keeps her heart and

her mind open

I can see

them the

[Music]

fireflies there was a lot of talk about

how Daryl and Carol reunite cuz

obviously it was one of the centerpieces

of the season for us I'm here to bring

these two characters together again

which the fans seem to like them it was

written that she finds me in jail and

the door opens and I'm kind of like you

know is that you as we were filming

Daryl and Carol scenes as we were seeing

some of the footage we're going like

maybe that doesn't maximize the

opportunity and that's I think what

Norman especially

felt I woke up in the middle of the

night I grabbed my phone and I wrote

down this idea that I had about the

meeting who just came to me and I was

asleep I sent it to David and he and

Jason both liked it and they took that

idea and they just elevated 1,000% that

was Norman's idea yeah then it changed

into something a little bit different to

go from here to here to here to here to

what is such a cool idea you know cuz I

know the fans they're like when you

going to find him when you going to find

him when you going to find him and it

has to be legendary

[Music]

filming the moment when Ash bust into

the van at M man was pretty intense cuz

I'd never been in a scene with that many

Walkers

before they were really committed to

their characters you know you feel

really threatened in that small enclosed

space we spent I think three days with

about

100

Walkers there got to be something alive

in there the choreography of that scene

was pretty amazing with the amped up

Walker surrounding the car camera goes

above and you see just how Wild the

scenario

is kind of reminded me of getting a car

wash you know when you go through a car

wash and they're shaking the car you see

the amazing Prosthetics that Theo's team

has done it brings it to to life in a

way that actually hits

you being inside this car with smashing

up against the windows you know chaos in

every direction it was really intense

Daryl finds the case with the

tranquilizer darts in it and injects

several of the Walkers and the idea is

that they start tearing apart other

walkers around

them we had air mortars blowing blood

onto the windows from different angles

we really wanted it to be once we were

inside the car with them that there was

just Gore all over the

windows you're just wondering waiting

for something to strike and you don't

know where it's going to happen so I

like the suspense of

that as the zombies are also attacking

the car head first running into the car

smash blood everywhere that was pretty

challenging asz there was a lot of stuff

going on you see darl and Carol working

together again in tand which is

something that I

missed my favorite moment from that day

was how much fun we had with the amount

of dead bodies on the ground I mean

there was like hundreds of dead bodies

and it was super sticky super

bloody it was fun I like all that

stuff the trick question a is she has

been a tremendous villain for two

seasons so her death has to live up to

the glory of her evil

doings I was so excited about that

death ium my love devoured by the

monsters theate have you ever known that

kind of

loss she really did believe she was

doing the right thing for the

community but that's it it's

gone the death is so spectacular oh it's

not only what we had to play but it's a

technical challenge as

well we really wanted her death to be

gut-wrenching what niiko and his team

came up with was

horrifying we built this really cool

animatronic head that had all these

little bladders in it so that the eyes

would inflate we put blood tubes in the

nose and the ears and the mouth and it

had like four-way jaw mechanism four-way

neck mechanism so her head goes back and

we open the jaw so wide that the jaw

pour open and split open like her head

just

exploded the makeup and the blood and

the movement I love that that was so

exciting so what we ended up doing was

we scanned her head here in France and

then at K&B in La we sculpted it we

built all the mechanisms we matched the

hair and the costume and everything and

then we shot it as an insert more

movement more movement side to side on

the head there you go there you go it

was funny I would have to call her from

La hey I need really detailed photos of

your teeth she's like I'm on holiday

with my family right now I'm like okay

get a ruler and put it next to your eyes

I'm in the south of France in a very

remote Village and couldn't find a ruler

they didn't have it so we had to go to

the town after my husband was taking

pictures of me going

like that and then we were taking the

measures of you know ahaa okay that was

very funny and of course when she saw it

she's like what are you going to do with

that when when you're done with it I

said I don't know probably end up in

your house somewhere maybe I'm so happy

that I had this

head with Isabelle gone Nothing Else

Matters to Daryl but the

boy you know where I'm from

they say you blow on those to set your

wishes free in French it's called peace

on cuz if you eat one makes you pee in

bed p in the

Lee there found this in the trunk of a

car there's this sweet scene where loron

is playing the guitar the hardest part

of that from a writing point of view and

an emotionally was the idea of Daryl

saying goodbye to l

you're not coming are you somebody has

to stay behind it takes me to like a

place in my head where I'm probably

never going to see him again I'll make

it back it was hard cuz I had to be kind

of sad and like

emotional play something I can play

guitar I've been doing it for maybe 2

years but I mean it was kind of hard to

play cuz it wasn't tuned but I think

they wanted it to not be tuned cuz you

know it's the apocalypse and if you

would pick up a Guitar after 12 years

and just strum it and it would be

perfect pitch when we're shooting it I

was like how are we going to do this how

are we going to do this and everybody's

nervous and he was sort of struggling a

little bit I said you know what I'm

going to sing with you which wasn't in

the script but I'm going to sing the

song when you start singing it I'll

start singing it with you and what it

did was it gave two

crackly voices they sort of connected in

a way which made it even

sadder hiy look at me I'm must see you

again all

right you ready to

fly you got to go right now come on help

me get this wall

[Music]

down the hippo Drome sequence was was

many days I think it was a full week and

multiple units it was probably the

hardest overall sequence we filmed in

the whole series and two one action I

love having all the cast back together

the hippo Drome scenes it's all the

right flavors in the soup good very good

this is one of the most epic sequences

of the Season getting the wrong out of

here so it's a pretty powerful sequence

with a lot of action a lot of ticking

clocks but also some really big

emotional Stakes hi look at me I'll see

you soon all right I

promise I love the hyp Drome because

it's postapocalyptic hasn't been

renovated for a long long time it was

really hard high level of difficulty

with airplanes and shooting and things

blowing up and

Walkers amazingly shot by Dan pel

amazing stunt work by Seb and his guys

keep the plane really juddering we're

shooting close-ups in the airplane which

of course we can't do while the plane is

taking off down the runway so we have to

shoot against a green screen and it's

really complicated we have a whole bunch

of people shaking the plane to make it

vibrate and all the actors have to

imagine what's going on and I'm talking

them through it more vibration more

violent vibration we got to be in a real

plane which was kind of sick look when

you see the finished film it look seemly

like they're heading down the wrun way

and avoiding all sorts of OB in the way

and taking off and

escaping we had to have uh the best

drivers best Riders and the best pilot

we booked batist sist he's a really good

pilot here in France we are in Paris

area and typically we we don't have the

authorization fly over this area but for

the movie we have the authorization to

do that I think the most important thing

here is with all the violence and all

the action and all the thrill and all

the drama that you never lose sight of

that very simple human emotion of two

people saying farewell potentially for

the last time I

know go I was kind of gripped by that

because I'm like wow he started alone

washing up on a beach and now he's

getting left alone again that's what it

feels like in the moment my fondest

memory of shooting that whole crazy

Hippodrome scene would be Carol laying

in the grass taking that shot and then

looking over and seeing Daryl Daryl

seeing Carol Carol stays behind because

she can't leave Daryl behind it's the

whole reason she came we keep going all

right that's what we

[Music]

do so we end the season in the Chunnel

the Chunnel is a tunnel that connects

France to England and the idea that

we're positing in episode six is that

things in England are better ostensibly

and maybe there's another way to get

some kind of boat or plane or something

to get home I

for if you want a coffee it's like a 30

minute walk it's sort of like being in

in deep space or like low depths of the

ocean we wanted

something a little crazy would also

allow us to sort of break out of just

realism we were talking about bats and

there'd be lots of bats there and then

we talked about guano and the effects of

guano I'd written an episode on ER about

kids who had ingested guano that's how

we went bad crazy and the writers were

no I didn't know that bad can drive you

crazy but it's good to know we've been

testing these bioluminescent walkers for

about a month and a half already what we

really wanted to do was get the sense

that the glowing was happening from

inside the idea is this fungus that gets

underneath the skin glows it's really

really challenging to get lights

underneath a prosthetic makeup so we

opted for some black light activated

paints and we would paint the suits and

then put layers of translucent silicone

over top of them to diffuse them so it

looks like they're actually glowing from

underneath we actually painted some of

the dentures with black light paint so

the mouths will glow and it looks

fantastic he sent me a little bit of the

draft work for some of the Carol Walkers

which is a little disturbing to see he

had taken a whole latex back in season 4

when they were going to kill Carol off I

had gone to his studio and they made a

latex of my face and he used that as

preliminary drafts for what we'll be

seeing in the Chunnel but it's just

enough to not to toally mutilate Carol

in her own mind I think it's very

interesting for the characters in a way

we have to go back in our past to

resolve stuff inside us you know she

thought she' come to terms with the

death of Sophia and she had in so many

ways I think it's a punishment that she

may not even deserve

we don't know we don't know what season

3 is I don't know what the significance

of Ash La Escape is in the big picture I

mean it's the end of one story it's the

beginning of another journey and cut

what are the chances that you're going

to see Ash again he is off to the K yeah

I think we will see lar again I hope

so ah my goodness I hope we see him

again with family kids another adventure

they're still in Europe it's just the

two of them now what there are other

cool places not far from France thanks

everybody knowing that there's a new

journey ahead and that now they're

partnered and they're going to fight it

together it's tremendously exciting I
