I really wanna show you guys.

This is it,

this is the car that made me
\hbecome a show car builder.

I saw this picture

hanging on the wall
\hin the main shop,

and I said to myself, "One day

I’m gonna build a car
\hthat’s nice enough

\h\h\hso that I can have
a black and white picture

of my car on my wall,"

and this is the car.

-It’s almost moving me to tears.
-Yeah.

[JF] Never got around
\h\hto building one,

\h\hbecause the show cars
always take over, right?

\h\h\h\h\h\hIt all started with
a 1928 Model A that Ken built.

It’s pretty cool.

[Avery] So you building
\h\hone of these cars,

that what you’re telling us,

\h\hor what?
-I’d like to.

I think it’d be cool, JF,
\hget back to your roots.

[JF] This is probably the most
\h\h\hinspiring place I come to

\h\hwhen I’m thinking
of building hot rods,

and today it’s got me
\hon a total tangent.

Pretty well the simplest
\hhot rod on the planet.

I need to do one of these cars

How good is this car?

Well, at one time, JF,
this car was brand-new.

\h\h\h\h\h\h-[laughter]
-That’s how good it is.

that would be a great project.

I mean, they’ve been

for what...80 years.

The 1928 Model A

was Ford’s successor

to their legendary Model T.

With a more durable body
\h\hand powerful engine,

\h\h\h\h\h\hthe car was
an immediate sensation,

and one million units were
\h\h\h\hsold in the first
\h\h\h\htwo months alone.

By the end of World War II,

millions were still
\h\h\h\hin circulation,

that made the Model A
\h\h\ha popular choice

for hot-rodders.

\h\h\h\h\hI’d be quite excited
to see my old car going again.

Avery recently bought

two military vehicles

called Half-Tracks,

some key components.

[Avery] I was pretty naive

when I bought the first two
\h\h\h\h\h\h\hHalf-Tracks.

I spent $8,000 on one,

and $5,000 on the other one.

It’s a lot of money,

and I got nothing that runs.

You’ll blend right in.

a Canadian-built T33.

Built back in the ’50s.

What is this thing?

That’s a 1944

White cab-over tractor unit.

That thing is really cool.

Looks like a tough bulldog.

This is one of the biggest

collections of military stuff

that I’ve seen.

But there’s more stuff
\h\h\h\h\haround here.

There’s a Half-Track
\h\hunderneath there.

[Jacob] Yeah, I see that.

[Avery] These Half-Tracks,

they were the Swiss Army Knife
\h\h\h\h\h\h\hof the military.

During the Second World War,

the M3 Half-Track

was used by Allied forces

to carry personnel
\h\h\h\h\hand artillery

across challenging terrain.

The Half-Track’s front tires

offered easy steerability
\h\h\h\h\hto new recruits,

while its continuous
\h\h\h\h\hrear track

optimized weight distribution

on soft and uneven ground.

This winning combination
allowed Allied soldiers

\h\hto travel as safely as
possible through dangerous
\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\hsettings,

on their long road to victory.

I have wanted a Ford roadster

ever since I realized

that that was the spirit

are crazy on this car.

We are actually pulling off
\h\hsome super cool tricks

that I’ve never seen
\h\h\h\hdone before.

\hIt’s just gonna be
a whole bunch of fun.

how well the engine runs.

we are going to pull this off.

He thinks I’m building

to his mentor.

[JF] Well, there’s a band
\h\h\h\h\h\h\hof misfits.

[Ken] Wow!

Where’s the rat rod, JF?

Yeah, JF, where’s the rat rod?

[JF] I swear to God, it’s hiding
under a couple layers of paint,

that’s all.

just a little shinier.

[Ken] Holy, holy, holy.

Stunning, my friend.

[Avery] Look at that thing.

[Mike] I know.

It just gleams.

\h\h\h\h\hI mean, we walk in
expecting some ratty old rod

\hthat’s going to have
a hot rod motor in it.

There’s no rat involved
\h\h\h\h\h\h\hanywhere.

The thing is unbelievable.

\h[JF] The essence of it
started from this engine

that I got from Ken.

[Mike] Tell me the tale
on those valve covers,

’cause those are not stock.

It’s just kind of a play
\h\h\h\h\h\h\hon the idea

that this should be an engine

\hthat came out of
a Canadian Pontiac

rather than a Chevrolet,

and I thought it was just
\ha little more romantic

\h\hthan just having an orange
Chevrolet 409 sitting in here.

It looks pretty cool.

Those pre-head valve covers,
\h\hI have never seen a set.

He built them and stamped them.

I mean, that thing is going
\h\h\hto drive people nuts.

Those spark plugs...

They’re polished.

[Avery] You polished
\h\hthe spark plugs?

I did polish the spark plugs.

\h\h\h[JF] We went from
a quickie rat rod build

to something that I think
\h\h\h\h\h\h\his amazing.

My son’s actually put in
\h\h\h\halmost 500 hours

into detailing the engine,

and that is no easy feat.

Detail, everywhere you look,
\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\hit’s details.

[Ken] It’s incredible

\h\h\h\h\h\hthe amount
of difference it makes,

\h\hthe hours and hours into
the detailing of that engine.

I don’t think you’ll see
\h\hanother one like it.

\h\h\hPretty good use of
your old parts, isn’t it?

\h\h\hYou could’ve left
one rusty one on there.

\h[Mike] When I look at this car,
and I think of what we looked at

in Ken’s barn,

it’s almost beyond comprehension

that it’s the same car.

It’s really a simple car,

but you can’t swipe
\h\h\ha credit card

to build a car like this.
\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\h-No.

[Mike] They’ve taken
\h\hordinary objects

\hand turned them into
an extraordinary build.

Now, one of the coolest things,

it’s still a rumbleseat car.

I don’t think I’d ever fit
\h\h\h\hin that rumbleseat.

[Mike] Wow, look at that.

[JF] Check that out.

[Mike] What gave you the idea
with the tan and the orange?

\h[JF] Most people would put
a brown interior in this car,

\h\h\h\h\hbut that’s
the safe thing to do.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

That’s the last thing
\h\h\hwe want to do.

It makes it stand out,

\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\hit gives it
its own unique personality,

and I think it just looks
\h\h\h\h\h\h\h\hkick-ass.

\h\h\h[Ken] The idea
of an olive drab body

with orange upholstery,

it’s creative and bold,

and yet it looks so right.

Well, Ken, what do you think

of going for a ride

I think that’d be a great idea.

of riding shotgun with Ken

in his roadsters,

There’s at least 400 ponies

The car is super light,
