And he just sort of threw us together.
And it just sort of worked.

And I didn't know what that meant
until I ended up in those masks.

What I remember is it being
about a 10-week shoot. Wasn't it?

Yes.

From February to March,
and then released in August. Pretty fast.

- Did it come out that fast?
-Yeah. All in the same year, '81.

Yeah, I remember having to... You worked
all the time, and I worked in spurts.

But stayed in London, you know,
the entire time.

And I had a lot of time on my hands,

so I ended up going to see
a lot of these guys in plays at night.

Oh, you did? I know that...

Yeah, I think I first met
with Rick Baker here in October.

And then we went over to London in
late January, started shooting in February,

and went through the process,
all the makeup and so on,

and finished the film, you know,
toward the middle, end of March.

And they rushed it, you know, the post,
and it was released, I remember,

it was, like, the first week of August
in the same year. Pretty quick.

- Did you take the Concorde over?
-Yes, I did.

So did I. it was, like,
one of the first Concorde flights.

- It was.
-I was very impressed.

- Now this actor...
- You...

- No, you.
-...made me miss.

Played the Elephant Man,
and he was talking about makeup.

That's right. That's right.

Jack, we'd better go.

You know what... What I remember?

It's nothing we talked about at the time,
but the style of the way we're acting,

very natural and able to be very funny.

Especially at the beginning of this movie,
you know.

We look like such nice kids,
such good friends,

and now we're gonna be hacked to pieces
in about five minutes.

It was the very beginning of movies
that were funny and scary at the same time.

And I remember when it came out,
this was always a major complaint of critics,

that the movie couldn't decide what it was.

And then later, of course,
it became kind of standard in horror.

You know, you never see a horror movie
anymore that isn't also very funny.

But this was...

But, boy, they could play darts.

This was almost a... it really hit
below the belt in terms of horror movies

to actually have the introduction of
these characters that seem like normal kids

and then just brutally kill them
in a horror movie.

I think it was...

It was very hostile of Mr. Landis.

- What do you think was wrong?
- I have no idea.

who owned the property we're on now?

- The Queen, was it not?
-The Queen of England.

Out at Windsor Castle.
The back lot of Windsor Castle.

That particular night we got killed

was sort of, for me,
the more physically grueling.

Of course we didn't hear anything,
as I recall.

This part really freaks people out, I think.
Just because... You know, it's very real.

It's like trying to find a macabre sense
of humor when you're actually scared.

And also not giving away the creature.
Not seeing it yet.

to horror films, don't show it.

It's circling us.

and then they'd sort of shake it.

It was really very primitive.

And this is after we'd been cast.

I was on my way
to get on the plane in a day or so.

to move the whole production to Paris.

Well, yeah.
I knew they'd scouted locations in France.

Yeah. They said it'll be called American
Werewolf in Paris, if that's the case.

You knew that, too?

Well, I knew there was a problem
with British Equity.

They were only looking for four or five
permits. Rick, you, me and John. Four.

- Frank Oz.
-Frank Oz, yeah.

and I had seen her,

and I had this crush on this actress that
I'd seen at the National Theater in Equus.

And, in fact, they had seats
on stage at the time,

so it was sort of the form of a jury,
and we, as students...

This is when I was going to school
in London.

I saw this production more than once,

because I thought
this was just a phenomenal production

and this actress who was in it was great.

And I only realized later

that this was the person
who I had this infatuation with, Jenny.

And I told her,
and it had no effect whatsoever.

She probably hears that a lot.

- No problem.
- No, thank you, Doctor.

Well, then, what can I do for Scotland Yard?

Now that's... He's a British playwright.

Has Mr. Kessler said anything
regarding the attack on the moors?

I didn't like my work in this scene.

Well, you know, it must've been...

It must've been perplexing
to people, audiences.

I don't remember being privy
to how the test screenings or anything were,

but here you had this brutal murder
and all this stuff, by a wolf.

Then you have, like, slapstick. You know,
dropping... Just a few minutes later.

Yeah, just a little bit of relief from the gore.

But it comes back and gets gory, doesn't it?

We have an autopsy report on the murderer,
who was shot in the act by the local police.

We have two witnesses to the crime.

You'll forgive me, Mr. Kessler,
if I consider your testimony

as coming from someone
who has gone through a terrible shock.

Inspector, the boy seems all right
to me, and...

And what, Sergeant?

- And I don't rightly know, sir.
- That is precisely my point.

Nobody's very nice to you in this.

English people.

- There were witnesses?
- So they said.

How could there have been witnesses?
It was so dark.

We were running, and I fell,

and Jack went to help me up,
and this thing came from nowhere.

I don't know what they're talking about.

In time, I'm sure it'll all come back to you.

Doctor, my memory is fine.

It's my sanity I'm beginning to worry about.

Ah, yes.

- You're completely naked, aren't you?
-I think I am.

And I don't have to tell you, it's pretty
darn chilly there, in England, in February.

-No, this is out in the... You know.

-Yeah, some woods nearby.

Now a lot of people would become
vegetarian after a scene like that.

I get a lot of questions about Jenny.

Yeah, me, too.

I mean, she's just so stunning.

kind of watching the film, you know?

What a lot of lovely comics you've got.

That little boy went on to be Daniel
Day-Lewis in My Beautiful Laundrette.

- It's incredible. Even then...
-He was quite good.

Now, this guy I know
John Landis found extremely entertaining.

Not that you can understand him.

- What happens to them, I don't know.

it was pretty close to being in sequence.

- How did I do that?
- You're to take these after you've eaten.

This went on forever for me,
because I had nothing to do.

So I would just come and visit.

My big memory of...
I remember not being in these scenes.

I just remember not rehearsing a lot,
so that...

That was one of John's favorite things.
You remember?

To just let it happen
and see what he could capture on film.

Although he gave us notes individually.

He would say one thing to some actors
in terms of trying it,

so I was always aware
that something new would be happening,

and I didn't know what.

I have ripped off that trick,
directing later on,

where I'd have them...
You know, say one thing to one actor

and then tell a completely different thing
to another one.

- Let's try a little harder, shall we?
- Would you give me a break?

- She's all business.
-Did she give you an enema?

No, she's just trying to get me
interested in English food,

and we know, having been there
for at least 10 weeks,

in the '80s
it was very hard to get a good meal.

By the way, you know, we were in...
We couldn't have been...

- Already the sparks are flying.

This is some of the hardest makeup.

People think the transformation
is the hard bit.

That right there was as painful as any part.

I was wearing these full scleral lenses,
complete glass lenses on my eyes

that were hard to get in and hard
to come out. They don't use glass for eyes...

- Also, I would think, very dangerous.
-It is. But who knew back then?

We were doing some original,
cutting-edge makeup at the time.

I saw him. A man can't do that
to someone with his bare hands.

You'd be surprised
what horrors a man is capable of.

Yeah, I guess we were lucky not to be

victimized by the cutting-edge technology.

Did you talk to the police in East Proctor?
Did the cops go to The Slaughtered Lamb?

I really don't know.

Then why the hell are you so quick
to disbelieve me?

- You think I'm crazy.
- David, please. The police are satisfied,

and I'm certain if there were a monster
roaming around Northern England,

we'd have seen it on the telly.

three or four days.

Because I was having
some pretty wild nightmares.

Particularly this scene,
I think, got a lot of reaction.

I remember seeing this in Times Square
at the screening that they had there,

and this scene had them
literally leaping out of their seats.

That's Landis's favorite book.

He's been wanting to make it into a movie
for years.

He thought that would be his next movie.

And what was interesting was the stuntman
holding that real knife to my neck

couldn't see out of the mask.

- So that kind of concerned me.

That was a pretty nice flat
for a nurse in London. You know?

that we used in Knightsbridge, I believe.

Then there was a mockup of it
when it came time for the transformation.

I worked on a stage at that point.

but it was either scalding or freezing, and...

And, like anybody... You know
what they say, love scenes are no fun.

They're certainly no fun to do.

I wouldn't know. I was in that makeup.
Nobody having no love scenes with me.

No, it's... You get the crew

and other people who just seem to have
come onto the film standing in the room.

Most of whom were Jenny Agutter fans,
so I didn't really mind.

- How long did it take to shoot this?
-Days.

No, it was just, you know, an afternoon.
Just another afternoon on a Tuesday.

I still think it would've been interesting
if you'd cut and Jack was down there

in his makeup.

I say "Look, I'd like to stay, honey, but
I gotta go see my buddy in the bathroom."

- Yeah, there's a great cut coming up.
-Yeah, it's terrific.

And this has been used, too,
in some films subsequently.

The old "close the mirror"...

Yeah, I think I just saw it in
What Lies Beneath.

Good scare.

Phase two makeup.

Yeah, you're looking
kind of green and decayed here.

A nurse, huh?

What about the jacket? Did you keep...

Well, it's funny. I didn't keep the torn jacket,

but the one that survived I wore for years
afterwards as a regular jacket.

Did you? I had the backpack,
and I think I still may have it.

- This is pretty creepy.
-Yeah. Takes a different tone here.

What are you doing here?

- Hi, David.
- Put that down.

John... That wasn't in the script, but John
said, "Pick that up and say 'Hi, David.".

I know. And we just would do anything
he asked. "Why?" "Don't ask why."

Rick to do a makeup.

He said, "I didn't bring any makeup."
They said, "Well, we'll find stuff for you.

"And could you do a makeup
for David for our show?"

And Rick made up half my face in a tear,
like I'd lost my, you know, just pulled...

And the other half just left it naturally.

And out I went in profile on a live audience

with cameras going
to Switzerland and Germany.

And he interviewed me in profile. And
the point was, at the end he was gonna say,

"Did you have any side effects
to the experience of being in this film?"

I said, "Yeah, I got this toothache."
And I turned, and the audience flipped out.

They just absolutely freaked out,
'cause it was a tear-off thing.

I was always reluctant to be taken out
when I was in my "dead" makeup.

Remember? They kept saying,
"Let's go to a pub and freak people out."

Well, I have a picture. I have a photograph,

which I'm sure
these people would be interested in,

of you and I walking in Piccadilly Circus.

But people were, I remember,
clearing a nice big path for us to walk.

this was the funniest thing.

The very first time this makeup
was put on me, in the test in Rick's studio,

I became incredibly depressed
looking at myself.

It was the phase one, where the...

After he'd painted the veins bright red,
so it was all fresh blood and everything,

it looked like I'd been killed just a few
minutes earlier, only I was talking.

And it was... It was really unsettling.

It was like imagining
what I would look like if I was dead.

And at that very moment John Landis calls

and goes, "How ya feeling?
Ya getting depressed?"

I went, "How did you know?

He goes

You still wanna do the movie?"

-Yeah, we did it in California.

I never got to really wear any makeup.
All I was in was the fast-drying alginate.

Didn't they have to put all those hairs
individually into your body?

They put 'em on me,
but they waited till London for that.

Oh, when we got to London.

All I really was doing was mold after mold.
Head molds. That was no fun.

My parents were with me
at the opening in New York,

and I was trying to prepare them
for what they were about to see.

I'd seen a screening of the film
by myself here, the finished version,

which is a little unsettling,
seeing the film by yourself.

But I knew what I was In for,
I knew what they were gonna be in for,

and I was trying to prepare them for it.

And, of course, my parents were
in complete shock after the film

and were asked by the press what
they thought, and they couldn't even speak.

They were horrified.
And, you know, I was trying to keep it light

going, "Well, it's gonna be scaly,
and there are gonna be some victims."

But what we were taken by was
how the actual paying audience reacted.

And they flipped out. Literally jumped
out of their seats a couple of times.

Particularly...
Up to this point, at least, they'd jumped,

and in the transformation
they were quite freaked out.

Yeah, my... My mother was deeply disturbed
by the movie.

I think she... I think she hated seeing
one of her kids dead.

First of all getting killed and then
having him keep coming back, you know,

in various stages of decomposition.

And it was... You know, I was the...

It was really the first movie I was in,
so I had a...

It was a very exciting time, 'cause it was...

It was a leading part in a movie,
so all my friends would go.

I didn't even know any other people
who were in movies,

outside of, you know, much smaller parts.

very disappointed in the reviews.

I thought that this would be something

It wasn't your average horror movie.

And the critics, you know,
the so-called serious critics,

the New York Times in particular,

They just had a lukewarm reaction to it.

It confused them.

It really... You know,
all the fan reaction and everything

didn't really catch-up and kick in

and make a noticeable difference
in my life until the video.

I know that people seeing a John Landis
film, they assumed it was a comedy.

You know, coming from Animal House
and The Blues Brothers. But...

and they held that cat up to the other cat,

Once he said, "You have the part,"
he never mentioned the script

as much as he kept saying,

And then having that thing dry
around your face with those two tubes,

it did occur to me that
if Rick was a psychotic,

all he had to do was take out
those little straws and watch you suffocate.

Yeah. It just required,
you know, total trust of Rick...

- Complete surrender.

who tried to reassure me by saying,
"Well, we've tried it, and it's fine."

But, you know, this was such an early
stage of... Nobody else was doing this.

There was no actor I could call and say,
"Hey, how was that experience?"

Landis and I had a chat about this, saying,
"What's this transformation?"

"Is it gonna feel good? Is it euphoric?
Is it gonna be a pleasant experience?"

"Or maybe it's gonna hurt, because
it's gonna be bone-stretching and..."

"I think maybe it's more painful
than some blissful experience."

"Maybe it's something that you really
don't wanna have to experience again."

So the idea here was to make light of it

so that there was someplace to go
when it came time to actually happening.

It's like waiting
for the hallucinogenics to kick in.

enough. I couldn't get out of the floor.

So they'd take five and they'd all leave,
shut off the lights,

and I'd just hang in there in the floor going,
"This will be over one day."

Then they'd come back
and show no sympathy,

going, "If you were in The Elephant Man...
He had to wear the makeup every day."

I said, "Yeah, okay, thanks."

This was the first movie, I understand,

that had permission
to actually close down Piccadilly Circus.

But we only had a certain period of time,
so we had to rebuild it at Twickenham.

Right. I don't believe that they had
permission to do a car accident, though.

They just sort of grabbed it, you know,
at 5:30, 6:00 in the morning, when...

Everything just goes wild here.

But what was amazing was they cleaned up
the accident in no time at all.

And it was as if it had never happened.

Oh, here he is.

For Christ's sake, John,
there's a monster in there!

Here's where it gets fun.

And where John makes his cameo, as well.

And, yeah, this is intercut
between Twickenham and Piccadilly.

I like how John just stuck
with the idea of it being a wolf,

you know, instead of a man,
the Lon Chaney kind of thing.

Two-legged creature, a wolf man.

Which was our whole point
of trying to take John aside

and going, "Look, there are no
silver bullets. We can do a couple of these."

- He had a problem with that.
