I'm looking at the photograph of a young man,

snow is falling, and he's wearing a sweater.

He's tall and has strong shoulders.

His hair is floating in a breeze.

He's looking at me.

There's an intimate smile on his face.

The photograph is in black and white.

I'm looking at the photograph and at the young man,

and he suddenly begins to move

and become larger than the picture.

His body pushes off of the paper,

out of the image and into my room.

His legs and torso and face expand.

Color starts pouring into his skin, and hair, and eyes.

He becomes real.

Standing in my room in front of me.

I look at him and see someone very familiar

but also completely new.

I move closer to him.

I can't believe he's with me.

I reach out my hand to touch his face.

I can see him breathing, his chest rising and falling.

I'm afraid that when I touch his skin, he'll disappear.

But I can't stop myself.

I reach out and touch him.

His skin is warm

and he smiles at me even more.

We begin to make love.

In my room it's a summer evening and the windows are open.

I feel totally alive.

He kisses me again and again.

The taste, the feeling of sweat rolling down my back.

Our breathing, panting.

The sense of urgency and need.

We pull our clothes off and downward.

Biting and laughing and playing and resisting.

We try to slow ourselves down

but all the while we are getting closer and closer.

His lips brush across one of my nipples.

I pull him closer.

The smell of his skin, the soft hum of his voice as he says my name.

I feel the strength of him all around me.

I feel sex rushing through us,

surrounding us, overwhelming us.

And then I'm looking at the photograph of a young man.

I appreciate your help.

I haven't seen many cars going by.

- Sure. - And people don't stop.

Yeah I know.

And I don't know about you

Are you on vacation?

I'm meeting some friends. It's their anniversary.

That's good of you to stop. I mean, I'm sure you're in a hurry.

You're on vacation?

That's what I was hoping but I didn't expect this kind of start.

- You never know. - I guess not.

Are you meeting friends?

No, I just needed to get away.

From what?

You know, the usual.

You're from the city?

That's right. You?

Yeah.

This drive always seems long and the radio usually doesn't work.

Can't get any stations or any music, just talk shows.

What's wrong with talk shows?

Oh, nothing.

- But you don't like them? - Not really.

- Why not? - I don't know, the people.

What about them?

They seem desperate.

Maybe they are.

Then how can someone on the radio help them?

It's as good as anything.

Maybe.

Wait, you never reach a point where you're lonely

and you need some help, need someone to talk to?

Sure I do but I wouldn't talk to somebody I don't know.

Lots of times it's better to talk to someone you don't know.

You can be more open with someone you don't know.

I'd rather talk to somebody I know.

So you're too good to call into a talk show?

No! No, look, I'm sure those people are fine.

"Those people"?

What does that mean?

Nothing.

I don't have to be afraid?

Yes you should. You should be very afraid.

I was camping alone on an isolated beach.

I got there just as it was getting dark.

By the time I'd setup the tent, it was night,

fog was drifting in off the ocean,

I lay in the darkness listening to the waves.

I started to feel restless

and so I got a flashlight and I went outside.

and then the fog cleared for a few moments

And I could see a light approaching from several hundred feet away.

I thought about turning around.

I didn't want to see anyone but, I decided to keep going.

I looked toward the light but it suddenly disappeared.

Aside from my footsteps in the gravel,

my own breathing, the sound of my clothes as I moved,

there was complete silence.

You couldn't even hear the waves

and then the light appeared in front of me again about 50 feet away.

I could see someone moving toward me from behind the light.

It was a woman walking two large dogs.

Just then a dense sheet of fog blew over me and it started to rain.

I looked forward and I could see the woman and the dogs.

The dogs were grey and had large heads.

Suddenly they started running

and they got away from her. They ran towards me.

I thought they were going to attack

but they ran by me and into the darkness.

She ran after them and as she passed, she briefly looked at me.

I could barely see her face.

It was almost like it wasn't there.

The rain started falling more heavily.

I walked back toward the beach but I didn't see the woman anywhere.

I went toward the tent.

The fog was still dense, the flashlight seemed almost useless.

I walked for several minutes in what I knew to be the right direction

but I couldn't find the tent.

The rain was getting heavier. My clothes were getting soaked.

I searched up and down the dunes for the tent

but I still couldn't find it.

I started to feel lost, disoriented.

It seemed like I walked much too far,

so I turned around and started to go back

and then I saw the tent just in front of me.

I got inside, took my clothes off.

Despite the rain and fog, the air was warm.

I stood inside the tent naked thinking of the woman

and then I heard someone entering the tent.

I was startled and I didn't move.

I realized it was the woman.

She immediately kissed me and we started making love.

The rain fell heavily outside

and within the tent there was almost total darkness.

I could only sometimes see the outline of her body.

As we touched one another I began to feel suspended with her

in some unknown place,

a place that had slipped outside the holds of personality and time.

The woman became more and more unpredictable, primitive.

We took each other again and again

and both refused to rest or stop

in turn leading and following, moving apart and coming together.

The connection between was an invisible force

that we threw back and forth,

it disappeared from one point in our bodies

and reappeared somewhere else again and again,

somehow weightless and burning.

I woke up the next morning and she was gone.

After that, always I had the feeling, have the feeling,

that she's somehow watching me, following me.

In almost every woman, I see her.

Do you see her in me?

Maybe.

- You should. - Why is that?

Do you want to see more?

Take that off.

I want to tell you a story about a woman on a beach.

There was a woman who used to live near the ocean.

She had a small house and lived alone.

Sometimes she would get very, very lonely,

sometimes scared.

She decided to buy two dogs to protect her, a male and a female.

The dogs had short grey hair and were both extremely muscular.

They seemed wild, almost like wolves.

They had powerful teeth and fangs.

They scared almost everyone that saw them, except for the woman.

They were loyal to her, almost jealous.

She would take them for a walk every evening on the beach.

One night in the summer it was very foggy

but she decided to take them for a walk anyway.

She walked down toward the ocean, carrying a flashlight

but could barely see anything

and the dogs seemed very strange, restless.

Then the woman saw a light moving toward her from the beach

and the dogs grew even more restless.

They tried to run toward the light but she held them back.

Then the woman noticed something amazing.

The bodies of the dogs began to change, they grew larger,

their heads grew larger,

they began to look almost like human heads.

The other light drew nearer but the woman couldn't see what it was.

Suddenly the dogs broke free from her and starting running toward the light.

When they reached it, they disappeared.

The woman ran after them.

When the woman reached the light she saw a man walking toward her

carrying a flashlight.

He was very beautiful.

She looked at him but ran after the dogs.

The fog on the beach was dense.

She couldn't see the dogs anywhere.

She called out and searched along the ocean

but they didn't come.

In the sand, she found footprints and followed them.

But as she did, the shape of the footprints changed.

They became larger, they became human.

She followed them through the sand until she came to a tent

and that's where the footprints stopped.

The woman felt very frightened

but also excited, very excited.

She felt different somehow, like she was changing.

Slowly, quietly, she went into the tent.

Inside there was a man standing in the dark.

He was naked.

They began to kiss and touch each other.

As they did, the woman realized that they were both changing.

She wasn't just a woman.

She was a woman but also a dog and a wolf.

He was a man but also a dog and a wolf.

They were becoming the animals.

Every fear, and restraint, and inhibition, and judgment was gone.

They didn't think. They took each other instinctively.

They bit and scratched and fought.

They smelled the scent of each other, tasted the saliva, the sweat,

the blood, the moisture.

They played and fought for dominance.

She didn't know where she ended and he began.

She felt his fangs biting her neck.

She felt his powerful animal muscles moving above her.

She scratched him with her claws, she howled into the darkness.

There was an instant, unspeakable love between them,

like they were the only two of their kind in the world.

Afterwards lying in the dark, they became human again.

He held her very close for a long time.

Their bodies shifted back to the way they were before.

The woman's fangs and claws disappeared.

Her mind began to understand thoughts, and words, and time.

She could hear the ocean, the dogs barking somewhere near by.

She felt tenderness, understanding for the man lying beside her.

He was sleeping now.

Before she left him, she put her head on his chest and felt his heart

and everything in the world seemed fragile and fleeting,

like a breath, surrendered into the sky.
